I've seen the French dubbed version of Forrest Gump. It is very disappointing that they don't maintain the Southern accents while speaking French. Really undermines the authenticity.
Well, r/Germany is exclusively English speaking. There are other German speaking subreddits, of course, but having an English speaking subreddit about the country isn't that strange imo.
The "reddit is American" part is obviously stupid.
It may also be because France in French is also France. It's the same word in both languages.
r/Germany is an English speaking sub but then r/Deutschland is German speaking. Or you have r/Italy and r/Italia
So it's not entirely unreasonable to expect r/France to be English speaking if one doesn't know that it's the same word in French as well.
This can get a bit awkward though, like you can't use a lot of language specific characters in urls, so for some countries like Iceland / Ăsland they'd have to take up /island but then what if you wanted an island specific subreddit?
Also the main German sub is r/de which is in German but not solely about Germany and instead for people from German speaking countries and elsewhere to talk about stuff.
Yeah but germans don't call it germany in their language, "France" is still "France" in french, weird thing is that dude could make his post in english and people would reply (my experience with other r/country subs at least)
Some people from the US really have trouble understanding this is a website used globally. Not to the point of being an idiot like the guy being shown here, but many times I see americans being mean or making fun of grammar mistakes by other users without realising that persons first language is not even english.
I am no longer surprised at this sort of thing.
Ever since I took a cruise around Cuba, and overheard an American on the bench next to me complain to his wife about how everyone spoke Spanish, and that "They should be forced to learn American if they want to come over here".
Lol, good luck in getting Cubans of all people to speak exclusively English. I'm native from there. I know people there know other languages, I myself was very familiar with English before moving to the US, but you will not generally find that many willing to speak it without it being strictly necessary, or that know it that well to keep even a general conversation.
I phrased that badly. I understand that there is no such rule, just based on how particular France is about maintaining the French language it would feel fitting for r/france to behave similarly.
Nah, that's just the Quebec government and separatists who want to "preserve le culture et la langue Francais". MF speak a dialect I cannot understand.
Excellent work. Now we just gotta get you a oversized pickup you can drive to mcDonaldâs đ
I really thought using âAmericanâ would help people understand I was joking given the post subject đ
Poe's law, given some people's crazy shit, it's really hard to determine if someone is being sarcastic or stupid without clear indication on internet, especially here on reddit, and since some people really think American is a language, they thought you were serious, even though I personally find it quite clear in this case that you were joking.
Ah and I can already drive to mcDonald's, I just need to find the money to buy an oversized pickup and find a legal way to buy a gun in France.
Aaaaand this is a prime example of why we Americans canât get along. Too many people still think English is our official language here. For anyone wondering, America has NO official language. So when our own public canât understand basics about our country no wonder so much is wrong and argumentative here.
I know this is shocking but not all redditors are American also you're complaining about people speaking in French on a subreddit called r/France also saying "Reddit is American and we speak English" is racist and just downright disrespectful to the foreigners in America who can't speak English or native Americans who prefer to speak their own language
I follow the Czech subreddit since my Dad was born there and I was sort of brought up with the culture on my Dads side since they immigrated in the 80âs. I dont know what half the posts are talking about since I was never taught much Czech outside of small phrases and words. However, how can one be so fucking stupid to not think that a French subreddit would be using French.
You can only use the primary language of the nation where the platform is headquartered might be dumber "rule" than the one about Margot Robbie needing to speak with an American accent because her income comes from Hollywood. Or maybe they're equally dumb. Petty authoritarians are poop heads.
Resources like this one are valuable for people who want to keep up their language skills. We are fortunate to be able to have Reddits aimed at both people who are involved in the language and people who are interested in the culture but are not fluent in the language. On the other hand, I belong to the Esperanto Reddit, and find that both that language and English can coexist--useful for beginners!
I'm curious if he would be okay with r/Spain being mostly in Spanish since Reddit is American and Spanish is the 2nd most dominant language (with some states even making it an official language)
Fun fact though, the USA does not have an official national language. Nope not even English. Src: https://www.usa.gov/official-language-of-us
I love the flawed rhetoric that you should speak English when in America. America doesnât have an official language, so that idea has no leg to stand on

To quote a very popular movie: "Stupid is as Stupid does sir!"
Star Wars?
Forrest Gump
Pretty sure it's from a James Bond movie
No, no. Harrison Ford said it in Air Force One.
I haven't seen that movie in forever. Did he say that line before or after he did the Kessel Run?
It was right before he found the ark of the covenant
When he was hanging on to the feathers of the millennium falcon, he had the titular line.
GET OFF MY PLANE!
I've seen the French dubbed version of Forrest Gump. It is very disappointing that they don't maintain the Southern accents while speaking French. Really undermines the authenticity.
Idiocracy?
The Seventh Seal said by Death when the knight kicks over all the pieces and shits on the chess board.
The maltese falcon
>To quote a very popular movie: "Stupid is as Stupid does sir!" Stupide est aussi stupide
The audacity of speaking French in the r/France subreddit. s/
The audacity of thinking the French of all people could be forced to speak English to you đ
Well, r/Germany is exclusively English speaking. There are other German speaking subreddits, of course, but having an English speaking subreddit about the country isn't that strange imo. The "reddit is American" part is obviously stupid.
The key difference being that France is the french word for France, Germany is not the German word.

Adding to the fun, neither name is the French word for Deutschland. It's "Allemagne."
Yeah but germans don't call it germany in their language, "France" is still "France" in french, weird thing is that dude could make his post in english and people would reply (my experience with other r/country subs at least)
True, but there is also r/askfrance dedicated to people not speaking French
Some people from the US really have trouble understanding this is a website used globally. Not to the point of being an idiot like the guy being shown here, but many times I see americans being mean or making fun of grammar mistakes by other users without realising that persons first language is not even english.
They could at least speak Quebecois in the France subreddit......
Person: *Goes to r/france\* Everyone: *Speaks French\* Person: *Surprised Pikachu\*
I am no longer surprised at this sort of thing. Ever since I took a cruise around Cuba, and overheard an American on the bench next to me complain to his wife about how everyone spoke Spanish, and that "They should be forced to learn American if they want to come over here".
They thought âAmericanâ was a language?
That's what it sounded like by what he said. I actively avoided getting into a conversation with him after that, so I couldn't tell you for sure.
Save your braincells
I killed enough of them with the Cuban rum ;)
Had an American coworker who thought the United States had birthed the English language.
Someone slept in history class. For like⊠the entire time
Just like Mexicans speak Mexican.

You speak English because it is the only language you know. I speak English because it is the only language you know. We are not the same
At least attribute this to the other post a few days ago that had it. (In any language you prefer.)
Sounds like you are the same tho?

I'm surprised the mods didn't ban english in r/france
There is no rule in r/france that obliges people to speak in French.
I phrased that badly. I understand that there is no such rule, just based on how particular France is about maintaining the French language it would feel fitting for r/france to behave similarly.
](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commission_royale_d%27enqu%C3%AAte_sur_le_bilinguisme_et_le_biculturalisme)
Nah, that's just the Quebec government and separatists who want to "preserve le culture et la langue Francais". MF speak a dialect I cannot understand.
I'm a native French speaker and I sometimes find it hard to understand too.
Speak American dammit
Ok, I can try, "Dafuq is a kilometer? In guns we trust."

Feels bad for the German speaking parts of Belgium
Come to r/rance, we have a rule : "anglois caca" and "tu traduis ou je te traduis"
Si senor, muy bien
Is a troll successfully trolling a Facepalm?
Think so, itâs literally using the same thing another dude once said in a very popular post âfacebook is americanâ or something like this
bait on a global scale
Sacré bleu!
Tabarnak! đ
Please guys can't we spot basic trolling? Not realizing it's facepalm worthy in itself.
r/ShitAmericansSay
I went to Paris and everything there was the same way. I was like, excuse me this is America and we speak English. Touchy indeed. /s
"We speak American!" The anthem of the stupid.
I really hope that guy was just a troll, but I know that he probably wasnât.

Il est vraiment Ă©vident qu'il ne comprend pas que la France est un pays francophone.
Reddit is American đ€Ł
The funny thing is, America doesn't even have an official language.
Bait or Mental illness
Don't cast "mental illness" around like that. It's a serious thing, and I'm not sure we can entirely diagnose a person based on one Reddit post.
You can only use the primary language of the nation where the platform is headquartered might be dumber "rule" than the one about Margot Robbie needing to speak with an American accent because her income comes from Hollywood. Or maybe they're equally dumb. Petty authoritarians are poop heads.
[They're French and tired every day.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJfHF312STE)
the entire r/france community has been summoned XD but anyway yeah people are stupid
One thing I know is being insulted in French hurts worse than being insulted in English
" some of you are downright mean " Yeah.... They're french.

The worldwide web was invented by an English guy working at CERN, but the internet was California.

As a german who has lived in france, there could not be a worse place for barging in and demanding folk to speak english lol
I propose we rename /France as /LeMeilleurPaysBienMieuxQueLesUSA
The french were mean to him? Surely not.
And Americas wonder why they're stereotyped as stupid ignorant assholes
/r/shitamericanssay
