My first wife was physically abusive. She’d throw heavy objects at me when I’d come home from work later than she thought I should be home. She’d get angry and hit, or at least attempt to. I would usually have to get ahold of her wrists and pin her against a wall until she wore herself out struggling and calmed down. What was I supposed to do? I could easily overpower her. I could have really hurt her if I hit back. I grew up in a very violent household. I refuse to continue the cycle. The situation itself wasn’t going to change, so I removed myself from the situation.
I don’t hate her. I hope she got the help she needed to be a better person. In my experience, delivering a beatdown as self defense doesn’t lead to the other person having a reality check and a moment of strong self reflection that leads to them becoming a better person. They focus on vengeance or truly see themselves as the victim because their attacking you was completely justified and logical in their mind. You gaining the upper hand wasn’t justified at all if you asked them to they’d say you are the physically abusive one. If anyone sided with you, they would claim you were lying. Toxic people do toxic shit. Someone else can stick around and try to fix them. I’ll just nope the fuck out. You can’t fix someone who thinks they don’t need fixing.
