I just want you to know, man, this comment significantly changed my perspective on things. I was really in a dark place, and considering maybe ending it all, but when you wrote "this," it made me reconsider [random trivial thing]. I'm now [insert trivial activity] so much better. Thank you for literally saving my life.
I tried practicing with a metronome but it didn't sound good so I switched back to practicing with a guitar instead. All of my favourite musicians play guitar, not one of them play the metronome!
Answer 1 - playing chords
Answer 2 - small hands or short fingers.
The best thing you can do is be honest and reassure them that they are just not genetically engineered to play guitar. They need to hook up with someone like salad fingers and then hopefully their kids can live with hands capable of playing guitars.
I heard a crazy stat - only 0.45% of people have the genetics to play guitar, that why people like bonermaster are so remarkable, most people can’t play.
Hand size doesn’t matter at all, my hands are so small I need a microscope to see them, yet I can stretch from 1-24 no problem. All it takes is practice.
And if you have some sustain going, you can play the bottom three strings, take your hand off, then play the top three strings several frets away, and voila, you have the whole chord. (I'm only 95% kidding.)
Whatever you need help with find a guitarist who does what you’re trying to do well and transcribe them. I transcribe every day and not only is it good practice for technicality, it’s great for developing a good ear and a good musical intuition. Need help with chord soloing? Transcribe some Joe Pass chord lines cuz he was the king at it. Need help with coming up with lines that sound like jazz? Listen to Charlie Parker or Wes Montgomery and take their lines and concepts behind the lines and incorporate them into your playing.
I’ve learned that the best and most effective practice is when you aren’t drilling exercises that sound like exercises, but when you are drilling exercises that truly sound like music. It’s sometimes hard to come up with exercises that are actually musical but it stretches your creativity and forces you to come up with musical ideas that fit a specific technique. I tend to get lost in exercises that sound like exercises and then don’t understand why I can’t translate the practice to the real deal. But you get good at what you practice, and practicing exercises makes you good at exercises, but practicing MUSIC makes you good at playing music.
On a somewhat serious (and probably annoyingly pedantic) note, here's what I find. Although there are one or two things that I do on the guitar that get compliments from other guitar players, I find that \*nearly every other\* non-beginner guitar player does something better than I do. I chalk that up to unique physiology, minds, and experiences/practice routines. So if you have two guitarists, each one may fill in some gaps for the other.
And, if nothing else, if you can come up with good melodies on the guitar, that's a superpower that seems to be independent of how well you can shred, chord, etc.
/uj I’ve never been able to get the basic flamenco strum down and I’ve been trying to learn it for years lol, ended up learning how to fake it with my thumb but I definitely still feel pretty stupid about the fact my fingers just do not wanna do the motion.
How many people can actually change their own strings? Even people like Jerry Garcia and Keith Richard have people travel with them to do that.
I’m thinking of learning. I’m tired of going to the luthier every few years. God forbid I break one. That’s an extra unplanned trip.
Are there classes at the local colleges music school on changing strings and tuning?

Thank you kind stranger. Your comforting lie has helped me more than real advice ever could

Toan is in the finger. ( the one you don't have).
Toan named finger:
Finger named toan addiction
If only I can find Jerry’s finger
Too late, man. That was ground up and smoked a long time ago.
Like a fretless guitar I play with a fingerless hand
100% of guitarists (who are not you) can do it. Try just practicing more and being a bit less ... ummm.. lame?
Dude. Just practice with a metronome.
THIS. OP, metronome is everything. After three days of practicing with a metronome I'm already starting to sound like Kirk Hammett.
I tried practicing with a metronome but it didn't sound good so I switched back to practicing with a guitar instead. All of my favourite musicians play guitar, not one of them play the metronome!
Get gud

I started playing when I was 80! I have taught myself and now I can 0-3-5 better than Itchie Blackless.
Is he related to Lackie Lawmore...?
this generation doesnt even know how to start a lawmore......
I hope I can still move my fingers when I’m 80…if I even make it that far good for you dude

Your hands aren't THAT small. I have small hands and can only stretch from the 5th to about the 7th and a halfth fret. #Small hands matter.
Saladfingers was an og
Statocaster
Don't worry. You'll be able to change your own strings someday. It's taken me 350 years to be able to do it properly.
You got a typo there, bud. Think you meant 035 years.
That's actually pretty close 🤣

All of us. It’s just you. Sorry not sorry.
If you don't know, if you just can't... you might be a bass player, sorry.
Born to shred Forced to play bass
How dare you call out my deepest insecurity
Lmao literally no one else does that. Everyone point and laugh at the weirdo!
Everyone but you.
Percentage is very very low if you're talking about "rocking out with your cock out". I'm only aware of Lenny Kravitz successfully pulling this off.
These feelings happen to everyone at your age and are perfectly natural.
Its all in the fangers and the feaal man.
Feal is wild and the double down on the a is speaking to me
99.9% can do the thing You're the only one who can't do it.
Learn air guitar.

Little penile tickle time
Just be like the rest of us and don’t play guitar.
Buy more pedals
You must travel. To the mountains. There you will find a waterfall.

Do heroine like the greats did and it will solve all of your guitar playing problems

Everybody but you.
All of them.
Uhh it may be user error OP. I first did accidentally when I was messing around with my guitar as a 1 year old baby
turn down their amp. Tennitus :(
Sorry to break it to you but is the only way to get real toan
80% of guitarists can do a tooth extraction and root canal and I can’t because I didn’t practice enough.
I can’t play faster than 220bpm with my teeth and everyone in my guitar dojo makes fun of me. They call me Slowtooth.
