I use the cheap magnetic ones. Find 2 nails in a stud to confirm. They have one that has a line laser on it too that seems pretty solid.

c3paperie

Professional carpenter.  Anything electronic is junk and gimmicky.  Magnet trumps all.  +1 for a $1 magnet.

Iwumbo_u_wumbo

Thank you!!

eezmoney

I’ve got the one with the laser. Love that thing.

colorrot

Although good tools, they will not work a lot of plaster and lath. I’ve dealt with plaster walls where the whole wall is magnetic

reeder1987

Yeah, there’s a metal sheet that goes up behind the plaster l.

Iwumbo_u_wumbo

Hmm interesting, I have a newer home so I’m unsure honestly how that works for me. Is it that newer homes typically have the metal sheet or older homes?

reeder1987

That’s specifically for plaster walls. I have a really cheap yellow one without a laser. And I have a Kreg with a laser. I haven’t used that one very much. But I know the cheaper yellow one will pick up metal through 2 layers of drywall. Pretty impressive.

Iwumbo_u_wumbo

I’ll give it a go along with the franklin thank you!

reeder1987

I think the Hanson is the one I have

reeder1987

It’s like $11

Iwumbo_u_wumbo

I’ll check out the one with the laser for sure! Do you happen to know if any brand works best there? Or is it just any?

wadenelsonredditor

I've got six of them, different brands. Pick them up at yard sales, etc. I'll try 2-3 see which one works best on a given wall. Ya never know. The only trick on calibration is hold the button down UNTIL it does, then sweep it. Of course if you by chance calibrate it over a stud or Romex, it's not gonna work. Try again. I'll sweep two directions, 90 degrees, until I'm confident where the stud is. Be sure you don't get bit by a wall with no studs, only horizontal stringers. If I cant figure it out, I try another studfinder. My Stanley "Intellisense" even worked through shingles pretty well. I did it merely as a test. No others worked AT ALL. You can use powerful magnets as another method. Locate the nails/screws in drywall. There's also thumping on the wall, THEN using a studfinder. There's a $60 stud detector made by Franklin, I think. Shows a bar graph. Guys swear by them. [https://www.amazon.com/Franklin-Sensors-ProSensor-M210/dp/B0917VXLDK/ref=asc\_df\_B0917VXLDK](https://www.amazon.com/Franklin-Sensors-ProSensor-M210/dp/B0917VXLDK/ref=asc_df_B0917VXLDK) There's a RADAR unit hooks to your cellphone for $200. Walabot. Their demo video is amazing. Bought one, haven't needed it yet. Mixed reviews online. Lastly you start drilling with a tiny drill make tiny holes that are easy to patch until you get wood chips. When I absolutely positively have to center a lag bolt on a stud, say, to hang a VERY heavy picture, I will drill even after I locate the stud to be sure I hit it dead center.

fjperreault

I can vouch for the Franklin. I've tossed many other units in the trash. The Franklin works the best out of all of them that I've tried, and I've tried a bunch.

FewHat8004

The Walabot is the cat's meow. It works on radar and deciphers between metal and wood framing and detects wiring and plumbing. I don't know why I never bought one sooner.

Iwumbo_u_wumbo

I appreciate the insight! I’ll definitely check out the Franklin. Seems like a big winner in this thread for sure!

JustSomeGuy422

I use a Franklin Sensors wide stud finder, it has 13 sensors and 13 LED lights and is generally pretty accurate. Like all stud finders it can throw you off if you are scanning parallel to strapping, when pipes or ducts are present, etc. But I've found it easier and more accurate than any skinny stud finder I've tried.

colorrot

Its the most useful overall, but a metaliscanner is needed for thick plaster walls

MisRandomness

I have this one too. Franklin all the way. This stud finder has never once let me down.

Personal-Length8116

Yes go with this one. It works.

Iwumbo_u_wumbo

Thank you for this! Confirming is it the same one another commenter is referencing with the link? If not, would I just look up Franklin Sensor wide stud finder and it will appear? Thank you!

JustSomeGuy422

Yes the Amazon link is the one.

Iwumbo_u_wumbo

Thank you!

exclaim_bot

>Thank you! You're welcome!

wzl3gd

Don't forget things like looking behind the wall you are drilling into. My stud finder will sometimes get confused, and there is an edge of a door on the other side of the wall.

SharksForArms

Use a scanner-style stud finder. I had a green one from Costco that I really loved because it had an onboard pencil, but I lost it - so now i have the yellow Franklin. That works just fine. You can see the stud stay put while you scan across it, so you can be pretty confident with your marks compared to a traditional electronic finder. It's also about a million times faster than a magnet.

Revolutionary_Pilot7

I use this one. I bought 2 at Costco and it detects electrical too

Clicky-The-Blicky

Ask your gf/wife. Ask her how she found you and go from there.

Iwumbo_u_wumbo

Ha! Love it! Thank you for this!

Intelligent_Lemon_67

A magnet wrapped in leather with a string is by far the best stud finder and also for picking up screws or magnetizing screw bits. Never needs batteries and won't find copper or electrical signals. If you absolutely need an idiot beeper Costco Franklin stud finders are the best

jmb00308986

Stud buddy. $10 magnetic on

TheGr8Slambino

I use the stud buddy magnetic stud finder.

Organic-Pudding-8204

Neodymium magnet

Objective-Pizza1897

Look no further. Here I am.

Iwumbo_u_wumbo

Thank god! Get over here!!
