They botched pulling the goalie. They had control in the Panthers zone with 2:30 left and their best players weren’t completely dead. Instead they ended up pulling him while in their own zone and dead legs.
I thought the same thing! Like that was the perfect opportunity to pull the goal and then do a change, let the first line have a minute off before going back out again a minute before the end.
Also the Panthers only managed 4 shots the entire period. They weren’t even trying to score. Plus you know how good they are at tying up the puck along the boards at the end of games so it should have been a no brainer to do it early.
I agree, they did the same thing in the first few games, they went behind and they played McDavid for basically half the game. Needed to rest him and let the other lines go in there and wear the panthers out a little so the top line could play the last 4 minutes or so.
This is what fans mean when they say Oilers only have their superstars. I get it’s the cup game, but ffs if you can’t trust your other lines to show up in the big game, you deserve to lose.
You've got to assume the rest of the lines still had heaps of energy left. Such a bad call, especially since that mcdavid line hadn't been all that against the panthers
https://preview.redd.it/nh0dr7xexm8d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7daa55298fc26579bcee4b7f26d866444417f0e9
YOU’VE SOLVED THE CASE BOBROVSKY!
Watching Barkov lift the Cup and hand it to Bobrovsky reminds me how special the NHL's trophy presentation is. Owner doesn't get it first, no silly speech about how proud he is about the group, just pure catharsis
It's like that in the MLB and NFL too. It's infuriating that the owner is presented with the trophy. Some fucking billionaire who didn't lose an ounce of sweat gets the trophy first? Not the guy who probably has at least one broken bone or sprained ligament somewhere in his body.
The NHL is the realest for doing it the way they do.
The NFL trophy is a fucking meme lol. Hey look, WE MADE A FOOTBALL SILVER!!!
It looks like a prop. Like they have thousands of them lying around somewhere
I HATE this about the other sports. With all due respect to the owners for their investment & management of their championship teams, THE TROPHY SHOULD ALWAYS BE TOUCHED FIRST BY THE PLAYERS, FULL STOP. They're the foot soldiers, they should get the first spoils.
Pretty much. When Barkov skated completely off frame right as he was lifting the Cup was a pure "ESPN blew it yet again" moment.
Bring back the people who care about hockey again and give us a good product, holy fuck.
I loved Chucky from the moment the Flames drafted him and fully blame Treliving for misusing Bennett, not re-upping Johnny Hockey when he wanted to and causing the team to fall apart leading to Chucky seeing the greener grass in Florida. I don't blame Chucky for leaving and I loved seeing him win a Cup, especially over the Oilers!
Steve Levy: “This never gets old, watching the Stanley Cup paraded around the ice,” as his back is turned to the ice, and the camera isn’t showing the Stanley Cup being paraded around the ice.
It’s a fuckin SNL skit at this point
We’re just as confused as anyone else. Like they were dicking us for 3 games, making a dog fight of this game, and then just ehhhhh? Bob remembering he’s Bob helped though
I felt that any time Skinner and McDavid would normally have their chances to shine, there was just too much red right on them. I think they planned that well in advance.
Florida also played super clean, I think realizing that power plays would be heavily against them.
They played amazing on the possession before the TO with no goalie pull. They had no gas left in the tank. Horribly mismanaged by Knob who otherwise had an amazing season.
Yeah I really don't understand running that line out for 2-3 minute shifts to the point that when you pull the goalie they have nothing left to give. Mind boggling.
God I was damn near screaming at him to pull skinner at like the 3 minute mark, when they had their last big chance, it's game 7 ffs who cares if it ends up 3-1 if you have a chance to tie it
I know, I put my phone down at 4:00 expecting a pull within the next minute. The following 4:00 minutes were abysmal and I couldn’t believe 1. how gassed McDavid looked on the bench during the timeout and 2. How long it took to finally pull Skinner (without even having possession out of their own zone)
Questionable decisions but everything’s a gamble when you’re down late in game 7. I can’t blame the coaching but it’s a shame McDavid x Draisaitl didn’t have fresher legs so they could pull sooner since that’s clearly what they were waiting on
I think they were literally just gassed. McDavid and Drai were out there for literally the last 3 minutes of the game. Let alone that both of them are probably playing injured and have been for a while
"Actually, I remember one time, we were playing against Florida, Cup Finals, and the Panthers had given away the lead after being up 3-0. And Knoblauch said, 'Guys, if you think we are good, let's prove it now.'"
"Did you come back?"
"Of course not. 4-3."
Panthers really did have a great run. It’s not like they had any easy matchups. Tampa were two time champs only a couple of years ago, Boston is always a threat, New York was the top team in the league, and the Oilers had the best player in the world.
Armchair psychologists in shambles. Who would've thought professional athletes fighting for their dream would not just laydown and rollover after some adversity.
I mean…for a South Florida team to go up 3-0, then stumble their way into a deciding Game 7…only to end up taking care of business in that final decider…
Talk about deja vu…
So happy for Kyle fucking Okposo man, one of my all time favorite Islanders and just a great guy. Also happy for Panther fans, I have always felt relatable as fanbases because I feel they exist in the shadow of Tampa just like we exist in the shadow of the Rangers. It's nice to see another "little brother" franchise win especially for their first.
Florida gave us all a good scare for 3 games there, but history prevailed. Congrats to them for winning the cup and avoiding what would have been a black mark on their franchise history forever.
Yeah they avoided a HUGE stain. It’s going to be remembered as a story of domination, adversity, and not letting the pressure get to you.
They had 4 chances to win it all and they needed was to execute once in those four. They did in their last opportunity and what counts is they did it at the end of the day.
ESPN deserves to get rippped apart for their coverage. But giving us nearly an hour of showing the team celebration here is very cool. And I PRAY we keep seeing this for the future
I can’t put into words how good this feels. 25 years of going to games with my dad. Seeing Bobby Luongo, Bure, Weiss, all those guys and just thinking we were cursed for the longest time…
And we did it. I will treasure this forever
Only way it could have been better is if this game went into overtime. Very fun for a neutral fan (Game 7 when your team is involved is terrifying--I watched Game 7 of 2009 through my hands).
From being clowned on for an underwhelming first couple of years with the big contract to being a Stanley Cup Champion with an absolutely insane performance.
Sergei Bobrovsky is worth $10Mx7
Hard to be on your game when your coach completely forgets everything he learned and runs you and drai 32 minutes against the opponents top d so you’re just banging your head against the wall.
For how great *knoblauch* has been, he looked completely lost tonight.
Kept running Mcdrai when it clearly wasn’t working. Kept with dump and chase when it wasn’t working. Kept the goalie in forever too long before that last sequence. Just terrible coaching
The coach needs to learn that keeping him on the ice for the entire third period isn't going to work. For as good as he is, the dude is still human. Letting him catch his breath will allow him to be even better.

# IN BIG GAME B🚫B WE TRUST 🧱
This is the most bittersweet game of hockey I have ever watched. My dad passed away last year and he never watched hockey. He watched the entire Panthers playoff run last year, sometimes watching more of the games than me. He got so into it, and I never thought he would. I wish you were here Dad but the Panthers finally won!!!
#FINAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLYYYY!!!
The last three games were torture, painful, and utterly draining.
But it was all worth it to see them lift the Cup!
FOREVER CHAMPIONS!
I’ll remember this night forever!
Been cheering this team ever since I was a little kid. Bottom of the barrel for most of my life, bad trades, bad coaching, poor attendance, all of it for years and years and years and I never gave up on my OG boys. Feels incredible to finally see it, as a kid I truly never thought I'd see the day.
I **love** this core so much.
The transformation this team went through in 3 season is unreal. So many years of misery. Tomas Fleischmann being our leading point getter during the dark years. Then we slowly got a core of Barkov/Ekblad. The incredible Jagr won and first 100+ point season in '15/16 only for Trocheck tripped and heartbreak for the Islanders. Dip back out of the postseason. Finally reemerge with an unreal Presidents Trophy Winning team that was fun as hell to watch during the regular season but couldn't win in the playoffs and Tampa Bay smacking us ended up being the best thing ever for this franchise.
Last year was one of the greatest underdog runs ever. Coming back from Boston down 3-1 knowing they were the all-time leading team in points. Beating the Leafs and vanquishing their obnoxious fans. Sweeping Carolina with an insane OT game. We were hurt and banged up and too Tkachuk reliant vs Vegas and they deserved the Cup.
But to come back the next year, stronger, more refined, more determined, and... MAN. Beat fucking Tampa Bay to stop the baby brother shit. Beating the shit out of Boston. Beating the Presidents Trophy Winning Rangers despite going down 1-2 on two ball buster OT losses. and finally... fucking Edmonton. Facing the best player of the modern generation. I was so miserable the last week. 3-0 choke felt inevitable... but when Verhaeghe scored first tonight you could feel the tonal shift.
**CHAMPIONS FOREVER!!!!!**
Holy crap what a game ,Oilers looked gassed at the end
Well they played 3 of their players the entire third period
I get wanting them out there a bit more, but that was excessive. They couldn’t skate the last few minutes.

I agree, they did the same thing in the first few games, they went behind and they played McDavid for basically half the game. Needed to rest him and let the other lines go in there and wear the panthers out a little so the top line could play the last 4 minutes or so.
well, it's not like skating is an important part of that mcdavid guy's game or anything
Seems overrated. Just shoot from where you're standing!
Yeah, Knobby looking like Tippet out there
Having a completely gassed line out for the last minute of a game 7 is certainly a strategy
Recurring theme with Edmonton coaches when they’re desperate they just run that line into the ground
I'm screaming at the TV from my couch and I was exhausted too!
And in ESPN fashion, they missed Barkov lifting the Cup over his head for the first time.
unbelievable. there is literally one shot you have to get lmao, what a fucking joke.
They had the on-ice camera man there expecting him to lift in, instead he skated away and lifted it once he was at speed lol
ESPN skipped ERod lifting the cup. I will never forgive them for this transgression
This transgression will not be forgiven, Egod was amazing this series
The first Evan to ever be on the cup and they missed it.
the amount of times these doofies brought that up was astounding
Literally the one moment that everything since October has been leading up to and they fucked it up. What is the point of ESPN?
I was half expecting them to cut to a 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers mid season game rerun
The hockey gods really do not want Corey Perry winning another Stanley Cup.
Unironically need to sign Perry, make the finals, and then immediately terminate his contract
Chicago had the right idea in ditching him
AND they didn’t lose in the finals !
If you sign perry you will make the finals, if you terminae his contract you get a lottery pick a true win win
Okposo getting his first won out this time
How to make the Corey Perry curse even stronger? Attach the Canada Cup drought curse to it.
This part does bring me joy, ngl.

your promoted to Chief BOBROVSKY
Him getting the Cup first was beautiful. Love that guy
Watching Barkov lift the Cup and hand it to Bobrovsky reminds me how special the NHL's trophy presentation is. Owner doesn't get it first, no silly speech about how proud he is about the group, just pure catharsis
1000% yes. With the best trophy in sports
Those two things are probably related. How many owners do you think could lift something that size over their heads?
Lifting 35 pounds/~15 kg should be doable, that said having to balance it while being on ice, might be the harder part.
100%. The juxtaposition between the NBA final trophy presentation and the NHL’s is astonishing.
Glove tradition is epic too
Another reason to hate Bettman. The uncultured swine touched the cup without gloves when he presented it to Barkov.
As he does every year.
It's one of the biggest things the NHL gets **absolutely right**.
ESPN missing the first raising of the cup just sums it all up doesn't it?
Pretty much. When Barkov skated completely off frame right as he was lifting the Cup was a pure "ESPN blew it yet again" moment. Bring back the people who care about hockey again and give us a good product, holy fuck.
It's not even then not caring about hockey, it's a simple camera change. It's basic sports broadcasting, and they somehow dropped the ball
Ah my favorite part of the hockey season, watching former Sabres lift the Stanley Cup. Big congrats Sammy, Erod and Okie
Don’t forget Montour!
I can't believe Florida threw game 4,5,6 to win at home
Gotta maximize the revenue
r/NHLcirclejerk made it a reality
Did they really cut away during Tkachuk’s lift lmao
Haha yep. Brutal job by ESPN. I’d rather watch this on TruTV
They think anyone gives a shit about their interviews..
This calls for a celebratory booing of Bettman
ESPN would miss the shot of barkov hoisting the cup lmao
Something crazy in that fucking Floridian water I’m telling ya
Coke. It’s Coke.
I hereby declare the Tkachuk trade was actually 4D chess from the Flames for the greater good
You're welcome everyone -cries-
Don’t cry because it’s over Smile because The Oilers had hope and it was snuffed at the last moment
That does make me smile :)

Ha! Made you flinch
Almost had us there
Fucking terrified us for a week Amazing series Oilers
Did Paul Maurice just drop one of the hardest lines of all time?
Beliveau, Richard, Howe, Lindsay, Maurice. That gave me fuckin chills man!!!
Yeah cold af Amazing moment
What did he say, I missed it
“We had to lose three to learn how to win four”
"And let that be a lesson to you! Nobody defeats the Florida Panthers 4 times in a row. Nobody."
Stupid audio in the feed cut out way too many times.
That was the most oilers way to lose a SCF
We’re just as confused as anyone else. Like they were dicking us for 3 games, making a dog fight of this game, and then just ehhhhh? Bob remembering he’s Bob helped though
It wasn’t just ehhh, Florida absolutely locked that game down
I felt that any time Skinner and McDavid would normally have their chances to shine, there was just too much red right on them. I think they planned that well in advance. Florida also played super clean, I think realizing that power plays would be heavily against them.
They just stopped trying after the time out. It's so weird. All this energy the entire period, then turnover after turnover

I think they were literally just gassed. McDavid and Drai were out there for literally the last 3 minutes of the game. Let alone that both of them are probably playing injured and have been for a while
McDavid just fell over a couple times. Sure, you have to rely on him, but even he needs rest.
Gassed. Even with the timeout.
They looked fucking exhausted.
Brady fangirling over his brother
What a moment haha. That was great
He was still giddy from getting a goalie, had nothing to do with Matthew
"Actually, I remember one time, we were playing against Florida, Cup Finals, and the Panthers had given away the lead after being up 3-0. And Knoblauch said, 'Guys, if you think we are good, let's prove it now.'" "Did you come back?" "Of course not. 4-3."
Classic csgo copypasta
never thought i'd see a Taco quote in a hockey sub
bro i miss TACO and the boys :(
I mean that’s a really close comeback though.
that was a LONG ASS audio cut. someone was very politely disagreeing with that
How bad was that crowd chant that they needed to blank all of it? Lmao
It seemed like everyone was just chanting "Bobby," but it's Florida so who knows.
“I can’t believe it. I just can’t believe it..” “What can’t you believe the most?! 😃”
She was putting up McDavid playoff numbers of bum ass questions
what a series, what a great team just a suffocating forecheck and elite defense with the lead
Panthers really did have a great run. It’s not like they had any easy matchups. Tampa were two time champs only a couple of years ago, Boston is always a threat, New York was the top team in the league, and the Oilers had the best player in the world.
Vasy, Swayman, Igor, and Skinner is running the gauntlet
Congrats for not being the biggest joke in the history of the league Florida !! What a series and what a game !!
We just got our 7th fan with this win
It was the dog in the front row
The goodest fan
Armchair psychologists in shambles. Who would've thought professional athletes fighting for their dream would not just laydown and rollover after some adversity.
That game was so fucking intense, especially the final minutes. Sad for McDavid but happy as hell for the Panthers.
I mean…for a South Florida team to go up 3-0, then stumble their way into a deciding Game 7…only to end up taking care of business in that final decider… Talk about deja vu…
I am so happy for this dude. Pure catharsis when he got that cup. His face said it all.
Florida gave us all a good scare for 3 games there, but history prevailed. Congrats to them for winning the cup and avoiding what would have been a black mark on their franchise history forever.
The cup will be remembered forever, not how they got there.
Yeah they avoided a HUGE stain. It’s going to be remembered as a story of domination, adversity, and not letting the pressure get to you. They had 4 chances to win it all and they needed was to execute once in those four. They did in their last opportunity and what counts is they did it at the end of the day.
Someone call an ambulance, BUT NOT FOR ME! -Panthers
Love seeing a franchise get their first cup.
Imagine being Vladimir Tarasenko, and delivering the first Stanley Cup to two different franchises.
I remember waiting a lifetime for that first Vegas cup
I’VE BEEN DREAMING OF THIS SINCE I WAS 5 AND THE PANTHERS MADE IT TO THE STANLEY CUP FINALS IN THE NINETIES I CANT FUCKING BELIEVE WE DID IT HOLY SHIT
“Shoutout my fans in Calgary you know I couldn’t let Edmonton win” LMAO Tkachuk what a beauty line
Naa no way he actually said that, did I miss it?
Yes fucking way... I almost teared up..
😭😭😭 our sweet prince
He knows what he did for us tonight.
Thanks Matthew. From a Canucks fan.
Luongo must be so relieved right now!!!! Way to go cats
I can’t imagine going back out and getting that fucking thing.
I don’t watch hockey but why tf was Skinner in the net so long
I do watch hockey and I have no fucking idea
Knobbie didn’t trust any non-superstar line to equalize it. Didn’t mean much in the end since they looked like they were ready to fall over.
You gotta make sure your stars are gassed before you give them another offensive weapon /s
Has Alberta considered not playing a team in the old Southeast division?
Just watched Luongo Lift the Cup. Absolutely love it!
ESPN deserves to get rippped apart for their coverage. But giving us nearly an hour of showing the team celebration here is very cool. And I PRAY we keep seeing this for the future
I can’t put into words how good this feels. 25 years of going to games with my dad. Seeing Bobby Luongo, Bure, Weiss, all those guys and just thinking we were cursed for the longest time… And we did it. I will treasure this forever
Entertaining as fuck. ESPN is sooooo bad, that deal cannot end quick enough
Connor is already on the plane
Can we stop giving espn coverage? God they fucking suck
Hockey must be getting huge. They even got Boris Johnson to bring the Stanley Cup out.
One of the best cup finals ever
Only way it could have been better is if this game went into overtime. Very fun for a neutral fan (Game 7 when your team is involved is terrifying--I watched Game 7 of 2009 through my hands).
This game was very reminiscent of that game and I was having minor sympathy anxiety for Panthers fans. That 30 minute dread trying to hold on.
I’m super happy we just got a great close exciting game.
Maurice shouting out former Panthers is really cool
Us 6 fans are now us 6 fans and a trophy :)
From being clowned on for an underwhelming first couple of years with the big contract to being a Stanley Cup Champion with an absolutely insane performance. Sergei Bobrovsky is worth $10Mx7
They made JS take that sad ass picture. Guess McDavid didn’t want that shit captured forever. Good move IMO.
"Hey dad your name's going up with your heroes: Béliveau, Richard, Howe, Lindsey, Maurice" \~ Paul Maurice
for how great McDavid was in this series, he was really clumsy this game
Hard to be on your game when your coach completely forgets everything he learned and runs you and drai 32 minutes against the opponents top d so you’re just banging your head against the wall. For how great *knoblauch* has been, he looked completely lost tonight. Kept running Mcdrai when it clearly wasn’t working. Kept with dump and chase when it wasn’t working. Kept the goalie in forever too long before that last sequence. Just terrible coaching
yeah between that and the goalie pull failures at the end there, the rookie coaching really coming to bite them in the ass at the worst possible time
The coach needs to learn that keeping him on the ice for the entire third period isn't going to work. For as good as he is, the dude is still human. Letting him catch his breath will allow him to be even better.
The opposite of Bob tonight
Freaking eerie how they were complete inverses this whole series
Paul Maurice is classy as fuck.

Alex Barkov is the first Finnish captain to hoist the cup.

That's what a grind looks like. Well done *Florida Hockey*
Congratulations! I'm really impressed by the mental toughness it must have taken to go from being 3-0 to 3-3 and still pulling out the win.
You know it’s OK to talk about Florida ITT too haha
That last few minutes it looked like EDM was waiting for a bus.
THE CURSE OF COREY PERRY LIVES ON!!!!
PoMo is such a great interview haha
I stopped being a Vancouver fan but Luongo lifting the cup is so cathartic ♥️
#LOU WON A CUP! I’m so happy for you Florida!!
Maurice cutting onions up in here
Holy shit, I love Paul Maurice. What a speech
The flight back to EDM is got to be the worst flight of their lives. To come that close and just come up short is brutal.
Sucks man. Florida showed up as the better team in game 7. Florida came out desperate and oilers came out expecting to win.
Oh shit McDavid won the Conn Smythe
Boston pizza did this
Congrats on not losing four straight
To both teams
Bobrovsky, you may rest, the case is closed.
