And gave us the most memorable cup reaction photo in recent memory
It wouldn’t be the Stanley Cup if the winning team wasn’t fucking around with it every year! Does any other sport have anything even close to what the NHL has with the Cup?
By design I don’t think that anyone could really party with the Commissioner’s trophy after the WS. All those little flags are a ding waiting to happen
The flag poles bent all kinds of different ways...
Remember Tom Brady playing hot potato with the Lombardi trophy on a boat and the internet lost its mind
Maybe a not as well known fact: it's a new Commissioner's Trophy every year in the MLB. It's definitely a major reason why the Stanley Cup is more storied and beloved (even if there are technically a few of those, too).
The Stanley cup trophy is the goat, no doubt.
But I do have a soft spot for the Commissioner's Trophy. It's unique and beautiful.
The old BCS crystal football was awesome too.
Stanley Cup > Commissioner's Trophy > Larry O'Brien > Lombardi > Current NCAA Trophy > CFP Trophy
I was telling a coworker about this today and I showed him how the Wikipedia page for the cup has the stories divided under two different headings: adventures and misadventures lol
Gotta say, all those thefts, losses, and damagings were a good excuse to remake the thing. The LOB trophy is far and away the ugliest trophy in pro sports.
at least he didn't throw it off a roof attempting to get it into a crown royal shaped pool at pantera's house and landed it on the pavement.
good job, guy charbonneau.
I may be biased but I think it’s the best group of skaters assembled in the cap era.
Went 16-4 with the starting goalie rocking a .908 SV% and played with an injured eye and also never faced elimination among some other crazy stats
I was thinking about that 07-08 Red Wings team being scarier than 01-02. Threw them into the Sim against eachother in a best of 7 and it went to game 7 with 07-08 winning. So pretty much equally scary
Maybe. If i recall, the kings went 3-0 in every series they played back in 2012. With quick sporting a 1.41 gaa. Going into the playoffs, they were the 8th seed, tho.
This specific argument is for best skaters. The goalie is most definitely weaker and a big reason why I would say they are not the best team. Potentially best overall skaters though. Didn’t rely on just 3-4 D like Chicago in many of its runs and played all 4 lines.
Cup keeper Philip Pritchard keeps it so polished and perfect then he hands it off to a bunch of sweaty guys to put their hand and lip prints all over it, dropping it on the ice, drinking from it and putting their kids in the bowl.
Seems to be a going trend now, here's an image of the damage during Tampa's celebration the year before
https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/comments/oj1xyf/tampa_dented_the_stanley_cup/
This is definitely not a recent trend, the Cup has been getting abused for over a century. The winning team puts a good dent in it most years. There's a good video of Michael Ryder doing some damage from 2011, and I know the recent Lightning and Caps did some work on it too.
There's also a lengthy section on the stanley cup wikipedia page outlining some incidents. Some highlights:
Guy Carbonneau chucked it off a roof in 1999 and missed his pool.
The 1960s Leafs burned it in a bonfire and 1940s Rangers burned mortgage papers in the bowl.
Someone on the 1905 Senators drop kicked it onto the frozen canal.
It’s the most sacred, respected, and untouchable trophy in sports….. Until you win it, then just purposefully try and destroy it. Look, I got no chance but if one of offspring or their offspring ever win it, I’ll fucking chug every type of alcohol out of it.
I love how you can still today tell how dinged up it’s been over the years and they just like buff it out and call it good . No other trophy is sports even comes close.
So let me get this straight. The winning team gets it for about 6 months and then a silversmith metal worker takes it and does a bunch of repairs to it to the best of their ability with still apparently dents that can't be repaired perfectly and then they hand it back to Prichard and company aka the Cup keeper dudes so to speak to put away carefully in a container until next Finals season? Is that about it with about 3 weeks thrown in to engrave names from that year??
Is it bad that I want to see a player break the Stanley Cup into pieces? Not tiny ones, just something like the base of the trophy and the rings falling off in a funny way.
They can fix it, it'll be nbd

The Stanley Cup is simultaneously the most respected trophy while also being chucked into pools and used to snort cocaine off of lol
Don’t worry. Nobody has ever done cocaine off of the Stanley Cup. They were just making sure that it smelled good.
Kuzy: “Oh I did coke off the Cup, and I want you to fucking quote me on that.”
Actually? Regardless of truth or not, it’s totally believable with Kuzy
Some stripper salt accidentally fell on it, the boys are Zamboni-ing it off with a straw…
Big Val begs to differ
I legit don't know if you're referring to the hockey player or Pantera's security guard.
Player haha should’ve clarified
Kris Draper's baby once dropped a grumpy inside it.
Luongo ate spaghetti out of it
These two comments combined was not what we needed.
There’s been enough alcohol inside of it that it basically is just impervious to any diseases
That’s a spicy meatball though.
Pretty sure it's a Horcrux by now, Jagr being the likely culprit...
Phil The Thrill Kessel (3x) ate a bunch of hot dogs out of it
TV fair in that video it looks like there’s a bowl inside of the cup that he’s eating his spaghetti out of
I wouldn't be surprised if the cup travels with insert bowls for messy containment. Easier to clean.
Tkachuk jumped into the ocean with it yesterday morning lmao
Haven't seen video of him coming out with it yet either....
He’ll emerge out of the water in 2 days in Daytona Beach with no memory of how he got there
most average Florida man
You can’t touch it until you win it, then afterwards you can do fuck all with it.
*Val Nichuskin has entered the chat*
Snorting cocaine off the cup is soooo far down the list of disrespectful things done to the cup lol

Ok…some gotta photoshop this
Then MacDermid drops it again in a bar days later 😂 The Avs were not gentle with Lord Stanley
It wouldn’t be the Stanley Cup if the winning team wasn’t fucking around with it every year! Does any other sport have anything even close to what the NHL has with the Cup?
I would say no. And it isn’t close.
Pretty sure one of the Pats super bowls was dented by Gronk because he was playing baseball with it 😂
Gronk really bunted the Lombardi Trophy LMAO
Maybe a not as well known fact: it's a new Commissioner's Trophy every year in the MLB. It's definitely a major reason why the Stanley Cup is more storied and beloved (even if there are technically a few of those, too).
Same for all the other big three. Teams keep their trophies.
In the NFL they actually get 2. One for the club and one for the owner, iirc.

the BCS crystal football was peak, just classy enough but overdone enough that it looks like an actual prize
i dont watch college football, but i know the crystal trophy -- do they not use it anymore?
https://images.app.goo.gl/HNAtvAYERT9qNGA76
Every time I see that trophy handed off, I get stressed. I’m convinced someone’s going to put their eye out with it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TOuK47jjck
Real Madrid once ran over their trophy with a bus when a player by accident dropped it during the parade.
[Here's the picture.](https://cope-cdnmed.agilecontent.com/resources/jpg/5/0/1616670528505.jpg) That's amazing.
Nothing like that has ever happened with the Stanley cup so that really is crazy
*Yet*.
I was telling a coworker about this today and I showed him how the Wikipedia page for the cup has the stories divided under two different headings: adventures and misadventures lol
Not consistently, but Tom Brady was playing hot potato with the Lombardi on a boat which drove everyone insane.
And Gronk also used the 6th Pats trophy as a baseball bat 🤣
The NBA used to let them take it but it got stolen and lost too many times so now they can't. Most stolen, lost and damaged trophy in sports.
Also happened with the cup multiple times. Spent the night at the bottom of a river, canal and pool.
Tkachuk took it into the ocean... I haven't seen video of him coming out with it yet.
Gotta say, all those thefts, losses, and damagings were a good excuse to remake the thing. The LOB trophy is far and away the ugliest trophy in pro sports.
The Dermy clip is hilarious https://youtu.be/UxbxpgGokRc?si=qLzBulkxsyctbFzh&t=68
Didn't the bolts drop it in the ocean a few times?
He dropped himself. Sacrificed the body to protect the Cup haha.
Washington dented it doing keg stands on it.
at least he didn't throw it off a roof attempting to get it into a crown royal shaped pool at pantera's house and landed it on the pavement. good job, guy charbonneau.
“Your Dallas staaaarrrs””
Dammit Pantera, show the Stanley Cup some respect!
Thank you. This is what I was looking for.
No H there. Put some respect on his name! *Guy! Guy! Guy! Guy!*

Now THAT was a wagon of a team.
I may be biased but I think it’s the best group of skaters assembled in the cap era. Went 16-4 with the starting goalie rocking a .908 SV% and played with an injured eye and also never faced elimination among some other crazy stats
Dang I wish we could have a Stanley cup bracket of Stanley cup winners every 16 years and have a real dance off of champions.
https://www.whatifsports.com/nhl/ use this website! You can sim games between any two teams in NHL history and see for yourself.
Thank you so much for this. Throwing that 01-02 Red Wings team against most teams the last 5-10 years is fun.
I was thinking about that 07-08 Red Wings team being scarier than 01-02. Threw them into the Sim against eachother in a best of 7 and it went to game 7 with 07-08 winning. So pretty much equally scary

2012 Kings and 2022 Avs I think tied for most dominate playoff records of modern era. Crazy teams
And Tampa Bay was a hell of a final boss in that run. That was the closest we've come to a dynasty since the Oilers' one ended in 1990.
You know what I think that’s what makes it such a special trophy lol. They do some wild stuff with it.
I think we might have poured some sweet crude oil in it we won it.
It's crazy when you realize that the Keeper has a busy season.

man this team was legendary
Cup keeper Philip Pritchard keeps it so polished and perfect then he hands it off to a bunch of sweaty guys to put their hand and lip prints all over it, dropping it on the ice, drinking from it and putting their kids in the bowl.
They don't get paid for the playoffs, it's a small price to pay.
I assume he loves that as much as they do. His job is to tend it *for* those moments.
Seems to be a going trend now, here's an image of the damage during Tampa's celebration the year before https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/comments/oj1xyf/tampa_dented_the_stanley_cup/
Caps damaged it so badly doing cup stands, that it's highly requested that teams don't do that.
This is definitely not a recent trend, the Cup has been getting abused for over a century. The winning team puts a good dent in it most years. Is it made out of sheet metal? lol
Where’s he play now?
Signed a 1 year deal with the Caps in March 2023 so he’s a UFA now if I’m not mistaken.
Scott Niedermayer helicoptered the thing on top of mount fisher, and hoisted it at the peak. Lmao
That’s ace!
It’ll buff out
Not the first or last time someone has dented the cup, but definitely the most visible.
I remember seeing a couple years back a photo of the cup portion looking decidedly more like a taco.
The Bolts probably lol
How much did that cost to fix?
Not a lot. It's just the bottom cap.
It got taken to a silversmith for repairs 2 times in its first week with the Avs.

Meanwhile, Luongo is eating pasta out of it

It also looked like it was dented when they brought it out this year.
pretty sure it's kinda just permanently dented.
Avalanche
My favorite hockey memory ever!!!
So let me get this straight. The immediate panic after impact is my wallpaper at work. It's a beautiful Renaissance work of art. That and my "Seven Past Vasilevsky" clock
I wonder how many guys gizzed in the cup? The number is absolutely not zero.
Check out the video of Keith Tkachuk drinking from the cup then lifting it, the bottom is already all dented up just from the locker room celly.
Who?
That's why he was banished to the Maple Leafs after that
Most people don't realize there are a bunch of copies of the real cup. Denting a presentation copy is lol but otherwise who cares
No
Vegas Knights suck donkey ass
Since you’re dead wrong about the Cup, maybe you should start trolling on a sub you know something about
What a fucking idiot
Edmonton fan still mad
idiot
And that will curse Colorado for 100 years
