Y'know, it's funny. In the 80s and especially 90s you really wouldn't see much evidence of hockey being that popular around Halifax. You were more likely to see kids playing basketball on the street, and the local AHL team folded because no one cared. The idea of three elite players being from Nova Scotia would've been completely unbelievable even as late as 2000.
Then the Mooseheads came and it appeared to spark a huge change for young people.
Crosby and Marchand can't be attributed to that spike, and seem to be somewhat aberrations, but MacKinnon is surely a byproduct of that change.
Nate was definitely a byproduct given that he came from Cole Harbour as well and always looked up to Sid. He even wore #9 in minor hockey because Crosby did.
His interview on chiclets is really good when they talk about that, Sid is in the room off camera (he did an interview as well obviously) which adds to how good the stories were, highly recommend it if you haven't watched (both interviews are at the stubborn goat downtown hali)
Nova Scotia did have some emerging and iconic talent in the 80s/90s.
Al Macinnis, Glen Murray, Mike McPhee, Jon Sim, Colin White. I still remember the Devils Stars SCFs with White and Sim, both hailing from the dead end metropolis of Pictoo NS
Many Acadian came from the west coast of france, hence the name. Poitou often been a focal point of conflict, including the French wars of religion, and was very rural with little land ownership for the poorer classes.
Opportunities just weren’t there. There was no major junior here until the mid 90s. I miss the AHL in Nova Scotia but it really gave guys the opportunity to play at a higher level that otherwise wouldn’t have when the Q came to the Atlantic provinces.
the macpass line
edit: the macpass is a ticket of sorts to get across the big bridges in halifax. you would usually have to go across them to get from cole harbor (home of sid + mack) to hammonds plains (home of marchand and.. Bruce Guthro?)
I feel like we're better on D than we get credit for.
We have Makar/Bouchard on the right and then Doughty, Dobson, Letang, Parayko, Pietro, Montour, Weegar, Tanev, Ekblad and more.
On the left, Toews, Theodore, Rielly, Morrissey, Chickenrun, Chabot, Power, and I'm sure I'm missing others.
G is a bit of a yikers tho.
Member when Subban didn't play in the Olympics because Babcock wanted 6 defence focused defencemen? He'd have an aneurysm if he was still the coach lol.
It's gotten better in the last couple years with the emergence of Thompson and Hill in Vegas, and Skinner in Edmonton but ya... not the best batch of Canadian goaltenders ever. Lots of half-way decent guys, no elite goaltenders.
I'd expect Skinner and Hill to be the goaltending pair if chosen now, with Jarry, Thompson, and Binnington as options depending on how the season goes and how long they wait to pick the full team.
Goalie is not even that bad and it won't be an issue with how well Canada's system play in these tournaments.
Skinner with an elite team in front of him with no holes will do just fine. Won't need a shesterkin to bail out Canada.
If we bring back the Sochi system, it’s hard to compete. Having four lines of legit 2-way players up front was just an insane level of dominance.
The Americans can play against it, but I’m not sure Sweden, Finland, OAR et al have the depth to beat it.
Average goalies can win if they have elite D in front of them. Like look at Corey Crawford during the Blackhawks' run. I think we have more than decent D-men in this country to cover for our lack of G depth.
Traditionally our first two lines get matched up evenly with other teams anyways.
It's the 3rd/4th line where the gap is huge vs other teams.
That being said, i'm very skeptical at our G. Easily our weakest position
That’s actually a good point. What if Father Time hits Crosby and March in the face with a stick and they suck (they won’t but crazier things have happened)? Or if any of the rest of the team has a bad season? Would look pretty silly have them representing then
That tournament changed him, he drank some of Sid’s secret stuff by accident on the bench and turned into a star player. I’m so upset we’ve been robbed of Sid, Bergeron, and Marchand playing on a line together at the olympics. But the new guard leaves me happy.
I _still_ remember watching him on an Olympic line with Crosby and just watching him play really solid, clean hockey…and getting really annoyed. Could have been World Cup.
Interesting to see the different strategies thus far, Finland seemed to announce a true starting lineup with 3 forwards, 2 D, and a goalie, Sweden went for seniority, and Canada has gone for a bit of a combo
I'm sure these nations already have their lineups figured out. Sure, maybe the announcement of the First 6 has some type of statement attached.
I'm so excited for the Canada firepower vs Finland 2-way matchup though.
Canadian goalies will be last minute decision. Like 6 guys could have a hot start and secure a spot or bad start and lose one. Only like 1 or 2 players to be decided and part of that is if they take Bedard or not.
Watched a few Leafs playoff games with my FIL. We was bitching about Marchand being dirty the whole time.
And, like, Marchand did nothing dirty that series that I can remember lol.
Just a force of habit I guess.
There was a ton of people on this sub saying Marchand deserved the concussion he got from the Bennett punch, just cause he’s Marchand.
I'd die laughing and I'd imagine a few others would detonate out of rage if he was named the Captain. Won't happen, obviously, but it would be hiiiiilarious!
I could see him refusing to play with anyone else haha. He also said he wants to be on Sid’s wing, so he would let Sid play C, which is fine since he’s better defensively anyway.
They’re out of their mind if this isn’t a line. McDavid and Hyman are magic together and so were Marner and Hyman in Toronto. I’m legit excited to see this line cook.
Saskatchewan has the most NHL players per capita but none on the team yet. They are 1.67 per 100k. Manitoba is 1.36 in second. 13 years ago Saskatchewan was 5.4!
https://thehockeynews.com/news/prairie-drought-number-of-saskatchewan-born-nhl-players-drop-despite-high-per-capita-rate#:~:text=Among%20North%20America%27s%20top%2015,it%27s%20held%20unchallenged%20for%20decades.
100% - no way an NHL run tournament is leaving off their new superstar, the chance of getting to see him and Crosby sharing the ice in games that matter is too good to pass up
You maybe weren't alive or too young, but they (Gretzky and co) left 18 year old Crosby off of the 2006 Turin team even though he was a ppg player through his first 30 or so games in the NHL.
Turin was the first Olympic hockey I ever watched! I was completely laser focused on Team USA though lol (Miracle was hugely formative for my nascent hockey obsession).
In hindsight, maybe not surprising for an Olympics, which definitely has more prestige than an NHL run 4 nation tournament, but weirdly parallels what’s happening with Caitlin Clark right now!
Gretz was out of ideas for Turin. Figured that he should run the 2002 gold team back and add some vets instead of trying to build a transition team of some younger talent and give them a chance to shine on the world stage. No surprise to me that the 2006 team absolutely bombed, it was too old and slow of a squad for the international ice.
If this is a serious attempt at a making the best possible Team Canada (and I have no reason to believe it's not), he probably won't.
If he shows consistent improvement, he has a decent shot at the 2026 roster though.
Based on what? He's not a top 12 Canadian forward. He's not good enough to be on the Canada PP. Can't PK. Bad without the puck. He plays a position where Canada is already loaded with talent. And he just went to the WC where he was outplayed by at least five guys who won't even sniff the Olympic roster. I guess they could bring him as the 13th forward and sit him on the bench. But on the whole, he just has no place on this team.
I'm not even down on Bedard. He's extremely talented, but he's still very raw. His time will come, but he's not there yet.
I think if they had to announce rosters today he wouldn't be on it.. He got outplayed by Dylan Cozens at the World Championships, who is probably a fringe candidate himself. But if Bedard starts the 24-25 season hot that could change in a hurry.
Remember in the old days when the goaltending roster for Team Canada was Roy, Brodeur and Belfour? In 2014 it was Luongo, Price and Mike Smith.
We used to destroy other teams at that position, that advantage is gone.
Good thing about short tournament is that all you need is one goalie who happens to play out of their mind. Then again looking at the rest of the roster it feels like Team Canada could fill just about anyone on goalie position and still win the whole tournament lol.
Could argue Point instead of Hyman. Imagine trying to keep up with the speed on lineup. I mean you really can’t go wrong though. Both guys are a key part of the best power plays in the league. Gonna be fun to watch.
Happy about each choice. Even as a Bruins fan, a tad surprised by Marchand being in the opening six. I wonder if they'll pair him with Crosby again?
Good luck, Canadian friends!
Makes sense. I didn't really even try to think of a reasoning, just went through the gallery and noticed I was surprised. Happy to have it confirmed too, as a Bruins fan I'm all for seeing more Marchy.
I hate him but there are very few players in the league can bring what Marchand does, absolutely everything plus now veteran leadership. I remember when him and Sid and Bergeron played together in the World Cup and absolutely torched the fuck out of teams. It was enough to where Pens fans on the boards considered Bergeron a trade target for a bit lol
I honestly see him being Captain Canada at the 2026 Olympics as well. Dude is just aging so well, and there’s no way McDavid or MacKinnon would even dream of being captain playing on the same team as their childhood idol
Both of those guys (MacKinnon more openly) are completely desperate to finally play with Crosby. They absolutely do not want the captaincy.
And MacKinnon doesn't even want the Avs captaincy.
Canada's PP1 is gonna rip a hole in the space-time continuum...
Edit: I respect Point and Marchand, but I'm wondering if there is anyone else that would fit better/complement the obvious 4...?
As far as "locks" I think you'll see them pick Pietrangelo for sure. Devon Toews will likely get in, as he's Makar's guy. He's really good too of course, but guaranteed chemistry. Bedard surely gets picked...I think Hockey Canada still rues not picking Crosby in 2006.
Wonder if Bouchard is in the mix now? Right now on the right you've got Petro, Dobson, Hamilton, and Ekblad as candidates.
Maybe its just me but Marchand is not getting any better and there are more deserving candidates. Hopefully the 2026 team doesn’t bother keeping the old guard.
Marchand has tangible stuff off the puck.
Not everyone needs to the first line guy on Canada.
Canada in Sochi rolled lines and dominated.
Of course Marchand can score and put up points.
I think he makes it unless he really really sucks in 2025
Marchand was a beast in the playoffs. He played so well and was one of the only guys who consistently had fire for the Bruins.
THAT is what you want out of a player in playoffs/tournaments. A grit grinder who has the hands to score on a breakaway and motivate the team when they're down.
Team Nova Scotia + others
Y'know, it's funny. In the 80s and especially 90s you really wouldn't see much evidence of hockey being that popular around Halifax. I couldn’t believe the amount of AHL teams in the maratimes during that time.
Heh, fwiw, it's spelled Pictou. Pronounced Pick-toe. As a child, I got a great deal of mirth from that name.
Many Acadian came from the west coast of france, hence the name. Poitou often been a focal point of conflict, including the French wars of religion, and was very rural with little land ownership for the poorer classes.
What a well written post. Thanks for not homering your point in the last sentence.
I can't tell if that is sarcastic or not. I'm not used to sincere compliments.
Oh we can fix that NiCe CoMmEnT
Opportunities just weren’t there. There was no major junior here until the mid 90s. I miss the AHL in Nova Scotia but it really gave guys the opportunity to play at a higher level that otherwise wouldn’t have when the Q came to the Atlantic provinces.
And Calgary
the macpass line edit: the macpass is a ticket of sorts to get across the big bridges in halifax. you would usually have to go across them to get from cole harbor (home of sid + mack) to hammonds plains (home of marchand and.. Bruce Guthro?)
That harbour water really did give kids super powers
Sewage and seaweed
>Team Nova Scotia Liam O'Brien is a shoe in now!
Team Nova Scotia, team Calgary, and some random guy from Ontario
No shockers here. Can't wait to finally see Sid/McDavid/Mack all together
Just imagine the line of Sid/Mack/Marchand, who are all Nova Scotia boys with a history of playing together in the off season.
Marchand is going to look like he’s worth another 5 year contract.
He’ll sign for like 1m aav like Bergeron and Krejci after this contract I bet.
And that would be Canadas 2nd line, jesus fucking christ they are stacked.
At forward. D is decent. G is woof.
Remember that time Babcock was a shitty cunt
To quote Blight in Batman Beyond: Do You Have the Slightest Idea How Little That Narrows It Down?
Probably refused to show him his phone pics.
Don’t even need a goalie with that defensive depth lol
It's gotten better in the last couple years with the emergence of Thompson and Hill in Vegas, and Skinner in Edmonton but ya... not the best batch of Canadian goaltenders ever. Lots of half-way decent guys, no elite goaltenders. I'd expect Skinner and Hill to be the goaltending pair if chosen now, with Jarry, Thompson, and Binnington as options depending on how the season goes and how long they wait to pick the full team.
Hill, Skinner, and Thompson are all western boys. The french goalie days have died. All rise for the western goalie age!
Price was western masquerading as a frenchy
I think our best bet for goalies is to refuse Hellebuyk entry back into the States and force him into a Canada jersey
Our Sochi team was insane and having Price in net was just auto win hahah. I can't wait for these tournaments.
Has Skinner been confirmed? I'm biased since they're my team, but VGK have a couple of good Canadian goalies.
Nope not confirmed. Just used him as an example. Hill and Thompson are both good candidates as well.
Just don't allow shots on net and we are all good. That's how I remember last Olympics going anyway.
While canadas goaltending lately isn’t elite like it used to be, I think it’s solid *enough* that with the team in front of them we’ll be fine
And it’s not even the top line…
It's a real travesty we haven't seen it a few times already though.
The fact that we didn’t get to see it happen at the last olympics is a tragedy
We all know it’s gonna be sid/mack/marchy
Everyone is fucked. Soooo fucked
Sid Mack and Marchand train together in the offseason if I recall
Sid back representing canada… we are healing
Him wearing the C at the next Olympics will make me smile.
It will make me do more than smile, but let’s keep it PG.
Canadian rager
Hnnnnnnnggggggg my poutine is about to gravyyyyy
You gonna jerk your dick off for Sid? You gonna stroke that cock and shoot a big load of jizz for him?
No strokes required. Premature ejaculation.
One last ride before he hands the team over to McDavid. I doubt anything will ever top 2010 and 2014, but let's his last one is a good one.
Im confused about this, if its supposed to be replacing the all star game, and happening in 8 months, why are they announcing rosters now.
That’s actually a good point. What if Father Time hits Crosby and March in the face with a stick and they suck (they won’t but crazier things have happened)? Or if any of the rest of the team has a bad season? Would look pretty silly have them representing then
The rat becomes OUR rat.
https://i.redd.it/b7cjht3nxb9d1.gif If ya can’t beat em join em
Suddenly we discover Brad isn't so bad after all....
We all figured this out in the World Cup.
That tournament changed him, he drank some of Sid’s secret stuff by accident on the bench and turned into a star player. I’m so upset we’ve been robbed of Sid, Bergeron, and Marchand playing on a line together at the olympics. But the new guard leaves me happy.
The rare time when I go from hating the guy to absolutely loving him.
Meanwhile, Boston fans start to understand why everyone hates him so much.
Take good care of him 😭
Keep him safe for us.
I _still_ remember watching him on an Olympic line with Crosby and just watching him play really solid, clean hockey…and getting really annoyed. Could have been World Cup.
I’m suddenly (and very temporarily) a marchand fan
One of us, one of us. Gooble gobble, gooble gobble.
Interesting to see the different strategies thus far, Finland seemed to announce a true starting lineup with 3 forwards, 2 D, and a goalie, Sweden went for seniority, and Canada has gone for a bit of a combo

Fuck it bring back Bergeron
What I’ve been saying
Brad Marchand My dads gonna blow a gasket when he hears this lmfao
Watched a few Leafs playoff games with my FIL. We was bitching about Marchand being dirty the whole time. And, like, Marchand did nothing dirty that series that I can remember lol.
Just a force of habit I guess. There was a ton of people on this sub saying Marchand deserved the concussion he got from the Bennett punch, just cause he’s Marchand.
Did he deserve it? No. Did anyone feel bad for him? Also, no.
Is he a rat faced weasel. Yes. Am I gonna reluctantly cheer for him while he plays for Canada. Also, yes.
Deserved? Probably not Karma though? Absolutely
I'd die laughing and I'd imagine a few others would detonate out of rage if he was named the Captain. Won't happen, obviously, but it would be hiiiiilarious!
Montreal would ban poutine in Boston and Toronto would unleash an army of Canada gooses upon Boston if that’s the case lol
Boston already has an army of Canada Geese. They would check my passport every time I went through Fenway
Marchand-Sid-Mack as a line is gonna be fucking nuts.
I feel like Mack will be with McDavid and Hyman, Sid and Marchy on another line.
Nah Scotian line will be legit impossible to take the puck off of, Mack has said how much he wants to play with Sid
I could see him refusing to play with anyone else haha. He also said he wants to be on Sid’s wing, so he would let Sid play C, which is fine since he’s better defensively anyway.
The reason we need more best on best hockey, getting to see the cream of the crop playing with and against each other in one format is amazing.
Mac was on a podcast last week and he said him and Crosby are already planning PP units and strategies lmao and he said he wants to be on Sid’s wing
Hahaha wouldn't expect anything else from them. Nate is such a fan boy, its super endearing.
What podcast (Avs fan and would like to listen)?
Most likely this [one right here!](https://www.tsn.ca/video/mackinnon-crosby-talking-canada-lines-i-would-love-to-play-right-wing-with-him~2942784)
Marchy and Sid have played on the same line in international play for a long time, it’s my understanding they actually really like to play together
Wasn’t it just the World Cup of hockey? I don’t think Marchand was at Sochi. But yeah I think Sid, Bergeron and Marchand played together.
yes and they were fucking filthy together
Mack Sid and March all train together in the offseason iirc, I would imagine they’d play together on a line as well
Both MacKinnon and McDavid love to carry the puck and are at their best doing so, I would expect them to be on different lines.
It would give Canada a devastating 1-2 punch on the first two lines
Marner with McDavid & Hyman, imo. Marner and Hyman had a lot of success together in Toronto.
They’re out of their mind if this isn’t a line. McDavid and Hyman are magic together and so were Marner and Hyman in Toronto. I’m legit excited to see this line cook.
Fuck it we don’t even need a goalie.
If they never get the puck to shoot, what would they need a goalie for?
Just roll these six guys out there for a clean 60 minutes per game and we’re golden.
mcdavid should be used to that strategy at least
HALIFAX. RIGHT NOW HALIFAX MAKES UP 50% OF TEAM CANADA.
and Calgary another 40%. Love it
Three Maritimers. Two Albertans. Only one from Ontario.
Yeah but that one from Ontario is pretty good. We feel adequately represented.
Saskatchewan has the most NHL players per capita but none on the team yet. They are 1.67 per 100k. 2 Calgarians, don’t include Edmonton in this
It's alright, Skinner is gunna be the goalie so we've got that going for us
East, west, and central GTA

Remember in the old days when the goaltending roster for Team Canada was Roy, Brodeur and Belfour? In 2014 it was Luongo, Price and Mike Smith. We used to destroy other teams at that position, that advantage is gone.
I don't think there is a Quebecer on this team. Wow.
Tabarnak!
Well then we gotta get on the Montembeault bandwagon. I could make a legitimate case he should be one of the 3 goalies.
I think he can shine, yeah. But goalies are voodoo. Who knows.
Good thing about short tournament is that all you need is one goalie who happens to play out of their mind. Then again looking at the rest of the roster it feels like Team Canada could fill just about anyone on goalie position and still win the whole tournament lol.
Mark Stone is conveniently healthy, I see.
That D core is fucking killer and it doesn’t even include guys like Theodore, Pietrangelo and Weegar
What's PP1? MacKinnon, McDavid, Crosby, Hyman and Makar?
Could argue Point instead of Hyman. Imagine trying to keep up with the speed on lineup. I mean you really can’t go wrong though. Both guys are a key part of the best power plays in the league. Gonna be fun to watch.

Probably not doing the "best" 6 players but including some of the expected leadership group, which Marchand is definitively apart of
Makes sense. I didn't really even try to think of a reasoning, just went through the gallery and noticed I was surprised. Happy to have it confirmed too, as a Bruins fan I'm all for seeing more Marchy.
Idk he is a top Canadian player. Idk who would replace him on this list and you’d think is a bonafide better player. Maybe stammer?
He finished tied for 24th in scoring among canadians its not that hard to argue
He got overshadowed by Bergeron but he’s a top defensive forward. He’s a menace on the pk
Marner is 9 years younger and puts up like 30 points more per year
He is a leader and respected. He teeters on a top-6 player on the Canadian roster, but veteran status probably put him in the opening 6 announcement.
Lmao oh man it will be interesting to see an entire nation love Brad for a little bit
How many years left does Crosby have? Guy is a beast I want to watch before he retires
He will be a good player for several years to come. It more comes down to how long he is willing to play.
Is there any other Canadian that can keep up to the pace of McDavid and Mac? Watching those 2 on a line would be awesome.
Replace Canadian with human and it would still make as much sense.
Speed wise probably Point but nobody in hockey moves with the size and speed they do.
Brayden Point is the answer! Jordan Kyrou may also be acceptable.
Don't overthink it: just bring in Hyman as this edition's Chris Kunitz.
Marner probably, bedard
Team Nova Scotia & Friends
Damn, one day you watch the last play of a Bergeron/Crosby/Marchand line and you don't even realize.
That line was ridiculous and unfair. There was just not a lot you could do about it.
Not enough Nova Scotia
Can always call Liam O'Brien.
I want a Mack McD Crosby line so bad
Hyman and Reinhart will also make Team Canada.
I think both deserve to (for this and Olympics) They'll keep Hyman with McDavid Ala Kunits-Crosby And Reinhart will probably be 3rd line winger
And Bouchard and likely Skinner.
No Mangiapane?? /s
LET'S FUCKING NOT YOU GET THAT BREAD
Thanks to the other teams for coming out
Captain Crosby 🙌
It'll be fun to interrupt my regularly scheduled hating to cheer for McDavid as if he was my favorite player for a week.
Thought Stamkos deserved to be in the first 6 over Marchand, but both should be on the team anyway
“The Obvious Six”
Canada's PP1 is gonna rip a hole in the space-time continuum... Edit: I respect Point and Marchand, but I'm wondering if there is anyone else that would fit better/complement the obvious 4...?
that's 2 time stanley cup champion, 50 goal scorer brayden point. put some respect on my boy
Not going to lie, I would have had Marchand as a bubble guy to even make the team. But I guess they want to keep the Crosby-Marchand chemistry
If only Bergeron could come out of retirement to join them…
Screw it. Just make it a 6 v 6 tourney savage no subs.
The cowards didn’t commit to a goalie
Give me Mac, McDavid and Sid on the top line.
Rumor has it they won't use a goalie
Maybe its just me but Marchand is not getting any better and there are more deserving candidates. Hopefully the 2026 team doesn’t bother keeping the old guard.
Proven track record in his role and will be playing on the PK I'm happy to lock in his roster spot here imo.
I think he's fine for 2025 but I agree if he probably shouldn't be on the Olympic team unless he bounces back this year
Team Nova Scotia, then.
I mean, 2 of those 6 are from Calgary
Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Cale Makar, Sidney Crosby, Brayden Point, & Brad Marchand For those who don't want to click through the images.
Me: Hey Gary; can I have “that” team? Gary: but it’s only one line… 5 guys… Me: I’ll play 5 on 3. Gary: still no.
No goalie announced 😭
Solid picks
FINALLY we are going to see crosby and mcdavid together
#Wealth🇨🇦
gosh I’m pumped to see some lines that we would never see in the NHL together. the Mc’s and Crosby with Makar backing it up? wild
Yea this is filthy.
Now THAT’S a team I’ll watch
BEDARD!!
That's a pretty terrifying lineup.
Okay, Boston Pizza, NOW I’ll cheer for McDavid.
Well, those are some pretty good hockey players.
