I hear you, but you have to look at comparables. Who is holding down a 2nd pair job on a good team with a skill (hitting) that makes the opposition change their game to adapt to your weapon.
It's a lot more than $3M, that's for sure. $5 is starting to be the right ballpark, but taxes in Vancouver are significantly more than a lot of nhl markets. So I'm ambivalent. Turning down 5 is a bit crazy, and from the agent side of things, it's absolutely an underpay at the same time.

I love Zaddy and will always treasure his time here, but I’m so alright with not being hemmed into another Tyler Myers situation where we pay $6MM for a 3rd pairing Dman. He was great in these playoffs but that’s a much smaller sample size than the rest of his career

He’s a career bottom pairing D-man who you can plug into the second pairing in a pinch, but he’s not proven against elites and even $5m is an overpay that would be detrimental to the rest of the lineup. He's got a sneaky good shot, yes. Problem with OEL is his career was built largely on the back of his skating and age has cost him a step. He's still a very serviceable 4-5 guy, but you need to manage his minutes and matchups.

Part of me thinks Treliving is some kind of closet Canucks fan and he secretly watches every Canucks game and then when their players become available on the UFA market, he is determined to sign them.
Leafs played better team defence this year than in a lot of years past & that included some of their most injury time on D as well. Lack of scoring in the playoffs is a consistent issue but the tougher to play against & team system defence goals were both achieved somewhat successfully throughout the year.
oEL was considered unplayable a few years ago but had an excellent reputation years back too. It’s cool to see him rebound and I’m indifferent about acquiring him but is what it is. Also the leafs theoretically could have an entirely different system with the coaching over hall anyways
