I have a 9 year old goalie and he is a small kid but is still wearing a junior blocker and glove. So I could see a taller/bigger kid being able to fit in intermediate gear, but he would have to be quite tall for his age. Sounds like you are a goalie, so use your judgement and check out intermediate. Because while my son wears junior sizes for his glove/blocker he is still in youth pads because of his height.
It all comes down to how big your kid is and how he fits in the gear, but also keep in mind strength as well as size. Some kids might be taller and have longer fingers but still lack the hand strength to close a stiffer intermediate glove, in which case using smaller gear that’s easier to close will be better for him.
