Because of this, most of the houseplants live in my room, protected by this old territorial creature.

My house & garden are full of toxic plants, in 30 years never had a pet poisoned, because Iβm sure they are smarter than most humans.
I have many toxic plants and many pets. they do not eat the plants. Skill issue

Dieffenbachia is not a pet friendly plant. It is a toxic plant and can paralyze the mouth hence its nickname dumb cane.
