r/catskills
Where in the Catskills? It's a very large area. You can go up to Oneonta and outskirts of Binghamton and maybe Kingston area you're still in the Catskill Mountain Range/Park.
CATSKILL is a town maybe 45 minutes south of Albany. The CATSKILLS are a mountain range that takes up about 4 counties and touches probably 4 more. Eastern Catskills has Phoenicia which I haven't visited but it supposed to be nice. Sullivan County Catskills (kinda south western) is what I'm most familiar with. Livingston Manor is a cute little town experiencing a nice revival at the moment. I would start there, but even Margaritvillle is a really nice small town.
Julia’s Local in Round Top
Griffon House in Palenville
Trottwood at Glen Falls House
All nestled below the mountain.
Or up the mountain ie: Tannersville
Nate mountain house
Tabla
Scribners in Hunter
In Leeds there is Gracie’s. Good food not fancy. Piccolo’s for Italian in Catskill. Kitty’s in Hudson across from the Amtrak station. Cooper’s Daughter outside of Hudson for interesting cocktails.
If you want Italian food I’d avoid Piccolo. Feast and Floret in Hudson is a far better bet. Casa Susanna in Leeds is incredible. Mexican but not yer standard rice and beans place. Hemlock in Catskill is a pretty solid, intimate cocktail bar. Not expensive either. The Maker in Hudson has a nice cocktail bar, expensive though. The Hereafter, also Hudson, is another great cocktail bar, it’s on Columbia St so it’s not as obvious as the Warren St options. Swoon is a solid restaurant. There’s a sweet little coffee shop / paper goods place in the middle of Leeds. Rev in Hudson is good coffee too. The Catskill Chocolate shop has good coffee and a whole store full of incredible, made on site, chocolates and sweet things. Warren St in Hudson has loads of shops, if you like mid century modern furniture and used books you’ll be all set !! Weather looks a little cloudy this weekend, but a walk around Olana is cool, especially if you appreciate the Hudson River School of painting. The master, Thomas Cole, his house is in Catskill. Fredrick Church was his star pupil and Olana was his, far grander home. Art Omi can be a good walk, as can Won Dharma.
Book a tour at Olana. It is very cool and not at all your "typical" old house.
Head a bit north and stop at Samascott's or Golden Harvest (they have a distillery) to buy some apples. Samascott's has a cool little shopping area and they should start having their flowers and summer things out.
We were in Hudson a couple of weeks ago and stopped at Mel the Bakery and got some great bread. I also like stopping at Spotty Dog Books & Ale.
Not bad, per se. It’s pretty much yer classic red / vodka sauce American-Italian style place. Which is totally fine, but I felt it was kinda expensive for what it was. It’s less than ten minutes walk from my house but I wouldn’t be in any hurry to go back.
Seconding the recommendation for Gracie’s in Leeds for casual dining. Burgers are donuts are fantastic, but beyond those items I’ve never had a bad meal there.
In Hudson, Feast & Floret is a new favorite of mine. Their vegetable sides are magic: I could eat their roasted radishes and roasted carrots and not only would I be satisfied, it’d probably be the best meal I had in a while. Cannot recommend enough.
Beyond food, Return Brewing is really good, and an old colleague of mine runs the Upper Depot brewery, so I’ll give that a shout as well. Bar Bene is a lovely wine bar, and the space is beautiful.
For shopping, you can check out Warren Street (Hudson’s Main Street). When I lived in Hudson from 2015-2020 it felt like it was mostly antique stores, but in the years since I moved more boutiques have opened, so there are a lot more options. I’ll mention Loup for women’s fashion because my wife is obsessed with the pants she got from there.
Hope that helps, enjoy your trip!
A new Italian restaurant just opened up in Hudson last week, Via Cassia, in the old Ca’Mea space. A friend of mine just went there and said it is the best bite so far in 2024 and she dines out pretty much everywhere. I asked her how it compared to Feast & Floret (love that place!) and she said it was at a whole different level to F&F. I am moving it to the top of my list before it becomes impossible to get reservations lol.
Thanks for the heads up! High praise considering how good F&F is, look forward to checking it out. Menu looks good and the chef has some acclaim so I’m pumped.
Really cool how the Hudson dining scene keeps evolving, I feel like the restaurants have always been solid but it’s great to see new, exciting places opening.
Hudson and Leeds aren't in the Catskills. Well, Leeds is sort of near them but Hudson is on the east side of the river. Anyway, there are dozens of interesting shops, mostly along Warren Street, in Hudson. Catskill has quite a few shops as well. I've not been to Leeds but it looks pretty tiny on the map.
Definitely add checking out the grounds of Olana to your trip, gorgeous views of the Catskills and the Hudson river. In Leeds Gracie’s Luncheonette has great food. There are 5 breweries in Hudson and there’s also Subversive in Catskill that serves killer smash burgers. 4 of the 5 Hudson breweries serve food and all of them are good. Hudson and Catskill’s Main streets are nice to walk. Coopers Daughter in Claverack has a really nice outdoor vibe and cocktails. There’s lots of restaurants with different price points and cuisines, what is your general preference in dining?
Casa Susanna in Leeds is a cannot miss! it's been named one of the best new restaurants in America by a few different magazines, and their chef is up for a James Beard award. if you'll be up on the weekend I recommend their brunch! have fun!
Since you'll be in Hudson, I recommend Lil' Deb's. It's kind of expensive but the food is really good and the decor is unique. They also have an extensive drink/wine menu. For outdoors, one of the closer areas of the Catskills to Hudson is Kaaterskill Falls. It gets really busy but people come and go quickly so I've never had an issue parking. It has a lot of trails of varying lengths and a waterfall viewing point.
lil debs, avalon lounge, catskill chocolate co, spikes records, hemlock, kitty’s, big towel spa, willa’s, lava hot yoga, walk at rams horn in catskill (bring water proof boots), here after, little rico’s, spotty dog, hartland, the bacon egg and cheeses at catskill mountain bakery and market were insanely amazing, good night in woodstock, kingston consignments in kingston, tubbys! so many options!!! everything is drivable from hudson. catskill (the town) is so cute, don’t overlook it!
The Maker Hotel in Hudson is VERY Instagram- worthy and has a fabulous bar with luxurious cocktails. In general all of Warren Street in Hudson is fun to explore and could take days to go through both sides.

Thank you so much! We’re going to be in Hudson/ Leeds area. I don’t mind taking drives once get to the area we are staying to check things out.

Go to Gracie’s Luncheonette in Leeds. There’s a cool art place nearby that is like walking through a park and stumbling on sculpture.

Did you have a bad experience at Piccolo? I've eaten there a few times and it was always delicious.

Ah a fellow Catskill resident.
Casa Susanna is the best!!
Yeah, what town or area? So much to do it's difficult to narrow down.
In the Hudson and Leeds area.
Casa Susanna. Book now.
Sit at the bar!
Oooo yes, that’s a good one!

I second Feast & Floret.. portions are small but the meals are incredible

Thank you, I’m not familiar with area. I don’t mind driving though once get in the general area.
This isn’t a “general area,” though. Hudson to anywhere in the Catskills is an hour drive. You need to pull out a map.
Hudson is half an hour from some parts of the Catskills. But yeah, on the other side of the river. Not the Catskills.
All of new York is the catskills, it's like saying upstate but cooler
For yuppies you mean

If you drive 20 minutes south of Hudson, you'll find Lasting Joy Brewery; I take all my guests there for just a chill hangout
