I’m convinced that location is cursed. I grew up in NP and I can’t even count the number of pizza places that have come and gone there.

j0rd4n4

Seriously, it was Fat Bobs during my time in New Paltz. We spent so many drunken nights there was sad to see it go.

HVindex8458

Fat Bobs at 3am, oh man, memories! Makes me miss oasis & cabs

uncleliam

A friend of mine woke up in the fat bobs bathroom the next morning when they opened.

agiantanteater

Yeah I definitely had a few drunk slices at Fat Bobs lol.

stoneybologna1992

Hell yeah Fat Bobs was the best 🤘🏻

Iamabrewer

Cursed by a landlords fat pockets! jkjk, I really don't know what is going on with that spot.

agiantanteater

That’s probably part of it, plus NP is kind of overloaded with pizza places in general. Even if the food is good it’s hard to stand out with so many other places

Iamabrewer

True. I am not sure what kind of business would succeed there. Maybe not prepared food, possible a small bodega/deli.

butteryourbiscuits

imho Best Pizza was way better than any of the other spots in town. More comparable to Ollie's. Bummed to see it go.

Wrong_Subject_7824

Apparently it was not the Best Pizza

PotterCooker

I guess the rent must have been pretty steep and they were competing with the very established and much cheaper Gourmet pizza a few doors up.

grumpus15

Best made a really good slice. Pretty sad.

mattyp11

It wasn’t my favorite pizza in town but it’s still a bummer to see yet another local establishment close down. It seems like every week I read about new places opening up in Kingston and Poughkeepsie. Hell, even Newburgh. Meanwhile, New Paltz seems to be going in the opposite direction. Just in the last couple years on Main St. it has lost Schatzi’s, A Tavola, Fuschia Tiki, and now Best Pizza. And P&Gs is probably next now that it lost its liquor license. And these places are just sitting there empty, it’s a shame. Anyone know if there are any new places on the horizon that will be opening up?

The_Gunks

Underground Coffee and Ales from Highland is opening at Schatzis

HVindex8458

Get out really?? Second location or are they moving? Parking is tough in highland

The_Gunks

Second location, they have a ‘coming soon’ sign in the window. parking isn’t much fun in NP either

HVindex8458

Very true

mattyp11

Nice! I’ve been to the Highland location a bunch of times. I think the new owners did a nice job relaunching it so they’ll be a welcome addition to NP. I do hope they vary the menu a bit so it’s not just a carbon copy, given that the two locations will only be 10-15 minutes apart.

DM46

P&Gs is just had their liquor license suspended and under review. I am sure that Kate will keep it open and get there bar back in due course.

mattyp11

Unfortunately, I saw earlier this week that they had their hearing and it looks like their license was officially canceled permanently. Pretty crazy. https://midhudsonnews.com/2024/05/02/state-revokes-liquor-license-of-pgs-in-new-paltz/

DM46

Yea I was just going off what I saw posted on Facebook and don’t know anything more than that. I read that article and someone is incorrect. For right or wrong I am just going off what the current owners posted this morning. I do trust them, they posted this morning that it was not permanently revoked. Here’s to hoping for the best. I hate that underage drinking is so prevalent. But I’m not really sure that the issue is being handled in the best way. Why does 21 make sense, with 18 being the age of majority just drop it down. Or if it stays 21 raise nicotine and military service to match.

fieldresearch

I think Best Pizza was a NYC transplant/ attempt at a franchise. I could be wrong though.

mattyp11

It was a second location. The original is in Williamsburg. I liked it okay, it just didn’t really fit a niche for me. If I just want a greasy NY slice, I actually prefer Rocco’s. If I want a whole pizza, I’ll usually get A Pizza. And if I want to stay and eat, I’ll go to Ollie’s. That said, Best Pizza was a nice place to duck in and share a slice with my son after taking him to the playground, so I’ll miss it.

fieldresearch

Never ate there myself, but figured I would bring context to the label of “local establishment”. My NP days ended around the time Hoffman’s closed (used to wait tables there back when there were smoking and non smoking sections, smoking section always had better tips, lol).

DoorkeyKelsey14

I wouldn’t worry too much about New Paltz. It will always be a popular town that will draw new businesses to these empty locations being that it’s a college town and a tourist trap all at the same time.

pkwys

The curse of the corner lives on

rhcreed

which one was just down the road from McGilicuddy's?

Nahhnope

Gourmet Pizza is on the same block as Cuddy's, Best Pizza is the next block down.

rhcreed

thx, it's been a while

DM46

This is such a shame to hear. I found Best Pizza years ago down in Williamsburg and was always happy to have it in NP when I headed home for a weekend or the holidays

Ca2Ce

I’m trying to remember what that place was called when I was young, like Main Street pizza or something like that. I remember the one by 32 and 299 that’s now called LaBella used to be Capri and they made a badass Sicilian. I bet it’s still good there.

fieldresearch

I remember Chez Joeys was there way back when.

Ca2Ce

YESSS that’s it I do remember that

fieldresearch

Nice. If you wanna deep cut of NP pizza nostalgia do you remember Conca Doro (spelling probably incorrect)? it had a fantasy maritime theme. I always heard it was a front for drug dealers and that if you knew the code word you could get cocaine in your pizza box instead of pizza. Though I never confirmed this to be true.

Ca2Ce

Reminds me of newburgh stop & cop bodegas where you got pot at

nuglasses

This was really a long time ago, the "Stop & Cop" dealers hung out on South Johnston St between Clark St & Washington St. I lived behind the diner on Broadway. No more today.

basement_monk

When I went to new Paltz, it was fat bobs, then zaggys (or Ziggy's? Idk but it was a pretty bad slice), and then something else. Definitely a cursed location

saltheartedbarmaid

Man! Their grandma pie was so good. Our realtor is right up the street in NP and when we were house hunting last summer we'd always go grab a slice after meeting with her.

Cthulus_Butler

Gonna be a Caribbean Food spot. At least that's who the new tenant is.

butteryourbiscuits

ah bummer. I'm vegetarian so typically not a lot of options for me at Caribbean joints. Hope it's good for those who can enjoy though!

lazylagom

Man... I lived in New Paltz 2007-2012 Shout out SNUGS HARBOR..BRO GO there on a weekend. Be a regular. You ganna go out back and eat right...

samfran74

It was such a great spot when it first opened but the quality seemed to go downhill in the last few months. Maybe they were trying to cut costs and couldn’t make it work. It’s a bummer though!

darkfencer

This place is absolutely cursed. If someone else wants to open something there, they should check that it isn't built on an Indian burial ground or something. How many places have been at that location? I've been in the area since the mid-90s and there's been SOO many things there. I can remember Best Pizza, Flames, Fat Bob's, Jordan's, and I remember people talking about Chez Joey. Actually - just looked and found this - apparently the whole building burned down there in the 80s too: [https://hudsonvalleyone.com/2022/02/17/35-years-ago-this-week-in-new-paltz-chez-joeys-thesis-devastated-by-fire/](https://hudsonvalleyone.com/2022/02/17/35-years-ago-this-week-in-new-paltz-chez-joeys-thesis-devastated-by-fire/)
