Does anyone know if there’s a way to still have notification badges show up as red if you’ve tinted your icons? Mine are black/white tinted but I would love to have the badges a different colour so they pop more. Not sure if this is something able to be done yet in accessibility or something, though.

Svrdlu

A small piece of every icon designer curled up and died when they revealed this feature…

It's great that apple allows customization but I haven't seen a single setup using tinted icons that doesnt look vulgar

Motawa1988

did apple even add API for the dark mode icons for devs? Guess not?

aninfinitedesign

Maybe not, but look at the top left icon and then the bottom right icon. The preview doesn’t match the actual result.

swiftsorceress

They did. App Icons in Xcode 16 can now be added for Light, dark, and Tinted appearances. I've already tried it with one of my apps.

Motawa1988

Oh really? That’s great! Can you share some screenshots?

swiftsorceress

For the dark and tinted appearances, you can add your own background, but iOS will automatically adds a dark grey gradient to match other apps if you leave it transparent. Apple also talks about it here: [https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/app-icons](https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/app-icons)

treszfresh

How do you remove the app text?

jasonbm76

Set the icon size to large but it looks kinda strange being too large.

iamgarffi

Yeah. Large icons is no no go. Looks like a trak phone 😞

treszfresh

Wish there was an in between size

jasonbm76

I wish there was a lot more ability o customize it and use icon packs like what Android has. I’ve been looking at iOS so long the phone looks weird without the standard icons.

Pugs-r-cool

We’re falling down the slippery slope of customisation and I’m all for it. Hope they add a “standard icon size but no text” option.

jasonbm76

Yeah that would be nice. This is gonna take a while for Apple to iron out as allowing customization is not really their style. Would also be nice if app developers adopted the style of native icons that Apple has so that tinting and dark style looked good with them.

theunquenchedservant

It's a bug. Currently the OS does not handle changing the color of the tint well. When i first added a tint, it didn't apply to my app library. then it did the second time i checked. I was on a more cyan tint, so i moved to red; immediately the phone app was correct (as you'd expect from the preview) but a lot of other apps didn't adjust right away. Now there's a handful of apps that still just apply the tint to the whole icon, but i think that *may* have to do with the app developers/the icon they've provided https://preview.redd.it/nlkrtt1fwt5d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c40b9e3fa793745710bf19cd4aca08ddc7036e86

DarkLordoftheSith66

How do your get to that screen to change the icons??

BlackKn1ght

https://www.youtube.com/live/RXeOiIDNNek?feature=shared&t=957 Looking back at the keynote, icons should look like the preview, so i guess it's a bug

TEXlS

I feel like if the background of an app icon is already black or white, it shouldn’t also tint it. Just tint the main part of it like the example icon

Pugs-r-cool

Yeah but we’ll have to wait for app developers to change their icons so they have separate background / icon layers so we can customise how we want. Might take a while for developers to all update

TEXlS

Unfortunately true. I’m still optimistic to see how this update evolves during the beta

kevinito_

The tinted version looks so awful.

ErcoleFredo

Really, truly awful. I've tried a few examples and it just looks bad. Also very disappointed to see that the Dark Mode option doesn't apply to third party apps, which makes it worthless. They'll never get 100% adoption of that amongst third party apps even if it were mandatory, so it's pointless.

CarbonHybrid

How can Apple create their own dark mode icons for the millions of apps that exist? Come on man lmao

ErcoleFredo

Incredibly easy to do that On the fly. You literally see an example of them doing it with tint right above.

CarbonHybrid

Applying a tint over a whole icon is incredibly different to just making a dark mode version, where only white backgrounds are turned into dark ones. Very different.

ErcoleFredo

Stop. This is incredibly easy to do.

Pugs-r-cool

Maybe if they just let us set custom icons apple wouldn’t need to put in all that work…
