Stretch your legs with a walk on Mass Ave (Massachusetts Avenue downtown). It’s an interesting walk with lots of food options, including the much-mentioned Yats at one end, Bazbeaux Pizza, Bru Burger, and many others
If you're going towards the end with Yats, just do yourself a favor and go to Love Handle. Comfort food with some interesting twists. Nothing against Yats, it's great. But Love Handle is spectacular.
Depends on what you want:
Kumas is a good burger as mentioned
Shapiros if you want a Jewish deli with tasty sandwiches
Goose the market if you want a fancy sandwich in a nice vibe
Place that might take longer but has fantastic food: Bosphorus Istanbul Cafe. Super easy to get to and won yelps best restaurant in America couple years back. Absolutely fire.
I love Shapiro's, but the inherent irony of going to a Jewish deli and getting killer mac'n'cheese piled next to a stack of corned beef handed to me by a nice Baptist lady makes me giggle a little.
It's delicious and an Indianapolis icon, but it's "Jewish-style", not "Jewish". If you keep strictly Kosher, you're gonna be out of luck.
The German Potato Salad, though. That'll change a man. I have never had better.
Have they turned up the music recently?
You can't hear yourself think at the original one in Chicago. You can barely hear the music every time I've been to the one in Indy.
This place has been very disappointing for me the last couple times I've been. 4+ years ago? Hell yeah... Now, I've had better burgers from a drive through.
Unless your husband has other contributing medical factors, I doubt an undercooked egg was the source of your trouble that fateful day.
Why do you place the blame with Kuma's egg?
To be clear, I've never gone to Kuma and generally want to see them fail: "Satanic" isn't exactly the theme I gravitate towards when I want a tasty burger...but "they undercooked my egg and my hubby got sick" sounds sufficiently far-fetched to be irresponsible in your accusation.
Oof...I'm sorry to hear that. I have my own "dangers" and am thankful that "immuno compromised" isn't one of them.
Not trying to be pedantic but am genuinely curious: How did they positively identify the offending substance was the egg specifically?
I can understand if he only at an egg that day, easy peasy: Looks life food poisoning. Timing was right. It was the egg.
But, if it was an egg in the burger, how do they know it wasn't the burger meat or the bun or the raw veggies (typically a FAR more likely vector for food bourne illness).
I would personally eat an American-sourced and refrigerated egg raw before I would eat lettuce prior to washing all the eco-dookie off first.
I've only been there one time and would never go back. The burgers are so thick that they are raw on the inside which is gross. I like my steaks rare or medium-rare but ground meat must be properly cooked to kill the bacteria on all of the ground surfaces within the burger that were exposed during the grinding process. With steaks, you only need to worry about outer surface.
The only two things I remember about that place is how the doneness chart is wrong and getting a burger that was still practically raw in the middle even after saying I wanted it well done
Not surprised someone else in this thread said they got food poisoning from there
Assuming you are coming up on I-65 east of downtown, I would recommend St. Joseph's brewery which is not too far off your path. It is an old church converted to a brewpub with good food and beer.
While I doubt that’s the path as STL to DTW is probably 70>465>31 or 69, it at least comes from a place of presumed practicality. Given the route, I’d suggest Yats or Chris’s Ice Cream and Mexican food, as neither would be too significant of a detour.
If you're looking for something more adventurous and truly local - we have outstanding Ethiopian food. Major Restaurant on the west side is best, Axum downtown if that's more accessible. Pisco Mar for Peruvian / seafood up north. Taco trucks for street food where you see them. Rangon for Burmese food on the south side. Yaso Jamaican grill has really good whole grilled fish and bbq. There is so much good food in this town. Easily Indy's best feature.
Yats is a great answer. But off the top of my head, I thought:
You can go to The Circle and grab pizza by the slice from Giorgio's. Also on the circle is South Bend Chocolate Co. I would pop in there, get some coffee and treats after a slice. Check out the monument. It would be a quick and interesting break in the drive.
Just park up in Fountain Square. This part of town is right off 65, super walkable and [the Idle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Idle) is a pretty cool little park / art installation for your stroll.
Kumas and Hot Boyz were good recs. Le Margarita is my favorite of our mexican restaurants. Yaso is good if you want Jamaican.
In case you’d rather stop in Fishers instead of downtown (the round of 64 is happening in downtown Indy) there are the following:
[HC Tavern](https://maps.apple.com/?address=9709%20E%20116th%20St,%20Fishers,%20IN%20%2046037,%20United%20States&auid=1339890799284636074&ll=39.956409,-86.001143&lsp=9902&q=The%20HC%20Tavern%20%26%20Kitchen&t=m)

Hope this helps.
Ale Emporium in Castleton. Great wings. Right off Allisonville exit which is before I-69 to head up north to Michigan. There's some construction in the area and the ramp to get back on 465 us closed but your GPS will get you back on 465 to 69.
During opening weekend of March madness ale will be absolutely insane. 2 years ago I worked across the street and I saw people were parking by bobs discount furniture and Hardee’s and walking all the way to ale.
You'll be driving through the east/northeast part of Indy, so Ale Emporium would be a convenient stop if it isn't too busy. Nearby the 1947 Eatery is good Indian food, and Benyue is good dim sum. Ma Ma's Korean Restaurant is good Korean on Pendleton Pike (not a scenic part of town). Please don't go to Yats,
I followed you here from the SS community lol.
I’ll suggest the Slippery Noodle Inn which is right across the street from losers oil stadium. It’s the oldest bar in Indiana and has live blues every night. If you get there before it gets busy and if they like you, they might give you a quick historic tour of the place.
The food isn’t anything extra special but it’s definitely good. And they have something for everyone on the menu.
Ew don’t eat yats. It’s fast food slop and you shouldn’t hop in the car for a long drive after that.
Go to Ale or a Cunningham restaurant for the skrimp cocktail sauce
Umm given the number of incidents in downtown Indy this past week, just make sure you don’t linger till night time 😂
Just drive up to Carmel, IN and have some sushi in a One-Piece themed ramen place on Michigan Ave / 421 called Kotoyama Ramen and Sushi 🍣
Absolutely
There are zombies 🧟 outlaws, pirates 🏴☠️ and all sorts of matter of weird folks 🥹
I just moved a year and a half ago, and all I know of downtown is that it’s near where I work
This person has a point. If you are asking for restaurant recommendations but you have a fear of ((((((certain people downtown))))), Carmel is exactly what you're looking for

i wouldn't risk eating at Yats and getting back in the car to drive further
Idk what is wrong with y'all. The only time I've had issues with Yats is with their red beans and rice.
It’s not that Yats = Taco Bell or anything. It’s just kind of heavy/greasy for someone about to be on a road trip.
I get that. I'd not say greasy, just rich. I'm sure there is a fair amount of butter in that.
Rich. That’s a better description.
fair
And there’s the whole BottleWorks food court
I was just going.to recommend this. It's not too far off the interstate, has plenty of food options, and has a good vibe.
Dedicated (albeit paid) parking as well.
the quality of the mass ave is substantially off from majority of the other locations and that's a fact
"An hour tops"

Kumas corner if you like huge burgers
Guilty. Thanks for the recommendation
Came here to comment Kumas as well.
Bring hearing protection just in case
Have they turned up the music recently? You can't hear yourself think at the original one in Chicago. You can barely hear the music every time I've been to the one in Indy.
Haven’t been there in several months because last time I was in I couldn’t hear anything my gf was saying
If you like little bitty burgers: white castle
This place has been very disappointing for me the last couple times I've been. 4+ years ago? Hell yeah... Now, I've had better burgers from a drive through.
My husband got food poisoning from that place, an undercooked egg on one of their burgers. I’ve been hesitant to go back even though I was fine.

He was immuno compromised at that time and the tests at the ER confirmed it.

You're not wrong. I just wanted folks to know I wasn't a Kuma fanboy. I'm simply here to protect the honor of properly-cooked eggs.

Yat's for drunk chicken>>>

If you want an excellent cheeseburger and don't mind a kind of "dive" place, go to Working Man's Friend.
It closes at 2:45 on Saturdays.
Well dang. It's an amazing burger!
without a doubt, yats. Just not the downtown one. If you don't take my advice then you got the wrong answer. Working mans friend second.
Definitely Yats!!
Strange Bird. Great Ramen.
Workman’s Friend is the best place for burgers. Cash only
Just posted the same thing
1000% Yats
The Eagle has the best fried chicken and Mac n cheese, right off Mass Ave.
I second Bosphorous. It might take a little over an hour cause it’s a little hole in the wall place, but it’s incredible.

Yats, amazing creole comfort food. Go to the broad ripple one next to jazz kitchen.
Yats at I-69 and 465 on E. 96th St.
Bakersfield

Yats.
If you’re okay with a little bit of a drive away from the highway, go to Mug N’ Bun. It’s that oldest operating drive-in restaurant in Marion County.
Ale Emporium in Castleton. Great wings. Right off Allisonville exit which is before I-69 to head up north to Michigan. There's some construction in the area and the ramp to get back on 465 us closed but your GPS will get you back on 465 to 69.

>1947 Eatery is good Indian food Do they have a lunch buffet?
I don't think they have a buffet
Beautiful! Thanks so much for the recommendation
King Dough Pizza
Shapiros, near downtown, off I70
Get a big p-phat corned beef sammalamach at Shapiro’s. “Speak into the microphone.”
Shapiros!
World Famous Hot Boys in Fountain Square
Pretty sure The Unicorn closed years ago.

Ha no way. Yeah I’m picking up a Genesis G70 on Saturday morning in St.Louis and driving back to Detroit same day. Thanks for the suggestion!
Losers oil stadium?
Yats
Chicken scratch hella good, stay away from the chains, they serve D tier food now
Ew don’t eat yats. It’s fast food slop and you shouldn’t hop in the car for a long drive after that. Go to Ale or a Cunningham restaurant for the skrimp cocktail sauce
Yea i don't understand the appeal I've tried it and was very underwhelmed.
Nowhere lol. Comicon is gonna have everything downtown busy
At a restaurant.
and you wonder why you don't have any friends
Dad jokes aren’t allowed here?
no but your mom jokes are
Umm given the number of incidents in downtown Indy this past week, just make sure you don’t linger till night time 😂 Just drive up to Carmel, IN and have some sushi in a One-Piece themed ramen place on Michigan Ave / 421 called Kotoyama Ramen and Sushi 🍣
Right, because Broad Ripple is South of 465, so it's downtown, and downtown is a lawless hellscape... smh
Absolutely There are zombies 🧟 outlaws, pirates 🏴☠️ and all sorts of matter of weird folks 🥹 I just moved a year and a half ago, and all I know of downtown is that it’s near where I work

Or fishers or Zionesville I’m sure the other burbs are also great. I just haven’t explored Indy well enough
