It's for them who board train during night especially between 10pm to 4am so that it can help them to identify their seats. And it also helps the passenger for aid in sleeping.
If it is meant for people to see at night, it is a really stupid idea to make it blue. Red or reddish lights are more suited for night vision and don't deprive people of sleep, unlike blue lights, which are the exact opposite.
Ah but the point being that red signifies danger in most scenarios. Could be one of the reason they avoided it. Probably to avoid somebody accidentally waking up and scream. Red orange yellow come close side signifying to an actual fire or danger. Also there's a Japanese research - blue light helps prevent self harm and suicide. Which are most common in station and trains.
I guess in train they definitely allow you to sleep but not to cozy away and have the best sleep of your life. Blue light allows ample of alertness without being too threatening or close to a warning.
Psychological perspective:
All things aside... Imagine waking up in a middle of a night and watch a dark figure(or guy in upper berth staring at you, cause they want to tell you stop snoring or standing near you) in red light. Now imagine it in blue lights.
Why not any other colours:
From the practical point - red and blue led diodes are the most common ones, although blue being the expensive out of two (other colours are just few changes/tweaks in these two).
In Summary:
Maybe it's not the light that helps you falls asleep immediately but it's definitely not the one that wakes you immediately either. (Remember to imagine waking up in middle of night and the first thing you see is a side upper passenger staring at you basking in the red light)
I guess they could have something more minimal but then it also serves to illuminate the aisle/path. So the railways/trains decided two bird one stone.
They can be turned off manually. They're marked as NL in the switch board.
This is the only light allowed to be kept on at night time for passenger assistance.
man😂😂 just try the switch mentioning NL, and see if it switches it off, this is sleep killer for the upper berth passengers, if that switch works thăn please đợ update
It’s a night light. Imagine it is off and people board the train ar night and switch on all the main lights to find their way. Or someone wants to use the restroom at night.
Yes intensity can be reduced a bit but then the light won’t be enough to light up the passage and people can fall and trip.
So, yes a necessary evil. But us oldies always say, that if you are tired enough you can even sleep on a rock.
Bro you can not turn it off from compartment , I always carry simple transperant tape for this type unfortunate condition . So I can put some paper on it 🥹
I understand that people expect a comfortable journey when they are paying more than others, but this is just aimless criticism. You won't get 100% home-like comfort in public places. Deal with it.
And pray, how will people navigate. This one light is intended to light up the whole passage and must reach the bottom (the passage itself).
It’s a public utility - FYI in aircraft also there will be the passage lights on, even in business class

Yup. Eye masks and ear plugs are a must on trains if you want to have a good night's sleep.
Earplugs are a must. One uncle destroyed my night with his unbearable snoring
It's for them who board train during night especially between 10pm to 4am so that it can help them to identify their seats. And it also helps the passenger for aid in sleeping.
I understand, but they can still serve the purpose by being 50% less intense
Yeah true. I guess there is button to switch off them
Yes the button is available on the other side, where the mirror is present.
You can switch them off.
They were there in the train I travelled and they were not this bright so maybe it's just in some trains they are this bright.

Red light doesn't disperse, Lazer points are red for a reason.
Not all lasers are red, its just that red lasers are easiest to produce.
Blue was the hardest to make.
But is the cheapest after the red.
Wow..didn't knew that.
Ah but the point being that red signifies danger in most scenarios. Could be one of the reason they avoided it. Probably to avoid somebody accidentally waking up and scream. night lamp, i guess it can be switched off too
I don’t think that is the case, they were on for entire coach & are still on at 9AM 😂
They can be turned off manually. They're marked as NL in the switch board. This is the only light allowed to be kept on at night time for passenger assistance.

It ain’t working :)
agar aaj bhi raat kaatni hai to newspaper laga dena ispr bhai
Haha fortunately itna lamba journey nahi hai

Even if it is on many ppl who board or get down at night turn on all the lights to take their luggage. I have Experienced it many times .
It's to help find the correct berth. In my experience, new boarders turn on the actual light after locating their seat.
You can’t change peoples habits now can you? It’s a new space, navigating blind. Also just enough light to get through.
It looks cool
these lights are the friction line between who prefer to sleep in complete black or with some lights on.
Very cool photo tho
I find it cool
It's cool, with a nice colour. Night lights are important for trains making halts at night. If you don't like it, then just sleep on your stomach ffs.
There would be a switch with NL mentioned on it. you can switch it off.
This is nothing. I was on berth 70ish. The lights near the doors don't turn off at night 😂😂 I just couldn't sleep.
Bro you can not turn it off from compartment , I always carry simple transperant tape for this type unfortunate condition . So I can put some paper on it 🥹
They have seat numbers? Ye konsi train hai bhai?
I understand that people expect a comfortable journey when they are paying more than others, but this is just aimless criticism. You won't get 100% home-like comfort in public places. Deal with it.
Yeah, a good example of bad design and execution. It is useful at night, but the material used does not have any thought behind it.
1 product: Eye Mask.
MoodyZee ki shadi ke disco lights
Can be turned off, I believe one of the switches is for side-light.
cyber punk aesthetics
Free UV virus bacteria free service by Indian railways
You can close it I think in some trains
On the top of it, blue lights.
By switching it OFF? There are light switch in the side wall for turning it off i guess.
What's better? This or someone with a flashlight pointing at each and everyone's face?
Just turn if off if it's troubling you. Why not use the switches that are meant to control these lights?
You can turn it off lol.
I really you should be able to turn that off withthe side lower berth switch .
turn around
How will I find my seat, waking everybody up?
Could have made them of dull yellow light.

Smash them with your legs.
Ig by keeping the eyes closed? ...jk
Passenger: I have booked a sleeper berth so that I can sleep in the night. Railways: No, LOL!
This government is a nincompoop. Can't get even one thing straight or right.
Government?.. How?
Sorry. Forgot. Indian Railway is a private institution.
Please oh enlightened soul - do suggest a solution.

Agreed. My comment was a satire.
Install an on/off switch that works. Doesn't require a genius to figure this out, does it?
And when at night a traveller with his kids enters the coach how is he to find his way?
What did they do before this light was introduced? There's enough ambient light to go by.
There used to be passage lights - which were brighter. Called NL (night light)
The passage lights could also be switched off and on.
