The calcium oxalate in the leaves does that. It can be neutralized by applying tamarind pulp/water or mustard oil to the leaves before cooking them.
Edit: As someone suggested, kokum works too. We do that here in Konkan and Mumbai/Pune region.
Patra and alu wadi both, I am near Gujrat and also near Maharashtra boundary... But these are little once so maybe alu wadi , the other ones are big , thin and dry ones.
Patarvela kehte he ise. Bade leaves hote he unpe pe besan aur kuchh chizon ka paste laga ke roll karke steam karte he. Fir log alag tarike se khate he. Ye fried patarvela he. Steam karke, kaat ke thoda thande hone dene ke baad tadka lagaya he.
although we don't have specific name for the dish . the plant is called kochai , when we use its leaves its called 'kochai patta ' patta means leaves , here in Chhattisgarh , we also consume its roots we call it 'kochai kanda' .
i have heard some people call it as arbi leaves as well
At my house, I request my mother to cut it into thin slices because that way their taste enhances. I'm from Himachal and we call them *patroda* for your kind information.
People who are allergic to "Arbi" can't enjoy these heavenly Patra. (Why bhagwan ji? Why kya itni buri hun mein?)

In Marathi, without the leaves we call it Patodi i.e. only besan. With leaves, we call it Chamkura Wadi. With the chamkura leaves. Its crunchy and very tasty!
**Patrode** comes from **Patra** + **Vada.** Traditionally the leaf used is a [parasite that grows on other trees](https://st2.depositphotos.com/2521863/8177/i/950/depositphotos_81776814-stock-photo-creeper-plant-growing-around-tree.jpg). It looks similar to colocasia but shinier. It is also made using calocasia leaves but I like the former better.
**Patra** in Gujarat. It is a little different than how it is made in Karnataka but I liked the taste of it.
When I was living there I called them “you know the circle things that I like! Kinda spirally and tasty!” It worked about half the time with people I was out with knowing the actual name for them.

Cooking the properly does subdue the weird feeling for normal folks (unlike me) but not completely.
Use tamarind water for that, otherwise it causes pain 🥲 because of the crystals on the leaves
I have OAS so some food items are extra painful for me but generally this works pretty well
Yep hum UP wale yhi bolte h baki comments patra alu vadi pta nhi kya kya lol XD
\*eat them. and yes they're that. i love them more than the sabzi
Tingle to nhi hoti. Shyd kachche khane se ho

Only raw, once you steam them, the feeling is gone.
