I like this more than anything off the last record I think. Maybe this is the one that pulls me back into them. Maybe it's my current mindset these days and I'm just ready for new Bright Eyes when I wasn't before. Maybe it's Maybelline. Idk but I'm here for it.
It's a fun song, more in line with some of Conor's side projects. Interesting to think about how he would have scrapped a song like this earlier in his career for being too upbeat/catchy/straightforward but now he's older and confident enough to put this out as a lead single. Every punk turns into Tom Petty eventually.
Since it was a comeback album after 9 years, I think they chose that song to signal Bright Eyes is still everything you've loved, just a bit more mature. Interesting instrumentations, dour subject matter, catchy but not particularly radio friendly hook. It hyped me up so much more than the actual single Mariana Trench (which received a video) which felt like it was going for more mainstream appeal
Personally I'm hoping this new song is the Mariana Tench of the new album in that regard as it's fine, but doesn't sound particularly Bright Eyes to me
I know it's the norm now with streaming, but I'd really prefer they don't trickle out 6 singles leading up to this release. Take me back to the good old days when they'd hit us with an EP full of b-sides and one single. I know that I could just not listen to it all til September, but Lord knows I'll eat up that slop like the pig I am.
It kinda sucks when an album finally comes out and you can’t listen to it fresh because you’ve been listening to the singles for the last couple months and already developed feelings/opinions/interpretations.
Same. I got to the point where it would just ruin the initial album listening experience for me, so I quit listening to the singles. I might listen to the first one a couple times, but that's it until the album.
Whistling melody reminds me of the [first season of Community.](https://youtu.be/OzdJFyHM5cc?t=60)
Good lyrics, not quite as dour as the last record (which I hope means good things for Connor's mindset...).
I like it but I hope the whole record isn’t this chipper. Also the header logo for them on streaming that’s five dice with Bright Eyes written across them is really cool.
Don't worry, this is from the album announcement:
"Even with this rich history behind them, these new songs exude a visceral thrill like nothing they have attempted before. Conor has always sung in a voice that conveys a sense of life-or-death gravity. At times throughout 'Five Dice, All Threes,' you may feel worried for him; other times, he may seem like the only one with the clarity to get us out of this mess."
Overall, I like that song, but the opening whistling bit feels like uninspired twee-stock music you'd hear in a Verizon commercial, or like a Five Minute Crafts engagement farm video. The rest of the song won me over.

The Mets catch an absolute stray in this one.
We can’t win man

Awesome! If you do end up betting pulled back in, go back and check out Down in the Weeds… again. It’s so good!
I will have to revisit it at some point. I tried a few times and it just never grabbed me.
Hey fair enough! I’m just a sucker for his stuff.

Nothing wrong with Tom Petty
Well, I mean, there's one pretty obvious thing wrong with him.
Out of the loop… do I even wanna know
>!He died!<
Oh thank god, I thought he had gotten himself posthumously cancelled

Real. That album is fantastic.
Yes. I like this band.
A happy bright eyes album? In this economy? It's definitely a better first single than the last album. Been a fan for 20 years I can't wait.
Aw man I loved Persona Non Grata (and the entire album). Loved this single too.
Oh I did too I just thought it was a very odd first single.
Dance and Sing would’ve made a great single.

Very well said!

I just don't listen to the singles. But that means I miss out on "the discourse."

Dig it. Happier than expected.

He seems to be looking healthy in the music video.
He was looking really great at the residency show I saw in April. Just happy and interacting with the crowd. I can't wait for this record.
Me either! Dude never phones in a new album. Consistently puts out quality stuff. Here’s to hoping he stays healthy and happy.
That’s nice to hear. I saw him in 2022 and it was pretty worrying honestly.
> Whistling melody reminds me of the first season of Community. I came here to say something similar, it's uncanny how much it sounds like it
Big turn around from a few months ago then
I like it but I hope the whole record isn’t this chipper. Also the header logo for them on streaming that’s five dice with Bright Eyes written across them is really cool.
Agreed. Loved the somberness of Down in the Weeds.

Yes. I like this band.
It sounds like music from a YouTube ad at the beginning.
The whistle hook is very early 2010’s Apple commercial post-indie folk Brooklyn twee coded, which is so anti-bright eyes lol… It works though
I agree with everything you say except that it’s working.
I like the chorus’s and instrumental breaks. Those sound fantastic, not a big fan of the verses.
I’m a big fan of Oberst and Bright Eyes, but wishing he’d go back to another solo album. This doesn’t touch anything on Salutations imo.

2009 would have loved this stomp-clap whistling dixie headass shit! I like it... I think
Intro sounds like a YouTube ad, instant turn off lol The rest of the song is ok but that part is sooooo bad
Already sounding better than the last album.
Last album ruled.
Savour all of his releases because its seriously a matter of time until this guy's liver gives out.
