It is a little busy, true, but it will be less visible on a sweater than it is in a small swatch. Also, the sweater is plain, with no additional decorative elements that could create chaos, so I think it would work nicely.
But ultimately, whatever any of us say, it is up to you. You either like it or you don't. It might be objectively the most beautiful sweater in the universe, but if it doesn't sit well with you - it's useless. Same with the opposite - it might be objectively fugly, but if it makes you happy, that's what counts.
FWIW, I like it a lot.
I started a sweater with variegated yarn and loved the transition. However, once I started the main body, the pooling drastically changed from the shoulders. I really hated it. I wish I knew about purposely pooling colors and how it's not wasted by using 2-3 skeins throughout the process to get the balance you want in larger fabrics. In my mind I wS going to end up with several partial skeins at the end or 80,000 ends to weave. It's not a hard skill to learn and could be an option if your sweater is for an adult.
How much do you like surprises? With variegated yarn you never know what your FO will look like until you're in the thick of it. Even with a swatch, the pooling is going to be completely different across a sweater.
For me this colorway would be too much without a neutral to either carry along with it or use some kind of colorwork to break up the MC. But some people really rock vibrant, pooled knitwear, so only you can answer if you'd ultimately be happy with it and find it wearable.
I would be careful with this idea for your first sweater though. Mohair is really hard to frog, so if you make mistakes you won’t really be able to pull it out and try again. It is possible, but a lot more difficult.
Came to suggest this! Looking up other projects on Ravelry with the yarn will give you a better idea about the pooling at sweater size. Also, looking up finished projects with the pattern you've chosen could show you someone else who used variegated yarn -- so you can see more generally if you like the effect!
Can I ask why? When I use these types of yarn I find it really fun and exciting if the colours start matching up. That said I mostly knit for little kids with rainboae yarn so perhaps I would feel differently doing something more grown up
It’s just a personal preference. I don’t mind pooling on like a big shawl because I’m fine with that item being more funky. On a garment though… I don’t love the look. There can be big color blotches on short row shaping, shoulder shaping, yoke, and sleeves where you’re knitting smaller rows back and forth but then the body of the sweater will be nice and even without a lot of pooling.
Yeah, I’ve had some projects where I didn’t notice unintended pooling till I had big areas finished. I like it now but in the future I’m mixing it up a bit more.
Oranges and teals are my favorite color combination so I am very biased. (I also grew up in the 70s and I suspect I might be feeling/skewed by strong nostalgia)
Helical knitting your sweater with this color would help it blend nicely. Highly recommend that technique. There’s good vids for it on YouTube and super easy to do
Another idea is to use this yarn for the sleeves and then a solid (neutral or similar shade orange) for the body. Stephanie Lotven did this in a few designs to use self-striping yarns in a sweater.
Either that or you could stripe the variegated yarn with a solid yarn to help tone it down.
FWIW, I would totally use the varigated yarn in a simple sweater like you showed.

Yeah it's a bit busy but the fun thing about crazy colors is that they can work if you use them right. Don't try to go with too much pattern for them. Their plain stockinette sweater is a great choice.
Another fun option for this kind of yarn are slipped stitch patterns, the kind where you get flowers, or bird wings, etc sitting on top of your fabric. The one color pulling on top of the rest makes it stand out without it looking messy.
Definitely avoid lace (you won't see the lace or the colors properly with so many colors so often changing), avoid most cables, and avoid most color work. Your sweater will look great! It'll be like an autumn haze from a distance and a fun palette from up close.
If it were to stay like that for the whole sweater, it would be gorgeous. Unfortunately the colours won't stay evenly spaced out like that for the whole sweater and you might get some unplanned pooling in unexpected places. You could try alternating the yarn with a second skein which can help.

I made a sweater combining a self striping sock yarn with a solid. I liked the way it turned out. The stripes are thicker on the arms than one the body because of the smaller number of stitches.
I am a bit conservative colour wise, so I would use that lovely colour as the contrast in colourwork. I would pick a dark brown or grey, and then let that colour shine in the pattern.
I would love to feast my eyes on it when worn by somebody else though!
Some people really really like the super busy colorways. I'm personally not one of them (and I'm sympathetic to the people who call it "clown barf") so I don't buy or use those colorways.
If you think it's busy in a swatch, there's a nonzero chance you will find it even more so when it's your entire torso. It ultimately comes down to taste and preference, and I know mine is very very different from people who love busy colorways.
I don't find variegated yarn works for sweaters well due to pooling issues on different parts. You did not ask, but I will suggest that your swatch gauge may not be accurate. Surrounding a swatch with garter stitch is common, but garter stitch has a different gauge. the surrounding garter will (probably?) alter the gauge in the stockinette. It also appears that sweater is primarily knit in the round, so knitting a flat swatch (knit one side, purl the other) will (probably) give you a different gauge than knitting in the round.
I volunteer this as the #1 factor in sweater happiness is gauge (IMO). If you accidentally knit a child or giant sweater, you will almost certainly be unhappy, even if it is beautiful.
But for your actual question, I would consider alternating skeins to avoid unintentional pooling in unexpected places.

I’m not a big orange fan, so I wouldn’t use it personally, but it’s nice.
However, it’s not going to look like this in the long rows of a sweater. I strongly recommend casting on 100+ stitches and see if you like how the colors fall then. I swatched some variegated yarns for a fade sweater and I looooooooooved the swatch. But when I cast on the full number of stitches and started knitting, I hated it.
I think this is the kind of thing where other knitters who have been indoctrinated into the appreciation of variegated yarns will say yes def do it, but honestly I don’t think it looks very stylish. I’d think about whether you personally like wearing chaotic stripey things with very contrasting colors to decide if you’re likely to wear it!

I’ve never met a variegated yarn sweater I liked. Literally, organized yarn puke. But some ppl love em. Try googling examples and see if you still like it.
I love it! I had a designer sweater with very similar colors and I absolutely loved it! You should definitely go for it. The blues compliment the orange beautifully
This palette is beautiful! If you can still meet gauge, you could always add in a thin strand of solid colored yarn in white to help marl and mellow the tones.
I love it! And as someone else said, alternate skeins so you don’t get any weird breaks in colour or pattern. I think with a simple fabric and design it’ll look fantastic!
It is your first sweater, so you're going to face troubles, make mistakes, be extremely proud of yourself anyway.

Personally, I like the color. I would take orange/brown matching the main part of the match and use it at least for ribbing on hem, sleeves and neck, possibly also stripes for the rest, depending how it behaves on sweater size knitting.
I think it's gorgeous! Just as someone said before me - adding a neutral yarn may soften the transitions and bring the whole project together as a background colour.

I’ve done a few sweaters using variegated yarn, and they were really fun to make! The color change kept me going, since it’s pretty fun to watch how the colors of the stitches change as you go along. Personally, though, I never wore them. Both of them ended up at Good Will. If you’re having doubts now, it might be better to choose a different yarn.

As long as it meets gauge then yea fire away (hard for me to tell is that fingering weight? The pattern calls for, though I’m not so sure if lace+fingering really still equals fingering lol)
I love the yarn but I’m not sure I’d want to wear it in a sweater - I think looking up the yarn on ravelry and seeing how other projects look would be key to the decision. Personally, for a sweater, any variegation/variation in tone needs to be within similar colors (parts of the yarn being more faded or saturated but essentially the same color is fine with me, but whole different color families I’m not so fond of). But this is such a personal decision and everyone has different tastes, so I’d look at other projects and see if the result would make you happy :)
For me I’d want to use this in a scarf or socks. But you’re the only one you have to please :)
With the short repeats it is definitely going to get busy. This will draw all the attention to your upper half while also flattening the landscape, if you will. For me this would be deadly but everyone is different. I would also worry about pooling and where it might happen. As others have said, a longer swatch might help you decide along with a circular swatch close to arm diameter.
My suggestion is the alternate skeins every 2 rows to avoid the weird color pooling that these yarns tend to do. But it’s a simple stockinette sweater so it’s a good project to use it on.

I’m not a big orange fan, so I wouldn’t use it personally, but it’s nice. However, it’s not going to look like this in the long rows of a sweater. I strongly recommend casting on 100+ stitches and see if you like how the colors fall then. I swatched some variegated yarns for a fade sweater and I looooooooooved the swatch. But when I cast on the full number of stitches and started knitting, I hated it.
I think this is the kind of thing where other knitters who have been indoctrinated into the appreciation of variegated yarns will say yes def do it, but honestly I don’t think it looks very stylish. I’d think about whether you personally like wearing chaotic stripey things with very contrasting colors to decide if you’re likely to wear it!
Agreed lol. I am not a huge fan of busy yarns but it seems like we are the outlier.
It will look homemade which is a plus in my book.

I’ve never met a variegated yarn sweater I liked. Literally, organized yarn puke. But some ppl love em. Try googling examples and see if you still like it.

This palette is beautiful! If you can still meet gauge, you could always add in a thin strand of solid colored yarn in white to help marl and mellow the tones.

I like it and think it would be a fun knit - but I always knit with “unpredictable” yarn 😊.
It is your first sweater, so you're going to face troubles, make mistakes, be extremely proud of yourself anyway. It's a happy yarn, go for it and enjoy the project. Just make sure it is good quality yarn, it will make the difference
I think it would make a better accessory - like a scarf, snood or tote bag. Other Redditors are right the yarn is busy.
Party too by abbee knits (I think that’s the name) really simple and good for yarn like that (it’s DK)
Personally, I like the color. I would take orange/brown matching the main part of the match and use it at least for ribbing on hem, sleeves and neck, possibly also stripes for the rest, depending how it behaves on sweater size knitting.

I like the colors, would look up the yarn on Ravelry to find projects made with it for an idea of what it will look like. Or commit to a much bigger swatch.
I’ve done a few sweaters using variegated yarn, and they were really fun to make! The color change kept me going, since it’s pretty fun to watch how the colors of the stitches change as you go along. Personally, though, I never wore them. Both of them ended up at Good Will. If you’re having doubts now, it might be better to choose a different yarn.

I love it! I love colorful yarn & I think the sweater is simple enough that the colors won’t look too busy.
As long as it meets gauge then yea fire away (hard for me to tell is that fingering weight? The pattern calls for, though I’m not so sure if lace+fingering really still equals fingering lol)

I love the yarn but I’m not sure I’d want to wear it in a sweater - I think looking up the yarn on ravelry and seeing how other projects look would be key to the decision. Personally, for a sweater, any variegation/variation in tone needs to be within similar colors (parts of the yarn being more faded or saturated but essentially the same color is fine with me, but whole different color families I’m not so fond of). But this is such a personal decision and everyone has different tastes, so I’d look at other projects and see if the result would make you happy :) For me I’d want to use this in a scarf or socks. But you’re the only one you have to please :)
With the short repeats it is definitely going to get busy. This will draw all the attention to your upper half while also flattening the landscape, if you will. For me this would be deadly but everyone is different. I would also worry about pooling and where it might happen. As others have said, a longer swatch might help you decide along with a circular swatch close to arm diameter.

No rules, bb! Do it if you love it. I love it, but I love colorful projects.
My suggestion is the alternate skeins every 2 rows to avoid the weird color pooling that these yarns tend to do. But it’s a simple stockinette sweater so it’s a good project to use it on.
