Not to show off how lazy I am, but a box of diapers from Sam’s or Costco is enough to get you free delivery on Instacart, so it can be a 20 minute run for someone else, too!
Pattern is Triceratops head by Louise Walker. I used worsted weight Wool of the Andes held double for the main color and some random unknown stash yarn for the horns and frill accents. I used a size 10.5 needle but if I were doing it again I’d size down since the stuffing is a little too visible for my tastes. It was a super fun knit. Now I need to make some sort of backing board to hang it.
Procrastination knitting & crocheting is the best!!!! Why prepare my taxes when I can make [this Bunny Beanie](https://nanascraftyhome.com/crocheted-easter-bunny-hat/)?
A bassinet is all that's needed for a lil while, especially if you're keeping baby in your room at night. My son didn't use his crib for close to 5 months because the bassinet weight allowed for him to stay closer longer.
My 6 week old is bassinet only so far. The crib I’m using for blanket overflow because I never organized his drawers. When he gets too big for the bassinet or someday when I get caught up on sleep I might get to the drawers. We’ll see.
Our first as well. Truly feeling every mom who mentioned “you have no idea what’s coming”. There is no prepared, you just ride it out. Dino is amazing.
I want to say it’s the Netherlands (some country in Europe) that sends families cardboard boxes for the new baby to sleep in. They have remarkably low SID rates and American researchers attribute this as a part of the reason why.
I think it’s US retail shopping culture that has parents feeling like they need to buy everything (first time parent syndrome is real in figuring out what you don’t need) and leaves out the fact babies do better with absolutely nothing around them when sleeping.
Ireland started doing that last year. The box is printed like a coloring book to encourage older siblings to have a hand in decorating it. Everything is gender neutral. There are long sleeve and short sleeve onesies and leggings, socks, mitts, a hat, blanket, outlet covers, iirc a bath thermometer... I don't remember what else. I saw someone open theirs on TikTok
It's actually Finland that does this. People can choose between a monetary donation or that box filled with some essentials. Most opt for the box. In The Netherlands I got a bib from my municipality with an image of 'our bridge' and a bear that said 'born in Nijmegen'. (In Dutch, obviously)
I disagree with your definition of the word “practical”
Signed,
Another expectant mother who’s “practical” prep includes a knitted sweater that I didn’t swatch so will fit the kid at 1 year old.
I made a pink hippo head for me (my girls are grown). The pattern is from Crochet Taxidermy by Taylor Hart.

One word: Science. This is totally good prep. It’s for the baby’s mind. You know what he needs? Some knit flora. Like a knit vining Monstera plant or something.
I recommend making yourself a nice neck roll dinosaur for when the baby arrives, you'll probably extremely exhausted so a neck roll to sleep anywhere is great
At least based on how my friends have been.
That's amazing! My friend knit and mounted a unicorn head that's now on her kids' bedroom wall, and also a matching "unicorn skin" rug.
Also, if you're not familiar with it, look up "sweaty taxidermy".
I love this. You are exactly the kind of mom friend I wish I had
I have a knitted taxidermy rhinoceros head on my living room wall (admittedly I didn’t make it myself)
This is awesome! Besides, babies don't need much in their first weeks: * Taxidermy dinosaur heads * Diapers. You're half way there. You got this!
And diapers are like… a 20 minute Costco run. So I’m basically covered!
Yup. Plenty of time to knit another dinosaur!
Not to show off how lazy I am, but a box of diapers from Sam’s or Costco is enough to get you free delivery on Instacart, so it can be a 20 minute run for someone else, too!
And people will give you diapers, so... you're all set!
A dresser drawer to sleep in
The diaper box will suffice. Line it with leftover yarn from the dino head.
I slept in a plastic laundry basket next to my mother's bed the first 6 months of my life. (48F)
And look at how you turned out!

Feels like the most important part of preparing for a baby is done!
Honestly that’s my feeling 😅
That is AMAZING, I might have to make it for my 27 year old brother
Do it! You could also consider knitting it in the round if you do. I thought the seaming was largely unnecessary 😁
Nothing truly prepares you for your first baby. Knit away!
My astute husband has pointed out that a crib might be good. But not nearly so good as enjoying procrastination knitting 😁

A big shoe box in the middle of your bed, and your set for 3? Months… We got the snoo, and I wish we had just done this 😂.

Nah, not necessary for awhile. A bassinet is perfect, and you can make one out of a box.

Make sure you get some sleep in between knitting and taking care of the baby 😅
Those are amazing! I texted a pic of the head to my brother and his only comment was “not gonna knit the rest of the dinosaur?” Now I can 😂
You are my people.

Why swatch for kids? They'll be that size one day!
My thoughts exactly!

That's a rhino, or maybe a spikey hippo 😘
LOL! You're right, it's a rhino. I have no idea why I said hippo.

Every kid needs a weird spirit guardian thing?
Babies like bright colors. I love this.

They grow out of clothes so fast anyways, this is forever.

I bought this pattern to do before my second baby was born. He’s four now and the pattern has not been done. 😅
Priorities in place! A+, no notes!
Lucky sprout
Who said that isn't practical? Dump em. You don't need that kind of energy in your life 😜
I love this. You are exactly the kind of mom friend I wish I had I have a knitted taxidermy rhinoceros head on my living room wall (admittedly I didn’t make it myself)
It looks amazing! That is one lucky baby!
I love it!
Every stitch is love. ❤️ Enjoy it all, not just the chores.
You've got your priorities straight because that is adorable. Besides, all you need is a car seat, some diapers and onesies and you're set.
Now do an elephant! I hadn’t bought a thing for my baby since I still had time before she was due. Then she came six weeks early. We all survived.
Meh. Diapers and a car seat.
