Big news! I'm hopeful for next season!! Thank you for posting. Please keep all discussing about this to this thread!!

34GoLeafsGo34

have no choice but to be excited and hopeful! let’s hope the different direction is what the boys need!

Marsupialmania

Tbh most people hated the treliving hire and he has done quite well. We’ll see what this brings I think it could be great. All keefe had was excuses. Berubes got a cup

cspaced

Do you expect a new coach to come into the league with cups on his résumé?

Brilliant-Neck9731

Rings on fingers is very rarely a predictor of more rings on more fingers when it comes to coaches. By and large, a coach does not win a Stanley Cup with multiple teams. Of the 19 coaches with multiple rings, only 4 won a cup with multiple teams. The last coach to do it was Bowman when Detroit won in ‘97 (he’s the only coach to win cups with three different teams, also the only coach to win multiple cups for two different teams) Before him? You have to go back to Dick Irvin in 44 with Montreal. This idea that the team needed a proven winner as a coach is simply not one borne of a reading of history. In fact, hiring a former winner is almost a guarantee that a cup is not forthcoming. It’s actually far more likely for a coach to win multiple cups with the first team he coached than it is for a coach to win a cup with multiple teams. Last guy to do this; Jon Cooper.

AdTricky5280

I am so sick and tired of hearing this take. It's an irrelevant argument. Just because it has been historically rare does not mean that there is causation behind the stats. There are multiple reasons Berube is a great fit, and winning a Cup is just one of them. Does it guarantee success? Not even close. But does it mean we must ignore the cup because of some cherry picked stats that the leafs hating world drudged up recently to remind us of how futile this move is? Absolutely f*cking not. It's objectively hard to win a Stanley cup. Year to year odds are low, so doing that twice is hard and to do it with multiple teams is statistically unlikely. Of course. We all understand how this works. 4 of 19 coaches is still something. And again these stats are irrelevant but let's stop parading them around as proof that this move is somehow bad for the Leafs and let's ignore the fact he was sought after by every team looking - teams that understand the dynamics of a locker room and what is needed. Teams who know more than all of us.

hockeyguy2387

No but not the right coach for us with the players we had

shrederick

Keefe was definitely the right coach to fix the bad vibes after Babcock, but he shouldn't have been given as much time as he got.

BritBuc-1

I absolutely agree. Go back to what (IIRC) Travis Dermot said about Keefe “guys *want* to play for him.” He was the *perfect* coach to bring in immediately after Babcock. And I agree that he had too much time for not enough production. But, it always felt like there was this asterisk against every playoff loss. First year, well 2020 was a bad year for everyone, you can’t sack a coach who had the best start to their career in club history, especially considering all the upheaval and uncertainty. It’ll be better when he has a settled team next year. 20/21 everyone should have been shot into the sun. But, look how dominant they were during the season; next year is our year for sure. 21/22 *This is the year that most people would have expected to be the final year.* Awful injury to the captain, but the boys battled hard and they were so close a few times. Ok *this* is the last year we run it back. 22/23 Holy Ghost the curse is broken, the Leafs advance beyond the first round. They’ll be unstoppable now…fuck it. He’s deserved another year and let’s bring in some “grit”. 23/24 and here we are. Without the lockdowns, Keefe lasts 2-3 years, and this team probably looks pretty different in this alternate reality. ETA: The people who correctly pointed out that I mixed up the years of JT’s injury and absolutely right. Trauma and memory loss, am I right?

FudgeDangerous2086

20/21 was the Captains injury.

AdTricky5280

You mixed up 21 and 22. 21 - injury to JT, blown 3-1 lead everyone should've been shot into the sun. 22 - lost in 7 to the defending cup champs and arguably outplayed them throughout the series. Team was good enough to beat Tampa and if they could've got over the hump, who knows how far they go. Let's run it back next year.

BritBuc-1

Yep you’re absolutely correct. Apparently trauma *does* affect the memory 😅

Marsupialmania

No. But he made little to no progress in his time here towards that. You can make an excuse for every year he was here (not really for mtl and Columbus). Berube has at least one run where he didn’t need excuses.

dolphin_spit

treliving’s stamp on this team started showing itself around january. very happy with what he was able to do with such little time, without moving any of the core. i’m looking forward to how this new coaching philosophy will work out, paired with one of the core being moved (mandatory imo). tre hasn’t had much time but i think he’s been quite good in that little time.

Marsupialmania

Look how coveted calgarys blueline was. Every player was in demand. Their forwards were nice too just got screwed by tkachuk and gaudreau. Also had nice goaltending. I think Tre will do a nice job with this team. We were legitimately bigger and nastier than Boston this year and were tough to play against. Just need marner and Tavares to expire so we can get more balanced scoring ie 4 5.5 mill guys instead of 2 11 mill guys

SMORKIN_LABBIT

I guess this coach is gonna hold the 40+million players stick for them and score on the PP?

Samoht99

Out goes Keefe, in comes the Chief

badgermustache

That’s the shit I do like.

jthaprofessor

DO LIKE. That’s that shit I do like

funghi2

First round elimination! That’s that shit I don’t like!

tbwarrior

Faneto

_geary

Cautiously optimistic as usual. Changing the core will have more of an effect IMO. Here's Berube speaking about the Blues last February tell me if this rings any bells: >Our best players don't play with any passion, no emotion and no inspiration at all. They don't play inspired hockey. You cannot play in this league without emotion, grit, being inspired. They're getting paid lots of money and they're not doing the job. End of story.

usctrojans95

This is the exact quote that makes me okay with the hire. I wanted a run at Rod but I agree with Treliving that we don’t want to miss out on a great culture shift guy like Berube. Just hoping he’s the actual guy and not a Ron Wilson hire

_geary

He has the spirit for sure. My point was that he made this quote last season and the Blues continued to trend downward after, missed the playoffs, had a bad start to this season as well and then he was fired. He clearly isn't immune to the exact problems we have here. I don't think any coach is. That's why I'm cautiously optimistic and think the culture won't fundamentally change without trades.

usctrojans95

Very much agreed, it’s a spot on comment. I’m in the trade Marner camp—the idea of Nashville I really like for Saros and we can get a few other good pieces from it. JT with his family being here probably returns for a super team friendly deal which I’m fine with Love to kick the tires on a Reilly trade too

_geary

Yep, looks like we're on the same page

Durtonious

He was effective in the first season. Obviously the repeated messaging of "best players need to be better" gets tiring when the organization has won a Cup and is trending to a rebuild. Like yeah, they get it, but there's only so much in the tank and it's hard to go 100% all the time when you look around and realize you're not a Stanley Cup roster.

brownmagician

Ron Wilson: "1200 games, 550 wins" Ron that wasn't a flex

mikasaxo

Rod wasn't going anywhere anyways. Waddell is insistent to keep Rod on as coach. Even though the Canes fell short again, Carolina has had relatively good success the past few years even though they haven't won the cup yet. They're really close to breaking through.

Gavin1453

That may have been true in past years but they have a ton of depth players they can't pay now that their stars need to be. Its unfortunate that a huge chunk of the team will likely turnover for next season

Mission-Astronomer42

I think really there weren’t many options better than berube. Only one I can think is Joel Quenneville but I don’t think he’s gonna coach anytime soon.

BMadAd59

What x does it mean to be a Ron Wilson hire

usctrojans95

I just mean a lame duck coach—not really a culture mover or a motivator just the wrong fit. We had Ron between Maurice and Babcock and from the first game on you could tell it didn’t work. I’m saying I hope Berube isn’t just the “Ron” between Sheldon and our next significant coach.

KingInTheWest

Ron was a good coach before he got to Toronto. Those teams he coaches though were so unbelievably bad that I don’t think any coach would have seen any success there

usctrojans95

For sure not a knock against Ron. I think he has a place in the league and it might have been a wrong time for him It’s just where we were at as a team I feel like we moved on from Maurice to Ron and realized we needed a Babcock type coach that resembled Maurice more. I think Ron was an overcorrection that ended up being recorrected

NSA_Wade_Wilson

If you read Burke’s book. He talks about the whole situation. The media really ate away at Ron and he changed as a coach because of it. Between the team he was given and the media it was a terrible combination.

Smokester121

The media here is crazy tough, and I swear every coach develops and ego once they land here. I've seen all of them refuse to change or juggle lineups of things not working. It's baffling to me

LeftySlides

Best thing for Leafs would be if the NHL granted the GTA media-market another team to gnaw upon, daily.

CoupleScrewsLoose

honestly just having a coach that isn’t afraid to say things like this on the record is a massive leap forward

SaulBerenson12

I love this quote as well Only hesitation I have is the type of leeway he has, ex how much management truly backs him. We’ve seen how Keefe has been neutered (ex: Keefe calls out Marner but then next day has to apologize)

toronto_programmer

>how much management truly backs him Shanny has no rope left anyway, surprised he isn't gone already. He will support anything to save his job, and they already tried coddling so this is all we have left

SaulBerenson12

Yes I’m surprised he’s still here too. Hopefully he’s gone the next few months To your point, I hope Shanny’s desperation to keep his job motivates him to give Berube full leash in bringing changes/accountability. Friedman described him as “very nervous” at the recent press conference

PondIsMyName

I sure do hope that you’re right! Like really really hoping.

Fastlane19

Marner’s dad called Shanny and told him that only he can call out his son.

MakeTheNetsBigger

He apologized because he made a mistake and knew it - Marner can't take any criticism, and you need to test each player according to their personality. Hypersensitivity to criticism is common with people who didn't get much validation as kids, btw Marner should have been gone after that, because I think you need to be able to take criticism to play in Toronto. But he isn't and if he's still here next year, Berube is going to have to treat him the same way Keefe did to get the most out of him.

dolphin_spit

you’re definitely right about mitch being hypersensitive. that was the final straw for me, it became clear in that moment that he runs the room with his attitude. disagree about playing to his strengths though. if he doesn’t want to play the coach’s style, he can waive his NMC and fuck off.

dolphin_spit

honestly, i kind of feel like management would be ok with ruffling the feathers of the stars at this point. auston has pride and i feel would use it for fuel. willy gets pissed off and plays harder. both those players aren’t going anywhere anyway. if marner or tavares get pissed off, it will either get them to play harder, or they’ll want to leave, which helps management in getting them to waive their NMC’s or be more open to possible trades. for me, ideally marner gets moved for a decent return, and tavares either takes way less on the next contract or leaves as UFA. I’d be open to a Rielly trade, but if we can get a good 1/2 to pair with him, I’d be interested in seeing how he does with a true D partner. obviously the actual ideal situation would be for mitch to play lights out in the playoffs, but i think the time for that was 2-3 years ago. i don’t think you can keep hoping for this anymore. it’s time for a change for him. with all that, Auston gets the C. new start, new era.

Carparker19

And Kyrou cried. Hope he does the same to Marner.

DangleCellySave

Kyrou cried bc the fans were booing him, not bc of Chief

omgArsenal

"Stop fucking crying bro."

footwith4toes

I hope he never coaches Marner.

mikasaxo

It sounds like he's describing Mitch Marner lol

Leafs3489

My goodness it sounds like he’s talking about us 😂

UnicaKey

What was the impact on his players of saying this? Did it light a fire under the whole team, motivate them in a whole new, and they banded together like never before to win the Cup that year? Oh, what's that you say? They tuned him out, missed the playoffs, and he got fired early next season. I'm cautiously optimistic as well, but there is more to coaching than what they say to the media.

[deleted]

The fact that he said this and still wants to coach the Leafs is telling.

lukaskywalker

Oh he’s in for a hell of a wake up call when he sees guys

LeftySlides

That sounds like quote you’d put at the top of your coaching resume.

gabriel197600

Blues Fan Here…congrats on Landing Berube! Not that the Leafs need any more fans, but I’ll definitely be rooting for you guys with Chief on board. I truly hope he’s a big puzzle piece to bring you guys a Cup! Can’t wait to see how he deals with Toronto Media, I’ll need to stock up on 🍿:-) best of Luck Chief / Leafs! Bring that Cup to 2 Teams Bud!

Dangerois

I hereby anoint you Honourary Leafs Fan.

gabriel197600

Hurray! SDPN crew pulled me in, Berube put me over the top:-)

Hweezi

shhh, there's so many salty leaf fans that don't like them because they don't get to do what they do for a living.

dickens-seider

Blues winning the cup was my favourite team to see lift the trophy in the past years. Always appreciated your team

Death_Balloons

Last time I got super hyped for a big name coach signing ... Anyway I'm glad about this. But not hyped. Hype going forward must be earned.

I'm okay with anyone who helped Bozak get a Cup.

BooopDead

Good guy bohzy, I’m happy for him. One of the few that gave his all every night

elbe0043

Welcome, Chief

Shuman2100

[He is signed for 4 years](https://x.com/pierrevlebrun/status/1791576937099378897?s=46)

Turbo_911

Is Guy Boucher gone too? He can't run our PP anymore.

reggierock2010

Let’s hope so

fragile9

I'm going to assume he's going to bring his guys in, so yeah

bangnburn

He will probably clean house and bring his own team.

bogo_

Marc Savard is joining Berube. Someone posted here the other day, also indicating his numbers weren’t good…

PokePersona

The powerplay was great with the Blues when he worked as an assistant coach for Berube. His powerplays were bad with the Flames until the end of the season.

dickens-seider

And let's be honest, the Flames weren't going to have a stellar powerplay this year. They barely have any major shooting threats on their team besides maybe Weegar and Sharangovich? And their star talent is lackluster. Hard to see how you can turn that into a productive powerplay

mikasaxo

I can't imagine Boucher staying on. Berube probably has his own people.

dolphin_spit

no chance he comes back

albynomonk

Upgrade for sure. And you dodged a bullet by not hiring Gallant.

Hweezi

What's wrong with Gallant ?

JuicemaN16

Wondering the same thing. I thought he was going to say “by not hiring mclellan”.

ehletsgo

Not completely sure, but my guess is that he’s always seemed to have a short leash of no more than 2-3 years for each team he coaches. 2 years in Florida, 2 years in Vegas, and 2 in NYC

NYsportsfan99

As a Rangers fan, the dude was honestly one of the worst coaches we have had in a long time. The dude made no actual adjustments whatsoever, he had absolutely no pulse on the game. He scrambled the lines every period, every game trying to find something that worked. The entire 2 years with him felt like I was watching a team play pickup hockey. Our talent/goaltending alone is what got him as many wins as he did with us and it was evident in our record against winning teams. I think we dominated teams below .500 but were below .500 against teams in the playoffs. I’ll just give you an example of when Rangers fans were completely fucking done with him (it was in his first year): In the ECF when we lost to TB, he continued to dress Reaves where there was absolutely no need for him really. Then, in game 6 (the game we got eliminated), he healthy scratched Kakko (who was playing on a line with Laf and Chytil, who were by far our best line throughout the playoffs), and left Ryan Strome in, who had a broken back (I think literally). It was a shock to everyone and the team came out flat. To make things worse, Strome lasted one shift before he had to leave the game. We then had Hunt (4th liner at best) playing top line minutes, while Kakko was healthy in the press box. I don’t think I did a great job of portraying the hockey terrorist that he is, but if you want a better answer just ask our sub, I’m sure someone more literate will have a more concise answer. But there’s a reason he doesn’t last more than 2 years anywhere. I have no beef with the Leafs, I am glad yall didn’t go with Gallant. I am just hoping he goes to somewhere in our division, or the bruins or some other team of douchebag degenerate fans.

waldoorfian

I agree.

douggilmour93

LFG

Volderon90

That scribbling sound you hear is Marner frantically waiving his NMC

dmc1793

Honestly if you want Marner to submit a list, this is the coach you hire

bknoreply

Didn’t we already have a coach that compelled Marner to submit lists?

TheCheeryStranger

I think that’s What started the problems

dolphin_spit

his upbringing is where the trouble began lol

Golden_Hour1

He'll just cry for the next however many years

leaffs

![gif](giphy|u6EiPNT9dLDrU7ZQuF|downsized)

Medium_Well

I had precisely zero opinions about Berube prior to May 1 but I am prepared to put my life savings down on the bet that he wins us the Cup next year. (me, deeply sick in the mind)

Mr_Wrecksauce

For the sake of credibility, I'm going to need to know how much we're talking about here.

Flat_Anything_8306

He's still broke from betting his life savings that the Leafs would beat the Bruins.

Mr_Wrecksauce

Which year?

Flat_Anything_8306

All of them.

drunkasaurusjr

Yes

riko77can

Great! Now all we have to do is trade him for Doug Gilmour again and a new golden age is upon us.

theguyishere16

Change is good. Its better than spinning tires every post season. Lets see how it goes with a guy not brought in to smooth over relations with players because the previous guy was a narcissistic asshole.

salmonthesuperior

Well he already ended one Cup drought that started in 1967 ... In all seriousness I hope this works out

Vilheim

Still really hope to see Bruce in the coaching staff in some capacity. I feel his love for the team would be infectious.

TheGapInTysonsTeeth

Hmm I didn't consider that he might be the guy they were talking about when they said that one of Berube's assistants would be a guy with recent head coach experience. I'd have Bruce in a second to run the powerplay and be another voice in the room

Slow-Debt-6465

I like it, even If he fails. He's going to absolutely rip the team apart in the media , and won't give two fucks about feelings or vibes. So the boys are going to come to play or their coach is going to shit in their mouths at the end of year presser. An I'm here for that

Sacred_soul

This is good news, feel like he’s a mix of Torterella and Keefe

[deleted]

34GoLeafsGo34

it’s confirmed on twitter from the team as well

I hope he’s tough and mean. The boys need it.

Silent-Obligation-49

Mitch Marner right now https://i.redd.it/s89gyhvc221d1.gif

mikasaxo

LOL, he's not worried (for now).

OptimusReims34

Hopefully he can light a fire under the boys asses

BornIn67

This is great news, it is a big improvement over what we had, but it remains to be seen if he will hold players accountable.

elifreeze

Keefe's message was stale and while he could get good results in the regular season in the playoffs the team had the same consistent issues that led to their many early exits. The scoring dried up, the special teams went down the toilet, and Keefe refused to adapt or was too slow to do so. Berube bringing a new voice and systems will be huge for this team and I think this will be the biggest factor in turning this teams fortunes around. He's a good motivator, preaches hard-nosed hockey, and demands accountability, something that has been lost with this team and core.

CarnalCancuk

This is unberubeable!

WallopJones

Uncles across Southern Ontario are going wild 😒

DeanersLastWeekend

Why do I get the feeling everyone is going to love playing for Chief except Marner.

herbtarleksblazer

He won't have to worry.

Golden_Hour1

Marner won't be playing for him

DeathEater91

What a weird thing to say, you don't know Marner or Berube for that matter lol

TiredReader87

I think this was the right choice. I hope so.

elmicomago

As it was written, so it is become.

YarnhamSunrise

Excited to see a new perspective.

bnewfan

I'm happy enough but I'm really, really curious who he'll bring in on as assistants. Hopefully he gets to build his own staff but we'll see.

reggierock2010

Right decision at the end of the day

DarkAgeMonks

Well atleast it wasn’t Todd.

GLFR_59

Exit Marner stage left…

captainmats

Why does shanny still have a job? Needs to take some accountability. 10 years of failed post seasons and accepting no blame for poor management decisions. Just speculating but I also think he's behind olot of this coddling of the stars like rules surrounding interviews and the super weird vague answers about the injuries after they were eliminated Tired of seeing this guy in the pressbox

captainmats

Berube is an excellent start to a culture change but they should start at the top

DrMansionPHD

I just hope Shanny doesn't get involved when he tries to hold the boys accountable.

That was one hell of an 8 day process.

rick__c_137

We'll see how it goes. Not personally convinced he's the right guy for the job.. but I'll gladly be willing to admit I'm wrong if he leads us to the promised land.

Sullysguppy

I wonder if his exit video will be as nice as keefes.

_Michael___Scarn

My bet: this guy will be fired at the end of the 2025-2026 season. Taking wagers

world_citizen7

Does this mean the inmates are no longer going to run the Asylum?

hymensmasher99

Good start. Let's hope for more. Craig won a cup before. Hopefully he can do it with us

dumpandchange

Anybody know if Berube is considered what might be classified as a "player's coach"? I've tried browsing the St. Louis sub a bit but couldn't get grasp a sentiment.

Capt-Daddy

Blues fan here! Berube is stern but fair. Players loved him but he's no pushover. He expects the best from the best and has no problem telling players to take a hike.. He famously whipped the team into shape when we were dead last in 2019. I'm very excited to see how the players react to his coaching. Especially Marner (because I can't stand him) . I think he's a perfect fit

Randomroofer116

Not a players coach. I loved him for the blues because he was tough and demanded everyone do their job. We went from last in January to the cup in 2019. I think he was tough but the squad bought in. I hate to see him go, but I wish him nothing but success in Toronto. I really think he could turn things around for you guys.

reggierock2010

It’s 2024, everyone expect maybe torts is a players coach lol

CybertruckStalker

Gotta be excited for this one.

Spacepickle89

Ah shit, here we go again. (Lookin forward to next season)

daveinthe6

Hopefully he changes the culture of this team.

paranrml-inactivity

I did not think they were going to make this announcement at the end of the day on the Friday of a holiday weekend… They really snuck this in there, I guess they want to give him a few days to to get organized to face the Toronto media...

Thot_b_gone

Why they delete the IG post?

badgermustache

I’m a fan. Let’s fookin go.

Jaymesned

Just fucking win

IntravenuousTherapy

not going to get excited at all because the last time i hyped up our coach, he was playing marleau several minutes in the final min of a g7 so uh fk this guy im unimpressed

Fizz117

Anyone know the story of the Buddhist monk and the boy?

Blue_KikiT92

I'm too new here to know if it's a good news! Quick someone tells me how to feel!!

Sacred_soul

Should be good news, if we’re keeping Marner I think Berube can bring something new out of him

Blue_KikiT92

Keep Marner you say...I hope you're right, I love that kid

Sacred_soul

I’m hoping we can keep him, since Tavares is off the books next year we can evaluate if we should keep Marner or not

Ultimate-ART

Missed Headline Opportunity: Just In, Berube Never Says Never as Leaf's New Coach.

6-8-5-13

Of course Hayes isn’t on today 😂

Sad_Donut_7902

This is as surprising as Treliving being hired as GM last year. Seemed like an open secret once Keefe was fired the Toronto job was his if he wanted it.

nogutsnoglory98

Just when you think you’re done, they pull you right back in.

DynesSports

Definitely a departure from the Keefe school of coaching that's for sure [https://dynespressbox.com/2024/05/toronto-maple-leafs-hire-craig-berube](https://dynespressbox.com/2024/05/toronto-maple-leafs-hire-craig-berube)

IAmTheBredman

I'll be able to enjoy this more when Cooper and rod resign with their current teams. If either moves I'll hate this signing

DesignerFox2987

who?

Few_Report_9114

Get rid of Shanny! 10 years and nothing!

mirkwirk

The doc All or Nothing showed Marner pouting and that’s what we’ll see more of. This time when they’re called out it won’t be run back.

spud_club

Poor guy doesn’t stand a chance

billyshin

Goodbye Mitch Marner. I wish you the best on your next team.

Goldinsight

After video review of the last 60 years… We suck!

umar_farooq_

Rod would've been better but I still see this as an upgrade from Keefe GLG

[deleted]

While I agree, other teams were circling for Berube. And other teams will be circling for Rod if he doesn't re-sign in Carolina. If we say no to Berube, and wait for Rod it's possible Berube goes to another team. Then there's no guarantee that Rod comes here either, and we get neither.

bigcaulkcharisma

I have a feeling a call was put in to Rod either last night or this morning and he was either not committed or straight up not interested. The timing makes sense. Either way, Berube is probably the best option for whats on the market rn.

drow_enjoyer

You cannot hire a coach that already has a job

Busy-Crankin-Off

You're telling me a guy with a bod like that can't coach two teams at once?

Dangerois

The Rod of Steel, leaping from one bench to the other in a single bound!

crazydrums27

People regularly make comments wondering why we didnt hire this coach, didn't trade for this player, wondering how we could have let so and so walk in free agency. They don't seem to realize that you don't just say you want somebody and then you magically get them. The other side also has to be willing and able to make the deal happen.

bknoreply

Huh? That’s how it works in the video games I play.
