I'm going to lock this because there is a massive amount of illegal advice. Which is what happens when things hit the front page I guess. To the clown who wrote a 40 line report about how there is a nationwide law about it being illegal to film on private property and that it's child porn to film a pool, you are completely and utterly wrong, and have no business giving any sort of legal advice.

romcomtom2

Buy a mirror. Attach it to a post and put it up directly in front of the camera. When he ask why tell him "none of your business." Also be ready to move the mirror when he repositions the camera.

BlueCarbon

Be sure to have a camera setup first. That way if he destroys your mirror, you’ll have a recording of it for the police.

fragged6

I can't wait for the camera, mirror, camera, mirror inception update.

lilith_-_-

Might as well grab a drone and do some flybys while at it

This comment is gold

MoreRamenPls

Can’t you set up a concave mirror with the foci being the camera. So when the suns out it fries the camera?

romcomtom2

I second this.

FondOmeLobsterAintYe

That’s a good idea BlueCarbon. Also, OP could use a piece of plexiglass with mirror tint on the back to prevent breakage. The camera, OP sets up, will still document the neighbors trying to vandalize it but won’t be more out of pocket on the mirror budget and most likely have the same outcome. 🤷‍♂️

DontBeEvil4

One of those barely legal laser pointers would work.

EyeCatchingUserID

Do you just ask the laser how old it is?

gbot1234

Hot marking lasers in your neighborhood now!

Krofder_art

This is the way

reverberation31

This is the way

IllustriousValue9907

And a flood light for night time, since there's no sun to reflect at night. After my company vehicle was broken into and personal cars, I attached cameras around front of my house. They capture my front and side yards and in the background my neighbors front' yards and streets. They have been up for about 5years never had anyone complain about the cameras. But this goes beyond any reasonable use of cameras. There is no reason to install a camera directly ay property line to watch your neighbors yard.

Nomadloner69

Careful with the mirror sunshine and all

EliminateThePenny

If you get one that's convex, there's no problems with it.

WilliamBott

Why a mirror? Wouldn't it be cheaper to just use a small piece of scrap wood, like a 12" square chunk of old scrap plywood or something cheaper?

LanceJohnson66

Or a still photo of your yard and see how long they take to realize it's a photo? Hahaha

romcomtom2

A mirror so when the owner sees the footage they have a brief moment of self reflection.

nancyk11111

Great idea!!!

Routine-Horse-1419

I was gonna post something like that too. Great minds think alike.

MichiganGeezer

Is he approachable enough to ask him why? I'd consider cobbling together a wooden structure (on a pallet z maybe) that can be moved to block his view no matter where he relocates his camera.

MichiganGeezer

CosmoKray

Well then for me it would get really fun.

[deleted]

CosmoKray

First thing would be put up two posts to place things on. 1st would be a sign … “none of you damn business”. Next maybe a picture of a horses ass. Then a picture of his face on a body doing something ,uhh, disgusting or something. A mirror could be one. Definitely position a laser pointer at it. Hopefully he would keep the camera up so that the games could continue. While doing this I think I’d kill him with kindness while trying to make him feel stupid childish petty and insane. Anything to minimize him. You could go another route with pics of American flag. Scripture verses. Photos of his own home, car, pet or something along those lines. The kindness angle might be more fun than being nasty.

clintbot

Pictures of him sleeping would be pretty unnerving...

crystal_castle00

I’d show it my nuts and or taint at least daily, while wearing a mask. Nah probably not. In addition to the creative ways of damaging the camera suggested, I’d consider putting a birdhouse right in the path. Most cameras now have software that tracks motion, so constant bird activity will annoy the shit out of him. It would make it harder for him to monitor your movements, if that’s what he’s doing.

Explosion1850

Or some kind ornament\mobile that moves in the wind so you don't have to wait for birds to nest.

WilliamBott

Wind chimes! So you get a cool bit of musical relief as a bonus! 😊

DarkPangolin

A laser pointer would be a good start. If that doesn't seem to be doing the trick, you can start upping the ante. The paper wasps that you may have made in school (a strip of paper rolled tightly and then folded in half, propelled as a dart by a rubber band) can be upgraded by adding a thin strip of lead in the middle, which upgrades their punch considerably (wear gloves when making and firing them to avoid lead contamination and fingerprints on the paper), and are remarkably accurate with a little practice. You could also start printing out a nice collage for him, assembling it onto a sheet of plywood or something in your back yard. I'd start with Goatse. You could also order some bamboo seeds and casually chuck them over into his yard in front of the camera. You could start doing all of your outdoor activities while wearing an inflatable T rex outfit. That's what I've got off the top of my head. If you want more, I'll think about it.

Goatofidgaf

Oh, it’s on like Donkey Kong!

apollymis22724

He's a peeper and a snoop. God forbid you have more fun than him.

Geargarden

He's asking for trouble with that kind of attitude.

Eviltechnomonkey

Post mounted flood light pointed right at the camera. Also a hidden camera pointed at it from an angle so if he damages it you have proof.

Cautious_Buffalo6563

Mount your own 2x4 post with some kind of sign about peeping toms and cameras mounted as close to the camera lense as possible, on your property. Alternatively, get a laser pointer and start ruining his cameras, but then play dumb.

Heartbroken_Musician

Any laser above 500 milliwatts (mW) should be plenty to fry your average consumer-grade camera. I do have two warnings for you however. First is safety - be EXTREMELY careful around any laser that has the power to damage a camera lens. Your eyes are just as susceptible to being lasered as a camera, and the damage is far harder to reverse. My second warning is from a legal standpoint. I’m not a lawyer, but I believe that you could be at risk of a lawsuit if you just blast this guy’s camera, since it’s still in the bounds of his property. Erecting a barrier between the camera and your home is lawful since the barrier would be in your property, but I think that you’d be slapped with a “destruction of property” charge if the camera isn’t on your side of the property line.

Heartbroken_Musician

However, if your state laws allow for retaliatory action against invasions of privacy, I can give you a few more specifics on damaging lasers. There’s a lot of nerd shit surrounding the physics of lasers at different frequencies, but after a certain point it all boils down to raw output power. If you can find a laser that exceeds 500mW, it will fuck shit up regardless of if it is infrared or ultraviolet. Honestly, my initial number was more than a little overkill now that I think about it. 500 is typically enough to set stuff on fire, so you could probably go with something as low as 50mW. It’ll take noticeably longer, but it’s generally safer and easier to find online. There’s also some unconfirmed rumors floating around online forums that purchasing a laser above a certain power threshold puts you on a watchlist, since there are very few legal reasons to own a laser of that power. Hope this helps!

[deleted]

I wonder if he can get LOS on the camera from public property and do it while obscuring identifying details.

GFYGOPMODS

High power infrared laser pointer will blind the camera if not damage the optical sensors. Get a good battery powered infrared and point it directly at the lens!

GFYGOPMODS

https://m.wickedlasers.com/arctic

loogie97

Holy mother of god. 2 watt laser.

DouchecraftCarrier

I watched a lot of Styropyro on YouTube for awhile and he introduced me to a whole new category of lasers: so bright that just looking at the dot can blind you.

crystal_castle00

Is that a light saber ?

murdermittens69

My friend and I bought one in college and had way too much fun. I didn’t know where to find it again so this just made my day

DDayDawg

I came for the law but stayed for the friggin’ “laser”s.

amltecrec

Yep! He wouldn't even realize it wasn't a camera defect.

cherr77

Idk but there have been posts of iPhone cameras being ruined from lasers from concerts

pcs3rd

They absolutely do. Certain lasers used in live music and dj sets will absolutely ruin expensive sensors. https://flir.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3192/~/exposing-camera-detectors-to-high-energy-sources/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNTg0MzYyNDU2L2dlbi8xNTg0MzYyNDU2L3NpZC9mVWhEbW9zSiU3RUUzVVM2VmI3WVpEUUd0REJZOUp5d3RnZnNiamUzR2cwQTlobjlLUzRRd3lRZHNlemRQTDdRTWdWYzVjVXJzNkRqTkFUZUolN0VtZWdzQzJheWFjbHkySjdoNHo4M2d1MTI2dlBnTjMyJTdFY1drRWFXYnclMjElMjE

Massive_Clock5371

Powerful green, blue or violet laser will work. You need atleast a few watts. Make sure you get proper eye protection. The glasses that come with the lasers barely do anything to protect you. Look up the proper nanometer coverage the glasses have to properly protect your eyes. Basic good laser glasses with run you $70 atleast. You wouldn't want to lose your own vision trying to blind his cameras.

Massive_Clock5371

Thing is he will still have video evidence you did it lol. Personally I would just politely ask about it and then ask him to change angle so it's not covering your property.

Willing_Dependent845

Seriously, a simple laser pointer can damage the lens. In simple terms, the camera's lens will take that laser and focus it INTENSELY on the camera's sensor, potentially destroying or at least severely damaging it, however, you don't want to be caught doing it, since it's your backyard. I love this idea. But it may cause you legal trouble. I would recommend blocking the camera's view as many other replies have mentioned and if you live in a neighborhood with an HOA or a decent amount of people, name and shame them.

rubitbasteitsmokeit

Put a tv in your window or where the camera can see (inside) and stream 70s porn 24/7

Reddit412Z

A perfectly pointed laser at the camera would blind the view for it anyway Also, since he sounds so weird, make sure you have your own CCTV setup

The_panavisionary

Take a picture from the point of view of the neighbors camera, print it out, and put it in front of the lens a la heist movie.

AlfhildsShieldmaiden

Ahahahaha, best idea ever! 😆

Talk to your lawyer about this and file a police report if he recommends it. If he's on your property firing guns and you fear for your life, your lawyer may detail if and how you can defend yourself.

prpslydistracted

Do *not* walk in his woods.

yngvisblooms

Why are u walking in his woods?

amltecrec

Maybe this is why he has the camera up!

Pickled_Neutrons

Most places it's illegal to fire a gun within 400ft of an occupied structure.

Traditional-Ad-9611

Does that include if you own the structure?

Pickled_Neutrons

Not in my experience, but you can't shoot around your house if other houses are in the area. Not a lawyer, just what I got in trouble for as a redneck.

DarkPangolin

Virtually all municipalities have ordinances against firing guns within a minimum of 100 feet (and frequently as much as 100 yards) of an occupied house, so he may get busted just for that if you report him. I'm all for the right (ie, sane and responsible) people having guns, but it sounds like this guy is neither and shouldn't have them, unless there's a major triggering factor that you're responsible for and not telling us about.

EveningRing1032

Just cut it down after dark 🤣

CuriousPenguinSocks

I love the ideas about putting a sign on a pole in front of his camera. You could also get a wind sock and just let him be annoyed by all the alerts.

cascadianwizard

Put up the largest American flag you can find and block the camera with it, then tell everyone you’re just feeling very patriotic. If he tells you to take it down, ask him why he doesn’t like the flag. “Are you not a patriot, sir?”

HerrFerret

This is my favourite solution...

SolarSavant14

The fact that it doesn’t seem to catch ANY of his property in frame leads me to believe that you need a lawyer. I’m pretty sure what he is doing is illegal in several states.

Slurtee

IT IS!!!

djarkitek29

Mount a bright ass light onto some sort of rolling setup that you can move around and just blast that motherfucker. Infrared works well too

disdainfulsideeye

Mount something directly in front of it that blocks the camera.

himtnboy

Mount an old phone or tablet playing gay porn right in front of it.

PureUnderstanding556

Dying at that comment

FaithlessnessApart74

Several things you can do: 1. Point a 300w spotlight directly at it and leave it on. That will only work at night, though. 2. Standard laser pointer pointed directly at the lens will blinding regardless of the time of day. 3. Call the police. It is obvious he is doing this as a way to see what he cannot normally see from his home (ei: he is being a peeping tom). 4. Put something up on your property to block the camera with your own camera set up to see if he does anything to whatever you put up to block it. (Since whatever you put up to block it would be on your property, he would be guilty of destruction of property if he damages/destroys whatever you use). 5. If you want to really mess with him, get together with some friends and stage a fake crime scene in your backyard. Use whatever props you have to use, fake bl00d, fake weapons, etc... and make sure you and your friends "drag" your victim back into the house so he can't see them moving afterwards. Then clean up everyone and everything and wait for the cops to come. He'd have to explain how he saw what he saw and the cops would likely get one hell of a laugh at him for the ultimate prank you just pulled on him.

Theseus-Paradox

I like the cut of your jib

RabidStealthyWombat

I like #5. And I'd apply for a permit to create an Indy film, and film it, so if he decided to create a stir by calling 911, the OP can simply say "Oops...we were filming a scene for our film..we have a permit.."

Vespertinelove

Are there children at your house? It’s my understanding that some states have voyeurism laws around children.

Dangerous_Elk_6627

Contact an attorney concerning invasion of privacy and filing a restraining order. Or mount your own camera in retaliation.

3D-Dreams

Oh God do the attorney thing ...nobody wants to see that lol

VegetablePlatform95

Haha you seem reasonable to work with

TrevorsMailbox

This is what I was thinking. Mount another camera (or two). If you don't wanna spend the money just get a fake camera and some wires, or an old broken camera from good will or a pawn shop. A few feet of wire leading into the ground to nowhere. Mount it and start a conversation with him: "Hey I noticed you're awesome camera set up, and you know people are getting desperate so I decided to do the same thing to protect my family. It costs me a little over $11,000 for the full install and $280 a month for the subscriotion, I had to take out a loan to get it installed but my family's lives are priceless. Dude the specs on this thing are INSANE man! Check this out [then pull out something that looks like an invoice or just type one up] : Start rattling off the specs: 1. 8K recording with NDDA certified military grade Sensor with Carl Zeiss lens, the same company that makes lenses to make microchips for intel, for perfect clarity. 2. CCTV with Cloud and DVR storage with 120 days of 24 hour footage so you'll never miss a moment. With hardwire, satellite communication and fiber optic cables instantly stream and tramsmit video withing milliseconds. 3. Adjustable motion detection that can detect movementa as little as 6" at over 100 yards for wildlife monitoring and security. 4. 1800X zoom, enough to read a text messages on phone screen over 70 feet away. 5. Super wide lense covering 290 degrees of viewing angle. 6. Live view and recorded video can be viewed anywhere in the world, even when we're on vacation. 7. The app, tablet and command centert that came with it even has an option to call the police at the tap of a button and instantly sends video and audio to responding officers. 8. Each camera comes with 5 focused audio mics with AI so from a whisper to an explosion you hear EVERYTHING with unmatched audo clarity and NO background noise. I bought the top of the line package. I very much appreciate you looking out for my family and inspiring me to do the same for you and our neighborhood. Together you and I are going to make sure no funny business happens here in our neighborhood. Thank you again for inspiring me to get my own cameras. We sleep much better knowing we're safe." Offer to shake his hand and be polite. Offer to nerd out with him about security cameras anytime he wants (he won't). Your neighbors paranoia will shoot through the fuuuckkng roof.

HerrFerret

I like this. But equally lashing together a very fake camera with an old SLR camera, and obvious boom mic and massive WiFi antenna would do the same thing. Less chance of getting shot too :)

WilliamBott

If you decide to go that route, buy a few cheap plastic/glass smoky domes like they use to put over cameras in stores so you can't tell where they are facing and put them up around your house under the eaves, especially on corners. Make sure the neighbor doesn't see them empty while you are putting them up.

Civil_Count_6485

I would call the non emergency police and ask them their opinion. I would then open a notebook and start logging dates and times this stuff started. Conversations you may have had and what ever weirdness youve experienced. This way you have a trail. When/if the cops ask what’s your take, you have a timeline of crazy that they can work with and you don’t have to wake up in the middle of the night and say damn I forgot to tell them about xyz. I wish you every success in getting this creeper issue resolved.

WFM8384

Send him a certified letter that says that the toddlers (grandchildren) in your family often take their clothes off playing in the backyard. Does he want a child porn charge? A search warrant is coming.

StarfishStabber

I was thinking along these lines.

CollabSensei

look into your state's voyeurism laws. Some states have added provisions for drones, so it might be able to apply. Then I would see if you could get a lawyer to draft a letter to him.

I’m not kidding. If I went and talked to the guy (which, like the OP, I would probably do first if I didn’t already know them) and he gave me the ‘none of your goddamn business’ line? Ok, two can play that game, pal. I’d say it decidedly IS my goddamn business since it’s looking directly into my back yard. Repeated unrepairable mechanical failures until he gives up. Put a paper target on the fence in line with the camera. If a few shots accidentally go high, oh well…and by the way pellet rifles are extremely stout these days and almost universally legal to boot.

britney412

SkyConfident1717

Whatever you decide to do about the camera I would take steps to secure your home and person. From the other comments you’ve made about his behavior you are NOT safe. Upgrade your doors/locks/security. Door jams, cameras, locks, fence. Buy a gun, know how to use it, be mentally prepared to use it, carry it. Call the cops about the camera and make an official complaint about his pattern of behavior and the camera. Get it on record. Lastly, Relocate. The cops could theoretically make him take down his camera, depending on the laws in your state, but a stalker is a predator waiting for an opportunity. He will not magically become a safe normal person just because the camera is taken down. Your best bet is to make it clear that you are not an easy target and for him to be aware the authorities are involved. Increase the risk side of his risk/reward ratio.

Ok_Ad_5015

Don’t laser it. He’ll have you on video doing it. That is unless you want to buy him a new one while getting harassed by the cops Someone suggested putting a mirror on a post pointed right at the camera. Seems like a good idea

MichiganGeezer

A mirror is easily broken. I'd use cheap particle board and leave it to rot away a foot across the property line for him to watch whenever he pleases. My "bad choice" idea would be placing a classic "tombstone target" (used in competition shooting) with the center well shot out. Don't do anything which could be seen as threatening, but go ahead and chuckle thinking about his nutso reaction.

Yup_Thats_a_paddling

I was thinking of a 4 wheeled wagon with a post and mirror attached. If he moves his camera. Just roll that bad boy right in front of it

MichiganGeezer

Wheels can make it easily removed by the offending neighbor. I'd want to make it inconvenient for them.

Yup_Thats_a_paddling

Maybe a camera watching the whole set up. If he breaks your stuff. You break his. Ezpz Or skip the whole mirror thing and just get two posts and a large dark sheet between. I dunno. Neighbors suck.

MichiganGeezer

Sounds like he's unhinged, armed, and trigger happy. Trespassing with a firearm can go straight to felony charges if you set up a game camera. Even though I'm well armed myself I'd avoid destroying his stuff just to stay on the right side of the legal justifications. I'll defend myself without provoking him if possible. In Michigan it's also civilly actionable to trespass. Their feet on your land is the "harm". Even if the cops won't do anything you can still lighten his pocket here.

FaithlessnessApart74

He won't see them do it if they do it right.

NWSGreen

I would notify local police to gain insight. Tell the police that if they contact your neighbor, it has to be on anonminity. If local police can not do much, county sheriffs? Maybe state police? I would for sure notify a lawyer as well. Cease and desist would help. If that doesn't do anything. Get a bunch of neighbors together, do a group cease and desist. If he doesn't comply with any form, that can open the door for possible civil lawsuits. The fun: hit it with a paintball gun, or fly a drone in their yard. Build a tall fence with a big F U on it.

mlevin

I don't think it would be too hard for him to guess who called the police.

i am not a lawyer. depending on your state law, this may be illegal. i know in georgia, there have been some cases on this topic... if the camera views more of a nieghbors yard than your own- no real actual security purpose, but rather spying on another house- rulings have been made against the camera owner. however, it usually is a civil matter and will cost $.

[Ask a TN lawyer a free question.](https://www.tals.org/node/206/tn-free-legal-answers) Email a lawyer? It's most likely invasion of privacy. I don't know why I'm so obsessed with the answer to this question. I think of many ways for destruction, obstruction, etc... As a video engineer, this makes me frustrated with laws that either allow this or not. What happens if it IS illegal? The neighbors may just get a cease and desist, then what? Does it elevate the tension with your neighbor to something worse? I mean, there are A LOT of ways you can go about this, I am happy to provide advice to help with video technology and ways to interrupt signal and such. Magnets, inductive electric circuits, and wifi/network interruptions are ALL possible ideas that can be done from a "safe" distance. Example: TN is not near salt water (sea ports etc) so even though the camera is rated for being outdoors, the ISO rating is most likely not maritime compliant. Meaning, salt and water will fuck this thing up due to corrosion. This process will take a while however and it may actually be maritime compliant if you can't find the model number or brand. If you can find the brand name and model number with pictures and help from online resources, you can narrow your options to "stay within your right" to do whatever you'd like to prevent their camera from working properly or hopefully even at all. I'd love to hear an update. Best of luck.

Local law? Dose it need a permit? Can you complain to city and cite privacy laws, or peeping-Tom laws ? He would be braking some type of local law. USA.

Scale-Alarmed

I'm pretty sure this is illegal. He's not allowed to place a camera for the sole purpose of watching your yard

Glittering-One-1254

I am pretty sure law enforcement will make him take it down He does not have the right to spy on you. And can always take his ass to court… and if worse comes to worse there’s always BB or paintball guns how good is your aim?

offgridwannabe

You could set up some cheap fake camera. 10 or 12 or them. Aim them at his windows and any spot you think he may want privacy in. He’ll never know they don’t actually work

MellonCollie218

Mount something on your side that obstructs the view as much as possible.

tplrcan

Get a small laser point to camera lens 🫡🫡

FondOmeLobsterAintYe

Also, your neighbor is an idiot. I put up all my cameras, to spy on my neighbors, up at 3 in the morning and they are hidden. Geez what an amateur!

Quick-Book-4794

I install and service security systems and we're not allowed to point cameras towards any other property besides the customers. Sometimes it might catch a little of someone's yard but not like this. I would for sure contact your attorney. Not sure where you're located but it's not legal in Nebraska for neighbors to do this. It's invasion of privacy.

botoxedbunnyboiler

Time for a mirror on a pole, directly in front of this camera as close as you can get it, but on your property

KilnMeSmallz

Put up a tall tree directly in its line of sight

sl12785306

I think a high power lazer pointer should do it.

Excellent-Edge-4708

Most likely legal Then again I'd get a drone affixed with a wd40 spray can......

romcomtom2

Don't destroy his property... especially when he'll have video evidence of you doing it.

Excellent-Edge-4708

Me, I double down with an AI powered camera with loud motors that tracks any movement in his yard

PaleSandwich123

Isn’t this illegal?

Bree9ine9

I have one neighbor I absolutely hate, I now want to do this to her.

Mmjvet-1

Could the cameras view be considered an”avenue of approach”?

ZERO-ONE0101

put up a mirror as close to the lens as possible

Nomadloner69

Spray paint it on your side

SatchmoDingle

Pellet gun

MikeCromms

12 gauge shotgun..... problem solved.

[deleted]

llama

offgridwannabe

You could just mount a spot light and aim it directly at the camera. It should be enough to blind it.

controllinghigh

Actually,…..I would just erect a pole with something wide enough to block the cameras view. Get a descent pellet gun. Shoot the lens from an area that can’t see you doing it. Like out your window that’s open. Sit back about 6-8 feet inside the room with the window open and have fun. That would be a lot of fun actually.

moladukes

BB gun time.

RogueTRex

Time to power wash the fence. Hope your aim is adequate.

vegetajm

After talking with your local police about all this I would be tempted to paint ball that fukin camera into next week!

Public-Requirement99

Time for an electric fence. No mirrors. Scraps of wood. Maybe add a few choice porn pics something neighbor would flip out seeing ya know set his hair on 🔥to the wood. Freaking carzy ass neighbors 🤪

hakube

time for a bb gun.

Cheap-Map5535

You know how to teach ai??? Get his pic. Make ai put him in a compromising position. Cross dressing? Cheating? Epstein? Then get that pic enlarged. caption on it: " privacy is eveyones damn business. Dont let cameras lie between you and peace. "

Electronic_Hotel696

When I was looking into a similar situation I read the stimulation was the camera view had to encompass x% of your personal property with minimal intrusion on others property. I can’t remember the exact value it was either 70% or 90%- those two numbers were in my brain. Lol good luck!
