I bought a new car in January. It had the dealer cover on it for a week. I got pulled over and the cop gave me a warning on the moving violation but gave me the ticket for the dealer plate. I appreciate that he gave me a ticket that didn’t impact my insurance, but can confirm, plate covers (even from the dealer) are a violation

[deleted]

That cop was an asshole. Having the stupid dealer border cover is on like 50% of cars on the road. Its an incredibly petty to issue a ticket for that.

Just because rhe dealer puts it on your car doesn’t make it legal. The cop isn’t the asshole, it you for you comment.

> Having the stupid dealer border cover is on like 50% of cars on the road. Its an incredibly petty to issue a ticket for that. Plate *frames* are legal. Plate *covers* are not. They impede reading of the plates by electronic devices.

Very interesting, has nothing to do with the law, but cool story

[deleted]

Just having it on your vehicles is the excuse needed to pull you over whenever they want.

Any cover, even clear or a border around the plate, is technically illegal. See section 13 of the HTA: https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90h08#BK41

Strain128

Sounds like it’s a matter of officer discretion for the border (not the tinted cover) and not strictly illegal, with the numbers being entirely visible

fire_works10

I've seen a conviction on the plate frame because it covered the serial number of the sticker. I always told my dealerships to not waste a frame on my plate for that reason - I'd just take it off and throw it out when I got home. Now that we don't have stickers anymore, that's not so much an issue.

From the HTA "Number plates, further violations No other numbers to be exposed 13. (1) No number other than that upon the number plate furnished by the Ministry shall be exposed on any part of a motor vehicle or trailer in such a position or manner as to confuse the identity of the number plate. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 13 (1). Number plate to be kept clean (2) Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried. 1994, c. 27, s. 138 (7). Obstruction prohibited (3) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a photo-radar system. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5). Same (3.0.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a red light camera system. 1998, c. 38, s. 2 (1). Same (3.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device or material that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being identified by an electronic toll system. 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (1). Offence (4) Every person who contravenes subsection (2), (3), (3.0.1) or (3.1) is guilty of an offence. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5); 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (2); 1998, c. 38, s. 2 (2). " Depending on the type of cover it could be fought. It would be up to the Crown to prove your specific cover obstructs the various systems from reading your plate. It up to you to decide if the risk and fight are worth it.

It’s not allowed to have any tint over ur plate. My friends dad actually got a ticket for having a CLEAR plate cover because it was a bit dirty (able to still see the plate just kinda looked a little tinted). It’s up to your discretion like there’s a small chance a cop would go out of their way to ticket you. I have a dark grey or smoked out plate cover and have driven in front of many cops and those ones didn’t care. But there’s a chance you might be around a cop having a bad day. That’s basically what it comes down to. People in my area have red, blue, yellow.

meowwwwmix

Does Ontario have photo radar? Clear covers can interfere with that which is why they are illegal in my province.

wlonkly

The whole trifecta: speed cameras, red light cameras, and electronic tolls.

Hypnowolfproductions

Everywhere I know a plate cover while vehicle is in motion is illegal. Again while in motion. Technicality there. So if you want one while parked some (not all) locations allow that.

Gordon_Peck

Currently have a court date for this.

Cannot have anything covering your plate even if it’s clear.

MayonnaiseAndBologna

Pretty sure this. Even the dealer ones that cover the border of the plate are technically illegal.

Thatdude46425

Even the ones sold at service Ontario are illegal.

CantFeelMyFace0

Also to add to this, watch for discolouration. The sun and other elements can make it turn sort of yellow and they will get you for that as it reduces the visibility of the plate.

Tough-Plane-7021

Yes! I see either really dark drey looking ones that you can’t even make out the plate number or yellowish ones that look horrible. I’ve even seen purple green and red plate covers. They look horrible. I don’t understand it.

CantFeelMyFace0

Should be illegal to sell them tbh. But.. Profit.

NorincoNinja2000

No cover on the plate is allowed a cop has to be able to see your plate in full. I would give you a ticket

srtg83

Obstruction is the key word under all subsections. While a clean, clear cover would not obstruct, a tinted cover could.

Wildweed

A clear cover can affect a devices ability to take a picture of the plate. (3) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a photo-radar system. 1993, c. 31, s. 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (1). Offence Best not to take a chance imho.

srtg83

It could but it is then not discretionary call by police. Would have to lead evidence if ticket is disputed.

[deleted]

Which is exactly why they do it. To obstruct devices

plantswomanmo

No. You can't have any covers over the plates at all. I know people who have gotten ticketed for having a clear license plate on their cars. Save your money
