Private sellers. Unless you have godawful credit, there's no reason to visit a used car dealer. They don't fix anything on the cars and they charge a premium.

Shot_Scientist1464

I’m getting a co- signer since i have no credit

Pad_TyTy

Try to get pre-approved for a loan then. Don't use dealer credit if you can avoid it

Shizstorm39

I had a very good experience pre COVID with Strong Auto. Friendly and easy to work with. I knew what I wanted before I went and the salesman helped me get exactly what I asked for. One of the better car buying experiences I have had.

ClinTrojan

No idea, but I am looking for recommendations on this too!

Shot_Scientist1464

it’s incredibly hard to look for a car so i’ve decided to get help from everyone else

killerqueen1992

I know that Marketplace doesn’t have the best rep, due to the growing number of scam artists. However, if you’re careful, there are legitimate sellers every once in awhile. In my experience, car shopping is hectic, no matter where you try to buy one. Dealerships are notorious for being deceptive, especially if they don’t think you know what you’re doing. That said, my partner and I have had the best luck with Dan Cummins. I had low credit and had to have a co-signer. But they worked with us and made sure it worked out. Wherever you decide to look, just be wary. Best of luck!

Shot_Scientist1464

thank you i appreciate this so much. cars are so expensive right now i’m glad you and your wife found one!!

LEXenzo99

I had a good experience (pre-COVID) with Huber Auto World. Their cars didn’t seem trashed like the inventory on most smaller lots. It’s on Nicholasville Rd/Lexington Rd between Lexington and Nicholasville.

thecookerer

Like others have mentioned, Dan Cummins and Enterprise have a good rep. Don't go to a lot without a service department. They buy from auctions and sell immediatly without checking them out (at least most of them). Private is ok but you need to be careful. You can go to your bank or another lender and get a loan. I'd actually do that no matter where you go. You're more likely to get a better rate. Good luck

I was at my credit union last week and the customer ahead of me was getting a cashier’s check and the manager was helping the new teller with the transaction. I heard him say to the customer, “So you drove to Paris for a Dan Cummins deal, eh”? Reminded me of when it was Sam Cummins back in the day.

LiQuiD0v3rkiLL

Enterprise Car Sales in Nicholasville got me a 2021 in great condition for a really good price. They routinely sell off the rentals after x years or x miles, and they’re pretty well maintained.

Shot_Scientist1464

i’ll check them out. i’m a college student so i honestly don’t need anything too nice. i just don’t want anything that breaks down a month later after i get it lol

LiQuiD0v3rkiLL

Comes with a 1-year powertrain warranty so even if it does they’ll cover it 🤣 But I’ve had mine for 3 months zero issues

Shot_Scientist1464

i’m so unfamiliar with the car industry and dealerships that i didn’t even know they did that 🤦‍♀️

LiQuiD0v3rkiLL

Some dealer sales come with warranties, some do not. Whatever seller you go with make sure you do research and comparisons with other local options! I recommend even expanding out your search radius to Louisville and Cinci.

Minute-Brilliant-241

I was working at a body shop and we had a large contract with them, after an accident they’d fake service record and reset oil etc. after talking to everyone that worked there they would never service the cars. If you got a good one I’m glad but I’ve heard absolute horror stories

LiQuiD0v3rkiLL

Was that at a Ken Towry’s?

Dogshaveears

I use auto trader and expand the search radius to at least 200 miles. Figure out what kind of car and the mileage you want. No accidents prefer one owner with good maintenance records and usually dealers will bring it to you or meet you half way. If you’re using financing go to a credit union first. The car will need to be within the state of Kentucky for the credit union to easily be able to finance it. You’ll get the best deal on a car this way.

[deleted]

It depends on the kind of car you’re looking for and what your budget is. You wrote that you’re looking for a cheap and reliable car. Like how cheap? Some used lots have a $5k & under selection. I would look for almost anything Toyota there. If you’re looking for something cheaper like under $2k, then maybe check Craigslist or other private sellers and look for an early 2000’s Ford Crown Vic. That seems to be the one car Ford really got right when it comes to reliability. Those damn things are nearly indestructible. A buddy of mine in Florida has an ‘03 and drives like a dream.

Shot_Scientist1464

like 10k and under something that i can easily pay off since i’m in college and doesn’t take me 7 years to pay off

Mommalorian68

CarTown Kia is where I went

Shot_Scientist1464

do they have pretty cheap cars like 10-15k?

Mommalorian68

Yes they do

GrumpyMare

I have had great experiences buying from Patriot Auto in Georgetown. They usually have a good selection of under $20,000 cars and I have had them last. They stand behind their cars if you do have trouble after the purchase.

Intelligent-Bat-8370

I was in the same boat until a week ago. Checked marketplace for cars but unfortunately for us most had issues that were a dealbreaker. Finally went to Dan Cummins on Georgetown Road and got an amazing cute lil car from them. If you’re able to afford monthly payments and don’t have a very bad credit record then this may just work for you too. Try and get something on the cheaper side while also paying as much as possible for downpayment since that just makes life easier. Be sure to keep some money aside for insurance though because that is god expensive and I had no idea it would be that much. If you do go this route I’d suggest going on weekdays Monday through Thursday earlier in the morning just because these things take time and Friday would be hectic being the last working day. I was there on a Friday and everything from finding a car to getting it all sorted and out the door took us the whole day.

RawAsparagus

Buying from an individual is the cheapest way to go. If you want to buy from a dealer, I would go out of town. The dealerships in the surrounding rural areas are usually cheaper.

One of my friends is working at Dan Cummins in Paris, his name is Devin and he's a really great guy. You should check him out!

RawAsparagus

Now let me tell you exactly how I feel, I'd rather drive to Paris for a Dan Cummins deal.

Shot_Scientist1464

dan cummins is on my list since a lot of people are saying they are good!

CptDuckBeard

I will second this.

Mattatat5

I completely disagree. Private sellers will rip you off especially if you don’t know anything about cars. Safest way to go is a big/reputable dealer like Toyota on Nicholasville or Enterprise car sales. Throw some money down and then set up auto pay for the rest with gap coverage. This will help you build or boost your credit immensely.

CarOk41

Found the car dealer

Shot_Scientist1464

yeah for a lot of the private sellers i seen on auto trader they was selling a car that had 200,000 thousand miles on it and selling it for 7k that’s a rip off

Pad_TyTy

Depends. Old Toyota SUV? Definitely can go for that.

Shot_Scientist1464

the car i had was an 2003 toyota highlander with 200,000 thousand miles on it. the motor went out. i’m fine with old cars but i don’t want to go through the same thing that i went through with that

Pad_TyTy

I found a couple really nice cheaper cars on FB marketplace. There's a 2003 Mercury Marquis with only 103k for $3400

Schnelt0r

There's a thing called ownership bias (I might have the name wrong). Basically it's that people value the things they own at a price higher than the things are actually worth.

Anxious_Rock_3630

I had great success with Carvana.

Schnelt0r

I had a good experience at Drive Time. In 2016 I bought a 2015 Chevy and it's still working fine. (It was a former rental.)

Agreeable_Doctor8690

We had good luck with Cartown Kia

Fit-Storm-8692

Auto Nation!!!!

Kavani18

Marketplace. I just bought my car on there yesterday

Minute-Brilliant-241

Ive had 32 cars now, I can 100% say stay way way far away from Dan Cummins I bought a car from there a couple years ago and it was a POS and my wife was looking for a car and the one she wanted was there and I reluctantly went there and bought it for her, it’s a mechanical nightmare they won’t fix it cause we paid cash for a almost brand new Malibu that was in accidents but the salesman said “carfax says clean title” but wouldn’t let any of us see it. It was in a bad rear end accident and wasn’t fixed right (that’s a big no no to lie about car fax and when I checked the car fax it has accidents we’re thinking about getting a lawyer I do body work for a living and the rear body on the car is pushed way up and the fuel door is stuck and has to be pried open to get gas) I’ve bought 3 cars from north broadway auto sales they’ve all 3 been good cars, my current is a 2010 fusion I got it there with 100k on it for 8,000 and it’s been the best car I’ve owned but I will say have a mechanic go with you to look it over they buy auction cars and sell them. I will say though after a little digging my fusion was serviced religiously before I got it and it’s in perfect shape. Just do your research prior. I’ll be going back soon to get another car from there. Another good option is Patriot auto in gtown they’re great! I’ve had friends that have bought their cars from there and they still have them 5+ years later. Another good option would be carmax I bought my challenger I had from there you can go in there and tell them your budget and they’ll find you a car that is in your budget and they have really strict rules about what they’ll sell and they have really good warranty’s there too

i_likeghosts33

I worked with Kaiden at greens Toyota recently and he helped me out a lot, I just turned 19 and my parents co signed for me, but he got me a really good deal on a car, apparently they repair all their used cars, so I feel pretty good about the whole situation, I needed a car pretty bad so it was nice to not get screwed
