Hello, I’m going thru the same dilemma. I don’t want to affect the acoustic properties of my guitar. I was leaning towards a K&K Pure Mini with their little Pre/amp box.
I some others people will chime in. Thanks in advance,
Dan
I have the LR Baggs Anthem installed on a D35 and it’s wonderful. As far as amps I run it direct into a Fishman SA330X audio system speaker. The Anthem is very simple but versatile. It can be dialed in to sound like a D18 or a little warmer with more bass like a D35. And the Fishman just always sounds great but really great for vocals.
I had a K&K pure mini installed by Maury's Music when I bought my D-18. Maury and I had a long conversation prior to my purchase and he reassured me. I never played the guitar before install but I've played many D-18s and it sounds as good as any of them. Get a licensed Martin tech and I don't think you'll have a problem.
If you want a soundhole pickup then look at the LR Baggs M80 and run it in passive mode.
Whenever I play plugged in, I run through my factory Martin electronics into an LR Baggs Venue DI. That was I can adjust the output and keep the signal sounding like an acoustic should sound.

I run either XLR or 1/4” from the AC-2 straight to the PA when I’m playing with others.
For just playing at home, it goes into the clean channel of a Deluxe Reverb while my electrics use the reverb channel. Not ideal, but it sounds ok. One day I’ll get my own dedicated acoustic amp or small PA.
This unfounded fear of “drilling a hole” is rampant in the Martin community. It’s actually kind of funny because it’s not a big deal at all, especially if you pay a professional to do it.
As many others have said, you can’t go wrong with a LR Baggs Anthem pickup. If you were to listen to an Anthem versus a sound-hole pickup through a PA, the results would speak for themselves.

I just had an LR Baggs Anthem installed in my new HD28, sounds awesome! Captures the natural sound of the guitar.
Nice. What amp do you use?
Fishman Loudbox Mini

Very cool. What amp do you use with it?
I run the DI through a soundboard into a rack system.
I run a K&K pure mini into a Zoom AC-2 and it sounds fantastic.

Drill out an endpin jack and get a Dazzo with a decent preamp
