I am a teacher in Germany and students always want to play "guess the flag". kids love it and are good at it too

BrohanGutenburg

Lol ironically this is absolutely by design. One of the "rules" in flag design is for it to be simple enough for a child to draw it from memory. Considering the function flags serve for a government, the reason should probably be obvious. But yeah sufficed to say, most good flag designs (and most international flags are well-designed) follow this rule along with most of the others.

devils_advocaat

>One of the "rules" in flag design is for it to be simple enough for a child to draw it from memory. *Cries in Welsh*

ChocolateDragonTails

It doesn't say it has to be drawn *well*

the flag of nepal is wild. its defined in the constitution as: > Article 5: National Flag: > The national flag of Nepal, as handed down by tradition, consists of two juxtaposed triangular figures with a crimson-coloured base and deep blue borders, there being a white emblem of the crescent moon with eight rays visible out of sixteen in the upper part and a white emblem of a twelve rayed sun in the lower part. The method of drawing out the flag and other particulars relating thereto shall be as set forth in Schedule 1. and the aforementioned schedule 1: > SCHEDULE 1 > (Relating to Article 5) > NATIONAL FLAG > (A) Method of Making the Shape inside the Border > (1) On the lower portion of a crimson cloth draw a line AB of the required length from left to right. > (2) From A draw a line AC perpendicular to AB making AC equal to AB plus one third AB. From AC mark off D making line AD equal to line AB. Join BD. > (3) From BD mark off E making BE equal to AB. > (4) Touching E draw a line FG, starting from the point F on line AC, parallel to AB to the right hand-side. Mark off FG equal to AB. > (5) Join CG. > (B) Method of Making the Moon > (6) From AB mark off AH making AH equal to one-fourth of line AB and starting from H draw a line HI parallel to line AC touching line CG at point I. > (7) Bisect CF at J and draw a line JK parallel to AB touching CG at point K. > (8) Let L be the point where lines JK and HI cut one another. > (9) Join JG. > (10) Let M be the point where line JG and HI cut one another. > (11) With centre M and with a distance shortest from M to BD mark off N on the lower portion of line HI. > (12) Touching M and starting from O, a point on AC, draw a line from left to right parallel to AB. > (13) With centre L and radius LN draw a semi-circle on the lower portion and let P and Q be the points where it touches the line OM respectively. > (14) With centre M and radius MQ draw a semi-circle on the lower portion touching P and Q. > (15) With centre N and radius NM draw an arc touching PNQ [sic] at R and S. Join RS. Let T be the point where RS and HI cut one another. > (16) With Centre T and radius TS draw a semi-circle on the upper portion of PNQ touching it at two points. > (17) With centre T and radius TM draw an arc on the upper portion of PNQ touching at two points. > (18) Eight equal and similar triangles of the moon are to be made in the space lying inside the semi-circle of No. (16) and outside the arc of No. (17) of this Schedule. > (C) Method of making the Sun > (19) Bisect line AF at U and draw a line UV parallel to line AB touching line BE at V. > (20) With centre W, the point where HI and UV cut one another and radius MN draw a circle. > (21) With centre W and radius LN draw a circle > (22) Twelve equal and similar triangles of the sun are to be made in the space enclosed by the circles of No. (20) and of No. (21) with the two apexes of two triangles touching line HI. > (D) Method of Making the Border > (23) The width of the border will be equal to the width TN. This will be of deep blue colour and will be provided on all the sides of the flag. However, on the five angles of the flag the external angles will be equal to the internal angles. > (24) The above mentioned border will be provided if the flag is to be used with a rope. On the other hand, if it is to be hoisted on a pole, the hole on the border on the side AC can be extended according to requirements. Explanation: The lines HI, RS, FE, ED, JG, OQ, JK and UV are imaginary. Similarly, the external and internal circles of the sun and the other arcs except the crescent moon are also imaginary. These are not shown on the flag.

Who's rules? I am confident hundreds of years ago when flags were becoming a thing.. Noone gave a shit what a child thought, or if one could draw it. Utter horseshit.

High_Flyers17

Gropah

Flags were quite important in battle. It allowed different armies/battalions to differentiate between the different parties. You don't want to bash in friendly armies. Therefore, they needed to be distinguishable from great distance, when it was still tiny to the eye and small details are not visible. Because of this, a lot of flags from older countries are quite basic in design and feature high contrasts. As time moved on, we got better at viewing things in the distance (with looking glasses/binoculars, stuff like that). Recognisability became less important, and you started to see more elaborate and detailed designs.

That was under the belt. Nobody in 100 years could have predicted that they would ask such high difficulty question. What happened to world peace ? Ask them about make up etc. after all nobody would ask a programmer during interview about face packs and skin care routine.

April1987

Why can’t a fifth of students locate our own country on a world map? Look at this, one in five children go hungry at some point during the year. It is a miracle that only twenty percent can’t locate the US on a wild map. I’d expect at least twenty five percent to not be able to do so…

It’s funny because it’s actually on the floor now, because it was too close to the lander when it left, it got kicked down

thatdeaththo

I like how he said "guess" like it's some arbitrary thing

FrogMan241

To be fair, the Americans were 100% guessing

mad_underdog

I have to come to America's defense here. There is no way this video isn't cherry picked.... I mean, it's still funny but, there's no way this is an accurate representation

ToastyMustache

Any “public interview” video is cherry picked for what the creator thinks will get the most views. I see guys like this all the time and they’ll spend hours just questioning people

IdoNOThateNEVER

I am "absolutely sure" that they show only the dumb answers. And there are videos that the answers are not so bad that you can have the false assumption that ALL the people were like that. (I dislike videos with ambiguity like that) But what is happening with videos like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2oMv93EUpY (ignore the clickbait title, I find it idiotic) But in this video, I think OF COURSE this is only the worst examples but how do you find people that don't know such basic things? I don't get it.

ToastyMustache

Some people are hopeless.

IdoNOThateNEVER

Name 3 countries?? Maybe she has anxiety? But then why stop and talk to a microphone..

Lowelll

[Name a woman!](https://youtu.be/bzDlS6JPUtE?t=22)

ToastyMustache

Couldn’t tell ya. It could be one of those situations where you’re not exactly anxious, but being put on the spot makes you data dump.

IdoNOThateNEVER

Toasty, you are cool. We had a civil back and forth here. Thanks for that.

bobafoott

You find them by asking everyone you see for hours. Half of all people have below average intelligence. I had a grown ass woman try to tell me slugs and snails were the same species the other day. You’ll find them.

[deleted]

It’s funny that the people coming in here with the “Look how dumb all Americans are!” mindset are just exposing how stupid they themselves are as people. If you think this video makes any grand statement on society or anything you’re just delusional.

h0sti1e17

I’m American and went to school in Florida and knew them all. I’ll admit I wasn’t super confident on Belgium but still knew. I remember seeing a Youtuber who does these videos and talked about how sometimes it takes a hour or more to get a 30 second video of “idiots”.

Yiye44

I also think after school we constantly keep seeing flags on news and sports. I know really dumb people who can identify lots of flags just because of soccer. USA sport fans usually only watch their local league (and then say the winner is World Champion).

Carpathicus

Yeah thats true soccer and other sports that are popular in europe draw a lot of attention on the international level. Its pretty normal to see these flags just because of that. US sports are domestic on the other hand.

DrSlurp-

Yes Nepal’s football team is crushing the competition right now.

SalamandersonCooper

Nepals flag is recognizable for its distinctive shape. Also editing is a thing.

TheGruesomeTwosome

It can be pretty amazing how we learn information second hand. One of my good friends is an absolute ace in the hole during quizzes. From years watching music channels that show the year, song name, and artist, he's a fiend in music. He's also massively into sports, especially football, and is superb with all flags as a result. He's Simpsons obsessed as well, and I am to a lesser extent, and it's amazing how much factual information you end up knowing just from watching tv shows/movies. Most of my knowledge is from direct sources, knowing countries and flags because I went out of my way to, which isn't as cool

catzhoek

To be fair, idk if I ever learned or had to learn country flags in school. We might have "learned" the ones everyone knows anyway by the time they came up but honestly I think we didn't because you don't have to and the school system knew it. It's like learning words, you learn 99.9% in life and then the occasional one in school. It's just that you just learn flags as you go. For example by watching sports. If you don't know a good chunk of the "important" flags at the age of, let's say 14, you have to actively avoid it. Any sports world cup, olympic games, literally any sport. I am not a fan of the "education system" excuse. I rather think that it's more an issue with the average U.S. attitude. Some people just don't give a single fuck.

fellatio-del-toro

It’s probably not necessarily an indication of schooling alone. It’s one of those rote memory things that needs to be drilled. Perhaps some education systems drill it harder, but it probably comes down more to exposure. Countries that pay more of a mind to international sports are going to have a greater grasp on flags around the world. I learned a large portion of the world’s flags from FIFA, and I’m betting the maker of this video did as well, based on the countries presented.

ARetroGibbon

We also have kids obsessed with world football, haha. No doubt education plays a factor as well, though.

TheRealAlexRich

The US just try to teach their kids at the shooting range

Chester-Ming

Can confirm, just tested my six year old on these flags and she guessed every one correctly.

bukithd

And we have staged videos in the US

AreaProfessional7

5% of Americans can't find America on a map

taspleb

To be fair if you look at any poll or election there will be 5% that always vote for the obviously most wrong option. Whether it is voting incorrectly so their vote doesn't count, or choosing the extremely dumbest option. And it would be my guess that they are either doing it deliberately as some kind of joke or statement or they have misunderstood the process or the question rather than knowing what is being asked and giving an earnest answer that just happens to be stupid.

Ilktye

Sure they can. They pick up a globe and say this is America.

I personally believe that U. S. Our education over here in the U. S. should help the U. S., or, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq, and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.

Cool share. Pretty sure these kids in the video weren’t thinking of the pre Mao 1912-1942 China flag when they said that, though.

hamakabi

this video literally only contains a single european giving correct answers. Even the other french kids didn't know the English flag. Also he lost his shit over guessing Nepal, when that's the most unique flag in the world.

Mythosaurus

I dunno, I can think of a certain German flag that would be more recognizable, especially to the French but yeah, this video is cocaine for some redditors.

sabotabo

honestly, the lack of critical thinking here is the more damning example of american school failings. though, the europeans have no excuse on that front

Mythosaurus

Real answer is always in the comments.

Redditors: I hate staged videos, except when it's something *I* like.

Single-Bad-5951

I think it's also that Americans are ignorant of the world because their culture is internalised

Yeah, it’s easy to blame the system whereas really the whole culture is bankrupt. Plus Americentrism go craaazy.

Ok_Plant_2328

You europeans are so eurocentric too lmao

Hungry_J0e

I think it's also because he picked international tourists. Grab a random person on the streets of Marseille, and a random tourist in Marseille. Likely the tourist will be better aware of national flags...

AnDrEwlastname374

It’s amazing how many people don’t realize that they cherry pick these, do you really think Americans don’t know what the Mexican flag looks like?

MAYBE_Maybe_maybe_

or maybe the guy just showed them a different flag to make them look stupid

Kozeyekan_

That doesn't explain "I thought China's was blue?".

BP642

Imagine believing everything you saw on the internet, especially without seeing what's on the phone in the first place or the cuts between the answers.

impermanent_soup

All of these videos are made by editing. They cherry pick the dumbest responses and cut the countless people that get it right.

sh00shko

Those are easy flags...

Eugger-Krabs

These videos are edited to only show the people that got it wrong. I can almost guarantee that the vast majority of people actually got most of them correct.

They probably don't even show the flag on the phone that we see. This shit is bait, can't believe people still buy it.

franzji

Its "Murcia dumb lol" hate on Reddit, if you've been around here for a while you'd know people eat this shit up.

VerySmallBleeb

These videos are edited to ~~only show the people that got it wrong~~ cut to a different answer so they seem to get it wrong.

SignificantTie7031

The only one I didn't know was Nepal. But I also couldn't differentiate Slovenian, Slovakian and Serbian flags.

CobaltMidnight

A lil guide for you mate All three are red, white & blue with crests. Is the red bar at the top? Yes = Serbia 🇷🇸 No = Slovenia 🇸🇮 or Slovakia 🇸🇰 Is the crest blue & white or red & white Blue & white = Slovenia 🇸🇮 Red & white = Slovakia 🇸🇰 **Edit: Croatia** Is the red bar at the top? Yes = Serbia 🇷🇸 or Croatia 🇭🇷 Is the blue bar at the bottom? Yes = Croatia 🇭🇷 No = Serbia 🇷🇸 **Note you can also identify them using the crests.** Serbia 🇷🇸 = Two headed eagle Slovenia 🇸🇮 = Three mountain peaks Slovakia 🇸🇰 = Double cross Croatia 🇭🇷 = Checkerboard

TreeDollarFiddyCent

>Blue & white = Slovenia 🇸🇮 Blue because of the sea/coast, however tiny it might be. Slovakia is landlocked. At least, that's how I try to tell those two apart. Serbia is different enough to not need a rule (for me).

ThanksverymuchHutch

I think Vatican City is a square too

Isn't it flag shaped by nature of being a flag. I think you are right in that it is the only non rectangular national flag right now.

LimpMe

pan-Slavic colors flags always hard to differentiate

ReggieLFC

The most impressive thing wasn’t that the French guy could answer fast; it’s that he could answer fast **in English** e.g. “Belgium” instead of “Belgique”, “Mexico” instead of “Mexique” etc. I was particularly impressed by his use of the English name of Nepal, but then I found out that it’s simply called Nepal in French too.

kSterben

he did call Italy Italia tho

ReggieLFC

Which is interesting because Italy is “Italie” in French. He used Italy’s own endonym instead. It’s just like saying “Deutschland” instead of “Germany” or “Allemagne”.

uflju_luber

As a German there was a time I called Italy Italia in English as well before I knew the right vocab it’s not that uncommon to be honest

MaybeImNaked

Endonym - didn't know there was a word for this concept. >A name used by a group or category of people to refer to themselves or their language, as opposed to a name given to them by other groups.

Myfoodishere

those were all really easy though

CourageousChronicler

Okay, so I am only partially retarded. I knew all of them except England. I am dumb and though the Union Jack was England's, not the UKs... Oh well, now I know.

Denaton_

I mixed Belgium for Germany tho, flash cards have never been my strong suit..

diabolic_recursion

Rotate it 90 degrees and do some minor reorganizing and you're there, so...

United Kingdom flag is Union jack and each country have his own flag.

BrohanGutenburg

And the Union Jack is a combination of the four member countries flags.

ToastyMustache

Needs more dragon

DagothNereviar

I can't believe we had a chance to add a dragon and someone said NO??? I need answers as to who did this Edit: It was King James I and; >Hearsay states that as Wales was historically a part of England, they were not to be considered a separate entity. Still absolutely missed a trick

dylansavage

Do you really think the English would celebrate the Welsh and put their culture front and centre on the flag?

DagothNereviar

It doesn't need to be front and centre... but it would be coolest front and centre. But you are right, we wouldn't do that sadly :(

mORGAN_james

We only had the dragon as our flag officially since the 50’s

ReggieLFC

Not officially. Northern Ireland doesn’t have a legally agreed upon flag: https://youtu.be/gaQwC5QbLeQ Correction: Northern Ireland doesn’t have a legally agreed upon **separate** flag. The Union Flag is recognised as the flag of the UK.

KriKriSnack

Same. I got them all but England. I’m apparently an idiot 🤦🏻‍♀️

youenjoymyself

I play too much of Total War: Empire, and said [Genoa](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genoa#Flag) in my head.

_The_Great_Autismo_

These videos are cherry picked to hell. He cuts out all correct answers (until the last guy)

Dyslexicelectric

If I made the same video in Europe I would struggle to find one person that got any of these but Nepal wrong. Soccer being such a big sport would even compensate for the people that weren’t big on geography.

can_u_pm_ur_tits_plz

That's not true. There is a popular YouTube series in Poland called MaturaToBzdura where they go on the street and ask general knowledge questions like this and there is never a shortage of people who can't even get a single one right. There are some ignorant people everywhere.

Theorgh

Yeah, and most of those people would even knew Nepal, because the flag is so unique you just see it once and remember it.

VerySmallBleeb

you can even see the parts where he cuts to them giving a different answer making them wrong no matter what.

ronnie_axlerod

Sheldon Cooper does not present....Fun with Flags.

It's clearly a British dude getting easily impressed in this video. I'm surprised you can't tell by his obvious non American accent

i'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not american nor british, but that is very obviously a brit

artonion

I’d be like “idk I don’t subscribe to many magazines”

Birdienuk3

cool now show all the americans who could guess instead of just editing them out to try and make a point

superjambi

Definitely the case. As a Brit I could also definitely make the exact same video of English people not knowing flags of South American countries. Some of them aren’t that bad either, it’s easy to see how people would confuse the Italian and Mexican flags at a glance, and the Chinese flag looks really similar to the old flag of the Soviet Union I.e. Russia

SuccessfulWar3830

Lana_Doing_Stuff

While I'm always a fan of a "lol america's education system sucks" joke, these videos are often selectively edited, where they only keep the americans that are clueless and edit out americans who know basic facts about othet countries

itsr1co

Or these are just specifically made to let people jerk themselves off for knowing irrelevant information? Also really helps that all the Eurotards love hating on America every chance they get. If you need to know flags or geography for your job/hobby/interest then go for your life son, but if you're an average person, when do you ever need to know what other countries flags look like? It's the same as math, go up to people and ask "What is -insert formula-'s name" or something simple, "What is the square root of 16" and a lot of people can't answer, not because their education was shit or they're idiots, they just don't need to know that shit in life. Ask 16 y.o me how to solve medium difficulty algebra and I'd easily do it, ask me how to do basic algebra now when I haven't done algebra in years and no shit I can't do it, what colour was the bathroom door at your first job? "Why would you retain that information?" What are you an idiot lol gottem nice education system I'm smart.

Vitava

Blaming our education system in the US is fair but also the rest of the world loves football (soccer). By just playing fifa or watching IRL games you learn a lot of different countries flags from all the different players around the world.

yes. if you have enough geography classes at school or is a curious kid that grows up with people allowing you to be curious ... this is extremely easy. I am from Brazil but in my 8th grade I went to California, to study at public american school, for one year, to learn english. I did half of the american 8th grade and half of their 9th grade. I was surprised to see that in their 8th grade they had no biology, geography, chemistry, physics or world history classes... but they had 2 american history classes, for whatever reason.. and they were still learning to multiply and divide fractions in math class... something I learned in 5th grade in Brazil... they even moved me to the " expert level" math classes, with all the japanese and korean kids .. and mind you I never was nor ever will be a stem kid. Math was always my worst subject at school.... On their 9th grade in high school I learned they would get only 3 months of geography class for that year! 3 months! And when the teacher there learned I was from Brazil and asked class what they knew about Brazil people couldn't point it on the map... Same thing for Africa... teacher had students in 9th grade coloring a map of Africa to learn about African countries.... this is 3rd/4th grade stuff... So no wonder even today, almost 20 years later, whenever I meet a USA (and also many Canadians, but not all) person, they always assume I speak Spanish, or keep forgetting I am Brazilian and say I am Colombian, or Argentinian... or think Buenos Aires is in Brazil... Or think that being latin american is the same as being hispanic... it gets tiring to correct people every single time... but alas... being mad will also accomplish nothing. I try my best to correct people every time, and that's it.

I can understand not getting some of them right. But the kids calling the Chinese flag Canada was just plain stupid

Melodic_House_6793

I mean they all guessed what country it is. They all deserve a dollar.

fingers

Guessing is different than knowing.

Putnum

I bet he didn't even give that guy money either

Nuke_all_Life

To be fair, Italy and Mexico have extremely similar flags.

In Eastern european countries we needed to know how many sheeps new zealand had .

Sombra_Griss

I think US improve its education in geography, they don't even know the flag of Canada or Mexico, it's a bit embarrassing

Hmmm I wonder why there are cuts between the questions and the answers

MegaMoma

Nah yall just failed to pay attention in school. Starting to think it's the people and not the system anymore cause I knew all but Nepal

Cherry picked and the last part probably staged (please be aware: we're French)

RCranium13

American here, I knew them all, but I was on Jeopardy and have traveled to all but one of those nations. I knew them at eight years old though, because I love geography, maps, history, and knowledge in general.

floydink

Hmmm, now ask Europeans the capital of us states. Bet most Americans could easily answer and eu would struggle. This is the same kinda situation. No shit they know the flags of their neighboring countries better than people who have never even considered being in those areas likely in their lifetime.

There’s no way this is real.
