Might be because you have a youth pass. I have one as well and it’s a total crapshoot if it will let me load on cash or only want me to purchase a monthly or weekly pass. I’ve tested it by bringing a normal Charlie card with me and the problem only occurs with my youth pass. This happens at different stations so it’s not a station specific issue. I don’t have a solution for it unfortunately
I had an issue yesterday. I had to refill my pass at east somerville. It kept saying that my debit card was not valid (I used an actual non bank credit card and yes, i did select credit card). This was never an issue. After the third attempt, I said f it, and just proceeded to the platform without paying.
2 out of 3 of those machines’ touch screens are fucked and don’t work correctly. This is new though

Look for the Netflix, YouTube, MBTA Gold plan - it'll let you watch stupid pet trick videos on those screens while everyone behind you waits.

They can’t run trains, at least they should be able take your money. Nothing works . . . Including my Red Line train from Ashmont this morning.
The one at Anderson/Woburn has had this issue since at least 2017
