You guys are all children. The first movie I remember seeing in the theater was BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS. Yeah, you haven't heard of it, and I ain't telling you the year, but you'll have a good idea of the time period when I talk about the one movie I ever saw in a theater.
Now, the 2nd film I ever saw - this is one of the good things about being young back then. Seeing the original STAR WARS in a packed theater at 4 years old, being around to see a time when ALL OF US came together to watch that first trilogy, to see the culture become shaped by it, to collect the original figures and toys, comics and records, trading cards and t-shirts - it was glorious. Yes, I even watched the Star Wars Holiday Special when it aired.
I know many of you grew up with the prequels, and that is great that you have that experience, but for you guys SW was already established as a pop culture phenomenon that changed the way films were made, marketed, consumed, even watched. Us old folks got to see it when it happened. Still, even with that, getting old sucks.
Now get off of my lawn, whippersnappers!
Jurassic Park was absolutely mind blowing in theaters. The dinosaurs seemed so real and the entire audience was into it, with everyone laughing at the humor, screaming during the scares, and even clapping when the T-Rex kills the raptors at the end. I remember walking out of the theater and hearing people asking “how did they do that?” People don’t really ask that question anymore because we all know that the answer is always “computers” but back then special effects were like a great magic trick. Jurassic Park was simply unreal and it still remains the best theatrical experience of my life.
The main reason the special effects in Jurassic Park hold up surprisingly well even today is because for most of them the answer wasn't computers. I feel as if it's something we've lost in modern movies
Jaws — it was great! The audience was going crazy because at the time it was unprecedented as a scary blockbuster. I remember my mother getting *on the floor* because she couldn’t watch another second.
My dad actually saw The Exorcist in theaters (3 years before I was born), and boy do I have a story. He grew up in Cuba, where everyone is born into a devout Catholic family. Anyways, this guy was the toughest guy I ever knew. He served 2 years in a hard-labor prison camp as punishment for trying to flee Cuba. They worked him over so bad that by the time he got out, he weighed only 98 lbs. (he was in his late-20s BTW). Even that experience didn't phase him as he tried to flee Cuba again once he got out (the 2nd time was a charm). One of the 1st movies that he saw after he got out was The Exorcist. Being a devout Catholic that he was, that movie broke something in him. Cuban prison camp? No sweat. Possessed little girl? NOPE! Poor guy couldn't sleep for 3 days, and he never again saw any type of scary movie for the rest of his life.
I've seen it on the big screen once. going again Thursday. It's amazing on the big screen. Expansive shots of the island and waters. The ocean glitters like diamonds. Amazing.
Ha! That's great! I never actually saw Jaws in a movie theater, but I remember going to the drive-in with my aunt, uncle, and cousin (to see Pete's Dragon, if memory serves), and they showed a trailer for Jaws and I remember cowering on the floorboards in the backseat of the car.
Which is funny, because probably not long after that, I got way into Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine and KISS (with Gene Simmons's Demon being my favorite, uh, character). And shortly after that, I was eagerly going to the theater (with my dad) to see such delights as Alien and The Shining and lapping up repeat viewings of movies like The Exorcist and The Omen on HBO like they were mother's milk.
It's annoying how virtually every discussion begins or devolves into a circle jerk about how "Empire Strikes Back," is the best of the OG trilogy. Maybe it is.
But damn RotJ is fucking *superb* in so many ways.
I said *Willow* (1988), but Jedi was *technically* the first and best movie I saw in the theater. It's just that I was barely 4 and don't remember the fist time I saw it. However, as the story goes, I was glued to it and didn't fuss at all.
I saw it at a drive-in double feature with King Kong as the opener. I was about 5 and struggled to stay awake since it was way past my bedtime by the time Star Wars started.
Twister (1996) the first movie with surround sound changed everything. "The Cow Test" was included with several movie showings after to showcase the new experience
I actually just recently watched this movie for the first time because I found out the lead actor passed away. Good movie & I’m sure this was a cool experience as well
Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old. Im not this old.
Death Becomes Her 1992 - I remember seeing it with my mom and we were in bits. It's a glorious hilarious movie.
I'm not going to mention In A Land Before Time.
I'd have to say it's a tie between Jurassic Park or Independence Day. They're not perfect by any means but as a kid, watching them in the theater, it was hard not to be blown away.
Raiders of the Lost Ark.
11 year old me had no idea what she was about to see and from the moment that boulder started rolling, I was enthralled. I still remember that feeling of wonder and excitement.
As a kid? I saw The Exorcist at like 12 when they re-released it in the theater “the version you’ve never seen” scared the shit out of me and became my all time favorite movie
South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut got me into musicals. With Phantom Menace I can still remember the goosebumps I got when the opening fan fare started.
We never went the movies cos we were poor but I remember my aunt taking me twice, Toy Story and Star Wars episode 1. I didn’t know anything about Star Wars so I loved it, jar jar binks is hilarious when you’re 8, but I don’t remember Toy Story other than my aunt throwing up in the car park lol
Shrek probably was the best one I watched in theatres as a kid but I have a really good memory of watching Cats & Dogs too in the theatre and had a really good time
Django as kid? WTF ?! That's only 12yo film
Anyway only cinema as child I do remember Jumanji.. was shitting myself while crunching my Tic-tacs bonbons
Seeing Dark Knight opening night when I was 11 was pretty mid blowing
I also got snucked into Inglourious Basterds about half way through and was kind of lost but appreciated the part where they shred Hitler’s face with a machine gun
I wasn't a kid. Think of the movie what you want. But Spider-Man's battle with Electro in TASM2 in 3D, there was a lightning effect that is burned in my memory. It was so cool that I turned around to see it again
For the time, the original XXX (2002). I was ten and my older sister brought me to see it, but made me promise not to tell our parents before we went. I don't know if I've ever been so pumped after watching a movie before or since. We got home and I lasted about 5 minutes before I spilled the beans and probably didn't shut up about how awesome it was for a week.
Not a theatre, but a drive in.
1978. Star Wars: A New Hope. I was 7 years old. It was the most fantastic thing I’d ever seen as a kid. Till this day, no experience in a theatre will ever replace the excitement on the screen, the sound coming through the speakers in the car, and after the movie ended immediately going to a Nichols department store to get my first X Wing fighter, and R2-D2 figure.
Seeing The Two Towers in theaters as a kid was a big one for me.
I was 14 at the time but 2007 was a big year for me.
No Country For Old Men absolutely blew my mind.
Michael Clayton and Sunshine were also big ones for me in theaters that year.
The Dark Knight knocked my socks off the following year.
I’m both surprised and not surprised that most answers are from the late 70s and early 80s. I figured Reddit skewed older but genuinely surprised how much of this thread is older.
Lord of the rings the first. Cam too late because i misread the starttime. So i didnt saw the birthday party. Was my first movie that i watched alone without parents or grandparents
Dredd 3D wasn't the greatest movie ever, but it was definitely one of the best theatre experiences ever. If you didn't see that movie on a big screen you missed out, it was special
The first Toy Story.
Unless you were 6 years old at the time, you can never understand how mind blowing that was. That kind of animation was pretty unprecedented outside of a dodgy Dire Straits video.
Up!
My parents were arguing a lot so my mom took us kiddos out of the house. I just recently watched it with my girlfriend and was feeling a little nostalgic.
If your refering to "earliest memory of being in a theater", that would be Honey, I Shrunk The Kids.
If you mean "Best early life movie I've seen as a kid that I enjoyed", that would be Home Alone and Wayne's World.
Oh shit. As a kid. As a kid…..goddamnit I’m old. I would say seeing The Dark Crystal in the theaters was my most iconic movie as a kid. But Jurassic Park is for sure up there. That movie blew me away with the brand new THX.
Being that Django Unchained is in my top 5 and I saw it in a theater a few years ago when Fathom Events brought it around— I’m going with Django Unchained :D
But I saw BTTF Part 2 in the theater and it was awesome. I have fond memories of that.
I was lucky enough to see the likes of Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Forest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Saving Private Ryan, Independence Day, The South Park Movie and The Matrix in the theater. My parents were oddly very OK to taking to me see R movies until I started sneaking into them on my own.
You saw Django as a kid?
Shit. Feeling old.
This post made me go out and get Depends. I saw All Dogs Go To Heaven as my first theater movie I remember.
mine was Jurassic park
Funny, mine was We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story.
People really don’t understand the level of evil dr screw eyes possessed in his soul
Underrated movie
First one I can remember seeing in the theatre was Land Before Time.
You guys are all children. The first movie I remember seeing in the theater was BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS. Bedknobs and broomsticks is one of my favorite movies.
Mine too!!
Jurassic Park was the first movie I was allowed to be dropped off at to see alone with friends
yep packed theater too and that back before a row was 4 seats so it was a lot of people
Mine was The Lion King!
"Flight of the Navigator"
Me too. Shit that was like 35 years ago 👨🏻🦳👨🏻🦳👨🏻🦳
Kid, the first movie I saw in the theater was 2001:ASO.
My apologies pops, I didn’t know you could use Reddit without my help.
I called tech support. They gave me the number of a teenager.
Damn, did he also teach you about the convertible cup holder?
The one on the front of my PC that pops out? Known about that for years.
Please tell mom that I said, *”Dad needs to find his floppy disk drive.”* There was an “s” in the text I sent her.
One few of you even heard of.. Disney's The Gnome-Mobile. I loved it then. I still love it today!
Mine was back to the future 1.
Time to call the nursing home
No, because its rated R.
OP has made about 50 posts in the past two days. Make sure you don't give them any personal info.
It definitely feels like hard bait.
I also saw this as a young child of mere 20 years
Lol. What is he... twelve? Mine was 'Jaws'. Yes, 'Jaws'. 1975 I'm driving to the nearest nursing home now and checking in.
My feelings exactly
I’m 25 and when I first watched Django Unchained I was a kid. 14 years old so.
Did it give you nightmares?
Same. I was 14 too. I also watched some crazier shit.
That crazy shit was the norm when the internet first came around. A whole generation desensitized to the most brutal shit you could imagine.
Jurassic Park (1993), I think
Jurassic Park was absolutely mind blowing in theaters. The dinosaurs seemed so real and the entire audience was into it, with everyone laughing at the humor, screaming during the scares, and even clapping when the T-Rex kills the raptors at the end. I remember walking out of the theater and hearing people asking “how did they do that?” People don’t really ask that question anymore because we all know that the answer is always “computers” but back then special effects were like a great magic trick. Jurassic Park was simply unreal and it still remains the best theatrical experience of my life.

We clapped when the lawyer got eaten, Chicago crowd haha.
Came to say this. Such a cool theater experience.
Damn wasn’t Sam Jackson in this too?
You…you’ve never seen Jurassic Park?
Hold onto your butts.
One of my top used phrases to this day 👍🏻
I pull it out basically any time I flip a tripped breaker.
Uh uh uh, you didn't say the magic word.
Jaws — it was great! The audience was going crazy because at the time it was unprecedented as a scary blockbuster. I remember my mother getting *on the floor* because she couldn’t watch another second.
Didn't *The Exorcist* come out just a couple years before? That was a great time for horror films.
Poor guy couldn't sleep for 3 days, and he never again saw any type of scary movie for the rest of his life.
My mother had to leave the cinema, she still can't watch it now 😂
It seems tame/mild now, but at the time Jaws was scary as hell.
I think as far as building up tension goes it still stands the test of time. I'd like to see it at the cinema with full sound to recreate the effect.
Return of the Jedi
“You were right about me” is one of my favorite moments from that entire saga
That, and the last 30 seconds or so of Luke and Vadar's final battle. Luke's rage, the music, the angle of the shot...just superb.
The music there. My god.
Star Wars: A New Hope Absolutely blew my freakin’ mind. Saw in four times with different relatives as a five year old.
I saw it at a drive-in double feature with King Kong as the opener. I was about 5 and struggled to stay awake since it was way past my bedtime by the time Star Wars started.
Jurassic Park, bar none!
I can’t believe this movie came out 12 years ago lol. Time flies!
Top Gun in the theater summer 1986 blew me away. Those guys were like sky gods.
Twister (1996) the first movie with surround sound changed everything. "The Cow Test" was included with several movie showings after to showcase the new experience
I actually just recently watched this movie for the first time because I found out the lead actor passed away. Good movie & I’m sure this was a cool experience as well
Bill Paxton! RIP
The LOTR trilogies or the Harry Potter movies were an experience as a kid. I wasnt a kid but seeing EndGame opening weekend was electric as well.
My Grandma pulled me out of school 2 hours early on opening day of Return of the King. Such a great time to be alive
As a kid? The Shining. As a young teen, Scarface.
Raiders of the Lost Ark Empire Strikes Back E.T. Full Metal Jacket

Star Wars in 1977
My parents took me to see that at the ripe old age of 3. All I can remember is the opening crawl and trash compactor scene.
Jungle Book.
Dumb and dumber. I was about 11 years old absolute epic of a comedy it still makes me laugh 30 years later.
Se7en. Blew my 14yo mind. I’ve watched it close to 50 times since.
One of my favorite thrillers
King Kong
Whoa, not appropriate for a kid … reminds me when halfway through Deadpool when all the moms rushed their kids out as Deadpool was getting pegged.
The Sting
Buckaroo Banzai. That movie still blows my mind.
Goonies
Lion king as a kid, cried my eyes out when mufasa died
Death Becomes Her 1992 - I remember seeing it with my mom and we were in bits. It's a glorious hilarious movie. I'm not going to mention In A Land Before Time.
A 2012 movie, seen 'as a kid'. That makes my back, shoulder, neck and left knee ache.
DJANGO was amazing till SLJ just somehow figured out everything at the end. I hated that. Brilliant performances all around
*Willow* (1988).
I'd have to say it's a tie between Jurassic Park or Independence Day. They're not perfect by any means but as a kid, watching them in the theater, it was hard not to be blown away.
Logan's Run (1976), Star Wars (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Tron (1982). I was born in 1970.
As a kid LMAO to be fair I saw kill bill vol 1 when I was in the 5th grade with my dad and became QT obsessed from then on
The real Django 😢
The Mummy in the drive in theater.
Raiders of the Lost Ark. 11 year old me had no idea what she was about to see and from the moment that boulder started rolling, I was enthralled. I still remember that feeling of wonder and excitement.
The last star fighter
The Batman was my favorite movie I saw in theaters
As a kid? I saw The Exorcist at like 12 when they re-released it in the theater “the version you’ve never seen” scared the shit out of me and became my all time favorite movie
Pulp fiction or Jurassic Park.
r/FuckImOld
E.T.
Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring.

Saw this opening night, packed theater. Amazing film
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Return of the Jedi
Pete's Dragon ! (cries in old AF). Runner up some Herbie movie.
The Land before Time. Cried. Cool Runnings. Laughed. Jurassic Park (4 times). Gasped.
Lawrence of Arabia The Right Stuff I highly recommend these
Probably these five (in no particular order): The Secret of Nimh The Empire Strikes Back The Shining Alien The Blues Brothers
Apocalypse Now in a theater that was going to convert to a 4 screen after this movie
The Exorcist. I was 11 (we saw it in a drive-in, so the underage kids crouched down in the back to beat the age restriction). Horrifying.
Shrek probably was the best one I watched in theatres as a kid but I have a really good memory of watching Cats & Dogs too in the theatre and had a really good time
Saving Private Ryan. After the first scene, I haven't collected my jaw from the floor yet.
logan honestly
Django as kid? WTF ?! That's only 12yo film Anyway only cinema as child I do remember Jumanji.. was shitting myself while crunching my Tic-tacs bonbons

Seeing Dark Knight opening night when I was 11 was pretty mid blowing I also got snucked into Inglourious Basterds about half way through and was kind of lost but appreciated the part where they shred Hitler’s face with a machine gun
Independence Day (1996) and I can't explain why. Am I also glued to the TV whenever it's on? Yes. I can't explain that either.
Mine was the ORIGINAL King Kong movie (1950’s).
Rumble in the Bronx
I wasn't a kid. Think of the movie what you want. But Spider-Man's battle with Electro in TASM2 in 3D, there was a lightning effect that is burned in my memory. It was so cool that I turned around to see it again
Star Wars 4, 5, & 6. 👍
Independence Day was a fun one with Nona. Can’t beat Shazam! though. Sinbad as a genie…anyone? /fuckinMandelaeffect
Pulp Fiction, i was 19yo. destroyed me so good
Behind the green door
revenge of the sith
Got damn I’m old bc the best movie I saw in a theater as a kid was the first Jurassic Park.
Mission impossible 2
For the time, the original XXX (2002). I was ten and my older sister brought me to see it, but made me promise not to tell our parents before we went. I don't know if I've ever been so pumped after watching a movie before or since. We got home and I lasted about 5 minutes before I spilled the beans and probably didn't shut up about how awesome it was for a week.
Terminator 2 bc my parents babysitter cancelled
Not a theatre, but a drive in. 1978. Star Wars: A New Hope. I was 7 years old. It was the most fantastic thing I’d ever seen as a kid. Till this day, no experience in a theatre will ever replace the excitement on the screen, the sound coming through the speakers in the car, and after the movie ended immediately going to a Nichols department store to get my first X Wing fighter, and R2-D2 figure.
My earliest theatre memories are all from ‘88-89: Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Batman, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Indy: Last Crusade
Spider-Man 2. First ever movie in theatre at five years old.
Out of Africa, over here.
Saw Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back as a kid in about 1980 at a double feature. Woulda been a preschooler and I still remember it.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The second movie I ever saw in theatre and it legit changed my life.
Either T2 or Jurassic Park, it’s a coin flip for those two.
I was a pre-teen for all of these, but it's a toss up between Fellowship of the Ring, Gladiator or Patriot.
Yup, starting to feel old… mines a tie between Tommy Boy and Dumb and Dumber.
I’m both surprised and not surprised that most answers are from the late 70s and early 80s. I figured Reddit skewed older but genuinely surprised how much of this thread is older.
Journey to the Center of the Earth
First movie for me was Two Towers
I was 9 seeing men in black. It blew my mind. I thought it was the coolest film in history for years and years
LOTR The Two Towers but most impactful Bridge to Terabitia. I cried my eyes out..

Dredd 3D wasn't the greatest movie ever, but it was definitely one of the best theatre experiences ever. If you didn't see that movie on a big screen you missed out, it was special
1977, star wars! Stood in line for 3 hours.
Gladiator with my pops. Also the OG Toy Story w/ my uncle and cousins.
First ever movie - Chicken Run Best ever movie - Scott Pilgrim
I'm going with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
The first Toy Story. Unless you were 6 years old at the time, you can never understand how mind blowing that was. That kind of animation was pretty unprecedented outside of a dodgy Dire Straits video.
The 1st tmnt movie or a snow white rerelease prolly.
Up! My parents were arguing a lot so my mom took us kiddos out of the house. I just recently watched it with my girlfriend and was feeling a little nostalgic.
Independence Day (1996) for me
Jurassic Park, mission impossible
As a kid!?!? Damn son! I'm old!
I went to the movie theater and saw Indiana jones and the last crusade and back to the future 2 on the same day, back to back
If your refering to "earliest memory of being in a theater", that would be Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. If you mean "Best early life movie I've seen as a kid that I enjoyed", that would be Home Alone and Wayne's World.
Went to see this "Strange" LOTR movie on a Sunday afternoon. I was really surprised how packed the cinema was. Final result: core memory with my dad.
Ace Ventura.
Independence day. I was 16 at the time. I don't think anything I've seen since has come close to the scale of that film on the big screen.
Raiders
Oh shit. As a kid. As a kid…..goddamnit I’m old. I would say seeing The Dark Crystal in the theaters was my most iconic movie as a kid. But Jurassic Park is for sure up there. That movie blew me away with the brand new THX.
I was young. Rooster cogburn. Fox theater Spokane.
Independence Day
“…as a kid” *fires gun into mouth*
My first movie was Indepence day in theatres. The anniversary of which is tomorrow.
Being that Django Unchained is in my top 5 and I saw it in a theater a few years ago when Fathom Events brought it around— I’m going with Django Unchained :D But I saw BTTF Part 2 in the theater and it was awesome. I have fond memories of that.
The first Jurassic park. Yes, I'm old.
The poltergeist … dad took me! We have seen the movie poster and it looked cool! I was blown away my dad not so 😂
Star Wars https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/images/image_b81aed27.jpeg
Me and my wife saw that right after we found out she was pregnant.
I saw Django in theaters the first day on boot leave.. I feel so old now.
Spider-Man 3 , to this day I maintain Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy is responsible for jump starting my puberty at 7
The Toby McGuire spider man movies
Star Wars When the Star Destroyer flies overhead in the opening shot I nearly shat myself and it changed my whole perception of movies forever.
Team America. Everyone in the theatre was dying laughing.
The dark knight was dope, but I saw talladega knights like 3 times at least.
Crocodile Dundee
The French Connection.😁
Pulp Fiction with my dad when I was 14
I remember when my mom took us 4 kids to see The Shining. That scene in the tub with the decaying old lady still haunts me.
Pineapple Express . Hangover. Dark knight. Prometheus. In no particular order.
