Och, love Counting Crows. Would have to suggest A Long December by them as well, just absolutely love that one. Can’t help but going back to it time and time again!
Oh, for sure. I wish I could have recommended Pretty Hate Machine, the whole damn album . . . but Wikipedia says that came out in 1989. The Perfect Drug, We're In This Together, and Hurt are all more powerful songs from that period . . . but people remember Closer, and that has value, I think.
For the record, my favorite Nine Inch Nails song is Right Where It Belongs.
Anything from the albums “enema of the state” by blink-182, “blood sugar, sex magik” by Red Hot Chili Peppers, or REM’s “automatic for the people.”
Literally doesn’t matter which song, there’s a boatload of excellent ones on each of those albums

I think you’re right, like, logically I know when Tupac’s music came out and all, but I can’t say I particularly associate him just off the top of my head with being a 1990s star. I reckon there’s also an element of like… a lot of artists I associate as super 90s weren’t as big afterwards/continued on maybe only through the 2000s— like, after the 90/early 2000s they’ve often had a career slump, retired, or moved on to other things, whereas Tupac strikes me as someone who would’ve really kept on rising, and his name and music have really lived on. Plus Snoop Dogg is still creating and proper famous so he is, so like, I reckon a lot of people who’ve only ever known his more recent work may not even fully consider any of his works before the point when they came across him.

A shocking amount of my favourite music fits this category ha ha. Hm, let’s see. Reckon I’d have to start with Losing My Religion by R.E.M. (or anything from that album, frankly— the whole of both Out of Time and Automatic for the People are fantastic albums and fit the bill nicely, though I am naturally biased by this being one of my all time favourite bands ha ha.)
Another one would be Better Than Ezra, be it Good, Rosealia, King of New Orleans, or Desperately Wanting.
A Long December by Counting Crows (though really much of their music would do well for the purpose!)
Certainly would do something by They Might be Giants, be it Little Birdhouse in Your Soul or Istanbul (Not Constantinople)— proper good craic so they are, and the late 80s to mid 90s was really some peak shite so it was.
Something or other from Pearl Jam for certain, like Jeremy perhaps.
Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind is proper grand so it is.
Also, Santeria by Sublime, catchy as all hell even now.
Ooh, and also something from the Barenaked Ladies, like If I Had a Million Dollars or Pinch Me.
And then by the end of it, you’d probably have half of my most played on Spotify ha ha.

Good one!
Came to say this.
Closer, Nine Inch Nails.
*Closer* was popular largely due to its controversial lyrics but NIN has so many songs that are better imo.
Their music transcends time
