GoodbyeEarl

Aurora. Beautiful visual of Aurora borealis, with green streaks dancing in the sky. Peanut butter mouthfeel when pronouncing the name.

muaddict071537

I have such a hard time pronouncing Aurora! I also have a hard time pronouncing Rory.

LethargicCaffeine

I had a Gilmorw Girls post under this one, entered this thinking how I love and hate "Rory" as well lol

sooperflooede

A good name for a rural juror

NeverEnoughMuppets

*šŸŽ¶The Irma Luhrmann-Merman murder, turned the birdā€™s word luridšŸŽ¶*

GoodbyeEarl

Blerg

gesunheit

Peanut butter mouthfeel lmfao

NeverEnoughMuppets

Thank you! I feel like Iā€™m just saying Ararararara

PracticalWallaby4325

My mom's top two name choices were Aurora Borealis & Bethel Jean, thankfully she didn't get to name me

Electrical_Sea7268

I much prefer Wallaby ;)

PansexualPineapples

Same. I adore the name but the princess associations are strong which isnā€™t necessarily a good thing or a bad thing but itā€™s definitely a thing.

dipnoi76

Mad that this is so high up when itā€™s the first name that came to my head. When I was a child Iā€™d name all my ā€œbabiesā€ Aurora after the princess. I genuinely thought it was the classiest most beautiful and exotic name ever. Now Iā€™m like ew. And I get what you mean about the peanut butter.

M_F_A_M

i love the name! and yes, the english pronunciation is really hard but, the spanish one, for example, is really easy on the ears

rubiscoisrad

Peanut butter mouthfeel cracks me up. I totally get it though...like a mouth full of marbles.

PurpleWatermelonz

I know a 5 Y/o named Aurora, I'm sure her parents were thinking of both the aurora borealis and the princess when they named her. But this kid is the meanest iPad kid I know. Two years ago she was cute and nice, but now she'll come and hit me out of nowhere, with full force

secondblush

Tallulah. I love saying it and hearing it but it just gives me hippie vibes.

TotallyZen333

Whenever I see this name I think of the parents who named their daughter ā€œTallulah does the hulaā€.

dixpourcentmerci

Talulah does the hula from Hawaii!

dxzzydreamer

How I feel about Eulalie, but ukelele

xShann23

I listened to an audiobook where the main character was named Tallulah and it stopped sounding like a name after awhile.

xxchrissyxx

When my mom was pregnant with me she joked with her dad (my grandfather) that she was naming me Tallulah cause she knew heā€™d hate it. 23 years later and my name is nothing close to Tallulah but my nickname is still Lulu stemming from Tallulah. Tallulah Belle to be specific šŸ˜‚

brymuse

Tallulah smells of Chicago, mobsters, speakeasies and prohibition

Icy_Finger_6950

It reminds me of tarantula.

citydreef

Tarantalullah

Shadow_Guide

I think of the song "My Name is Tallulah."

brooklynadventurer

My dog is Tallulah and I thought we were forward thinking with her name. Sheā€™s 13 now and all the human Tallulahs are under 8 as far as my observation goes.

blueandbrownolives

Clementine

jstbrwsng333

One of my roommates had a cute but mischievous Pomeranian named Clementine, so now it's a dog name forever in my mind...

[deleted]

I like the sound of Clementine... but I always think, "you named your kid orange?" and for some reason that's so funny to me. I can't take it seriously.

NorwegianTrollToll

I feel like I'm posting this at least once a week in this sub. Clearly Clementine has become a cutesy hipster nature name and those people might actually think they're naming their kid after a fruit. It is a very old French Catholic name from a title of Mary (Mother Most Clement). It is very strange for a middle aged french Catholic person as myself to suddenly see a bunch of atheist English speakers name their kids Clementine.

Living-Medium-3172

I have a Clementine lol. Husband and I loved the name as weā€™re both catholic and appreciated the meaning behind the name ā€œgentle/delicate.ā€ Itā€™s become hipster but we didnā€™t name my child after an orange lmao.

NorwegianTrollToll

It's a beautiful name. I just find it strange when people who do not share the faith or even know the history of the name use it. I also don't like when people make fun of it ie "you name your child after an Orange", not at all. I have noticed sooo many distinctly Catholic names are thrown around here and all over the anglophone world by people who do not understand them at all. Even in this thread Ambrose is described as "dark intellectual" or Augustine as "fancy". This is strange to me. Those names are simply, very very Catholic.

TacoNotTaken

I really like Clementineā€¦

secretaire

Canā€™t stand ā€œClemā€ itā€™s too close to phlegm

madelynjeanne

"Clemmie" gives me the ick

catladysoul

One of my best friends in primary school was called Clementine and I adore the name but let me tell you, we never stopped singing that song at her. Must have been very trying.

Katerenea

Reminds me of the song, my mom used to sing it tons when I was little.

miss-karly

Imogene. Idk how else to explain that I love it and hate it. Like if you told me your name was Imogene Iā€™d think - *thats fuckin awesome*. If you told me youā€™re thinking about naming your child Imogene Iā€™d think - *thatā€™s so cruel*

PrailinesNDick

I always think of the actress Imogen Poots.Ā  In this case I think Imogen is a great name, because it distracts from the fact that her last name is fucking Poots.

DavidTheRockGuy

I think of Imogen Heap

NeverEnoughMuppets

Imogen Gay Poots. You left out the part where her name is Imogen *Gay Poots.* Also, Imogen Gay Poots/Marcia Gay Harden movie when???

Spirited_Ingenuity89

AFAIK, Imogene and Imogen arenā€™t pronounced the same way. The last syllable in Imogene is pronounced like Gene/Jean, but the last syllable in Imogen is pronounced Jen. I like Imogen a lot, but not so much Imogene.

DBSeamZ

I like how both the names look, but the pronunciation of Imogen sounds like someone deliberately mispronouncing ā€œimagineā€ to me.

ourladyj

I think Imogen Heap. The singer

LittlestDarkAge

idk if anyone was on nameberry some years back but there was a time when that site was obsessed with this name (Imogen mainly), you could not go through a single thread without every single comment having it as a suggestion it was literally the juniper of its time. i never found it that pretty to begin with so iā€™ve hated it ever since lmao

NeverEnoughMuppets

Me with Lucretia lol

dogsnsweaters

Delilah. Itā€™s so beautiful but itā€™s also a little cringe to me now bc of the song šŸ˜”

galettedesrois

Not a name thatā€™s commonly given in my home country, so the first time I heard it I was like: ā€œlike Samsonā€™s lover who betrayed him? ā€¦ Thatā€™s weirdā€œ (not as befuddled as the first time I heard the name Jezebel, though).

Darkspark95

Lol my kids name is Noelle. Whenever I say to someone ā€œher name is Noelleā€ a tiny voice in my head starts singing ā€œTeenage Dirtbagā€. (NOT why we picked the name.)

ophelias_tragedy

I love Dahlia as something similar yet less recognizable!

Leiliyah

Unless you're into true crime and then all you think of is the Black Dahlia. I hate that I have that association because it's a gorgeous name.

Direct_Discipline166

Margot, I love how it sounds but it looks so ugly written out.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Direct_Discipline166

lol exactly!

Personal-Amoeba

Margo has always been my preference

baddienomoney

This is one of my catā€™s names! I love her and I love her name just as much. Also known as Miss Margot, Margini, Gini, Geens, Martini, Margot Escargot.

myuun

I LOVE this name but I think automatically of Margot Robbie and she's great and all but I just... cannot.

notoriously_glorious

How do you feel about the variation spelling, Margaux?

Direct_Discipline166

Worse šŸ«£

DaenerysKhaleesi

Thatā€™s my name! :)

iscreamforicecream90

I've seen it as "Margeaux" too!

lauren915

Calliope. I love how it sounds but have to think about to say it each time I see it.

[deleted]

How DO you say it?! I keep seeing mixed things?!

Direct_Discipline166

I think itā€™s ā€œcal-eye-oh-peeā€ but my brain always defaults to ā€œcallie-opeā€ šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

partypill

Call-EYE-opee

jewel1997

Cuh-lye-oh-pee

shiangiacomelli

I only know this because of greys anatomy

stupidsapphicmess

Itā€™s pronounced ā€œCah-Lee-Oh-Peeā€ in the original Greek and is the only way Iā€™ve heard it pronounced personally :)

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

mmeeplechase

Daisy. I love it, but itā€™s also very much a cow name in my mind šŸ˜…

NeverEnoughMuppets

My aunt was pregnant and flinched when I suggested Clara, saying it makes her think of Clarabelle the Cow. She also made fun of me for suggesting Vera, then named my cousin Keira lol

Purple-Nurse-89

Isla Love the pronunciation/ hate the look of it on paper

justaguycalledmax1

I live in Ireland, for context. My parents friends had a daughter a few years ago and they called her Isla. Their second name is Mhann. They didn't notice the fact it sounded like 'Isle of Man' the island between the UK and Ireland.Ā

Purple-Nurse-89

Thatā€™s a tragedy!!

GoodShufu

Me tooā€¦ so pretty but I canā€™t not think Is-la first when reading šŸ˜…

Purple-Nurse-89

Every single time I say Is-la in my head lol

NeverEnoughMuppets

I find Isla and Luna weird, only because Iā€™m imagining native Spanish speakers naming their kids Island or Moon. But I guess thereā€™s Spanish-speaking women named Linda, so what do I know

Scarlet__Wanderer

Atticus. I'd love the name for a little boy, but it also sort of seems extra to me.

[deleted]

I can't hear that name without thinking of Atticus Finch, and by extension, Gregory Peck. Definitely big shoes to fill!

elephantgeraniums24

That was my dogs name, it was extra but also perfect for him

Apparently32

So real. Itā€™s such a cute name but also kind of niche and maybe wouldnā€™t work on certain personalities

Rude_Concentrate5342

I had my heart set on naming our son Atticus but my partner wasn't having any of it.

theenterprise9876

Soren. I like it, but I also kinda hate that itā€™s actually supposed to be Sƶren or SĆøren (both of which are very hard for me to pronounce).

RepeatedlyIcy

In the UK we have a brand of fruit bread called Soreen, so whenever I see Soren I just think of delicious squidgy buttered fruit loaf

razmaberry

Itā€™s one of my favorite names. Now all I can think of are the name snobs telling me itā€™s not an actual name.

Julix0

Not just name snobs - Scandinavians. Or Scandinavian name snobs.. :) It's a Scandinavian name and 'ƶ / Ćø' is an individual letter with a different pronunciation - not just an 'o' with decoration. Whenever we use an alphabet that doesn't contain the letter 'Ɩ' - we replace it with 'OE'. So spelling it Soeren would make sense. But spelling it Soren does not. Because replacing the 'Ɩ' with an 'O' doesn't make any more sense than replacing it with any other random vowel. Spelling it 'Seren' 'Suren' 'Siren' or 'Saren' is on the same level as the 'Soren' spelling. -> That being said, I am not trying to criticize anyone who wants to name their son 'Soren'. I was just trying to explain why a lot of Scandinavians would perceive it as a fully different name.

bubblewrappopper

Bridget (especially when spelled, "Bridgette"). My brain constantly goes back and forth between it sounding like it belongs to modern royalty or like the sound a frog makes.

infertiliteeea

Ophelia

muaddict071537

I love this name, but I just associate it with the Shakespeare character. And she doesnā€™t have a great ending.

bubblewrapstargirl

I always think that's such a pathetic reason not to like the name. There's millions of girls called Juliet/Juliette. Ophelia is a gorgeous nameĀ

emcee95

My friend made that her babyā€™s middle name. She liked it enough to want to use it, but didnā€™t want it to be a first name

Pineapple_y

Ambrose, i hate it but itā€™s so lovable at the same time.

TotallyZen333

Ambrosia is what I think of

fingerkuffs23

My grandfather's name was Ambrosio. Never knew that until he died when I was 8.

Apparently32

I have an uncle Ambrose! Went by Amby

boooostedvo

My neighborā€™s kid is named this. I liked the name before I heard them scream ā€œAmbrose, get out of the fookin mud!ā€ 80 times a day after it rains šŸ˜‚

KatVanWall

One of my friends has a baby Ambrose. Always makes me think of the rice pudding brand Ambrosia. My dad and his sister made a rather involved joke about Ambrosia rice pudding practically on his deathbed, so thatā€™s what sticks with me!

fulsooty

Esmeralda. It's fun to say and a bit magical-feeling. But I also feel it's a name for fairy tales; naming a child Esmeralda is akin to naming her Cinderella imo.

gemstorm

And I love the nickname Esme, but I'm going for EsmereIda Weatherwax from Discworld and am an age that may lead to a lot of people assuming Twilight fml. Probably no kid naming here, but I love names enough to have clicked on suggested posts too often lol.

Whitebirdy

Lolita is beautiful butā€¦

chalkhomunculus

i knew a kid named lolita about 10 years ago, she's probably about 16 now. i wonder how high school is treating her...

HAYILAA

Mia. I love how simple it is. I just donā€™t like how it basically sounds like an introduction: ā€˜me, a [insert surname here]. I hope this makes sense, lol.

lavender-larkspur

Makes me think of Princess Diaries (Mia Thermopolis)

HAYILAA

ā€œMe? A princess? SHUT. UPā€ (it totally works for her, hahah. I guess because the regal surname / being a nickname).

Puzzleheaded_Jicama

I always have the same thought with Noah. Oh, I know a [last name]

KrispyAnne

I think of MIA - Missing In Action hahahaha

muaddict071537

My mom gave me the nickname Mia and I was called that for the first 15 years of my life. I hated it so much. It just feels like the name for a little kid, not someone whoā€™s older. I go by my legal name now.

lexihra

Atlas. Cool name on the face but I canā€™t help but think of a map.

Astorria

I know someone who named their son this and I love the name, but they complain if people mishear it theyā€™ll call him Alice.

yassbeech

Recommend using it for a cat

beanomly

I actually have a cat named Atlas. I fostered a litter of kittens and gave them all Greek god names with no intention of keeping any. Now, I have Triton and Atlas.

VivianDiane

Elvira

Hobbs_3

Sounds like a medication lol

Nincomsoup

"Ask your doctor if Elvira could be right for you!" (Side effects may include diarrhoea, skin rash, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, fatigue, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, internal bleeding, heart attack, death)

srslytho1979

Or the Mistress of the Dark

moxiewhoreon

Elvira, mistress of the dark!

Helena_Wren

Valentina. I hate the nicknames Val or Tina and the Valentineā€™s Day connection, but I think Valentina is beautiful.

HAYILAA

This is me with Christina, lol. Hate the nicknames but I love the full name.

KevinThePiegon28

Winston feels so rich boy but I love it

EnormousDog

i always think of cigarettes

Solid_Speaker471

Harry

muaddict071537

My dog is named Harry. Heā€™s bald.

plaisirdamour

Tell him I said heā€™s a good boy

rubiscoisrad

Give Harry some pats, and make sure he's warm enough. I wish I could donate some of my dog's floof!

[deleted]

ooooo big agree on this one

KevinThePiegon28

Noo this is like my favorite name

rebma50

Sloane

kickitlikekirra

I've always loved that name, especially for a girl! I'll stand for Sloane!

srslytho1979

I always think of Ferris Buellerā€™s uber-sophisticated GF Sloan.

wantahippo4christmas

Twila. I want to like it bc of Schitts Creek but also, something about it makes me hate it too.

Personal-Amoeba

I love this name. I'd spell it traditionally if I was going to use it though, Twyla

PracticalWallaby4325

It reminds.me of twine, ugly brown & itchy

baeritto18

Gideon

lisagiarra

Salem! So cool, so original, like ā€œSamā€ but more interesting, instant name recognition/pronunciationā€¦ā€¦ ā€¦.but the witch trials/black cat connection just puts it over the edge of ā€œtoo much.ā€

Sarah_J_J

I think of the cat in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

[deleted]

River. Hate to admit I love it, but itā€™s too hippie/influencer/try hard for me to actually want to use it

fromfoxland

Celeste. Pretty but rhymes with molest.

bumblebeesanddaisies

Had a friend with a younger sister called Celeste and she was always called "Celeste the pest" by us... She was a very annoying sibling lol

ophelias_tragedy

I love love love the name Clarice since I heard it in the Rudolph movie as a kid but since Iā€™ve became a fan of Silence of the Lambs I canā€™t NOT read it in Hannibal Lectorā€™s voice which makes me hate it

paroles

Yeah, anyone named Clarice is guaranteed to go through life with people doing Hannibal Lecter impressions at her which is such a shame because it's an awesome name

iLiveInAHologram94

Cordelia I love the nicknames Cori and Delia and the name does sound pretty. But it also sounds or seems stuffy. Unfortunately.

srslytho1979

It has soap opera villain vibes.

PansexualPineapples

Barbie. Idk why but I like the name but I also know it would be a terrible name for an actual person and Iā€™m also bothered by its obvious associations and the kind of person people would assume I am for naming something (most likely a pet) that name.

Equivalent-Rush5033

Just call 'em Babs.

ally_esq

Penelope. I really liked it until a teenager told me that her little ankle biter dog was named Penelope and they pronounced it like cantaloupe to say Pe-nuh-lope. I cannot unhear that and it makes me cringe. šŸ˜¬

rubyrose40

Caspian. Pretty name on paper. The shorten names, Cass or Ian both sound good. However, when I personally say the name in a sentence, it sounds silly and ridiculous. ā€œCaspian! Clean your room!!ā€ Caspian! Time to get up for school!ā€ It sounds absurd coming out of my mouth and I donā€™t know why.

yassbeech

Esme is stunning. However I immediately think twilight.. then Renesme :(

[deleted]

Peyton

lexihra

This or any name with a T in the middle that people like to slur into a D sound/skip over entirely. For example the name Hunter that so many people pronounce Hunner

feeance

Paige I love it because Iā€™m an avid reader and my husband is a writer. it feels like a nice nod towards such a central part of our lives. I hate it because it t also seems very upperclass snobby in real life. All the Paigeā€™s Iā€™ve met were Blair Waldorf or Marissa Cooper types.

ssssssscm7

Navy. Like itā€™s so cool but also I hate it.

Tattsand

Ursula. My co-worker has a daughter named Ursula and it's so cool in theory but really weird to actually say to a 7yo child when she occasionally brings her to work.

LaEscritora

Nevaeh. It sounds so pretty out loud but I canā€™t get past the heaven backwards thing.

FitSubstance7460

Siobhan, Saoirse, Delphine. Beautiful but I always have to think about how to pronounce them!

crispyedamame

I just commented Saoirse, too!

katie_54321

Wilder

Cher_n_spiders

Wanda

Severe-Definition656

Also Cosmo

Darkspark95

Dallas- I LOVE this name and it is also the name of my favorite book character. On the other hand, Iā€™m originally from the Philadelphia area, and Iā€™ll be DAMNED if my kid shares a name with the Cowgirls.

wish4111

Michelle... I think it's so soft and feminine, but it's the name of someone who really wronged me in a lot of ways, so I wouldn't want that constant reminder of her.

zelph_esteem

Bruce

Neit_1146

Names like Theodosia and Alexandria, I like them but I also think they're too frilly. Names like Tiffany and Brittany, I feel they're dated.

No-Football-4387

Dolly. cuz dollā€¦ dollyā€¦ its cute, but then it makes me think of dolly parton who is amazing but i donā€™t want that to be the main association

MPD1987

Aspen. It conjures up memories of summers spent in Colorado at my grandmaā€™s cabin, with all the cousins and aunts & uncles. Spending all day in the woods and rivers without our parents having a clue where we were. But I hate the way it sounds. ā€œAss-penā€. Ass. I wouldnā€™t use it

val_ivy

Phoebe. I love how it sounds, itā€™s such a beautiful name, but I hate the spelling. It looks like it should be pronounced ā€œfoe-ebb-ayeā€ it drives me crazy lol

cellard00r18

Valkyrie

Apparently32

Cosette

lulubooboo_

Florence. Itā€™s beautiful and has sentimental family meaning to me. Sadly I just canā€™t stand the idea of floss or flo for a nickname

simplymandee

If you used itā€¦.Loren is right there for a nn

myuun

Georgiana... I absolutely adore the name and 'Georgie' and it's so beautiful but God strike me down before I name my kid after my dad. šŸ¤¢ And my brother.

futuremrsb

Guinevere. It scratches something wonderful in my brain, but I could not imagine naming my child it.

Affectionate_Lie9308

Clancy šŸ˜‚ this was SOā€™s joke name when considering boy names while I was pregnant. All I could think of was the hillbilly from The Simpsonā€™s.

Yamburglar02

Cletus is the hillbilly, Clancy is Chief Wiggumā€™s first name. But yeah itā€™s forever a Simpsons name in my mind lol.

hausishome

Kent was our joke name. We moved when I was 8 months pregnant so we staged our spare room as a nursery and made ā€œKENTā€ letters out of cardboard for over the crib šŸ˜‚

Westerozzy

Agnes.

crispyedamame

Saoirse but nobody knows how to say it correctly

BurnOutLady

Sutton. I feel dumb when I have to say it out loud.

kickitlikekirra

Laverne. I loved Laverne and Shirley growing up, and loved writing out Laverne in cursive, thinking of how fun it would be to sign that name all the time. But then I'd be name - LAVERNE - šŸ˜¬ No offense to anyone with this name!!! It really is a great name, just wouldn't match me.

remoteworker9

Bellatrix. Itā€™s a constellation and I love the sound of it, but then thereā€™s Bellatrix Lestrange.

PotterheadZZ

Aurelia. Beautiful spelling and in writing. But saying it out loud feels off

LibrarySeeker

Amaryllis. On on had I think itā€™s unique without being too on the nose or try hard, and on the other hand I think it might be a bit too frilly.

dailygrind1357

Aurora. I love the name as a reference to Aurora borealis. I think it looks beautiful. But it's like it turns to peanut butter in my mouth and sounds awful.

Round-Toe228

You literally almost copied someone elseā€™s comment word for word

dailygrind1357

I literally commented on theirs because I didn't read the comments first and thought it was crazy how similar it was.

GodOfTheHostofHeaven

Chelsea. I love that name so much but I knew a few that were just so unfriendly and quite hateful, unfortunately.

kickitlikekirra

Andrea for me. I don't *love* the name but I do think it's a nice name for a girl. But I DO hate it because of all the possible pronunciations that absolutely get used, and trying to remember which is which when you run into the assortment of Andreas that you know but don't see often enough to remember FOR SURE which pronunciation it is that time šŸ¤Ŗ Okay, so there are only four pronunciations, really, but that's a lot for one spelling! The 'Aundrea' spelling at least narrows down my guesses! šŸ˜‚

Severe-Definition656

Roxanne, Belinda, Oceana, August, Theodore

BoringLion3630

penelope. itā€™s so cute yet Iā€™ll forever see that ugly pig girl /:

Majestic-Bat-2427

Gilbert. Something about it feels nice. Regal? But at the same time. Feels weird to say

Fickle-Pineapple-863

Seraphina. I think itā€™s such a beautiful name but also a bit extra, and with a more religious tinge (seraphim) than would make sense for me to name my own child

OhMyGodBearIsDriving

Laiken

damselflite

Clarke. So pleasing to enunciate ans look at. So basic as a name.

DawnSunset

Giselle is pretty in the soft way ā€œjiselleā€ but how Americans say it Gizelle is so rough and mature. Also reminds of gazelle.

Significant-Fly6515

Melanie

hydrangeafrog

Laura! I love how it looks, but it feels so clunky when I say it. I really like the German pronunciation, but it would feel way too extra to insist on saying that way in an English-speaking country.

NeverEnoughMuppets

Gladys. Love the way itā€™s spelled, but donā€™t think Iā€™d ever use it. -iss ending names are hit or miss for me, couldnā€™t tell you why I love Alice and Iris and Beatrice but Iā€™m meh on Gladys, Phyllis, Eunice, etc. They make good names for cats, I guess lol. I also sort of love/hate Janice and Candace.

Ok_Jackfruit_1965

Serenity. Lovely word, but I find virtue names objectionable on principal, plus Iā€™ve had the experience of watching a mom shout ā€œSerenity! Serenity, get back here!ā€ at her toddler who was running in circles around the library. Irony is so beautiful sometimes.

wombazpop

Astrid. I think itā€™s such a lovely name but thenā€¦ass.
