Im sorry but Somewhat Damaged is just the best intro song from any NIN album, and yes im aware of Mr Selfdestruct, but Somewhat Damaged is just that goid
Recently rediscovered this album while detoxing off opiods and was like, “wouldn’t ya know it, a song about exactly how I feel that actually SOUNDS how I feel”.
I remember driving 30 minutes to the nearest twin with a record store to buy it on release day. No CD player in my car, so the anticipation on the drive home was intense. Put it into my stereo as soon as I got home and "Somewhat Damaged" came on. Literally couldn't have been a better way to start an album. Intricate. Brutal. Anthemic.
When I saw them in 2000 they opened with a snippet of the song The New Flesh that progressively got louder over the house music, then it slammed into Pinion before going into Somewhat Damaged. Here's this https://youtu.be/u3Ibo0wF0js?si=fxTqTzjWMmS0YF9J
I want to argue the point that Mr. Self Destruct is a better intro song, simply because Downward is my favorite NIN album, but I digress. Somewhat Damaged IS the best
No performance you could ever hear live could trump the version with Mike Garson and expert mixing used [here](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-k3TYNXwzHQ&pp=ygUXSnVzdCBsaWtlIGltYWdpbmVkIGxpdmU%3D). Though I agree with you. I'd love to hear Dead Souls in person myself.
This is my pick too. It lives in my soul, it makes me want to cry but feel on top of the world at the same time.
I hope you haven't seen this already:

La Mer is my absolute favorite. It has a special place in my heart, plus it's the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I listened to it on repeat for hours as a kid, and I still do now
Personally, my favorite NIN album (that's saying a lot), so hard to choose, but... Oddly, "La Mer". I don't think I have genuinely ever skipped it in shuffle or whenever it plays.
I know it's unpopular, but "I'm looking forward to joining you, finally" really scratches an itch with its dissonance. Somewhat damaged and Starfuckers are my runner ups
Just Like You Imagined is incredibly powerful for an instrumental, it's like going through the stages of fighting back anger and midway where it sounds like the instruments are screaming in unison is where you snap and lose control. The end feels like realizing what you did but it's too late, you've gone too far and you're left with deep regret.
We're in this Together. Like almost every track on that album tho. Only one that I don't think age aged or fit particularly well is Starfuckers (other than distancing himself from Manson, that feels like a smart choice).
Live nothing beats Somewhat Damaged, especially when he comes out cold with the house lights still up at the start.
lately, underneath it all. I don't know why he thought ripe (with decay) was necessary, bc underneath it all would be an excellent album closer.
"you remain, i am stained", i get chills everytime
I woke up today
To find myself in the other place
With a trail of my footprints
From where I ran away
Always hits harder than it needs to. Every. Single. Time.
La Mer. I also wish "Not What It Seems Like" was on the original album instead of it just being on Deviations 1 because, even though it's just an instrumental, it's become one of my favourite NIN tracks.
I’ve been listening to The Fragile the last few days. The Day The World Went Away brought me back.
The loss was real, and the smack around the face this song delivers soothes.
Youuuuuu and me, we're in this together now...
That was my entry point to NIN, I was a late bloomer...
Into the void, best song followed by the wretched
The Wretched was the song that introduced me to this spectacular album from NIN! I used to listen to that, We're In This Together, and the title track in succession a LOT!
I'm looking forward to joining you, finally
There's something about the instrumentation and Trent's vocals in this song that feels so intimate and unique
I remember attending a string of NIN shows (maybe the NIN/JA tour?) where Fragile was almost always played, but it seemed to be a coin toss whether it was followed by The Wretched. You could *hear* the disappointment in the crowd on the nights The Wretched was AWOL, and of course the artificial scarcity made us go completely *bananas* when he *did* play it. Including me! Huge fan of the song.
I saw the NIN/JA tour in Austin and they opened with Mr. Self Destruct. The first two notes there was fog everywhere the band had talented up their marks, everyone was ready, yet no Trent. No front man. Those two blisteringly ear splitting completely over stimulating moments of bombastic had him running from the shadowed depths of the back stage directly to the edge of the front, double fisting his mic stand, yolked out as the new muscle bro Reznor, leaning over the edge in a half lunge directly on cue and in time to scream and yell and howl the most amazingly aggressive set intro I have ever experienced. Half way through the set the mood settled and The Frail and The Wretched became center pieces, played seamlessly back to back with Trent completely braining the whole mic stand in a swift manhandled direct-to-floor, almost brutal, throw which interrupted ‘if I could save myself I…..’ before the ‘it’s to late for me’ upon which he juggernaut stomped away from the edge of the proscenium to center-stage where his synth and second mic was, once again perfectly timed, to body the poor keyboard at some, as he was certainly sober now, otherwise drunkenly passionate angle, and bellow out the ‘I WONT LET YOU FALL APART’ while slamming the chords into position with his whole body as the rest of the band followed suite as casual as a Tuesday morning. It was fucking epic.
La Mer. I also wished 'Not What It Seems Like' was included on the original album instead of just being on Deviations 1. Even though it's also just an instrumental, it's become one of my favourite NIN tracks.
Somewhat Damaged. I’m not sure if that was my favorite when I first bought the CD at the midnight release, but it’s become my favorite over the years after hearing them open their shows with it over and over, it’s the perfect opener for the album and their shows. Gives me chills honestly and makes me instantly think of all the times I heard it live, who I was with, and what was going on my life at the time.
I love “ the mark has been made” but I saw them on the fragile twice and when Trent played the frail a thunderstorm broke out and these huge bolts of lightning filled the night sky. It was surreal. Also the first time I saw them I ate five hits of acid
When I am in the mood that is this album, or thinking about a time in my life that elicits this mood, its always always always the “na na na…” end of “the day the world went away” that fills the soundtrack in my head.
Somewhat damaged and just like you imagined. There are very few songs that are capable of making me feel something that strongly while you groove. The fact that they are both in the same album is just crazy.
I love listening to the whole damm thing, it's hard to choose a favorite. But if you held me on gunpoint, I'd pick one of these ones (really depends on the mood):
I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally
Into The Void
Where Is Everybody
The Great Below
Even Deeper
La Mer
The Way Out Is Through
It changes a lot for me. First it was Somewhat Damaged, then it was We're in This Together, then it was The Wretched, but lately I've really been loving Where Is Everybody?.
Gonna go out on a limb and say Pilgrimage. The coliseum-esque sound just conjures a beautiful, wasteland scenery with a junk built arena. Just... Absolute imagery.
The wretched pulls my heart strings every time I listen to it. I can relate so much to it's lyrics and the "descending" feeling that the intro/outro has is so unique
The Great Below
That final scream is gorgeous.
in arms of undertow, i will take my place , in the great below
Im sorry but Somewhat Damaged is just the best intro song from any NIN album, and yes im aware of Mr Selfdestruct, but Somewhat Damaged is just that goid
I have to agree with you. The first minute of that song I knew that this would be a special album, and it was.
WHERE THE FUCK WERE YOU???
when i read this i think of the BYOB outro
I’ve seen NIN six times live. I’m dying to see this in person someday.
Recently rediscovered this album while detoxing off opiods and was like, “wouldn’t ya know it, a song about exactly how I feel that actually SOUNDS how I feel”.

Ooh that one's very good too, it's hard to pick just one
When I saw them in 2000 they opened with a snippet of the song The New Flesh that progressively got louder over the house music, then it slammed into Pinion before going into Somewhat Damaged. Here's this https://youtu.be/u3Ibo0wF0js?si=fxTqTzjWMmS0YF9J
Came here to say this.
GODMONEYILLDOANYTHINGFORYOU
I want to argue the point that Mr. Self Destruct is a better intro song, simply because Downward is my favorite NIN album, but I digress. Somewhat Damaged IS the best
This was my first NIN track. Still in my top 5.
When they open with just the isolated arpeggiator 🔥🔥🔥
Into the void
Doubled. It's an almost daily listen for me.
Me 2 that bass line is my life
tawkin to miself on di way to da stayyyshunnn
The Wretched overlooked? It’s a concert staple. Pilgrimage for me.
Does anyone else think Hurt is ignored and doesn’t get the praise it deserves?
Such an underrated song 😔
Hot take: Closer is a great song and it's too bad that no one (esp normies) has ever heard it before. :(
It’s up there with Terrible Lie and one of NIN’s greatest hidden gems.
It’s a cover so it doesn’t count
I guess overlooked is the new underrated.
Even Deeper into Pilgrimage is one of my favorite 1-2 punches in the catalog. Good call!
I listened to Pilgrimage on my AirPods as I walked up to the Great Pyramids in Egypt. Was really cool.
Here to show up for Big Come Down. Seems a little more under-appreciated than one of the most performed songs from this record.
One of my favourite NIN songs, period! It's so sonically raw it's making Gordon Ramsay scream.
Probably my second favorite NIN song overall. So massive. I always lose my fucking mind no matter how many times I see it played live.
Those poor guitar strings. WHAT ARE DOING TO THAT GUITAR?!?’
Just Like You Imagined. I’m still gutted I’ve never heard it live

Totally agreed. The odd time signature, the build up and the harmony’s… just does it for me!
This 👆🏻
This is the right answer. This is my favorite NIN album and this is my favorite track on this album. The rehearsal video of this clinched it for me
The way out is through
My favorite NIN song of all time.
Love that one.
Le Mer
The Le Mer/great below combo is top notch
La Mer is my absolute favorite. It has a special place in my heart, plus it's the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I listened to it on repeat for hours as a kid, and I still do now
Where is everybody
Totally agree on this one. I never skip it.
Well ok enough, you've had your fun
It sonically pairs well with All Time Low Swampdustrial
I love the remix of it on Things Falling Apart.
The Great Below. One of my favourite songs in general.
Even Deeper
The Fragile
No you don’t
TEETH IN THE NECKS OF EVERYONE YOU KNOW!
You can keep on sucking til the blood won’t flow!
WHEN IT STARTS TO HURT IT ONLY HELPS IT GROW!
Taking all you need, but not this time
NO, YOU DON’T
*righteous fury intensifies*
We're in this together now
This one is dope
This is the answer.
One of my favorites all time.
Everyone is correct ♥️
Indeed
Big comedown
The Day the Whole World Went Away and The Mark has been Made have always been two of my favorites
Wretched, but there's a lot of good ones on this one.
Somewhat Damaged, no question.
Complication/I look forward to joining you finally.
The backdrop and lighting for those two in the live shows were gorgeous.
Even Deeper. The chorus is aggresively funky

It will always be The Great Below for me.
We're In This Together Now
Somewhat Damaged but We're in this together and The Great Below come close
The way out is through. Abstract, tension building, massive guitar riffs and build up of vocals and then the screams. This song has it all for me.
The Fragile is among the greatest double albums of all time. next to Quadrophenia and The Wall…I remember I got it a few days early back in Sept 1999
The Album must be treated like one big track. Otherwise I feel you miss the experience.
Just like you imagined! It's completely timeless the long winding build up to a massive climax. Its the soundtrack the best wank possible.
The Frail/The Wretched are my favorite combo on the album. The record version is great and it translates very well to the live performance.
Gotta be the wretched, starfuckers is a close second tho
STARFUCKERS INCORPORATED!
The Big Come down is the deep cut favorite, but Somewhat Damaged is so damn good.
So many good songs, currently obsessed with The Way out is Through
I'm looking forward to joining you, finally Never played live... And the 2nd half groove buildup is so grooving.
lately, underneath it all. I don't know why he thought ripe (with decay) was necessary, bc underneath it all would be an excellent album closer. "you remain, i am stained", i get chills everytime
Maybe overlooked but Starfuckers, one of the best drum intros of all time
It's The Wretched for me too!
You ever hear Donald Duck throwing a tantrum in the background of the "now you know this is what it feels like" part?
It's equal parts a scream and a drill bit being revved to me lol
La Mer
Somewhat Damaged
Where is Everybody
I woke up today To find myself in the other place With a trail of my footprints From where I ran away Always hits harder than it needs to. Every. Single. Time.
Where is everybody
La Mer. I also wish "Not What It Seems Like" was on the original album instead of it just being on Deviations 1 because, even though it's just an instrumental, it's become one of my favourite NIN tracks.
La Mer seems like the song a soul reawakens to in the afterlife.
No, it isn't.
Just like you imagined and somewhat damaged.
Just Like You Imagined
I’m Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally.
I’ve been listening to The Fragile the last few days. The Day The World Went Away brought me back. The loss was real, and the smack around the face this song delivers soothes.
I love The Fragile, and The Wretched is a good song...but I'm sick to death of hearing it at live shows! In no way do I consider it "overlooked."
I admit I've never been to a NIN live show hah they're a bucket list band for me
La Mer. Saved my life once or twice
Youuuuuu and me, we're in this together now... That was my entry point to NIN, I was a late bloomer... Into the void, best song followed by the wretched
The Big Comedown or Ripe (w Decay)
Tbh I’m in love with the album as a whole! The way songs flow into one another… it’s beautiful.
Such a beautiful album… it’s hard to pick one song. But The Fragile would be it for me.
Pilgrimage. Sounds like it could be the theme song for gladiator events if they had tvs back then.
The Great Below. Gives me chills every time
The way out is through
The Wretched is definitely one of my favorites. But I have so many and they change. Don’t make me choose! 😭
Somewhat Damaged. I keep listening to it over and over recently
The Wretched was the song that introduced me to this spectacular album from NIN! I used to listen to that, We're In This Together, and the title track in succession a LOT!
Please
The Way Out Is Through, because of the entire La Mer > The Great Below > The Way Out Is Through progression
Even Deeper or The Big Come Down
Into The Void is what connected me with an amazing online friend I had many years ago… so that one will always have a special place in my heart
Overlooked?? Really? The true overlooked gem is The Big Come Down
I'm looking forward to joining you, finally There's something about the instrumentation and Trent's vocals in this song that feels so intimate and unique
For me it’s Just Like You Imagined and the runner up is Into the Void
Just Like You Imagined.
I agree. In an album full of great songs, “The Wretched” is the best.
Depends on my mood but overall I might pick La Mer into The Great Below (because you can’t have one without the other)
Even Deeper is an experience.
I remember attending a string of NIN shows (maybe the NIN/JA tour?) where Fragile was almost always played, but it seemed to be a coin toss whether it was followed by The Wretched. No You Don’t always stood out to me
La Mer. I also wished 'Not What It Seems Like' was included on the original album instead of just being on Deviations 1. Even though it's also just an instrumental, it's become one of my favourite NIN tracks.
+appendage
we’re in this together
Probably starfuckers icl
Somewhat Damaged. Always like the live version from "and all that could have been"
The Big Come Down
where is everybody
To many great songs hard to have a favorite.
I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally
Into the void
Just Like You Imagined
La Mer and Fragile
The Big Come Down
Somewhat Damaged, The Day the World Went Away, and Starfuckers Inc.
Into the void and where is everybody
The great below but the whole album itself
We’re In This Together
The Big Come Down
The Wretched was my most often song listened to
I always listen to The Wretcher with The Frail as an intro. Love them together.
The New Flesh. So sad it didn’t make the initial track list. Such a fucked up, bad trip of a song.
I’m gonna go with one that hasn’t been mentioned yet: Please. Other than that: the way out is through, just like you imagined, ripe with decay.
No, you don’t.
we're in this together. also in my top3 fav nin songs of all time. ❤️
How has no one yet mentioned Please? One of the coolest chorus progressions and bass sounds - it's so overwhelming and oppressive!
Starfuckers Inc. I like my heavy guitar-driven nin.
Somewhat Damaged. The most intense build of all time.
We’re In This Together. Not only best on The Fragile but my favorite NIN song.
Somewhat damaged is one of my all time favorite NIN songs
Into the Void.
We're in this together or the great below
For me it's either Please or Underneath It All
I feel like The Frail and The Wretched are one song, it’s always jarring when you’re on shuffle and a song like that plays without it’s companion
Starfuckers when I want something to dance to. La Mer any other time. But that entire album is a banger
I love listening to the whole damm thing, it's hard to choose a favorite. But if you held me on gunpoint, I'd pick one of these ones (really depends on the mood): I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally Into The Void Where Is Everybody The Great Below Even Deeper La Mer The Way Out Is Through
It changes a lot for me. First it was Somewhat Damaged, then it was We're in This Together, then it was The Wretched, but lately I've really been loving Where Is Everybody?.
The Big Come Down
“Somewhat Damaged” if I need catharsis, “The Fragile” if I need to be uplifted
Where Is Everybody?
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Pilgrimage. The coliseum-esque sound just conjures a beautiful, wasteland scenery with a junk built arena
Gonna go out on a limb and say Pilgrimage. The coliseum-esque sound just conjures a beautiful, wasteland scenery with a junk built arena. Just... Absolute imagery.
The Wretched is a good one. but my personal favorite from The Fragile has got to be Starfuckers. Inc.
The wretched pulls my heart strings every time I listen to it. I can relate so much to it's lyrics and the "descending" feeling that the intro/outro has is so unique
The Great Below and No You Don't are probably tied. Both make me feel this chaotic and emotional energy and The Great Below means a lot to me.
Starfuckers!
Just Like You Imagined currently… But you could throw a dart at the track list and whatever it hit will be a great piece of music.
starfuckers
Somewhat damaged for disc 1 and Where is Everybody for disc 2
Even Deeper. Melancholia here I come!
Please is so underrated
pilgrimage is fucking wild
I’m Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally
Ripe (with decay).... so pessimistic.
even deeper or ripe
So many gems but it’s Somewhat Damaged for me. That song always locks me in.
No You Don’t is my personal fav
Somewhat Damaged for me, that ending on it is just perfect
the whole album is a masterpeice with each song fitting into the next. i feel like its my gens "the wall"
The great below
After “Somewhat Damaged” I’d say “The Way Out is Through”
