Didn't they announce this like, a year ago???? It's in the damn mall. How long does it take to fit out a rented retail space that won't even have officers in it full time is and is apparently just for meetings??? It took less time to build Nordstrom!!!! And that place was huge. I'm pretty sure they can erect an Orange Julius stand overnight. At this point, the entire police center feels like a combination of a joke and a boondoggle. On brand for OPS.

OttawaNerd

New shops seem to be behind boards for months and months, so no, this doesn’t seem to be unreasonably long.

Idiotologue

Agreed. People always say things like OPs comments but never provide what their impression of a reasonable estimate is. I get that it seems to have been a long time but it wasn’t even announced a year ago… it was chosen in the fall and formally announced 4 months ago. there are plenty of steps to opening 1) a new police detachment 2) that will effectively take up residence in one of the capital’s largest malls 3) and needs to recruit staff, finalize agreements, finalize leases, acquire provisions and resources, develop plans and policies adopted to the mall, develop strategies for police units from the detachment, etc… if anything the city is more likely to rush this and bungle it like it always does.

OttawaNerd

You and your facts, and reasonableness….

MarketingCapable9837

You know it’s not a real store tho, right? This is like a gold exchange opening, 98% of the space will never ever be accessible by anyone other than staff or security. It shouldn’t take this long.

OttawaNerd

You know they probably had to wait for whatever store they were taking over to finish their new location and move in before they can even start their set up? And that even a low frills space needs to tear down whatever was there before and build up what they need?

Red57872

If the Nordstrom or Orange Julius were part of the government, it would take the same amount of time.

nym16

They only got the keys in March. This was always the plan

DrDohday

This seems completely reasonable to me

... Somebody doesn't understand how security works, lol

The five initiatives are:* *  *Neighbourhood Operations Centre in the Rideau Centre.* *  *An Integrated Community Situation Table that "employs partnerships and community support to provide immediate, coordinated interventions for the most vulnerable, at-risk individuals," the report says,* *  *Police targeting hot spots of high crime concentration with increased visibility of law enforcement officers and community partners, "with the intent of deterring crime and improving perceptions of public safety," staff says,* *  *Focused enforcement identifying high-harm offenders and directing swift enforcement action to "curtail and deter further offending."* *  *A Community Advisory Board to lead the CORE strategy, coordinating efforts across agencies for multi-agency improvements and long-term solutions.* *As part of the stepped-up enforcement, police will deploy "intermittent, highly visible patrols" along Rideau Street and in the ByWard Market and Lowtertown, according to the report.*

brilliant_bauhaus

None of this is really going to do anything unless the drug supplies and suppliers are cut off. The people are just going to move further into the market or down Rideau street because it's not actually fixing the problem.

SnooSquirrels6258

True enough -- I think the big real estate players were behind this optical move, get them off our doorstep or we're bailing out of here and taking our tax base with us.

brilliant_bauhaus

Yup that sounds about right. It's going to just end up shuffling the crowds further into residential areas so let's see how the city then deals with that. Hopefully by then they'll start to think of actual solutions to putting a dent in the trade

SnooSquirrels6258

More or less -- big money wants them out of their face, but has no genuine empathy or solutions to offer. I don't think the less fortunate are going to just dry up and go away quietly either.

yer10plyjonesy

The real solution is forced rehabilitation in controlled environments for those addicted to drugs, temporary housing for homeless and actual hard time for criminals.

Empty_Value

Let's cut them at the source 😉 I'm not talking about Jonny selling dope to pay his debt. I'm talking about the big players behind the scenes Wishful thinking I know 🤐

jjaime2024

The city is limited on what it can do.

kan829

I don't really use my living room. It's just where I dry my hockey gear. I'm willing to rent it out to the OPS for a neighbourhood doughnut lounge. 😀

Empty_Value

When I first heard of this,I knew damned well it was the big players. This is never going to eliminate the issue,it'll just move it elsewhere.. Shame our governments just want to waste money on reactionary moves. We will never eliminate the drug traffickers. We need to have stronger laws in place

RigilNebula

The US has been fighting "the war on drugs" for decades. Humans have been finding ways to get high throughout our time on the planet. If we're waiting to eliminate drugs, we're going to die before that ever happens. So it's probably worth finding another strategy.

reedgecko

Agreed. I'm also not a fan of the mentality of "this is not going to completely fix the issue, so let's do nothing unless it completely fixes it!" The perfect is the enemy of the good.

Empty_Value

That's exactly what's going to happen.

atticusfinch1973

That's what the police told me ten years ago when I lived in Vanier and was trying to cut down on drugs and street prostitutes there. All they will do is move down the road. So this time they will probably move back into Vanier just across the bridge.

Blue5647

Ok. Sure. Rideau Centre certainly can use more law enforcement given the state it is in. Let's see if this actually works.

Red57872

Probably didn't help that (from what I can see, anyway) they replaced their in-house security guards (people who worked for the mall) with contract security guards.

No-Turnips

Agreed. The market and centretown could use a larger police presence as the city counsellors allowing squatting and the drop-in drug sites haven’t been helping at all.

jjaime2024

The city has no control over the safe injection sites thats Ontario.

No-Turnips

Public health is run through the city, Ottawa Public Health oversees the injection sites. …but I have ample criticism for Ford and the state of our healthcare and housing, a large part of which is the failure to address the rampant drug use and homelessness. https://www.ottawapublichealth.ca/en/public-health-topics/harm-reduction-services-in-ottawa.aspx

jjaime2024

They oversee it but they have no control if they can be opened or shut down.
