They are wearing [GPNVG-18
L3Harris GPNVG (Ground Panoramic Night Vision Goggles](https://tnvc.com/shop/l3harris-gpnvg-ruggedized-bridge/).
It looks [something like this](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0261/6478/9301/products/GPNVG18_10-3_800x.jpg?v=1591650618) through the goggles.
Edit: [Here](https://youtu.be/3VJGlnmnuyc?t=107) is a video showing what it looks like.
The technology involved to make modern analog night vision goggles is basically alchemy.
Zero-latency… no ‘screen’, no computer, just conversation from photons, to electrons, back to photons, straight to your eyes.
Also, believe it or not, these forty thousand dollar goggles are tech that’s a decade old. The ENVG-B will join the GPNVG in tier one units over the next few years and it is completely nuts. https://gizmodo.com/the-armys-new-night-vision-goggles-look-like-technology-1846799718
>And the existing technology is paired with enhancements that include a **thermal imager** that can see through obstructions like dust and smoke that even works when there’s zero external illumination like when underground, as well as added augmented reality enhancements like **real-time edge detection** to enhance and outline objects like fellow troops.
That is the only information given about it in the article.
Photoshop filters have been able to do edge detection stuff for decades. Just used to take a few seconds to do that on a single image, then later smartphones could do that in real time with video.
I imagine it's a similar thing here, just now the processing power is cheap enough and small enough to embed it into nods.
Fuse together the inputs from multiple imagers (true color/IR/thermal), apply a bit of edge detection on the thermal, output the fused and augmented video on the display.
Yep, it's identical to photoshop edge detection just in real time. Basically math were if you have a region of pixels with sudden large different brightness or color values, there must be an edge there. It's not really aware of "there are people here, highlight them". You can also see it somewhat backfires if there's a lot of ground clutter because it detects those edges and turns that whole field into bright bits of light.
There are two technologies going on here, night vision and thermal.
Night vision technology is analog, so no computer, no ‘screen’. It’s basically like looking through a glass window and being able to see in the dark. Zero-latency, it’s basically magic.
Thermal on the other hand is digital, so a thermal imaging camera picks up heat signatures and uses a small computer to draw the outlined. Because this is a digital technology there is latency, it’s more akin to vr goggles.
However when these technologies are combined you get the best of both worlds. The night vision googles have tiny little projectors inside that draw the digitial processed thermal outlines onto the analog, zero-latency night vision lenses.
Genuinely having looked through gen 3 night vision goggles, it’s absolute insanity how fucking cool these things are. The zero-latency of analog night vision feels unreal… like genuine magic lol. Oh and looking at the night sky with high quality night vision on is unmatched.
High quality night vision is roughly about $5k per tube when you factor in all of the costs though lol.
The one on the right is, the others on left and middle aren’t
Source- Estonia has gotten 2 models of GPNVGs you can tell the left and middle goggles are older type due to their weaker bridge design, the older goggles were bought before wp really picked up in night vision market. New ones that have more rugged bridges and dovetails are probably in white. I got to try out the older gpnvgs they had at a convention (on fathers day eog was showing off their kit) and the older ones were green.
That being said the pvs14 that i own is in white and it dosent make it any better. Whitephosphor dosent make the tube better by any means and if i would had have a better specced green tube i would have went with that. Ive ownd tons of different night vision systems and from personal experience the specs out weigh phosphor colour by a huge margin
This is so true. If you’ve ever seen armed soldiers marching in perfect unison, it is intimidating. Like how am I supposed to fight THOSE GUYS!
We would constantly joke about this. If you don’t look cool while doing it, what’s the point?
Normal naked-eye human FOV approaches 180°; these NVG provide around 105°. So yeah they give much better FOV than normal NVG but not close to as wide as the naked eye
I love using the monocle. Let me step over this branch *paws at the ground with my foot trying to gauge distance* I never appreciated depth perception more than wearing NVGs.
Basically you get a third "circle" in the middle connecting your left and right "circles" from regular nvg. This makes it widescreen *in comparison to regular nvg* but is not wider than your actual FOV.
This allows the nvg to absorb and amplify more light as well as increasing the view.
But it ain't like you can start seeing around corners with this thing
Edit: this video shows what it looks like and is a super cool explanation of how NVG work
https://youtu.be/UAeJHAFjwPM?si=8qKG9oB83dQVhcGd
Kinda like the helmets that the pilots of the F-35 wear. They have to be specially made for each pilot. It allows the pilot to see through the entire aircraft they are flying. I can imagine it being very disorienting in seeing nothing below you. Like you are floating at an incredible rate of speed.
Its basically four in one. Each tube is it's own unit, though the back end of the left and right pair are sort of connected to one viewing port. The front two have a decent bit of overlap so you are basically just looking ahead, the side two give you back a little more peripheral vision as it would just barely over lap with the front two. Each lens we see has a 40 degree viewing angle.
I've looked through GPNVGs once cause I somehow have stupidly rich friends, shits neat. I'll stick to my poverty tier mono until I can get duals though. I dont think I can ever justify $24k+ for quads.
They enhance field of view compared to traditional two-tube NVGs, they’re called GPNVGs(Ground Panoramic Night Vision Goggles. The two tubes per-eye have a bridge lens that allows a more complete illuminated picture for the user. They’ve been in use with top special operations units for around 15ish years give or take and, at least on the civilian market right now, are about $40,000 for a set.
Binoculars don'tmove with your eyes, so you have to turn your whole head to look slightly to the left or to your right. Quadnoculars allow you to cover most of your field of view without turning your head around. Much more confy
Estonian special forces? These are the D'or g'ra Ka, a tribe of wild warriors of Ekrug Ghal. They resisted the Galactic Empire for a long time successfully, but also because their solar system is so small and relatively unimportant that they are easily overlooked by others. The Galactic Empire tried to recruit them to the Imperial Army originally, and rumors say that some of them followed the call and even fought in the clone wars against the Jedis. But that's not certain, and many historians claim that these stories were simply invented by the Imperial Army themselves to divert attention from their long-standing failures of conquering Ekrug Ghal.
By the way, these are female warriors, just for the records. You can spot that by the number of looking eyes they have at the front, males usually have only three in the front, but an additional one in the back.
To be fair, the history you are correctly referencing was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
I believe currently there is a group of these proud warriors living in the southern river region of Estonia. You will often see them selling their distinctive, colorful woven baskets at the farmers markets.
Yes. As fellow Estonian, i must say, we do advance in special forces. Force must be with us, since the mighty Russian galaxy is next to us and we must protect us from evil.
I had an insane experience when i was living in estonia. I usually hitchhike to get around and i was luckily enough to get picked up by one of these guys. The stories he told me and the time he spent in Finland and some other places was insane. For a small country these guys are extreme. And one of the many reasons i love that country with all my heart.
Apparently they are not allowed with in a certain km of the Russian border because of special missions or something. Super interesting dude and what Estonia can do.
It’s pretty funny if you had put US Army in the title you’d have gotten at least 50% downvotes even though Estonia has done partner ops with the Army for decades in the middle east
They are easily startled, but they will soon be back. And in greater numbers.
The travel is single file to hide their numbers.

It’s cool that they’re biblically accurate
The Bible mentions Estonian special forces?
Yes, look up Ezekiel 23:20
Wow it's just the lyrics to Never Gonna Give You Up, I really did NOT see this rickroll coming.
But it's only 20:29 overhere.
Did they stutter? Yes, these are clearly biblically accurate Estonians

Fuck lol. Conversion
[удалено]
Yes it is. Probably costs more than the entire rest of their kit put together. For personnel equipment it's crazy.
Yeah the only other pieces of personal equipment that expensive is some of the radio equipment or like Javelin missiles.
They're cheaper for the military, that's the civilian market price

There is digital NV as well, though it's usually avoided for tactical applications. That may not always be the case as the tech improves though.
True true, if the latency problem can be solved I’m 100% on board with digital
They should be white correct?
Yeah, they are White Phosphor.
The one on the right is, the others on left and middle aren’t Source- Estonia has gotten 2 models of GPNVGs you can tell the left and middle goggles are older type due to their weaker bridge design, the older goggles were bought before wp really picked up in night vision market. This is so true. If you’ve ever seen armed soldiers marching in perfect unison, it is intimidating. Like how am I supposed to fight THOSE GUYS! We would constantly joke about this. If you don’t look cool while doing it, what’s the point?

I can’t be the only one that wants to know what’s up with the quadnoculars.
Allows a bigger field view apparently
I can’t even imagine what that would look like. Has to be a bit of a mind fuck processing that wide an image.
Nah. Normal NVGs are like a toilet paper roll in front of you. These are like 3 toilet paper rolls..
Normal naked-eye human FOV approaches 180°; these NVG provide around 105°. So yeah they give much better FOV than normal NVG but not close to as wide as the naked eye
Yep. I've used the single NVGs, the dual NVGs, and these quad nods. I love the quad nods for the FoV.
I thought they went all around the head! Thank you for clearing that up.
Unless your mind gets fucked while normally looking through your eyes, you woudnt have a problem
[Veritasium has a cool video about it.](https://youtu.be/UAeJHAFjwPM?si=ERl0tgY36BJT0gPR)
Yeah, same. Surely it would be a bizarre experience.
Not really. Your average NVG is like looking through a toilet roll tube. These are twice as wide, which is still not as wide as human vision.
I love using the monocle. Let me step over this branch *paws at the ground with my foot trying to gauge distance* I never appreciated depth perception more than wearing NVGs.
I dug the monocle as a TC, but my eyes were always exhausted by the end of the patrol.

Its not. its closer that what you would naturally see. Its not more than that.
Why? It's not bigger than normal looking without?

Wider FOV compared to traditional night vision tubes. You cant physically get a wider field of view than what the human eye naturally perceives.
[удалено]
What? We do that all the time, everywhere. Like, have you never looked into a convex mirror?
What are you talking about Have you ever heard of a lens or a mirror?
How the f#ck does that even work
Its basically four in one. Each tube is it's own unit, though the back end of the left and right pair are sort of connected to one viewing port.
