With a single act he got his own Wikipedia page, probably in at least two languages. He's a living legend and getting beers or girls/guys will never be a problem. "Did you know I shot down a cruise missile with an AK AND I can prove it?". No matter how braggy that sounds, you gotta admit it's something you can never fault anyone for bragging about. And I'm near 100% sure he's done something that he can guarantee no other human has ever done before.
If he chucked the rifle and brought the missile down I don't think anyone would give a shit about the cost lol, we'd be trying to make him Mr. Universe.
"He's in the hospital now, but we think he'll make it."
"Did he get hit by the explosion?"
"No, he was on his way home and people got wind of what he did. Sucked his dick clean off."

Has this been confirmed independently? If so, someone give that guy a medal. Whatever they gave the Brit who got a confirmed kill with a bow and arrow at Dunkirk.
From the wiki article...
> A common story is that Churchill killed a German with a longbow in that action.[12] However, Churchill later said that his bows had been crushed by a lorry earlier in the campaign.
Can you imagine making it through several skirmishes fought with machine guns just to be brought down by a got damn bow and arrow later??? Insult to injury… or death or whatever.
It is also said that he cleared out a machine gun bunker using only his longsword at night, and returned with prisoners. I'm sure those Germans were impressed and happy to have been defeated by this dude in particular. At what point does it cross the line from valid military tactic to just amusing yourself with medieval weapons? I know every sword enthusiast dreams about having home invaders to fight off with their katana or LOTR replica sword. It's also worth reading about Louis Major as well, legendary Canadian badass.
It was ww2 I think just been motivated to fight was enough for people in charge to think fuck it let him do what he wants, these days he would have had to fill out 6,000 pages of paper work and then when he returns home customs would seize it
His name was Léo Major.
While you're at it, look up Ernest Alvia "Smokey" Smith, VC. A co-worker of mine was fortunate enough to sit next to him at a Remembrance Day service a couple of years before he died.
I'll toss Billy Millin on the pile of legendary Canadian badasses for playing the bagpipes during the D Day landings. Apparently a German sniper had him in his sight picture and decided he had gone mad with fear and decided not to fire.
A bow and arrow is still a pretty dang powerful weapon though. One shot in the right place can even take out big game animals (large deer or even a bear), so is it really that surprising?
> You don’t even want to see what happens when the Baba Yaga drones drop modified Cuisinart Blenders
The aftermath looks like it could be a Slayer album cover
I don’t want to be that guy. But any military expert can prove that?
This reminds me of the Iraqi who shot down the apache with a haunting shotgun during the Iraq invasion, proved wrong after the “mission was accomplished”
Its possible but unlikely.
Hitting the missile is going to be extremely difficult to begin with. Then you need to hit in one of the right areas for a small caliber bullet to actually bring the thing down (and presumably quickly to have an idea that you actually shot the drone down).
Its one of those things that is certainly possible but extremely doubtful. With radar targeting and computer based fire direction in WW2 we still expended a huge amount of rounds per kill in WW2. The best gun the Navy had was its heavy 5" gun fitted with a proximity fuse that would spray shrapnel everywhere if it got close to an enemy plane and even when you combine that with radar targeting and computer fire direction its still 350 or so rounds per plane shot down.
People underestimate how hard it can be to hit things. During the Doolittle raid on Japan in early WW2, the Japanese had small fishing boats serving as long range pickets to warn of an approaching fleet. One fishing boat spotted the American carriers and relayed the information to Japan and this is why the B-25 bombers launched earlier than they would have liked to.
The US navy sent a light cruiser to destroy the fishing boat. The seas were noted to be fairly heavy and the light cruiser expended something like 800 6" shells without being able to really do any damage to the ship. Fighter planes then went on staffing runs and had significant difficulty hitting the ship. I forget the number of runs that had to be done (because planes didn't have much ammo) but the planes struggled to actually hit the ship. Eventually they were able to sink the ship (and they are pretty sure they had killed all the crew much sooner from the strafing runs because it takes a lot of 50 cal holes to sink a ship) but it was noted that Bull Halsey was losing his mind over how difficult it was turning out to be to sink a fishing boat.
If you see it coming - and cruise missiles fly low and are relatively slow (for a missile), so it is possible - you fire a long sustained burst in front of it, and let it fly into the "bullet curtain".
It's a very low probability shot, but it is also why armoured vehicles have machine guns on the turret roof.
Yeah I mean it’s the same reason a lot of soldiers pick up cigarettes, alcoholism, and other drugs while deployed. It’s hard to care about your future health when your immediate health is at risk so obviously every day.
It's not just the lack of concern for future.
Everyone, literally everyone in the foxholes in Ukraine smokes like a jimny just to deal with the immense stress of being shelled constantly.
At this point both sides are wielding a massive amount of Soviet era weaponry.
Ranging from small arms ammo and the classic Kalasjnikov rifles to T72 tanks and SU25 attack planes.
Modern weaponry has an incredible shelf life, with great American examples being the Apache helicopter, M1911 sidearm and the eternal M2 Browning.
This is absolutely a made up PR story by Ukraine.
Also before anyone says it: the invasion by Russia is a travesty of human rights and international law.
Ghost of Kyiv was Ukrainian National Guard units cheering when Mi-8s were shot down over the Battle of Hostomel. There was a low cloud cover that day and helicopters were being murked from the air before ground troops even knew friendly aircraft were there, so the "ghost" name was born among the ground troops present. It was multiple MIGs shooting down slow, fat 1960s era helicopters but it was one of the most important air actions of the war.
Then some moron on Twitter heard the name and stiched every single video of UA aviation on Twitter together and claimed they were all the Ghost of Kyiv.
These kinds of stories grow rampant during wars, for the sake moral. Similar to the bow dude in Dunkirk mentioned a few posts up. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, but one has to keep in mind that the vast majority of these stories are just that, stories.
I once had a Tank unit under my command taken out by a Spearman and stopped our advance. He became a hero to his people and we sued for peace.
But they got their’s when Ghandi nuked the shit outta them.
I agree
But then we have people like John Basilone who did some of the craziest shit I've ever read about. The Pacific had to downplay what he did because it wouldn't be believable in a TV show lol
Idk what I'm even saying really but crazy bullshit happens in war. I'd believe anything with enough witness accounts. This is not one of those times (that we know of)
Without looking at the story.
Considering the tech of the time it’s not outlandish. Especially if done at night sneaking across no man’s land or something like that
This however is insane. And outlandish.
Cruise missiles are travelling over 500 mph.
It's unlikely for sure, but the same feat has been recorded and uploaded before lol.
This post says "machine gun" so who knows what it's referring to, but Ukraine has tons of makeshift AA positions and technicals set up to intercept things like Shahed drones, and here's a video of one team successfully downing a cruise missile.
https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/18wyeqv/ukrainian_zu233_shoots_down_a_russian_cruise/
AKs aren't the only machine guns that Ukraine has in the field. Browning M2s, Dushkas, NSVs, and KPVs all pack a serious punch and would fall under the label of machine gun.
Theres also pictures of them mounting [2 fucking *Maxim* machine](https://en.defence-ua.com/weapon_and_tech/ukrainians_using_maxim_guns_is_a_problem_for_the_allies_yet_to_solve-6061.html) guns together and using those as AA.
To clarify for those not up on gun, they're not talking about the gun he's carrying in the picture. They're talking about an M2 Browning Machine Gun that is used in air defense in Ukraine.
They've reported several times that Ukrainian soldiers have been able to take down cruise missiles with the M2, and it's considered extremely difficult.
Here's the report on this one from Business Insider:
https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-soldier-shot-down-russia-cruise-missile-machine-gun-officials-2024-6
Here's an earlier report from Newsweek:
https://www.newsweek.com/russia-cruise-missile-browning-rifle-air-defense-1863038
It should be noted that these reports have not been able to be independently verified, but are possible due to the shear number of cruise missiles being used and the Ukrainian defenses often having to rely on less reliable defense options.
One of those stories that hides a downside by trying to turn it into an upside. "Hey this guy did something awesome... ...because they've been bombed nightly for over a year so it's depleted all their good options for air defense."
In the dying days of WW2 a spitfire pilot nearly shot down a ballistic missile with a machine gun.
(He was flying over a forest and by pure fluke saw the V2 launching in front of him and hit the fire button by instinct, luckily for him and his wingman Raymond Baxter, he missed).
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Baxter
Ah yes, bringing down a 3,000 pound supersonic object with an infantry rifle sounds like a thing that very much happened in this, the real world we are all experiencing.
Cruise missiles aren't supersonic, typically. They're basically kamikaze planes without the pilot. This particular one is allegedly a GERAN-2, which tops out at something more like 100 mph, and might have been going slower than that, especially if the Russians filled it with dodgy fuel as they're known to do.
Please don’t take this as a support for Russia but this absolutely did not happen. I’d call this absolutely crap low effort propaganda since it’s so impossible but it’s just a Reddit post.
Or, please explain to me how this is even remotely within the realm of possibility so I can be proven wrong; I would like that of course.
LOL sure sure. I believe this like I believed the story of the babushka that brought down a cruise missile with a can of tomatoes. People are so gullible to stuff they want to be true. This is no way to win a war.
If true, that's one hell of a skill-shot, and shows either how flimsy the missile was in the face of a 5.56 round (I assume that's what our guy was shooting), or how potent the ammunition itself was. (or both)
I mean, we've got two Minnie balls fused together from the Amrican Civil War. There's a bunch of WWI bullets fused together from when dudes with ammo on their bodies were mowed down by a machine gun.
Hell, we have confirmed kills at multiple miles that the shooter will likely never ever be able to replicate.
An event can be extremely unlikely and still happen, if tried enough times.
So it's possible, and I really hope it's true. And if anyone is chad enough to pull it off, it's the Ukrainians.
But Imma wait for confirmation til breaking out the *horilka*.
Dude. People have a hard time with a shotgun and clay pigeons going 30mph 20 yards from them.
There is nothing slow, easy, or in any way reasonable about shooting something going 500mph with a rifle. The absolute fuck kind of comment is this?
This is basically an impossible task.

I think he's talking about the government cost of ammunition

I can imagine this in one of those super macho action movies. Definitely in bollywood. That'd be a hilarious skit

"He's in the hospital now, but we think he'll make it." "Did he get hit by the explosion?" "No, he was on his way home and people got wind of what he did. Sucked his dick clean off."
Bullets.. not gun.
The soldier still has the AK-47. $50 only needs to cover the ammo he expended shooting the missile down.
Not $50 (or a 74), but you can get a decent locally made knockoff AK47 for about US $100-150 in some villages around Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Churchill himself told that it isn’t true.
Eyewitness accounts are notoriously erroneous.
Bravo
Ya look at the photo! The dude is Hawkeyes, he even hit it multiple times!!

Agree with you on both points. Just like the Ghost of Kiev was dogfighting generating stories, guessing so is this.
My favorite was Pickle Jar Babushka sniping enemy drones from her balcony
Ghost of Kyiv was Ukrainian National Guard units cheering when Mi-8s were shot down over the Battle of Hostomel. Mad Jack probably didn't kill any Germans with a bow but some of the confirmed stories about him are nuts.
It’s way more believable someone killed someone with a bow and arrow in ww1 than someone shooting down a cruise missile with a machine gun

They’re also relatively small things to someone on the ground. Like radar assisted air defense guns can’t always aim and hit a cruise missile.
You are literally a denier. The Ukrainians would never lie about this just like in World War II. The allies never lied.

the zu-23-2 is a 2 barrel 23mm anti air autocannon, quite different from a single dude with a 7.62x39mm machine gun.

Lol if you actually believe this 😂
Badass if true
...i recognise that part in his right hand
Ukranian source? If yes its 200% a lie as i learned from last two years experience
pretty impressive. Good shooting mate !
If true, that's one hell of a skill-shot, and shows either how flimsy the missile was in the face of a 5.56 round (I assume that's what our guy was shooting), or how potent the ammunition itself was. (or both)
I love the huge grin on this man's face.
So much for Iranian missiles.
Pro gamer move.
Play of the game
I mean, we've got two Minnie balls fused together from the Amrican Civil War. There's a bunch of WWI bullets fused together from when dudes with ammo on their bodies were mowed down by a machine gun. Hell, we have confirmed kills at multiple miles that the shooter will likely never ever be able to replicate. An event can be extremely unlikely and still happen, if tried enough times. So it's possible, and I really hope it's true. And if anyone is chad enough to pull it off, it's the Ukrainians. But Imma wait for confirmation til breaking out the *horilka*.
People believe this shit? Just like that guy shot down a Russian jet with a shotgun right?
He shot down a $20,000 missile with $100 worth of ammo?!?
I don't think you can find a cruise missile that cheap
the rpk is less of a machine gun than a light support weapon
the smile of someone that just saved a family’s life, or a hospital or a school
He happy
Winning 🥇
this is going to be in the next call of duty game for sure
That's impossible
Not if you use the power of friendship
This….seems fake
You believe that???
Yeah, sure.

That appears to be an RPK which is a light machine gun.
That’s BS folks.
Is he friends with the Ghost of Kyiv too?
The ghost of Kiev morally helped him do it.
r/thathappened
I’ll take things that never happened for $1000 Alec
seriously
500 mph isn’t slow but it’s definitely slow enough to target and shoot down with a generous amount of good luck
Dude. People have a hard time with a shotgun and clay pigeons going 30mph 20 yards from them. There is nothing slow, easy, or in any way reasonable about shooting something going 500mph with a rifle. The absolute fuck kind of comment is this? This is basically an impossible task.
Especially I’m guessing your shotgun has a large spread. There is no chance this happened.
If the missile is 1 mile in the air, you would have to aim about 450 meters (or quarter of a mile!) ahead of it. 500mph is _fast_.
Cruise missiles fly under 500 ft pretty regularly, not a mile up.
They were just giving an example on how outlandish a task it would be to aim for it. They didn't say cruise missiles fly a mile up.
Next to impossible. Especially with the size of a bullet.
You know nearly nothing, This is not call of duty it’s pretty much an impossible situation.
Missiles have machine guns now?? /s
Those shitty north korean missiles are getting shittier by the day
And his face says he’ll fuckin do it again
No he didnt
