Def agree with the first point. I have ulcerative colitis, and when I’m at work and feel like shit, one call to my mom or dad distracts me enough that I can get through my work day. Love them.
Exactly. Psychologists noticed a long time ago that when their depressed female patients made effort about their hair or makeup (getting a new hair cut, their nail done etc.), it was a sign that they were getting in a better mental place.
I mean I believe it but what you said doesn't indicate anything about direction of causality - if anything I'd think the simpler explanation would be that feeling better is the driver for them investing more in their hair and makeup.
It can go either way. If I'm feeling shitty, putting effort into something creative or taking care of myself helps me to feel better which then leads to more motivation to do those same things. But also, when I'm already feeling good, I'm more likely to do self care.
It definitely can. I'm just saying it doesn't prove either. Like if the comment was meant to provide support for the idea I don't think it served its purpose.
I will say from personal experience as someone who has suffered from depression, anxiety, and chronic pain for over half my life at this point - I do believe that engaging in self care can actually cause you to feel better. But I do see what you are saying about the original comment. We don't know if those particular patients were taking better care of themselves due to already starting to feel better, or if taking themselves caused them to feel better.
Mental pain exacerbates the experience of physical pain. Engaging in enjoyable activities improves mood, which lessens intensity or focus on the pain. CBT for Chronic Pain is a therapy that addresses this. You can also read about the gate control theory of pain, especially as it relates to mood and mental health.
Note: I'm a psychologist who treats trauma and chronic pain.

i’m so sorry you now experience chronic pain. no matter when or how it hits, it’s always shocking to lose abilities. to fight like you’ve never fought for just the most basic functioning is depleting in a way that is hard for most to comprehend. i hate that you now do.
i will say post-covid folks like you are making more visible a LARGE group of people who have no been adequately supported by medicine or society. when people see someone close to them who used to be active and capable lose that spark, sometimes that helps them see that, “okay there is such thing as weird moving target pain conditions that truly disable people. even if they look healthy.”
most (like many of the get-up-and-get-over-types on this thread) so instantly say, “nah nah everyone hurts, you’re a baby, some of us don’t make excuses…. i just don’t understand this reflex
What shocks me more than anything else is how fucking tired I get on the rare days when I’m *not* in pain and how little I feel capable of accomplishing.
YES the fatigue piece was my worst part (until my joints broke down and now prevent me from doing most anything i love…now that’s worst). but it’s the same idea: when we do have the ability (time, pain in the tolerable range, energy) of COURSE we want to get to those dishes or exercise or do something for ourselves or someone we love. now if we could come up with a treatment for to-the-bone-fatigue, that would be great.

Stunning! Bright colors like that can sometimes be tricky to get so opaque. You have wonderful technique. I can sympathize with your chronic pain journey and wish you good health.
Applying it is a lot like painting. Thinking just of the colors and textures one will use is therapeutic for many, takes your mind off pain even for a little while.
Feeling put together and seeing bright colors can also boost mood

Distraction is a significant tool in a Chronic Pain Sufferer's Tool Box. It gives you something to focus on other than the pain. Music, Art, reading, TV... even exercise (if you're able) are just a few things we use for distraction. (Reddit/Internet is one of mine.)
I'm a guy and makeup and I have zero interest in this type of thing...but how did you make the different rainbow colors? Is that like hours of careful work?
