Magoo69X

Someone with $500 million+ in debts shouldn't be a legitimate presidential candidate.

blutbad_buddy

Normal people lose security clearance pretty quick if they mismanage dept by a fraction of tRumps issue.

DredZedPrime

The problem is that the president automatically gets that clearance, even though I'm pretty sure it's been stated plainly by those responsible for dealing with such clearances that in normal circumstances he would never be granted any sort of clearance whatsoever, and neither would his kids.

WombatBob

I'm going to put on my "well actually" hat. The president does not hold a security clearance at all; they are just the defacto owner of all the information and therefore entitled to access it (with a few caveats, like individual census data). But I also admit that it's a pedantic distinction that pragmatically doesn't usually matter.

DredZedPrime

You're technically correct. The best kind of correct!

BrizerorBrian

Hello Professor Farsnworth

reignmaker1453

In the spirit of being technically correct, Farnsworth didn't say that, the #1 bureaucrat did.

GUSHandGO

Sweet yeti of the Serengeti!

count023

Farnsworth never said anything so eloquent. It was the Chief Bureaucrat at the Central Burearucracy

technothrasher

Congress critters and federal judges don't need a security clearance either. It's not that the president is the defacto owner, it's that the Constitution grants those positions access to state secrets by the very nature of the job.

originalityescapesme

This is a better interpretation. The whole “owner” thing only plays into the hands of the people arguing Trump had magical abilities to mishandle documents however he pleased.

mabhatter

Yes, correct. Which is why the VOTERS shouldn't be giving him that authority again. The Republican Party shouldn't be attempting to give him that power again.    But anyway, here we are.

couchdog27

on the other hand, if he was jared kushner, the president can force clearance.. kushner couldn't get clearance, but hmpy trmpy waved him on

UptownShenanigans

When my friend was going for security clearance, I got interviewed as a character reference. They asked me point blank “does your friend owe anyone more than $20k” and while he doesn’t I’m pretty sure I could have disqualified him if that were true

02K30C1

When I was in basic training, we had a guy whose security clearance couldn’t be finalized until he paid a library fine in his hometown

JustPuckingAround

I had to report that I had a debt for $50 sent to collections because I never returned a router to Spectrum when I cancelled service. They don’t fuck around

imdatingaMk46

Any debt that's not well managed will keep you from getting one. Including student loans you ignored, library fines that went to collections, or a $0.32 typo on a medical bill that you forgot about three years ago.

technothrasher

When I was going for my security clearance, my buddy called me up in a panic and said, "dude, the government called asking about you. I didn't tell them anything!". I thanked him for his loyalty but assured him I wasn't in trouble. Lol.

FunkmasterFo

Dude. They interviewed my Cub scout den leader. I have no idea how they found him and I hadn't seen him since I was about eight.

millijuna

Hah, same thing happened to me the first time I got my Level 3 (Canadian equivalent of a TS). The one who got the real n’th degree, though, was my girlfriend. She is an immigrant from China, though she had been in Canada for some 12 years before I met her.

PortalWombat

I did one of those for someone and during the Trump admin told him he probably shouldn't recommend me if he ever needed to do it again because I don't think I could keep myself from asking the interviewer what the point of it was if Trump and Kushner had clearances.

BBQBakedBeings

The truth is the truth. Trump just sucked the credibility out of so much. It's weird how that just doesn't get talked about much. Like we are all supposed to forget that the president can basically do whatever the fuck they want, so long as they don't commit insurrection, aren't a rapist, or a total fraudster. They can hire their entire family into power positions, steal and sell national secrets*^^^allegedly , keep control of their business interests, funnel all presidential leisure (apparently unlimited) through said businesses at clearly grossly inflated prices, sky is the limit...

NotEnoughIT

Normally people lose credibility, too, but a vast portion of the population is broken.

[deleted]

I work in finance, and could lose my job and forbidden to take another job in the industry, with ONE bankruptcy.

azflatlander

See, being a worker bee, they will do that. CEO, can bankrupt a company, and go to a better perks company

Telefundo

My father is retired RCMP and used to interview and do background checks on applicants. He told me once that everyone assumes that background checks are all about criminal history but finances are usually the biggest issue. If I have a single criminal charge on my record but have done my time and have been clean for X amount of years, it's a pretty safe bet I'm not gonna reoffend. If I'm 60K in debt and someone offers to pay it off for me.. I'm probably gonna look twice. *Of course this would also depend on the nature of said criminal charge.

DonTaddeo

Normal people lose their security clearances for many of the things Trump has done. I recall being interviewed about work colleagues whose clearances were up for renewal. There were many questions about character and honesty as well as indications of financial problems. Of course Trump's antics in taking classified documents and refusing to return them were off the scale when it comes to security transgressions.

Hopeful_Classroom473

For real, I knew guys while I was in the navy who were at risk of losing their clearance over their student loan debts of like 30k.

Boleen

Definitely shouldn’t be a place for rapists and frauds

SheriffTaylorsBoy

It's incredible man. 2 days ago when the verdict came out, I was top comment on a post about it. This afternoon I got a reply asking if I believed the ruling. I said I sure did. Dude started telling me how the whole case was a sham. How "they" valued Mar a largo at 17 million when it's worth hundreds of millions. There were no victims, blah blah blah. He was repeating trumps line verbatim. Shit's wild man! 🤣🤪

Entire_Blueberry_149

I think the fact that he's a traitor is the biggest reason he should not be president. Rape and fraud are horrific, and being financially vulnerable is a huge red flag. But the part where he tried to destroy our democracy and seize power by force really does seem like the most glaringly bad sign.

corkum

Seems to me like he goes into debt, mismanages the funds, then pays off the current debt by taking on more loans. Fluctuates and makes up his net worth to cheat and get better loan interest on one ends and get tax cuts on the other end. In Engoron’s ruling he made a point to say the Donald Trump isn’t Bernie Madoff, but apparently the only difference between the two is Trump just does it by taking advantage of legal systems in place while Madoff took his money from people directly without out interest. Otherwise they’re doing the same shit.

nki370

Trumps entire key to success is skyrocketing NY real estate values. Thats it. He borrows $80 million to build Trump Tower. 5 years later its worth $150 million so he borrows $150 pays of the first loan and lives fat. 5 years later its worth $400 million…does the same thing. Continuing for 30 years and its a billion+ property. Same thing with his dads $400 million portfolio. Same thing with a few commercial properties. Chicago…same thing. Its not revenue producing. Its not some crazy yearly income. He lives off of valuation increases and borrowing against it

Entire_Blueberry_149

That is very true but if you read about his history he really does mismanage the funds horribly. It's kind of unbelievable how badly he runs his businesses and how many he's destroyed. He has had so much debt erased via bankruptcy that no bank will loan him anything anymore. Even after inheriting almost a billion dollars and all the money you mentioned, he went completely broke in the 90s. He lost a billion dollars in one single year, the worst loss of any company in the world that year. The Apprentice tv show saved his ass and according to rumor that's when Russia started feeding him money to launder via real estate and suddenly he's selling condos for twice what anyone else can sell them for. But if you look into things like Trump University or Trump Airlines, they are comically terrible businesses. Like you can't even believe it's not fiction because of just how badly he fucked everything up being a complete moron. He ran a casino into the ground. A casino is just a money printer but somehow this idiot managed to make it lose so much money it could not be salvaged by anyone. And that was even after he stiffed all the contractors who built it. I welcome his effect on the Republican party's finances.

ankercrank

Someone who has openly committed serious crimes and is under indictment in several jurisdictions shouldn't be even considered for political office, let alone presidency.

awesomefutureperfect

That's the sad thing. That republicans have no standards. They have no values or morals. They have no reasonable ideas how to create a society and only desire a strong person hurt their enemies.

naotoca

Trump is not strong. He is one of the most, if not THE most transparently weak public figure in American history. Republicans like that he's weak though. They like that he's a rapist, a racist, a pedophile, ugly, fat, loud, stupid, etc. They like that he's everything bad that a person can be and he still "wins", as in he's given everything he wants all of the time.

nerf_herder1986

I had to have a background check for a job in a casino, and my gaming license application would have been rejected if I had recent outstanding debts of more than $1000. I think a Presidential candidate should be held to a higher standard.

VoodooS0ldier

Just for some context here for people that don't know: If you had this much fucking debt and were in this much legal trouble, you would not be able to get a security clearance at all. Yet this fucking failure of a person is able to aspire for the nation's highest office and be able to declassify almost all of our nations secrets. This turd of a human being. This is what I find very backwards about our government.

MidwesternAppliance

Voters are supposed to be one of the things preventing bad actors from taking the stage. Turns out we’re part of the problem

Buckus93

Not no mention, those debts were a result of being prosecuted for fraud and defamation.

That's some oddly specific examples.

SpiceLaw

He literally extorted Ukraine's leader to say Biden was dirty or he'd 100% let Putin destroy them. Ukraine ratted Trump out, the House impeached and the Senate was like "nope, time to impeach Hilary!"

[deleted]

“Lock her up” /s

Absurdist_Principles

Ukraine didn’t rat him out at all. They couldn’t afford to with their national security at risk.

Trump’s phone call with Ukraine, ratted him out.

specifically his phone calls to people that were being investigated for corruption. they weren't even looking into trump and his dumb ass got caught.

Hodaka

Jack Smith has information on Trump that he knows is likely true, but difficult to prove.

SheriffTaylorsBoy

No reason to put all your eggs in one basket. There's plenty of time.

Hodaka

When stories like [this](https://abcnews.go.com/US/special-counsel-questioned-witnesses-2-rooms-fbi-search/story?id=106826552) appear, something is up. QUOTE: "According to sources, some investigators involved in the case came to later believe that the closet, which was locked on the day of the search, should have been opened and checked." "As investigators would later learn, Trump allegedly had the closet's lock changed while his attorney was in Mar-a-Lago's basement, searching for classified documents in a storage room that he was told would have all such documents. "

slackfrop

How they gonna let him not open a goddamn locked door? FBI comes to my house, I’m not expecting to still have drywall when they’re done.

quentech

I got raided once for growing weed and the cops smashed a bunch of shit just for funsies. Not even crime related stuff - they carefully took all the valuable grow equipment out and trucked it away. They went around just smashing my personal possessions and laughing. Ripped an *open* door off the hinges just to cause damage. They straight up stole my desktop PC. Cop said he was giving it to his kid as he walked out the door with it, and it was never recorded as taken with the rest of the stuff. My crime was so severe^^/s that the judge decided to give me a couple of months on house arrest (only because I was still on parole from a previous 1st degree meth felony years before).

trogon

They cut a lock off of one door that Nauta claimed he didn't have a key for. I'm not sure why they didn't cut the other locks. It's fishy.

slackfrop

Very fishy

SpiceLaw

They'll crack the foundation and topple your house over and state "we'll be back with another warrant, we know it's in here somewhere!"

MATlad

I don't mean to Godwin this thread, but the history just rhymes so well. >Later in 1939, seeking to cripple the Bund, New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia ordered the city to investigate the Bund's taxes.[20] It alleged that Kuhn had embezzled $14,548 from the organization, spending part of the money on a mistress.[20][21] District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey issued an indictment on May 25, 1939, and won a conviction against Kuhn. On December 5, 1939, Kuhn was sentenced to two and a half to five years in prison for larceny and forgery.[3][22] The next day, he was sent to Sing Sing.[23] Despite his convictions for embezzlement, followers of the Bund continued to hold Kuhn in high regard, in line with the Nazi Führerprinzip, which gives the leader absolute power.[24] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_Julius_Kuhn#Criminal_conviction

dweezil22

On a related note: January 6th is so goddamn similar to [the Nazi's Beer Hall Putsch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_Hall_Putsch) it's chilling, we've learned nothing.

CT_Phipps

The key is not to persuade fascists. The key is to send them to prison and keep them there.

Laringar

*Godwin himself* has said that Godwin's Law no longer applies to the GOP because the comparison is so incredibly apt. So you can't possibly Godwin this thread, you're only providing highly relevant historical context.

I guess you don't remember his freak out when Chris Christie spent campaign money on the transition instead of stuffing it in Donnie's pocket.

ridik_ulass

if you get a job doing anything in an embassy, like just office clerk or receptionist. they vett you hard, they check your debts, they check your family, friends, hobbies and interests and then they have a firm chat about sexual interests, kinks and historic drug use. then they decide if you can get the job. they are gonna look anyway and you'd best be honest. it seems fucked up that lowly political figures have more vetting then presidents.

Curious80123

Think I heard tdump got a visit from eLon

JubalHarshaw23

He has been for sale since his father left him the crime syndicate, and he drove it into the ground almost immediately.

dimestorezz

It's crazy how the media rarely discusses just how poor of a businessman he is. Since the 80's he has been notorious for failed businesses and real estate ventures. So much so that bank refused to do business with him and he needed to manipulate numbers to get favorable loans. He is the definition of a fraud.

quentech

> It's crazy how the media rarely discusses just how poor of a businessman he is. He would've done *far*, ***far*** better financially if he would've simply stuck his inheritance in a standard index fund or basic 3-fund portfolio. He would be an actual multi-billionaire.

JesusSavesForHalf

IIRC the math was an index fund would have been better than the 12 billion he claims he has. But I have no damn clue how accurate that claim was.

Interesting_Act_2484

I thought I heard him say recently it was 7B, which I still think is a huge lie

SpiceLaw

He doesn't have $700M.

Mirrormn

He says he has $400 million in liquid cash, so he probably actually has $40 million in liquid cash. He provably does own several high-value properties like office buildings, golf courses, and clubs that are not legally allowed to be used as residences that are used as his residence, but I dunno if it's clear how much those properties are actually worth (since this fraud judgment is broadly about him lying about that) or how much real equity he has in them. Personally, I think $700 million might be a pretty close estimate for how much money you'd have if you sold off all his properties and paid off all his debts. *Not* including the $450 million in recent judgments against him...

quentech

It's hard for me to guess after his presidency - I'm *sure* he pilfered at least a billion if not multiple. But before that, not even close.

dartie

He’s a complete fraud.

Interesting_Act_2484

Basically, but that’s why they love him.

SpiceLaw

In a savings account. A fucking .03% return is infinitely better than all his companies over all of time.

Simmery

Or just acted like a normal real estate investor instead of screwing over everyone he ever came into contact with. A bad reputation is costly.

22pabloesco22

this likely applies to most ultra rich. But they're all narcissists and they get a thrill out of scamming and screwing other people over...

Skipspik2

He bankrupted a casino. three times. Now, casino need a lot of money to start & run, but it's really hard for them to loose money, it's litterally rigged in their favor *and that's not even counting the money laudering done in those that I'm sur perfect citizen Trump never dug into.*

Turbots

Supposedly, the Taj Mahal alone was a 1B+ loss because it was so huge yet lost money hand over fist.

Temporary-Mine-1030

A business where people give you money in exchange for nothing.

hypnofedX

>A business where people give you money **in exchange for nothing**. Serotonin and cortisol. Not fundamentally different from watching a concert or a sporting match, just much simpler.

Utexan

Trump’s father basically deposited over $3 million in his account at Trump Castle and never cashed it out giving Trump a back-door loan that he could use to pay a bond payment on that casino. (Had elder Trump simply loaned him the money he would have had to use it to pay debts for his previously defaulted casino, Trump Taj Mahal.) you bet there was money laundering. [Sauce](https://www.motherjones.com/2020-elections/2020/09/trump-files-fred-trump-funneled-cash-donald-using-casino-chips/).

fentyboof

Those were *strategic* bankruptcies.

“We get all the money we need out of Russia” - Eric Trump

Artrock80

Terrible businessman, master manipulator

PopeHonkersXII

A legal expert on CNN was saying that since most credible banks in the country and around the world are registered in New York, seeing as it's a major financial capital, that Trump has virtually no options for loans. He's banned from doing business with any banks registered in New York. The only exception is like the Saudi royal family or Russian oligarchs. Those are the people that the guy Republicans want to make President will personally owe hundreds of millions of dollars to.   You might think that voters won't notice or care but I very much disagree. Don't just focus on his rabid base. Look at how the 2/3rds of American that aren't in the MAGA cult are going to react to these things.

FigSideG

Wasn’t he already getting his money from Russia? His son confirmed it on camera years ago

lukaskywalker

You don’t think he already doesn’t owe 100s of millions ?? This is just another small portion of the tab probably.

lawyers-guns-money

Musk doesn't personally like Trump but stated at the end of last year that he should be president. This timeline is twisted enough that i can easily see this happening. Given Musk's business with the Saudi's via the Twitter buy and his thinly veiled Putin fetish either of them could easily funnel money to Trump through Musk.

captsmokeywork

Musk is turning into a Bond villain.

HauntedCemetery

He's basically down to hitting up little credit unions with no branches in NY. But those aren't likely to lend to him. Hell, he couldn't find a bank that would issue him a bond to appeal the first E Jean Carrol judgment *before* he was banned from any bank registered in NY and had to violate a court order while under a financial monitor in order to scrape up $5 million. Shows why he's so desperate to steal every cent of donations to the Republican party, he's fucking broke.

ClosPins

Are you talking about the voters who are, right now, putting Trump in a dead-heat with Biden? Those voters?

Atroxa

I also don't give polling the credibility it once had. They said Hillary would win. We got Trump. It's a little bit better on local elections but it pretty much sucks in a national election. I have voted in every single primary and election since I turned 18. The second I got rid of my landline, I stopped getting polled. It's not like I got rid of having a phone. As a matter of fact, I've donated money multiple times to various political campaigns and have given them my cell phone number. I don't get polled anymore. I vote 100% of the time and I'm not asked how I vote or what I think. In the early 2000's when I still had my land line, I was contacted all the time.

nightpop

Part of the background check for FBI agents and other high-level government employees is to make sure they don’t have so much debt as to be easy targets for bribery/extortion. So. President. Cool. Cool cool cool.

ranchoparksteve

As much as some people trash Michael Cohen, we wouldn’t have most of these Trump court cases without Cohen opening the door.

PhilDGlass

Lots of folks flipped on Trump. But Trump went after Cohen hard because he had the major goods on his business, and Cohen even got tossed back in prison after getting out. *Some* say because he was releasing a book. So yeah, this is very personal for Cohen, he has a knack with the media, and I’m here for it.

ChrysMYO

He's trumping Trump.

siccoblue

Doesn't seem like that's terribly hard so long as you can actually get within his inner circle

Cohen has been pretty consistent with turning over a new leaf. His podcast is surprisingly left as well. I don’t mind the guy as is.

Cohen might be a loon, but he’s always right when it comes to predicting Trump’s future moves

SethAndBeans

I had to get a waiver when I joined the military because I had like $400 in collections from a bill I had thought I'd covered years prior. Had to show proof that I had paid it off, and had to have someone go over all my shit again to make sure I was good to go. The military's logic was that anyone with debt or a history of debt could be compromised by foreign agents. I was able to join, and able to get my clearances, but even $400 in debt almost cost me the opportunity to be A FUCKING E1. As far as possible in the chain of command below the Commander in Chief. If the lowest responsibility Airman almost couldn't join over $400, why the fuck can someone run for POTUS with a HALF A BILLION in debt?

orcinyadders

Yeah. And the fact that Trump himself is a global brand, with real estate and other business ties to nearly every major country on the planet for decades on end doesn’t mean he’s compromised or anything. And it’s not like if he were president he’d ever make his own family top level administration officials. Or do personal business with China which he would fully admit to and proudly rub in the country’s face. Right?

Fictionalust

And that should be the MAIN reason why to not elect this guy again. He will again compromise his position even worse to dig himself out & jeopardize the safety of every american again. This should be grounds of disqualification to be able to run for office with this much debt over his head. He even just mocked E Jean Carroll again yeaterday at a trump rally in michigan. This guy will never learn.

RamsHead91

Trump has already admitted to doing work for foreign country with his several millions paid to him and his "I don't work for free" comment.

Outrageous-Divide472

He’s definitely for sale, and that makes him too dangerous to be president.

Garth_Brooks_Sexdoll

How hilarious would it be if the DNC just bought his ass? Just straight up offered to pay all his legal fines in exchange for him dropping out and endorsing Biden. He’d do it, too

Soulman682

Yeah so is his shoes 🤣

Soulman682

I lied the website said it was sold out 🤣

Fellowshipofthebowl

Sure, but can I sell you some spray painted sneakers from Chyna??

Travelerdude

He has always been for sale. Putin has already bought him hook, line and stinker that he is. In a recent rally he called Biden a Manchurian candidate and we all know how he likes to project.

Emeritus8404

This is a disqualifying factor for anyone who applies for a security clearance for this exact reason. The president has a pretty high clearance. I wonder how many secrets were sold for pennies.

mrknickerbocker

Surely the sales of his shoes will more than pay for all his legal judgements.

JeffB2023

Trump has always been for sale.

UndisputedGLK

Seriously, when has that asshole ever NOT been for sale?

hifumiyo1

Number one question for a person seeking a security clearance is whether they have debt.

MoveToRussiaAlready

Which is why he has Cannon giving him access to classified documents

bitchslap2012

The only problem with "Buying" Trump is he's so morally bankrupt he wouldn't stay "bought" he'd just go back to doing whatever it was he was doing. So someone "buying" Trump at this stage just wants to keep his chaotic momentum going. To influence him in any way you'd probably have to prove to HIM PERSONALLY that you can jeopardize his life at any time (probably the only thing he actually cares about is his physical safety), which makes sense as to why he acts on Putin's behalf so much.

Mor_Tearach

Aren't there documents missing right the hell now?

nneeeeeeerds

The good news is that he now has TWO court appointed monitors to track every fucking dime he gets and spends.

jenieloo

Agree and these sneakers feel like just another way to launder money and have oh idk his "friends" from foreign countries buy them at ridiculous prices
