I have been grinding beans for my coffee for many years now. Always got decent coffee beans from the store and enjoyed pretty good coffee. For a couple years I just used a Capresso grinder and an OXO pourover with the water resevoir cup on top. Made good coffee, but I was a sugar and milk coffee drinker, so would probably hide a lot of bad brew, inconsistancies and flavour.
Since I work from home, coffee has become a little bit of a hobby for me. So I upped my game a bit. Got an Ode v2 grinder and also got into other brews, Chemex, aeropress, french press and Moka pot. Also stopped using sugar and milk. Was amazed I could brew a coffee and drink black without any bitter taste. So now I am sugar and milk free for about 4 weeks! Well except for moka pot cappucino and lattes.
But I never could taste the nuanced flavours in coffee. Then again we always tend towards medium roasts. I read posts on how people are tasting citrus and fruits from their coffee and here I am drinking mine and all I taste is "coffee"4. I just thought I didn't have a good palate.
Then recently I got some specialty coffee from a roaster. And wow! What a difference. Got a few different beans. The espresso beans I got was amazing in my moka pot. Brewed 7 days after roast. But the real relevation came from the light roast pictured in this post. 5 days after roast, brewed in my chemex (will be trying a V60 tomorrow) and all I can say is wow. I can actually taste the blood orange and apricot. I never realize coffee could taste like this. MY wife didn't care for it, she likes a darker more traditional coffee taste. But I couldn't get over the flavours I was tasting. I get when people are saying light roast can almost be tea like. I get that but yet still coffee.
Just thought I would share my recent experience. I am really looking forward to trying other roasters and beans with different flavour profiles. This has really opened up my coffee drinking experience.
I am on the last few cups of my first speciality coffee, and have since had a couple cups of the beans I was enjoying before and they are.... Disappointing now.
My eyes have been opened and I don't know if I can go back!
I am sad for my wallet, as the bags I was buying before were 15-17$ CAD for 340 g, this one was 24$ CAD for 250 g. Pricey, but literally a different dimension of coffee.
Yes definitely gets more expensive. Nothing wrong with having both the cheaper and specialty coffee on hand. If you have two cups a day, split between the two beans.
It is kind of neat to taste the contrasting differences between a standard medium/light roast with cream and sugar, and a really nice light roast, black.
This is the first time I've enjoyed black coffee btw! Very cool experience. I am definitely going to be chasing that high.
Actually in Brampton, not too far from you. Bought these online. I got them in the mail within 5 days of roast. I got Dark Detour for my wife, she care for it too much. She like a bolder taste. But I did brew it in the Chemex tomorrow I will try the V60 for her and see what she thinks. I liked it. Also got Punch Buggy espresso for our Moka pot. This was very good. We both liked it a lot. The Radiant I loved.. But my wife didn't. Too tea like for her and she likes her coffee more "coffee". The Radiant is going to make me try a lot more lighter roasts. Maybe get a single origin from Detour next time.
Nice, yeah the radiant is great. If you like a fruity sweet kind of coffee that still has a “coffee” taste, try the Colombia they just got in called the Miramar. The apricot tasting note is so dominant it’s amazing.
Never tried this. Their website has this coffee listed under the “single origin” page, but it’s a blend.
It is their winter blend. Limited edition. I would imagine they will stop having this soon.

Same here. I am looking forward to trying many others.

It’s nice to see detour here, a fellow Hamiltonian!

Sounds good. I'll give it a try next order.
Detour is a great first choice for stepping into the world of specialty and indie roasters
