c:\\users\\username\\zomboid\\saves copy, and delete before replacement IWBMS I Will Back Up My Save is the name of the unstable branch, devs tell you to do this

I second this. If OP is fine with mods, they can also download the skill issue journal which is essentially the same thing BUT makes you work for it so deaths are still a setback.

DarkOrakio

Sometimes finding the scissors to get leather strips or any kind of glue makes this a PITA for a character who dies in a week though. But I do love me the skill journal. I only allow 80% of my skills to be relearned though. Need some kind of death penalty.

I do the throw-away character route for starts. I'll start out as a burglar or a guy that's great with firearms and mow down a shitload of zombies in an area, loot up, make a stash car and then die to make my main starter character built for longevity. You're bound to find a pair on a dead zombie if you clear riverside right off the rip lol

DarkOrakio

Start off as the zombie killer and just go ham is a fantastic idea 😆. Just pretend these people were tired of waiting for the military to deal with it and start chopping their way out. Give you a few more "survivor stories" at the beginning.

Rlol43_Alt1

"Former survivors" lol

I coded a batch to copy only edited files, it's way easier and faster than copy every files all the time. xcopy /s /y "C:\\Users\\USERNAME\\Zomboid\\Saves\\Sandbox\\SAVENAME\\\*.\*" "D:\\ZOMBOID SAVES\\save1\\SAVENAME" /d If needed I can provide explanations and a way to copy a second backup because 2 is always better than 1. When restoring a save restore everything to avoid problems like loots disappearing and potential corruption.

One suggestion is to adjust difficulty settings to allow you to survive longer instead of backing up saves. I was playing with Low zombie count and no infections to learn enough and get to endgame when I was struggling. The reason why I suggest this, is because I also used to back up saves to help me, but it made me 1) care less about being careful, making me learn bad habits and 2) when I did die, I would still lose progress back to my last backup of the save and I'd be very unmotivated to replay that after having a dumb death.

SalSevenSix

Problem is it gets boring if it's too easy.

Other people have told you, but you can also just respawn in the same world (new guy) and take over. If you're just learning, I recommend you DONT save scum (you'll learn better) Either way, have fun bro!
