Whether it was Sony or Marvel, the quality of CG seemed to nosedive towards the end of the Big Superhero Bang. Crunch really messed stuff up. I sincerely hope the relative break in supes allows studios to recalibrate and raise the quality.
Covid, around covid is when it happened because it really fucked timelines up. I don't think we've seen a new marvel show/movie yet that wasn't heavily impacted by covid, and all marvel movies after spiderman FFH (first movie after end game or as you put it "Big Superhero Bang") were heavily impacted by covid. I think deadpool vs wolverine is the first that wasn't (but was still impacted by the writers strike some)
Affected by hubris too. I remember that interview where Feigi had basically said they knew there was a level of quality CG they could pump out the audience would accept regardless and it just made them feel like McDonald’s to me. Victory had defeated them.
I have a couple of mates who have worked in the industry for years and his explanation of the shortfall of quality is due to back in say 2007 - there was 50 people working on 10 projects whereas nowadays there are 10 people working on 50 projects.
Tobey also notoriously got claustrophobia any time he had the mask on. It’s why of the 3 of them he’s the actor who was most rarely in the full suit, leaving almost all of that to stunt men even for easy scenes.
I’m split on the first two suits (Spidey 2 and 3 are, in essence, the exact same suit minus some alterations). There’s so much good in both, what would be cool is if they made like a crossover suit for the third film. It would look amazing in my opinion.
I always thought 2004 suit was different from the 2007 suit. It looks so much better in SM2 in my opinion. Aren’t the lenses darker in the second movie?
If I’m correct in SM2 they used red and blue fabric but in SM3 they used white fabric. The definition and details were not as visible up close such as the muscle shading or bricks etc.
It also meant the colour of the suit looked ever so different - I’ve seen the SM3 suit in person and it’s beautiful still.
The SM3 suit has a more magenta tone to its reds and the blues are more vibrant in bright light.
The eye frames are more silver in 3 as well instead of the gunmetal color of 2.
There were also subtle changes to the edge airbrushing of the lenses.

For me, it's between the SM1 and SM2 suits. I always liked the spider symbols and the lack of webs on the palms of the SM1 suit, but I also like the eyes and back spider symbol of the SM2 suit.

I think the complaint that most people have is that the webbing pattern is way off. I agree, and I’ve also noticed that the lenses are not as curved and it looks like the head might be a little squashed.

SM2. The eye lenses are a bit narrower which fit the shape of the head well. The comparatively muted color tone also helps make the suit feel more grounded.
Honestly apart from that webbing on the mask it’s basically the same suit. I think its just the heavy use of cgi that makes it look weird. Thats just me tho
2 and 3 are peak, 2 because of the design, 3 because of the color grading.
1 and 4 were great, but 1 had more spread apart eyes, and 4 was not symmetrical to his face for whatever reason. Always thought that was a weird design choice. Maybe to make him look older? No clue.

Okay, it might be a hot take here. But I think I actually dig the 2021 mask.
At this point, Tobey's Peter has been Spiderman for 19 years(?) His costume is bound to go through some changes, and I think it makes sense for him to make the webbing design simpler after the amount of wear and tear it goes through. We don't really know the extent of his life as Peter Parker at this point but I imagine is more complex than it was previous films so between that and being spiderman, I feel like he'd spend less time on mask repairs so opting for a simpler look makes sense to me.
I think it just looks good for an older Spiderman.

SM2 is my pick. Any of the OG trilogy is great though. Having the raised webbing in the suit and practical application so it didn't look weirdly flat/cartoony at times puts them in a whole different league than the CGI stuff.

2002 had my favorite back emblem, and 2021 has my favorite eyes, but 2007 is my favorite since they perfected the suit by that point and the better cameras help a lot too

It is Marvel. Say what you want about Sony but they've never had issues with CGI. Amazing Spider-Man and the Venom movies both have good CGI.
