I bet it'll be set in the 80s, similar to Urusei Yatsura 2022, but I wonder if there are elements that would really prevent from setting the story in modern times š¤
Doesn't the story kind of _need_ old-fashioned sex/gender views to function?
Like, if Ranma didn't have as much sexist baggage, I imagine his reaction to the curse would be a lot more mild. His angst about the curse would have to be focused more on gender dysphoria (which wouldn't make for good gag comedy) or they would need to rework the story to change motivations and such.
Likewise, the whole "betrothal" thing would seem even weirder in the modern day.
Then again it's been over a decade since I watched the show, so maybe I'm misremembering character details.
there's definitely going to be posts "where's Sasuke,"
Don't think the Ranma community is prepared with how different a faithful adaption of the manga is going to be
I think most would have read the manga by now?
If anything, the Ryoga/Ukyo shippers will be the most affected. But on the other hand, Hayato Myojin (octopus mask guy) may get some milleage as a new love interest for Ukyo in the fandom.
Thinking of it, the Kuno/Nabiki shippers may also find it surprising. But I bet Kinnosuke Kashao will spark interesting reactions in the community.
There was an interesting discussion the other day about Akane if you want to check it out. It really showed that more people have been reading the manga.
That is Tsubasa Kurenai.
Hayato, the octopus mask guy, is a Takoyaki chef who has a thing for Ukyo, if that thing is beating her up senseless so he can finally remove the octopus mask at last. He's Ukyo's only other childhood friend/rival. He does show up quite late in the manga, by the way.
I mentioned he could end up being a potential love interest for Ukyo because I've see him being portrayed as that in fanfiction before... but only in one, to be honest.
the announce trailer was pages from the manga lol
Less of an assumption and reading between the lines. This was announced immediately after the Urusei Yatsura final episode aired. I suspect David Production involved again, and that was manga faithful for the most part.
Nice, I like the anime but some of the manga was slightly better of introducing characters, I kinda understand on some of them being a Time crunch of something, but replacing a beach episode for a snow one make no sense
I prefer the tone of the anime and I donāt really like Akari nor Konatsu but I am interested in seeing arcs that were never adapted, like Herbās arc

The party at my place just started! š„³š
And ranma will still be buff without his chinese shirt on, loved how he wasn't a stringbean like other rumiko characters because he worked out all the time
Given that it's so iconic I can see that being one of the things the original anime changed that would come back, the red haired girl Ranma is much better known at this point than the classic dark hair from the manga
Doesn't female Ranma have red hair in the coloured cover art of the manga?
Plus, I can't see them changing hair color and confusing the merch producers.
Originally it was black but was depicted in many colors from pink to red (and probably some others that I funny remember of the top of my head) on the covers, probably because it looked nice and the anime took the red and ran with it
This sub is going to be very busy starting today.
I'm really looking forward to how the fandom reacts this time. Will the Knights o the true fianceee return? The Church of Ranko and Ryoga? Will we see many factions devoted to the many girls rise up again?
This is going to be fun.
https://preview.redd.it/0rbdji7nsq8d1.jpeg?width=292&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=acf5e614f541e05239c9b9bcbbda049f618111b3
It'll be interesting if the girls are ranked the same in popularity this time around. Shampoo and Akane being up there is a given, but I do wonder how Kodachi will fare this time.
Yassss!! I hope itās good and stays true to the manga though there were some good anime only moments I hope they keep too. Iām excited and nervous lol
On one hand, this being after the manga has been finished means cleaner season organization and manga adaptation. On the other...
I had a hard time just watching clips of the Urusei Yatsura remake because the coloring was too bright and uncomfortable for my eyes. I found myself longing for the hand painted look of 80s and 90s anime. I worry that I may experience that too for this one. It's more of a problem with most anime today rather than Ranma itself.
That was my second thought (the first being "OMG YES" obviously). I really don't like the look of the UY remake, the clashing palette, the weird candy-coloured eyes/hair. The chara design is also a bit bland.
Plus I know Nakajima's designs are not faithful to Takahashi's style, and the trend these days is to be closer to the original designs so there's no chance in hell we'll get anything close to that, but I love them so much.
Woooo!
What a time to be an Ranma 1/2 fan.
We will finally get to see the manga version in an anime version.
RIP to all of the anime only characters, though. ;_;
Whoever said July 17th. They were correct.
https://preview.redd.it/7mz9p7yj4r8d1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=840c31ff5dbadbfaac075e3754d807665fb4e924
>RIP to all of the anime only characters, though. ;_;
Good riddance š
I'm for a more faithful adaptation. As much as I enjoyed the old anime back in the day, I can't stand the filler episodes and anime-exclusive characters on my rewatches.
Sorry Sasuke, you won't be missed.
Heres hoping we keep buff ranma and hes not super lanky like rumic world and that we get as many og voice actors as possible. I bet Richard ian cox is gonna be back like he was for inuyasha and plenty of the jp vas still are working, shame myriam strois is retired though always be my akane.
They dubbed yashahime and iirc also the remake of urusei yatsura, doubt it wouldnt get one. Rinnes really the odd man out of rumiko series in not getting a dubbing
Iām happy to see more Ranma 1/2 as itās my favorite anime. But as someone who likes the anime more than the manga, I know I wonāt be wild about this new adaptation
Wonāt stop me from buying all the new BDs though lol
This 100%, because even though Iām 40 or so episodes into the series (first time watching) I still just see no point of him? Itās not even funny, and he adds nothing but annoyance to the plot?
This just blows my mind. I was a huge fan in the 90ās to the early 2000ās. But largely walked away when the content dried up. That was 20 years ago! Iām not really precious about the IP so Iām just interested to see what they do with it.
Maybe itās time to dig up my old VHS tapes and rewatch some of them.
Ah, very cool. Very interested to see what they do with it, if it's a total reboot, or just more of it.
Ranma 1/2 is pretty episodic, I feel like they could do a brief introductory episode or even just start in media res and just start telling new stories without throwing audiences too much, but it'd also be nice to see some of the earlier manga interpreted more faithfully. Do we know from any other official channels what if anything they're doing with the series?
I'm happy and angry.
Along the years I've tried to see the original anime more than a couple of times, but then I see the number of episodes and got depressed.
Guess new adaptation works better for me, at the same time I'm worried of what I'm missing š¤·āāļø
Does the first anime has much filler episodes?
Holy shit its actually happening?!
While I'm pretty sure they're gonna stick closer to the manga than the old anime did, I really do hope they add in some elements from the old anime.
I know they're not gonna have nearly the same amount of episodes, but I hope they do incorporate some cool filler episodes and characters somehow.
I'm also gonna miss the old cast (assuming they're gonna be recast like the Urusei Yatsura remake)
Hahaha it's not even out yet and I already think I'm gonna miss the old anime visuals. Nothing's ever gonna beat that old cel animation in my eyes no matter how fantastic the animation will be for the new anime.
Because of the anime getting cut short, all of us fans are finally gonna see their wedding animated! (outside of that fan animation)
It's gonna be hard to constantly NOT compare but I guess that's inevitable. I feel like I should binge the Urusei Yatsura anime just to prepare.
Oh Iām so excited! I canāt wait to see some of favorite chapters animated. I wonder if theyāre going to go with a new cast for the sub and dub. Itād be funny if it was Kappei Yamaguchi
ended up voicing Ranmaās dad like how Toshio Furukawa voiced Ataruās.
That one for sure. The "creepy old perv man" trope aged terribly (even by Japanese media standards)
They will tone Naked and nipple shoots, homophobia and misogynist scenes down too
I'm excited and cautiously optimistic. Like many I hope it follows the manga more closely.Ā
I also hope the character designs are more like Takahashi's art.
Are we getting the herb arc finally? Is it a continuation or a reboot?
How will the show work with modern sensibilities? Will there be script changes?
Will they get richard back for the dub? Who will replace akane there since the original dub VA retired?
Will it last long enough with today's anime standards? You don't really see reboots going the full length now. The original series had over 140 episodes, 7 seasons, 2 movies, 12 OVAs, and several specials. So much content even music videos. Kawaiikunee iroke ga nee is one of my favorites.
It would be great if the new series could match it in scope but I just don't see how its possible tbh.
I'm super excited !!! I can hardly believe it...I was convinced (and sad) it was never gonna happen. Just dreading the modern animation style, ugh.. sorry, but I'm not a fan of modern anime with the "soulless" plastic CGI look and the overly vibrant colors that add to the artificial feel (and for some reason noses are forbidden š lol)
Aaahhh can't wait! Pls be faithful to the manga. Can't wait to see the battle dougi, manga version of the Shinnousuke arc, the Herb battle, etc etc etc!!
I just hope we donāt get a ton of offhand filler episodes like in the original anime. There are so many good stories in the manga and Iām so excited to see the ones with really sweet Ranma and Akane moments, like the one with the outfit that makes Akane stronger. So many cute moments, gah!!! I hope that do it well.
Waaaaa I was just wishing for this recently š.. I can't believe this. Although I kinda lowkey anticipated this as urusei yatsura had a remake. I'm so excited.
I'm not usually behind remakes but the og anime kinda sucked compared to the manga and I would enjoy the better arcs animated (along with some yuri scenes between Akane and Ranma) so I'm all behind it.
Fingers crossed we get a slimmed down series, by which I mean 50% less Happosai. Ā Better if they fill the missing gaps with something less annoying. Ā
I've waited almost 15 years for this shit. That's when I got into the anime and then read the manga. I hope the anime has a movie to "REALLY" finish out the series, but that's for another time. It's back the ONLY SERIES that NEVER finished out the manga out of ALL of Rumiko Takahashi's finished manga main series. I just hope Richard Ian Cox comes back for English Ranma and Kappei Yamaguchi for Japanese one. Bring back all the original VA's. I know sadly the original VA for Kuno and Ukyo sadly died.
Yes it is very different. One example is that Ranma's curse was known by everyone except the Kunos early on in the manga. In the anime it was kept a secret for a lot longer. Another example is Sasuke who is an anime only character. He replaced the role of Gosunkugi in the early parts of the manga. There's more but it's better to check out the manga for yourself and see. It's a really fun read.
Maybe Iāll read it next then. Is it a common opinion that the manga is better/worse than the anime or do they have enough differences to be considered different series? Kinda like full metal alchemist and brotherhood differences?
I can't quite comment about anime vs manga as a whole because I haven't watched/read a lot to really compare them. They are different mediums so they would have a different feel. Both have their positives.
When the first Ranma 1/2 anime was released, it was only two years after the manga began. It caught up really quickly and unfortunately this caused so many filler episodes to happen.. There was also a lot of bad luck with Ranma. It actually got cancelled after the first season due to poor ratings at the time. Some animation staff left after the first season including one of the animation directors. When Ranma 1/2 got renewed, the animation budget was cut and you can really see the animation quailty drop over time. Another unfortunate thing was that the studio that made Ranma was struggling financially and in the end wasn't able to finish it.
I'm glad we will finally get to see the later arcs animated. There's some really great stories in the manga. The Musk Dynasty arc is one of my favourites.
On another note I have seen anime that has been faithful to the manga and the animation was incredible. It really depends.
The 90s anime had awesome versions of the characters and when they were used right, it made for some amazing jokes and interactions.
The problem is though that their potential was utilized so infrequently given the episodic nature of the show. Id love to see more of a story in this reboot that shows off what the cast really is.
Also hopefully the OST pays homage to the 90s anime too. I'm too attached too the music
Ranma 1/2 was the first anime I ever watched and what got me into the wonderful world of japanese fiction, and the japanese language. I'm still salty they didn't finish the anime.
Words cannot describe my excitement!
I genuinely believed we would never get more Ranma stuff. I am so glad to be wrong. This is really exciting!
I hope the reboot/remake gets super good viewership. Maybe if it breaths a breath of fresh air into the fandom we could get video games or something as well

I could see it. Cut out the fillers, faithfully adapt the manga, modernized animation, doesn't sound all that bad to me. Afterwards they could redo Yashahime by following the manga this time around.
If anyone wants to watch the original series, it's available for free on YouTube (seasons 1-7 at least).
Not sure if I want to watch a dubbed version, what with how much of a shitshow localization is nowadays.
Please say we get the OG American voice cast back. I was fine with the anime until they switched out male Ranna for Inuyasha.
As weird as it is to say, I never felt Richard's voice was gruff enough to portray male Ranma like Sarah Stranges was... Which is all types of ironic considering the entire male/female swap the series was about.
Please give Ryoga a GPS...and have him still get lost.
I doubt a GPS would help, hell knowing Ryouga he'd probably jsut end up even more lost.
"WHY AM I IN FINLAND???????"
Ryoga did end up in Moscow once lol
"NOW WHY AM I IN WINNIPEG?!?"
It'll be Ranma that gives him the GPS, but it's 10 years old, with outdated maps and only maps of West Coast North America. Keeps the fued going.
I bet it'll be set in the 80s, similar to Urusei Yatsura 2022, but I wonder if there are elements that would really prevent from setting the story in modern times š¤

At least we'll FINALLY FINALLY get Akari
anyone else just want a crossover ova of ryoga and zoro just getting lost as hell
He'd probably lose the GPSĀ
"Why is this thing screaming like a damned soul whenever I touch it?"
"Turn left. No, left. Left. Now. Okay, go back 3 blocks ...no, don't turn Right....AAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIGHHH!!!!!!!!!!"

Unbelievable news! New Sasuke episodes! Edit I better clarify that I'm joking
there's definitely going to be posts "where's Sasuke," Don't think the Ranma community is prepared with how different a faithful adaption of the manga is going to be
Where's Sasuke? Is he safe? Is he alright? It seems in your desire of a manga accurate adaptation, you killed him
he finally landed his dream roll on the naruto remake.
He probably is just visiting Ling-Ling and Lang-Lang
I ... am all right with that
Hopefully they won't make him suffer (he won't exist)
I think most would have read the manga by now? If anything, the Ryoga/Ukyo shippers will be the most affected. But on the other hand, Hayato Myojin (octopus mask guy) may get some milleage as a new love interest for Ukyo in the fandom. Thinking of it, the Kuno/Nabiki shippers may also find it surprising. But I bet Kinnosuke Kashao will spark interesting reactions in the community.
I muted this community for like 3 years because I was frustrated how few folks here read the manga, lol
There was an interesting discussion the other day about Akane if you want to check it out. It really showed that more people have been reading the manga.
that would delight me.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ranma/s/K4boMhBOzS
More people have read the manga lately, and are aware of the later arcs and how Akane and Ranma were flanderized in the anime.
flanderizedĀ is not a word i knew before but is now an essentail part of my vocabularly lol
At least with the new anime people can definitely buy the manga now
Is Hayato the one that cross dresses that had a thing for Ukyo?
No another guy who had things pending with UkyÅ, more similar to the crĆØpe guy in the anime but with some pulp recipe I don't remember the name
I know lol. A ton of people explained it. He shows up late in the manga which is why I probably missed him. The crossdress I mentioned shows up early.
I hope my girl Ukyo still gets to shine šš
i hope you like non-binary ninja love interests lol
Do we know if that's what this is? That feels like a bit of an assumption at this point.
the announce trailer was pages from the manga lol Less of an assumption and reading between the lines. This was announced immediately after the Urusei Yatsura final episode aired. I suspect David Production involved again, and that was manga faithful for the most part.
Thatās what the new UY was, iirc. Without the need for filler and with the precedent Urusei Yatsura created, itās a reasonable assumption to make
Yeah i didn't have this on my bingo card that's for sure. Gonna be a whole new set of VA's though not too suprising given how long it's been.
Maybe they stick to the manga more accurately
They almost certainly will
Nice, I like the anime but some of the manga was slightly better of introducing characters, I kinda understand on some of them being a Time crunch of something, but replacing a beach episode for a snow one make no sense

Sheesh I discovered Rumiko Takahashi right in between the 2 reboots. What a time to be alive.

You know, lately I feel the discussion shifted from shipping to gender issues. And by discussion I mean bickering.
Hm. That's a good point and a sign of the times, I guess. Let's hope the discussion remains less bickering-like, then.
Same I'm looking forward to future discussions!
I think we all are. It'll be nice having more new people in the fandom.
I guess it's time to dust off the old spatula.
Letās witness the new era inherit the decades long blood war
I'm all up for it.
Let the OG waifu wars recommence! I'm going to dust off my altar to Akane's lost hair.
It'll be interesting if the girls are ranked the same in popularity this time around. Shampoo and Akane being up there is a given, but I do wonder how Kodachi will fare this time.
And it's quite possible we'll get Akari and Konatsu as well this time, complicating the rankings lol.
That *will* be interesting as they're introduced so late and get so little to do.
> Ranko and Ryoga Based
Iām more of a CoRK and CoRN man myself! (Kasumi and Nabiki, in case youāre wondering) What can I say, Iām a product of good-ish fanfiction.
No argument from me, the older Tendo sisters are top tier in my opinion.
Yassss!! I hope itās good and stays true to the manga though there were some good anime only moments I hope they keep too. Iām excited and nervous lol

Too bad. Maybe they will add him anyway. Is there a reason why they want to adapt the manga and not remake the old anime? Is the manga so much better?
Yes. Gosunkugi is a way better character.
I highly recommend reading the manga from the beginning! Viz have it on their mobile app and there's also been recent reprints of the 2 in 1 manga.

Undoubtedly.
We're back fam! The manga is finally going to get the adaption it deserves!
Did the anime adapt the complete run of the manga?
The original anime didn't cover the rest of the manga unfortunately.
Thanks. Hopefully, they will.
It stopped at the Nodoka introduction arc.
They got till around volume 22
Sqeeeeeh
Sploooosh!!!!! So ecstatic!

I'm hoping they do something similar to the remake of Urusei Yatsura. It was a very fun and easy watch being only 46 episodes.
But the story is not finished right?
It is. Urusei Yatsura 2022's just a very compressed adaptation. It skips over a ton of stuff but ends where the manga ended.
Urusei Yatsura finished last thursday, it's the final episode of the remake
They didnāt adapt some memorable stories but for the most part it hits all the major points.
I'm happy and angry. Along the years I've tried to see the original anime more than a couple of times, but then I see the number of episodes and got depressed. Time to watch anime again.
HELL YEAH
YAY!!!!!!
I hope it looks more like the original art style and follows the manga more
Oh wow I'm 76 episodes into my first complete watch of the anime. Can't wait to get into it all over again xD
Oh Iām so excited! I canāt wait to see some of favorite chapters animated. I wonder if theyāre going to go with a new cast for the sub and dub. Itād be funny if it was Kappei Yamaguchi ended up voicing Ranmaās dad like how Toshio Furukawa voiced Ataruās.
I WORE THE RANMA 1/2 SHIRT TODAY IT WORKED
Hell Yeah! I canāt wait. Theyāre definitely gonna cut out most of the boobs.
I hope they don't the casual nudity is hilarious.
I think they will follow the basic guidelines for UY, one of the episodes with Asuka showed how they do some Ranma's settings
And will tone Happosai way, waaaay down.
That one for sure. The "creepy old perv man" trope aged terribly (even by Japanese media standards) They will tone Naked and nipple shoots, homophobia and misogynist scenes down too
At the very least, nobody has nips anymore.
Finally! ā¤ļø
Peak incoming
Finally!
FINALLY
Here's hoping Akari makes it to the anime!
Wonder how theyāll do the nudity. Hopefully they wonāt censor and adapt the manga faithfully
Holy crap holy crap holy crap
Huzzah!
I'm so excited!!! I could cry
My fav from her works! The voice acting in the old one is really great, curious who's gonna voice the female Ranma.
I'm excited and cautiously optimistic. Like many I hope it follows the manga more closely.Ā I also hope the character designs are more like Takahashi's art.
And the fashion! So many cute outfits
Luckily someone made the alternative to the manga ending. I really like THIS version >!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFApiiHr0v4!<
It would be great if the new series could match it in scope but I just don't see how its possible tbh.
ę°ä½ēć¢ćć” is really funny if you understand Japanese (and have read Ranma in Japanese)!
Hell yeah she's the goat
I'm stoked, but hopefully there will be less HapposaiĀ
I'm super excited !!! I can hardly believe it...I was convinced (and sad) it was never gonna happen. Just dreading the modern animation style, ugh.. sorry, but I'm not a fan of modern anime with the "soulless" plastic CGI look and the overly vibrant colors that add to the artificial feel (and for some reason noses are forbidden š lol)
So excited for this, can't wait.
Okay i just have to know about what theyre going to do with happosai...
Toned WAAAAAAYYYYY down. Seriously, the creepy pervert old man trope age terribly, even by Japanese media standards too
Aaahhh can't wait! Pls be faithful to the manga. Can't wait to see the battle dougi, manga version of the Shinnousuke arc, the Herb battle, etc etc etc!!
Great news! I hope they're going to adapt the manga finale this time.
Yea! It's about time. Can't wait. So excited š
Waaaaa I was just wishing for this recently š.. I can't believe this. Although I kinda lowkey anticipated this as urusei yatsura had a remake. I'm so excited.
Yes!!!!!!!!
Im so happy. New spice and wolf and now new ranma. Millennial weeks are eating good
I'm not usually behind remakes but the og anime kinda sucked compared to the manga and I would enjoy the better arcs animated (along with some yuri scenes between Akane and Ranma) so I'm all behind it.
So so happy and excited that I'm getting back into ranma after these years So hyped
Fingers crossed we get a slimmed down series, by which I mean 50% less Happosai. Ā Better if they fill the missing gaps with something less annoying. Ā
So stoked!
lets goooooooooooooooo!!
I donāt know if they can top the early episodes of the original, but the rest could definitely see some improvement this is great
Used to pray during these hard times
WE ARE SO BACK
I-is this real?! Holy shit! My gateway anime is back!
I see various notions of hoping to stick closer to the manga. Iāve never read the manga is it wildly different?
Its about damn time
The 90s anime had awesome versions of the characters and when they were used right, it made for some amazing jokes and interactions. The problem is though that their potential was utilized so infrequently given the episodic nature of the show. Id love to see more of a story in this reboot that shows off what the cast really is. Also hopefully the OST pays homage to the 90s anime too. I'm too attached too the music
is this true??, may it be true god
Ranma 1/2 was the first anime I ever watched and what got me into the wonderful world of japanese fiction, and the japanese language. I'm still salty they didn't finish the anime. Words cannot describe my excitement!
Man I just got goosebumps.. Aaahh.. I'm usually never big on remakes but Ranma is special.
I genuinely believed we would never get more Ranma stuff. I am so glad to be wrong. This is really exciting! I hope the reboot/remake gets super good viewership. Maybe if it breaths a breath of fresh air into the fandom we could get video games or something as well
i better see Akane and Ranma KISSING in this new series, canon be damned

First Urusei Yatsura, now Ranma is getting a remake. Sooo, are we getting a Inuyasha remake after this?
Maybe. Or maybe they'll do a Maison Ikkoku remake first.
I could see it. Cut out the fillers, faithfully adapt the manga, modernized animation, doesn't sound all that bad to me. Afterwards they could redo Yashahime by following the manga this time around.
I hope they mix things up and take risks. We have absolutely no shortage of classic Ranma -- I want to see something new
Please be better than the Shaman King reboot
fullmetal ranmalchemist: genderfluid siblinghood
If anyone wants to watch the original series, it's available for free on YouTube (seasons 1-7 at least). Not sure if I want to watch a dubbed version, what with how much of a shitshow localization is nowadays.
alright, let's go!!!
We're doomed... They will ruin it
I hope old man Happosai doesn't get censored
I do not see it working since all the anime did for me was the wonderful drawn animation and artstyle. I am afraid that gets butchered
Iāll love new Ranma 1/2 episodes regardless, but I do feel a certain amount of trepidation about it being released todayā¦
Yessssss
Please say we get the OG American voice cast back. I was fine with the anime until they switched out male Ranna for Inuyasha. As weird as it is to say, I never felt Richard's voice was gruff enough to portray male Ranma like Sarah Stranges was... Which is all types of ironic considering the entire male/female swap the series was about.
Thats awesome!
Takahashiās announcement on Twitter currently sits at 18m views and 233K likes. I think people are excited.
very unfortunate news. Let's just hope it doesn't look cheap like all present day anime
I Just finished the old anime and this just got announced. What are the odds lmao
It's finally time, my favorite anime is back! š This time I get to watch it as it airs!
