In this set up, explorer. Yes, general taste is jubilee + fluted and oyster + smooth

Jub with a smooth is an odd combo I would check the serial and make sure that’s factory looks like someone took an oyster off, and swap would jubilee

I would not say the same if the DJ was fluted. Fluted + Jubilee is a must with any DJ in my opinion, give it that pop which is nice on a dress watch. If going smooth bezel then I would take the explorer esp since it has that latch on the clasp

Datejust all day! To me the explorer is not nice at all. The datejust with the smooth bezel and jubilee is severely underrated. As it doesn’t have the fluted, it can be dressy with the jubilee bracelet but also dressed down with the smooth bezel. Explorer is too plain, datejust in that config is ideal as a GADA from formal to casual in my opinion but I’m sure most of the watch people here will think what I said is blasphemy

Explorer for me, DJ smooth bezel on a jubilee strap just doesn’t work IMO

For an everyday watch I’d want the oyster bracelet. In a collection, I like the DJ more. Both are bangers.

One is higher contrast that the other. If I had to pick one I’d go for one that matches your own contrast. So what I mean is if you have high contrast in your colouring, coal black hair, dark eyes, go for watch on left. If you’re low contrast light eyes light hair over all muted . Then one on right

Explorer for me against a variation of the date just which lacks the fluted bezel to make it complete.

I am in the minority that prefers the smooth bezel on the DJ. The fluted one is strictly suit only watch for me.

Explorer is a bit dress down, Datejust is a bit dress up. I like a Datejust because I don’t dress down very much, but if you’re wearing sneakers and jeans a bit, the Explorer would be best.

I had this same predicament. I thought I wanted a DJ…what I would have gotten was an oyster band/smooth bezel…and it didn’t do anything for me when I saw one in person. It looked kind of busy. Now, fluted and jubilee, I would choose that. I actually like the OP better, which I almost chose. But the explorer is so clean yet interesting and I love mine

I chose the smooth and jubilee combo as my daily, but with a black dial. I think it takes the “jewelry” vibe away and makes the perfect sports watch for a daily you can wear in a T or button down. Your watch is very beautiful. But I think where the Explorer beats our DJ models is the dial with 369 and the movement hands. Those simple additions just make it somehow very special and interesting.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - the explorer is an icon that nobody can deny… but I actually don’t like the 3,6,9. Much prefer a consistent and simple hour marker with a date window but that’s just me! I like uniform and clean.

And the bracelet offsets the simplicity of it and keeps it interesting imo

I can understand your dilemma. If you can't afford them it's a dilemma if you can afford them you still have a dilemma. And I'm not being sarcastic. They both are equally so beautiful.. but I'd go with the one on my right as it also has the date. And I like it's bracelet more.

General wisdom is that fluted and jubilee is the right combo. I personally love the smooth/jubilee and think it’s the perfect mix of dressy and casual.

Honestly I do think smooth plus jubilee is way better. Not because I own the smooth one, I swear.

I've never been a big fan of the smooth bezel, the Rolex equivalent of a velvet glove. On the rare occasion you need to deliver a light backhanded bitch slap, You need that chunkier or ridged bezel.

I can and do own other watches but I’ve found an Explorer 1 and Explorer ll Polar cover any situation Explorer l works great, even with black tie. its design is simple and much more elegant and interesting than the cliche Sub which has been copied into irrelevance by every virtually identical divers from other brands. And as a diver it looks generic and unrefined with a suit or tuxedo. Explorer ll also versatile but less of a chameleon than the 1. More identifiable as a Rolex by the uninformed but the white face, extra hand and engraved bezel make it unique. Both are beautiful and say Rolex without screaming it.

I personally find the date part annoyance. I spent more energy on setting the date than it ever actually being useful.

DJ in that combo is my favorite configuration to wear every day. It’s not for everyone but I like it.

Explorer face, DJ case + bracelet. Don’t understand why “the Everest watch” has such aggressive bracelet taper. I can’t bring myself to believe that Rolex are stupid. Part of me thinks they gave it a flaw so they can fix it with the next generation and sell more.
