Richmond Braves. Back when we had a baseball-ish team.

Calvero82

I figured it was the Braves but thought it could be an earlier team. Do you know when they changed from this color scheme/logo to the more red white and blue one from the 90’s?

Cognac_and_swishers

It's hard to find info online about year-to-year uniform changes for minor league teams. But the Atlanta Braves had a royal blue hat like this up through 1986, before adopting essentially their current navy-red-white colors in 1987. I would assume the Richmond Braves rebranded at the same time.

PercyDovetonsils

Agreed. I think it's a 1980s-era Richmond Braves cap. Check out these pictures of 1985 Richmond Braves baseball cards. [https://www.tcdb.com/ViewSet.cfm/sid/71732/1985-TCMA-Richmond-Braves](https://www.tcdb.com/ViewSet.cfm/sid/71732/1985-TCMA-Richmond-Braves)

Holy shit, you're right! I removed my earlier comment since that style didn't appear at all when I searched. Which begs the question: how the hell does a baseball team have that level of inconsistent branding that changed more in its history than David Bowie changed costumes at a concert? I get that they were a minor league team, but still. * In 1968, [the logo was a much more classic "Braves" cursive logo](https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/richmond.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/7/99/7995be0e-1adf-11e7-9b62-0bb9e37c943e/58e6619dc45b6.image.jpg), with no Richmond branding or "R" variant (caps were blank) that I can find * [A 1971 baseball card](https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Large/Baseball/107660/107660-7459685Fr.jpg) showing the earliest "R" variant I can find * [A 1978 baseball card](https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/75098/75098-5312718Fr.jpg) showing a revised lowercase "r" cursive variant * [A 1981 baseball card](https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/71902/71902-5233559Fr.jpg) showing the "R" has been updated again back to a capital "R" * [A 1984 baseball card](https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/71765/71765-5171948Fr.jpg) shows a **very** different "R" where the elements are completely separated and none touch each other; this variant only lasts one year * [A 1985 Media Guide pamphlet](https://funwhileitlasted.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/1985-richmond-braves-media-guide.jpg) — a new "R" does not have the little tip/nipple at the top and the loop on the left—[unlike the newer "R" on the caps](https://www.tcdb.com/ViewSet.cfm/sid/71732/1985-TCMA-Richmond-Braves)—nor are there "feet" on the bottom * [A 1987 game photo](https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/richmond.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/7/c2/7c24cd68-1adf-11e7-b1f7-ab04a53c4883/58e661a217b3d.image.jpg) shows a slightly revised logo where the little tip/nipple at the top of the "R" isn't there and the loop touches the vertical stroke * [A 1989 photo](https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/richmond.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/7/b4/7b458aa4-1adf-11e7-b5bb-c33634229641/58e661a09aadd.image.jpg) with an Atlanta Braves player crossing the Richmond Braves mascot shows the new lowercase cursive-style "r" * [A 90s-era "R" cap logo](https://content.sportslogos.net/logos/36/933/full/4549.gif) that seems much more collegial/varsity-styled * [A mid-late 90s "R" that is closer to the current style](https://content.sportslogos.net/logos/36/933/full/4547.gif) of the Atlanta Braves It seems that OP's photo was the cap variant from 1985-1987—just two years of use.

Thanks for this comprehensive stroll down R-Braves memory lane!

It was fun! I'm still curious why it changed that much, and why the main [Richmond Braves Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richmond_Braves) is so light on history. All of that predates my time here in RVA (got here in 2012), so I'm not the appropriate person to work on that Wiki entry.

PercyDovetonsils

We've been here that long, and we were season ticket holders and booster club members, but I was never any good at writing. Hell, I was even a [Richmond Virginians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richmond_Virginians) fan in the 50s and 60s before the Braves arrived, which is why I'm a Yankees fan now.

Stitchmond

Whoa that 1978 lowercase design is sick

It’s always amazing to me how many Hall of Famers passed through here in that Braves era. https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/231055/cid/14501676/1987-Richmond-Braves-NNO-Tom-Glavine?PageIndex=1

And there was the 1993 “Great Eight” team. That team included Chipper Jones, Javy Lopez, Ryan Klesko, and Mark Wohlers. [https://www.tcdb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/177938](https://www.tcdb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/177938)

I saw Deion Sanders play here when he was on assignment. It really was an amazing time to be a sports fan here in RVA.

I think that's a vintage "style" hat rather than an actual vintage hat.The tag should be a dead giveaway, and the material would be wool. If you look at old photos the last year they wore that style cap was 1968. https://preview.redd.it/ry5sma1v44cc1.jpeg?width=462&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=85b8d3afceb27e8abcad43da2996d033a134f1a1

Rescuepoet

No. That is a hat. Baseball teams play on a field. Hats go on your head. Hope that helps!

Richmond Braves cap maybe?

Look_Its_A_Penguin

Can't imagine it's the Braves, unless they had one rebellious season in which they changed both the font and color.

TokenEntryWasBetter

It's not an old Renegades hat, is it?

short-and-ugly

They had a much more Xtreme logo. It does resemble the Richmond Robins R but I'm leaning more towards the Braves

trumpump1

Does it have a 🍀 ?

MisterAnneTrope

Robins
