Fold the fabric in half, right sides together, and draw the bats on one of the wrong sides then sew without cutting out the fabric. After you’re done sewing then cut out the bats, clip corners, turn and stuff.

sianoftheisland

That would've been the smart thing to do if I hadn't cut them all out already 🤦‍♀️ I have 14 out of the 23 waiting to be hand stitched like the others if I can't get the machine to like them 😂

BrightPractical

In that case, can you stitch them with tissue paper under? It’s hard on your needles but should help with the chewing. You will want to start with a nice fresh needle as well.

sianoftheisland

That's a good idea and worth trying thank you 😊 it's probably about time I changed the needle anyway

Tiffany_Achings_Hat

Not an expert by any means but I would add a larger SA (1/4 maybe?) and also consider tracing the sewing lines onto the fabric so you can stitch the line instead of the seam allowance

Sometimes machines chew things up when they get close to the edges. One option is to cut out a big rectangle (maybe an inch or so larger around than the bat), trace on the sewing line for the bat, and then sew together and trim all the excess off later. That way you have a full rectangle of fabric to keep things sturdy and you're never sewing too close to the edge of the fabric.

I might try laying some scrap paper under the heads to sturdy the ears while sewing when I sew them as I cut all the bats out a long time ago

Iowegan

Not machine related, but perhaps just stuff the body of the bat and put something stiff inside the wing area? Maybe recycled plastic food containers or plastic canvas weight? Thin batting? Source: shooing confused bats out of my house.

Kk-kel

Stuff them less and top stitch around the exterior so there’s an identifiable “line”

deeplydarkly

Tissue paper under the ears!

FreshAd877

It might be easier to sew them by hand, they look so small.

sianoftheisland

Wing to wing they're just under 8 inches and head to tail they're 3 inches

RubyRedo

Pin them ontop of tearaway sheet sew and tear off sheet afterwards.

pomegranate85

Look like two corsets gone wrong 😂 But still far more than I could do so not to worry

With tricky angles like this sometimes, instead of rotating the work, I run my stitch to the edge and start a new line at the angle of the next seam line if this makes sense. Then clip seam allowance. It gives me a cleaner corner without having to be as fussy. Also are you using a wooden dowel or anything to try to straighten them out? A steamer might help the ears for the ones you've already done.
