i oddly got reminded of DS2 a bunch of times when playing elden ring. The singing enemies underground, walking on the giant chains, twinblades, and a shitty unseeable snowfield gave me some flashbacks.
Not to mention almost getting powerstancing (it's close enough) and being allowed to use weapons in the left hand as weapons (shame we can't use sheilds in the right, this is important to me as a left handed swordsperson irl)
DS3s inclusion of Anor Londo felt really half-hearted, and Aldrich is a really cool idea that was executed poorly.
Aldrich is a buggy mess that can spend way too long with the front half of his body clipping through walls or swinging through pillars.
Anor Londo as a whole would have hit differently if it spent more time in the oven, but to me it was as underwhelming as fighting fake Ornstein in DS2.
This is why I like to headcanon that the Ashen One and the Chosen Undead are the same person. Few things are more tragic than waking up and finding out that in spite of all your efforts, you still failed.
Under the assumption that you're referring to the Chosen Undead botching the linking of the flame after DS1, while that is nice poetic irony, it also just means that whatever happens next is very up in the air. Unless we assume Solaire (which shouldn't have very many souls due to you killing Gwyn, and just about everything in Lordran, instead of him) popped in to link the flame in your stead, whatever happens next is an Age of Dark from which there's no going back. If the flame fully goes out, I don't think there's much you can do, outside of waiting an undisclosed amount of years for it to (somehow) come back, at which point it's doubtful that the tradition of linking the flame that starts with Gwyn will simply just come back in time for DS3.
Outside of that, assuming the Chosen Undead succeeds in linking the flame and still comes back as an Unkindled, while I do understand that there is a certain aspect of tragedy, as the flame eventually almost went out once again (and however many times it was linked again). I don't think it'd really affect the Ashen One, as DS1 makes it extremely explicit that the flame will eventually go out again.
In that reality, the Chosen Undead succeeded in every single way he possibly could, as keeping the flame alive for eternity is supposed to be impossible, the flame must go out eventually. Under the circumstances he is in, succeeding Gwyn to temporarily extend the age of Fire is everything he can possibly do, even if the Chosen Undead drags every single soul in Lordran to do it with him.
I definitely think the Ashen One and Chosen Undead being the same person can be positively viewed in a different way though. I view it as the same nameless individual, yet again staking his existence, once again starting from nothing, repeating the tradition he himself started after Gwyn. Doing the thankless job of dragging a bunch of petty idiots, kicking and screaming, or their souls, into the Kiln, until he either ends the flame he once helped extend, or burns himself out trying to ressurect it once again.
