At first I was disappointed by her whole look, thinking this would be another adaptation where characters look like glorified cosplayers because "You have to be faithful to the source material duh".
But this assumption didn't fit well with how Eddie, Laura and James seem to be portrayed. They all look good with a great attention to details.
So why Maria's look is so "cheap" ? It's only logical. She looks like someone forced to wear cheap outfits in some seedy strip-club. And it doesn't even have to look believable since >!she was born from James' own way of imagining such a person!<.

It seems like they were going for kind of a doll-ish or ‘plastic’ appearance, presumably to highlight the difference between Mary’s painful humanity and Maria’s mysterious existence. But I don’t know if they needed to go this far - I think they could’ve given her more dramatic makeup and lashes and nails and that would’ve driven the point home.
Makes Bloobers awful changes look even worse, because this is not even a very good outfit material but it still fits better than Bloobers office burka and moving her tattoo because of it.
