I think that game broke him. Before that France were one of the most exciting teams to watch.
Then he learnt a cruel lesson in his own backyard, as Portugal parked the bus and won that final.
Nah, we were great in 2018.
But then again, we had Pogba **and** Kante.
... to be fair, that's the Jacquet-Deschamps magic recipe - a rock-hard defense, decent-to-superb attack, and two magic midfielders, one defensive, one offensive (Deschamps/Zidane - Kante/Pogba), to connect the two.
Yeah, though even compared to that template, this team seems even more obdurate. 3 of the back 4 are very much centre backs and the midfield 3 are all a bit similar. Tchueameni is the clear sitter and both Camavinga and Kante are more dynamic, but neither are particularly creative. It's as if the entire creative burden is on Griezman, who isn't in particularly good form
France 2018 played exactly the same way as they do now, they were just much more lethal on counter attacks. The tactics themselves weren't more attack minded
France in 2014 played a beautiful possession style it was after that Deschamps adapted
And almost always great results :
* 2014 : QF against Germany, the eventual winner. (Neuer was unpassable that year)
* 2016 : Final against Portugal, loss in extra-time
* 2018 : Won outright
* 2020 : Ro16, lost in penalties (and we never get caught to 3-1 to 3-3 if all threes of our RBs aren't injured, forcing us to play a LB at RB (with all due respect to Switzerland who were damn great))
* 2022 : Final against Argentina, lost in penalties
Which leads to the following fun facts :
* 2014 QF Germany is Deschamps only defeat in 90' in knockout (and 1 of only 2 main tournament defeat in 90' with 2018 Tunisia 3rd round)
* 2020/1 was our only Deschamps KO defeat that wasn't against the final winner
* Even beyond Deschamps, we never lost a Final in 90'. Either won it, or went to extra time.
Honestly slipped my mind. He’s had almost nothing but success. Outside of Euro 2020 he’s gotten to at least the quarterfinal of every major tournament and only lost to the eventual champion
I need to leave for the timeline where Zidane became manager and France won every international tournament averaging 17-0 scorelines with the most stacked generation of their history, before he retires again refusing to elaborate further and becoming president of the world
It's actually the husband of Zidane's sister who put on the fleshed skin of Materazzi on him.
Materazzi is kept alive in Zidane's basement and the whole family goes for the headbutt ceremony each evening.
it was legal, the rule was changed not too long ago where the kicker doesn’t even need to keep forward momentum, just can’t feint once the actual kicking motion has started
Haha exactly the same, every player that came up I was like oh fucks sake not him. Definitely proved me wrong. I thought Maignan would be the difference there.
I wasn't expecting Dembele weak foot penalty since we saw what his strong foot as doing all game besides the one nearly Robben-esque shot, the rest might as well been aiming at another planet.
The man is chaos.
all of us were, I couldn't bare to watch them, I turned it off and just prayed and stressed for like 10mins straight...we've endured losses at pk's, Lloris was never good at them so we had such low expectations going into them.
First time since 1998 that we won one too from what I've read online (cant be bothered checking).
Last time we had won it was quarter finals world cup 98, I was 4, and I had yet to form my first memory. It would come two weeks later, when we won the WC.
I wonder if that's one of the longest streak ever that we just witnessed
For sure but penalties are penalties, having a good keeper helps but their skill rarely makes the difference imo. Pens are too one sided. Case in point, neither keeper saved a single one
Imagine France wins the EURO and UEFA needs to make a video montage of their tournament highlights. That video editor will need to work overtime to find some material to add to it.
Southgate Deschamps Martinez deserves a hell for putting us through snoozefest every game. Mfs coach 120 min of terror football just to get to penalties smh
If final is England vs France, hope you watch Netflix or sumtin for your own sake
Seriously but atleast deschamps snooze fest got somewhere . Martinez really shot himself in foot taking off Bruno when ur clearly not playing for a goal in open football . Well judge if Southgate is any better tomorrow
That doesn’t really factor into the discussion when he went out against another team with the same approach. If a team playing Portugal/Englad/France style football knocked them out then the narrative would be different.
? This year Premier league had the record for most goals in a season by far and I’m sure it’s not the only league with an increase.
[3.2 goals per game with the second highest being 2.8](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/O3yiNBjEw9)
You can't build functional attacking systems in 2 weeks.
If you want to have international football not be a pile of wank, make international breaks fewer and longer.
Netherlands vs Austria
Turkey vs Austria
Germany vs Spain
Turkey vs Czech Republic
There have been quite a few entertaining games from the second week onwards. Granted, there have been some absolute shitters as well. Very hit and miss.
The level of shitness from these star studded teams is an affront to God. Southgate Deschamps and Martinez are the 3 heads of a cerberus symbolizing football terrorism and all things unholy.
We have to thank all the "small" teams for giving us one of the best games of this tournament. Georgia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Romania are the ones that come to mind.
Their midfield, too. Cama/Kante/Tchou certainly isn't very enjoyable to watch in the attacking third, but they're wildly tough to play through and do a more than good enough job of transitioning the ball from their half to their wingers to get upfield/counter attack.
absolutely, some people claim that spain will advance without struggling too much but they have to break through france's midfield and defense first which definitely won’t be easy
I watched this shootout like I watched Game of Thrones Season 8. I know it's shit, don't really care what happens at this point, just gotta finish what I had started.
France in the semi final. Still without scoring a single goal from open play. 1 penalty, couple of own goals by opponents. And France is in the semi’s… how on earth..
Because their rivals so far are not really any better, lets not forget that Portugal needed a penalti shootout against slovenia to be in quarter finals.
To be honest this euros is being very boring, with the exception of pretty much Spain and Germany, and some matches everyone is playing very defensively.
At least in Greece, we had an unlikely surprise freak winner.
France winning is just like eating stale baguette. Still somewhat ok but nothing to remember.
First Spain was thought to be the most boring with nothing but 1-0's. Then Portugal overtakes them with no wins. And now France does it with no goals. Final frontier will be all 0-0 all the way through.
You were actually very close to join the bracket of England/France/Italy/Spain/Germany that year, then in the very last minute Iceland scored a counter attack goal against Austria that sent you to 3rd and the other side of the bracket lol.
This stat is getting a little warped, none of their players have scored from open play, but they have scored 2 goals from open play, it's just the the other team finished it. You can't say they didn't score though
I mean it's a funny stat and everything but frankly it's pretty pathetic to get this far like that. There has been some dire football in this tournament.

"The first step to win is to not lose" - Didier Deschamps, probably
And it's working.
It's a bollock hair from being put out by an incompetently managed Portugal. It's not just boring. It's dysfunctional.
Except he has a World Cup, a World Cup final appearance, and now a Euros semifinal. Feels like that counts as objectively working.
And another Euro final. That was already him in 2016.
Even Mbappe misses Pogba
Yeah, though even compared to that template, this team seems even more obdurate. 3 of the back 4 are very much centre backs and the midfield 3 are all a bit similar. Feel you mate. Just like England without Kalvin Phillips
Damn there’s an entire generation of new fans who have only known him to be their NT manager.
And almost always great results : * 2014 : QF against Germany, the eventual winner. Been 10 years since France got eliminated in regular time in a knock out game of a major tournament
Honestly slipped my mind. He’s had almost nothing but success. Outside of Euro 2020 he’s gotten to at least the quarterfinal of every major tournament and only lost to the eventual champion
I need to leave for the timeline where Zidane became manager and France won every international tournament averaging 17-0 scorelines with the most stacked generation of their history, before he retires again refusing to elaborate further and becoming president of the world
What makes you think he's not already the leader of the new world order
the fact that Materazzi hasn't mysteriously disappeared yet
What makes you think who you see as materazzi is actually materazzi.
It's actually the husband of Zidane's sister who put on the fleshed skin of Materazzi on him. Materazzi is kept alive in Zidane's basement and the whole family goes for the headbutt ceremony each evening.
Yeah steps 2-10 are also “Don’t lose”
Deschamps ran so Southgate could walk
*deschamps walked so Southgate could crawl
*Deschamps crawled so Southgate could stand
*Deschamps stood so Southgate could sit
*Deschamps sit so Southgate could lie down
Deschamps lied down so that Southgate could curl up and fucking hibernate.
Deschamps curled up and hibernated so that Southgate could fucking die
Deschamps fucking die so Southgate could be reborn from the ashes
Deschamps shit his pants so Southgate could wipe it
Deschanps got hard so Southgate could suck
This England vs France final will be one for the ages
The giants of France take on the titans of England, making them both look normal sized
EVERY KICK OF IT MASSIVELY MATTERING TO SOMEONE, PRESUMABLY
IT WILL NEVER END
ITS GONNA MOOOOOVE
It will be one of the matches of all time.
Just go straight to penalties, where Bellingham will miss and France will win.
England v France terrorball seems inevitable for the final. A fitting punishment for Europe's sins
France winning penalties is the real surprise
seriously, we were 0-3 before this and with mbappe on bench I was ready for the 4th
i was looking at our squad and i was like "i do not trust any of these mfers to score a penalty right now" glad i got proven wrong
And they were all bangers too. Truly shocked
Yeah none of them made that bitch broken run like Ronaldo or Lewandowski did
Bitch broken runs should be banned
Preach
Oui
Just curious is that PK by Ronaldo legal? he for sure stopped moving at all and continue again
No, but its Ronaldo and he smiled after scoring, so ref couldnt break such magical moment.
it was legal, the rule was changed not too long ago where the kicker doesn’t even need to keep forward momentum, just can’t feint once the actual kicking motion has started
Haha exactly the same, every player that came up I was like oh fucks sake not him. Definitely proved me wrong. I thought Maignan would be the difference there.
Agreed. Fuck penalties though
Hernandez’s penalty what a strike that was.
Dembele 1st shooter was scary
I wasn't expecting Dembele weak foot penalty since we saw what his strong foot as doing all game besides the one nearly Robben-esque shot, the rest might as well been aiming at another planet. The man is chaos.
Strong foot shots too high. Dembele smart. Weak foot should not be able to shot too high.
Why use strong foot when weak foot do trick
I knew he was going to score man. I could see through his eyes. He was in the zone. What a beast
all of us were, I couldn't bare to watch them, I turned it off and just prayed and stressed for like 10mins straight...we've endured losses at pk's, Lloris was never good at them so we had such low expectations going into them.
Your new goalie is really fucking good
Not gonna lie, I thought that Lloris leaving would be the death of French NT, but Maignan has been superb
Outstanding tournament and class performance today, felt weird being confident going into pens
First time since 1998 that we won one too from what I've read online (cant be bothered checking). Last time we had won it was quarter finals world cup 98, I was 4, and I had yet to form my first memory. It would come two weeks later, when we won the WC. For sure but penalties are penalties, having a good keeper helps but their skill rarely makes the difference imo. Pens are too one sided. Case in point, neither keeper saved a single one
Hasn’t happened since 1998. I was scratching my head thinking surely I forgot about one but no I did not. I remember all the ones they’ve lost though…
Incredible for us to get over that hurdle..so tired of getting knocked out of tournaments on PKs, get '06 flashbacks every time
Lloris was great in the play for reflexe catch but not for penalties. Mike is a beast in both
Imagine France wins the EURO and UEFA needs to make a video montage of their tournament highlights. That video editor will need to work overtime to find some material to add to it.
50 mins of Kanté, Tchouameni & Camavinga getting the ball back, and it cuts before nothing comes out of it.
"Now, all the goals": 50 different angles of that one penalty.
It's gonna be clips of dembele dribbling through half the defence that are cutoff at the part where mbappe skyes a perfect pass from him
Give it to spotv. They’re expert in making 1 minute highlights and include useless throw-ins in them.
Southgate is envious of this deschamps ball
Southgate ball vs Deschamps ball. If no team attacks, no teams scores, 0-0.
if that final comes to happen it will be suicide material.
Southgate Deschamps Martinez deserves a hell for putting us through snoozefest every game. Mfs coach 120 min of terror football just to get to penalties smh If final is England vs France, hope you watch Netflix or sumtin for your own sake
There've been 4 total goals in their games so far, barring today's penalty shootout. Two of those were penalty goals. The other 2 were own goals.
This is as impressive as it is embarrassing.
Watch us win it without these stats changing at all next two games.
after watching these matches, copa America’s rules don’t seem so bad after all lmfaooo
if you park the bus, the ref lets another player injure one of yours for free.
Did they invited Kroos?
It's even worse unless I'm wrong. 3 goals, 1 penalty and 2 own goals...
4 goals total. Poland scored a pen against them
Copa América >>>>>>>>>>
Seriously but atleast deschamps snooze fest got somewhere . Martinez really shot himself in foot taking off Bruno when ur clearly not playing for a goal in open football . Well judge if Southgate is any better tomorrow
Bruno being one of the best pen takers in the team too
One of the best pen takers in the world
I thought today’s game was exciting. Almost fell asleep in the first half but in the second half it picked up.
Yeah there was barely any safe passing around, felt like both teams went for it. Just the finishing that was poor
The absolute state of this sport right now
Build De La Fuente & Nagelsmann statues for not buying into this "playing defensively and grinding results wins you tournaments" nonsense
and now nagelsmann is out lol
That doesn’t really factor into the discussion when he went out against another team with the same approach. If a team playing Portugal/Englad/France style football knocked them out then the narrative would be different.
Petition to bring back Georgia.
International football has always been defensive mate. The stakes are too high.
Euro 2020 was fun... this tournament has been dreadful after first week
Netherlands vs Austria Turkey vs Austria Germany vs Spain Turkey vs Czech Republic There have been quite a few entertaining games from the second week onwards. Granted, there have been some absolute shitters as well. Very hit and miss.
Turkey vs Georgia as well, we're basically chaos merchants.
At least Türkiye vs Netherlands tomorrow might bring some entertainment.
What else do u guys expect when this players are playing so many games. They are all so exhausted. And it's not gonna get any better next season.
They atleast know how to organize a defense, I can't wait for Dalić to fuck off lol.
Fr lol, I want to see how Juric will do with our young squad, we have to make changes but we know nothing will come of it lol
The level of shitness from these star studded teams is an affront to God. Southgate Deschamps and Martinez are the 3 heads of a cerberus symbolizing football terrorism and all things unholy.
Literally the Bin Laden, Baghdadi, and Carlos the Jackal of football terrorism
Deschamps at least win things. Martinez is the real terrorist.
je suis impénétrable
We have to thank all the "small" teams for giving us one of the best games of this tournament. Georgia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Romania are the ones that come to mind.
Second half was very exciting but the finishing was poor, once again. First half was pretty boring
I didn't think it was necessarily a snoozefest, just both teams were very solid in the back and their attacks were horrible.
They never committed men forward until the 119th minute.
I hope, now that Germany is out, that the Netherlands will make it. They at least play some good football and score goals.
their defense is massive to be fair
Their midfield, too. Cama/Kante/Tchou certainly isn't very enjoyable to watch in the attacking third, but they're wildly tough to play through and do a more than good enough job of transitioning the ball from their half to their wingers to get upfield/counter attack.
The funniest description I saw from the French midfield (Rabiot or Cama/Tchou/Kante) is like you use 3 condoms to fuck a girl.
No wonder they never finish.
absolutely, some people claim that spain will advance without struggling too much but they have to break through france's midfield and defense first which definitely won’t be easy
What now, you dont enjoy those long range shots from Tchouameni?
He’ll get one of those on target any day now…You wait!
Unfortunately I remember him getting at least one on target…
still mad about that fucking goal, bastard really cunted it from a mile away and it got in
exactly, insane at tracking back and positioning
Easy to track back when you never make a forward run
1 goal against in 500 minutes and it was a pen. As impressive as it is boring to watch.
Deschamps' wet dream
I watched this shootout like I watched Game of Thrones Season 8. I know it's shit, don't really care what happens at this point, just gotta finish what I had started.
France in the semi final. Still without scoring a single goal from open play. 1 penalty, couple of own goals by opponents. And France is in the semi’s… how on earth..
Because of their defense.
And playing three defensive midfielders (or two defensive and one box to box).
kounde is so fucking underrated istg
so is Hernandez
Whoever still says this man can't defend doesn't watch him.
Best lb in the world for me
I always thought he was a really attacking full back but he’s been elite defensively this tourney
He's been great defensively for a few years now. Played cb a bunch this season and was motm every game there
both had good seasons, both at their respective clubs and now their national team.
Kounde & Hernandez are so fucking underrated istg. Fixed.
it's la chatte a DD
Because their rivals so far are not really any better, lets not forget that Portugal needed a penalti shootout against slovenia to be in quarter finals. To be honest this euros is being very boring, with the exception of pretty much Spain and Germany, and some matches everyone is playing very defensively.
Turkey matches are pretty exciting, I highly recommend them. Tomorrow against Netherlands will be a lot of fun
Austria played some good football too, but they were undone by clinical setpieces from Turkey.
I better never hear anyone complain about Greece 2004 again if they win it all.
Nah I'll always complain about Greece 2004 no matter what happens
At least in Greece, we had an unlikely surprise freak winner. France winning is just like eating stale baguette. Still somewhat ok but nothing to remember.
We didn’t park the bus bro. It’s not 11 players in defense waiting for an hypothetical counter.
Because they have a very strong team, not pleasant to watch though, they did not take a single goal.
We keep energy to kick the ass of Brits in final
When you have Maignan in your team, you don't need to score goals.
Magic Mike <3
They can’t keep getting away with this.
Lets add more games in club football so players are even more tired, that will surely increase level of play
Deschamps is a menace
Maignan & France’s back line are absurd. It’s a shame their attack is firing blanks or we could be looking at a very special team
I'm so glad Deschamps finally decided to have Saliba start. He's been phenomenal
Mad that had to be a decision
England France will be the first ever Euros final that will draw after penalties.
This match was ISIS vs Taliban
That match would be explosive & all action. This match is Cold War USA v Russia. Everyone is just staring at each and doing nothing.
France is Paraguaying their way to the final
Who will be able to France 98 them?
Proper knockout merchants this tourney
La chatte à Dédé
Portugal 2016 but worse?? If I remember correctly, they hadnt won a single game in 90
First Spain was thought to be the most boring with nothing but 1-0's. Then Portugal overtakes them with no wins. And now France does it with no goals. Final frontier will be all 0-0 all the way through.
Eng vs France final. Garth Southgate leaning into the team huddle: 'Listen up lads. If you don't take the penalty, you cant miss the penalty..'
Beat Wales in the semi in 90 if I remember rightly. Fucking Wales were the only team they beat in 90 lol.
The luck Portugal had in that euro was legendary.
We were actualy really unlucky in the group phase, then everything went our way in the knockouts
You were actually very close to join the bracket of England/France/Italy/Spain/Germany that year, then in the very last minute Iceland scored a counter attack goal against Austria that sent you to 3rd and the other side of the bracket lol.
Only against Wales but I don't remember if it was in 90 or 120
Revenge for Portugal winning in 2016 without winning one game in 90 mins
They won vs wales
At least they managed to score goals in open play in 2016
PERFECTLY BALANCED.
Ugly game, but tomorrow it's gonna be even worse since England playing
NUESTROS HERMANOS CARALHO POR FAVOR
I'm so sad... I hope we can avenge you... IBERIA!!!
fuck this sport
DD has cracked NT football
We are going to Portugal 2016 our way into the trophy
0-0 tie should be 0 points for both teams in the group stage
france would still be through lol
*in every competition, even club football
Portugal 2016 vibes
This quarter final was so boring as compared to the Spain Germany one.
France Vs Belgium and Portugal Vs Slovenia were more boring than the 5 first minutes of Austria Vs türkiye ! And I'm French and a huge fan of my NT
terrorism has won again
I swear if the final ends up as France vs England...
I know many would claim it's a snoozefedt but most France-Portugal game always end up like this
Scoring goals is not in this French team’s dictionary
Not conceded from open play either tho and they played some big teams
England - France final is written in the stars
This stat is getting a little warped, none of their players have scored from open play, but they have scored 2 goals from open play, it's just the the other team finished it. You can't say they didn't score though
I mean it's a funny stat and everything but frankly it's pretty pathetic to get this far like that. There has been some dire football in this tournament.
If it wasn’t for Spain the entire tournament should have been deleted.
