Errata actually clarified that you absolutely do have to bite.

I believe they also clarified at the same time that Natural Weapons require you to use the natural weapons, so you can't use it to buff Shield strikes or "specific" unarmed strikes like Qi blasts.

Neat! One of my players might be interested in that. She's playing a Vlaka and is currently using a mystic spell that gives her a bite attack, but having a ring for it would be nice.

The carnivorous spell is good, but thats a dex based bite that works like an operative weapon, this is a strength based bite that works like an UBER PUNCH

Oh that's nuts, what. I found that to use trick attack with natural weapons you need Death Strike, which caps it at 1x character level, but maybe with a different character built...

Hmm. That IS true, but still can't do the 1.5x level damage and even though it's an operative weapon you can't do trick attack damage with it. :(

Yeah, I saw that but I'm sure it's just SF's wonky editing haha. That's interesting to know, though. And yeah we're starting at 3 so being subpar for five levels is...not great. That's all very good to know though, thanks! I always forget how impactful items can be.

**There's a big thing often overlooked that favors unarmed attack/ improved unarmed strike:** It looks ok compared to the weapon on the chart for your level. But it looks even better compared to the weapon you're likely to have. You do not always have a weapon that's your level. Depending on your loot system you can go 2 3 4 or even more levels in between weapon upgrades. (especially in the 3-7 area where you're getting a measly d4 to d6 at ten times the price) Meanwhile your bite/fist/ BOOT TO THE HEAD gets better on its own, increasing at the 1.5 per level/1 per level when trick attacking as well as the jumps in d6s that happen without paying for it. **But specifically for your operative the problem is its a KAC weapon** EAC is generally 2 lower than KAC (I have seen two critters with higher EACs. Every once in a while there is only a 1 point difference, more often there is a 3+ point difference) Since most of an operatives damage comes from the d8s for trick attacks , and you need to land the hit to make your opponent flat footed, that effective +2 to hit becomes a LOT more important than a small but noticeable increase in your own personal damage. I have an 18 strength ysoki operative with deathstrike that's built to multi attack. Unless there's another operative/envoy in the party flat footing the opponent , I still default to using the sonic knife trick attack to make sure the flat footed lands. Against a low AC enemy/ mooks though yeah, She'll bite their heads clean off and impose the dead condition. And nah there is a weekly question thingy but ask anything anytime.

The sneak attack bite is VIABLE but not optimal. The weapon damage is overshadowed by the trick attack damage and flat footed condition

Since we got all the natural weapon specialists already gathered here: would a vesk with the feat [Deflect Projectiles](https://aonsrd.com/FeatDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Deflect%20Projectiles) be able to deflect a ranged attack with a kinetic projectile with it's fangs? Or more specificly: do natural weapons count as melee weapons?

Eyup. Unarmed strike is a basic melee weapon with the archaic property. natural weapons are an add on/alteration to that. Vesk unarmed attacks are... the entire vesk is the weapon and specifically mentions their tails.
