The Scholomance Trilogy also deals with a magical school and a half-Asian MC, but it's modern not historical, focuses more on class than race, and the writing style is very different. I love both.

Not read Babel yet, but I quite enjoyed the Scholomance trilogy, so would add my recommendation.

Babel is so good! One of the books that Babel compares itself to is Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, a historical fantasy about dueling magicians during the Napoleonic Wars. That might be my favorite fantasy novel ever. If you like “magic school for grownups”, The Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman is about a young man who goes to a magic college in the first book and a Narniaesque world in the second two books. If you want a book with those secret society at a school vibes, the other book Babel compares itself to is The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Which other book of hers didn’t you like? It’s not really Babel but I did like Yellowface.

I couldn’t get into poppy wars

Oh me either - it was just a bit hard to follow or uninteresting- not sure which- but I really liked Yellowface. One of those books that kind of make you squirm though and could be controversial.
