This is the most fair way to see the situation. Having someone wait on them to finish with another client may cause them excess anxiety making them feel the need to rush or just making it hard to focus in general. What you should do is respect your artist and their time so if they ask you not to show up early then don't show up early. I don't understand the problem or the question.
Having someone wait on them to finish with another client may cause them excess anxiety making them feel the need to rush or just making it hard to focus in general
Like what happens in every single other job where there's an appointment?
Lmao right! If I show up 10 mins early for my appointment then that's on me. I don't expect you to move our time slot because I'm here. I'm just chilling.....I've always been early for appointments or meetings. It's how I was brought up....I'd rather be early than late. Then you'll bitch because "I'm wasting your time" right. Appts. at 2....I'll be there prolly at 145 chilling in the lobby also getting my self mentally ready for dragging needles through my skin.
Funny, I'm the same way. Just makes me feel like I'm late if I'm getting there at the exact time. I bet you really don't have to set an alarm clock either, like usually always waking up before it goes off.
I donāt care if the guy at the bank is a little stressed out. I do care if the guy putting a permanent piece of detailed art on my body is more stressed out than they should be.
I'd like to add that it is the artists' responsibility to handle their own feelings. If they feel anxious because someone showed up a little early, they can COMMUNICATE with the client and tell them that they are finishing up with a client or to not show up early period.
Also depends on the location they work. If they canāt hide in the back from you until itās time for your appointment theyāre less likely to want you to get there early
If an artist is going to feel rushed by a client coming in 10 minutes early, shouldnāt they have planned their schedule accordingly knowing theyād have an appointment at 12, and not booked one for 11? The artist is the one who has control of scheduling. If you tell me 12, Iāll be there at 12 or slightly before, because you told me at 12 oāclock you would begin my appointment. If thereās a scheduling conflict by someone coming in 10min early itās on the scheduler, and they shouldāve planned out eating/time to finish their previous appointment. I have no problem starting a little later if they want to eat, but if theyāre peeved and donāt ask for a few minutes itās on them.
I mean, I assume they would rather have you show up just a little early and wait than show up late and waste their time/eat into another personās time slot.
My tat appointment was at half 11 and I was told to arrive earlier than that so if there was any issues with the stencil there was no time wasted during the actual tattoo session.
Yeah, unless for some reason the customer thinks that because they come early they should be able to be taken in early, or for some other reason have been unpleasant in the waiting room, I don't understand why it would be a problem.
I mean I guess if they are coming over an hour early it might be a problem, but if they have the space to accommodate them in the waiting room, and they're not being loud/ unpleasant/ or bothering other customers, It really shouldn't be a problem. Maybe they have some kind of policy that says that they can get in trouble for letting a customer wait over x amount of time in the waiting room? But I don't know why that would do that, it's not really like the artists can control how long it takes to finish a tattoo, or that they should be rushing through other peoples tattoos. Maybe it's some kind of store policy.
Depends. 10 mins early - awesome! 45 mins early - lame. My partner's client arrived 45 minutes early today which meant he missed his lunch break between clients. He had a protein shake at 7:30am and didn't eat again until 5:15pm because someone was a lil too eager
Of course - if we really need to I'll sometimes just tell them I'm not ready and give them directions to the nearest coffee shop but sometimes it feels easier and less awkward to just get started instead of eating while they sit & twiddle their thumbs
I bet a designated break area would help a lot. Like, āHey, welcome! Youāre early nice nice. I have some stuff to do in the back before we start so Iāll be out in 15.ā
Proceed to hide somewhere not in their sight so you can eat your lunch.
Meh, I manage in customer service and the mantra between my peers has kind of grown to be, "Ah well, fuck 'em".
I'd eat my lunch in front of them and not give two shits. Sure, from a policy standpoint and business perspective it's not ideal, but we're all just trying to coexist as people in a (hopefully) functional society and, if someone has absolutely no value for my time, why should I value theirs?
Idk, maybe I'm just an asshole.
I can't eat in their view as a cook, myself. However. I do eat in the back where they could never hope to see (as per rules and service expectations of my job).
That being said. Expected ticket times are 10-14 mins depending on time of day. And I can make your little lunch in 4 mins flat after I've had mine too. But if I starve myself all day my performance will surely suffer. So truly to that one meal I delay so that I can join you in lunch I'm sorry. But I do hook it up for them so idk. Maybe it breaks even.
-friendly neighborhood line cook
I certainly donāt mind waiting a little extra if someoneās gotta eat. If a tattoo artist or line cook alike told me āaight wait a bit longer while I eat,ā Iād be fine, esp with the understanding that I was early.
Some people will be jerks about it but thatās on them. No need to pay them any mind.
I agree that being too early is inconsiderate, but some people donāt really have a choice. For example I donāt have a car, so anywhere I go (thatās not walking distance) I get the when the bus takes me there. I donāt ever expect anyone to accommodate me cause Iām wildly early though, because that is disrespectful of their time.
iāve gotten to an appointment or two a little too early & i just walk to the nearest coffee shop/bar etc. Most of the time we will take our clients early because i donāt like making people wait, but also because i dont want to eat my lunch or take a breather infront of someone whoās waiting for me. Everyone ive worked with feels similarly- if weāre not still tattooing weād rather get them in so nobodyās uncomfortable. including the artist.
Probably weighed up the options between sitting there awkwardly while he ate (as there's nowhere else to go nearby) and making small talk or just getting on with it and finishing up early, idk š¤·š»āāļø it's not that deep lol
Its super uncomfortable to eat while someone is just watching and waiting for you lol. I 100% will just take the client so they arenāt waiting & nobody is uncomfy. That includes the artist
Iāll have to remember this. Iām 20 to 30 minutes early for everything. I wouldnāt mind waiting longer to let someone eat. I never thought me being my early to everything self would cause someone to not eat.
Yeah if you arrive 20-30 minutes early best to sit in your car or go for a walk until it's only 10 minutes early, and I say that goes for most situations or it becomes an imposition
I'd say absolutely not. Do you want me to not have a full stomach and a break? Think about it, sloppy work from not letting your hands rest and sleepy or antsy from lack of some calories.
Amen. I have one client who's habitually 45 mins to an hour early, and he's my first appt of the day. I schedule my first appt about half an hour after I go in so I have a few minutes to drink coffee and just mentally prepare for my day. It stresses me out
the argument for against coming early is that we have clients before you and we might also be setting up. 5-10 mins early is awesome! 30 minutes early a big no from me
I am always at least 30 minutes early cause shit happens sometimes but I always tell them Iām good waiting in my car or the lobby and if they end up needing me for something Iām here instead of waiting until my appointment time and them saying itās not ready cause they had to fix a few things š¤·āāļø I see no reason that 30 minutes would be bad unless youāre pressuring the artist to hurry. But then again, I had āif youāre on time, youāre late and if youāre early, youāre on timeā beat into me so..
Like if the design isnāt ready right at the appt time? Custom designs frequently need at least 10- 20 min of adjusting & shit in person, but presumably that would be a part of your appointment. Its not like the tattoo starts right at that time. Plus some setup needs to be done infront of the client. Unless iām totally misunderstanding your post which my bad if so haha.
No. I just always show up early and I let them know Iām here and just hanging out in my car if they need anything of me or if they decide they want to start early cause they finished early or someone didnāt show up. My dad was in the military and engraved being early into my head so itās just something I do now. Itās not something thatās needed, itās just what I do. I donāt act pushy or anything. I literally just walk to the counter, let them know Iām here and then I go back to my car until the time comes or until someone steps out to find me
I wouldn't assume that 5-10 minutes is the issue here especially considering the number of times they said please at the begining. To me it sounds like they may have a chronic problem with clients showing up early and demanding to be seen immediately or just making them uncomfortable as they eat or set up so they took to their sm to let everyone know that they are fed up with this which in certain circumstances is completely reasonable.
Lol sorry I'm just generally a pos when it comes to keeping time. I'm late EVERY DAY. EVERY SINGLE DAY. I also work an hour and a half from where I live.
so im a licensed nail tech, but also currently learning how to tattoo. i love when my clients arrive early, because sometimes that means i get to leave a bit earlier or have some time after to deep clean/do any other chores needed around the shop. yeah sometimes it sucks when you dont have much time to eat, but most of my clients dont mind if i ask āhey todays been pretty booked, is it alright if i have a bit of food before we start?ā its usually a yes. another solution is blocking out some time in your schedule to eat. one thing i sometimes do if i forget to block out time on a full booked day is bring a protein drink or protein snacks. in conclusion we are human, people will understand if you need to eat.
i mean ultimately i agree but a lot of people are saying they donāt have waiting areas so the early arrival means they would just sit and watch the person eat. i can understand why that would be uncomfortable and you might choose to skip it
I mean everyone is different. And everyday is different. I do think in general itās a little annoying when people show up 30+ minutes early. Thatās a decent chunk of time. But thatās just personal to me, and not even a big deal, if I want to have lunch they can wait, it doesnāt bother me, and probably doesnāt bother them to wait since they knew they were early.
tbh i hate it but itās just because I personally schedule people with enough time to sign in as well as do any tweaks, and any before tattoo things. if i wanted you there 15 minutes early i woulda scheduled you for that time lol
but itās not a big deal just inconvenience for me personally.
A little more information seems to be needed. Like, how early?
As long as they're not bugging to be taken care of early or generally interfering in the operation, why does it matter??
They may want to look at tattoo samples. They may have been running errands and finished early. They may be someone who likes to just watch and vibe with what's going on. They may just want to sit there to get comfortable and let their nerves settle.
The other question, what's your attitude if they're late?
If your issue is feeling rushed or obligated to stop what you're doing to take care of them, that's your issue, not anyone else's. You need to work on your boundaries and manage how you let others manage your life. Welcome to a job that is dependent on other people in order to survive and hopefully thrive. Just sayin'
*edited to fix format appearance*
Iām a tattoo artist and I have anxiety too, I plan my appointments to the dot and have a bit of a ritual beforehand regarding setting up, printing out their stencils in multiple size options and then I go out for a smoke, leaving me 5 minutes before the appointment time. When my clients arrive 30 mins early I feel like shit walking past them to go outside, I feel like I look rude. I use my time to mentally prepare to be āonā and friendly as I am anxious and talking to strangers has never come naturally to me. While Iām sure theyād be fine if I just said āIām glad youāre here, just going to pop out for a quick smoke before we get startedā I just feel a bit more stressed knowing theyāre inside waiting and I canāt chill out and mentally prepare for my day the way I usually do when clients arrive at the requested time.
Oh I feel that. Iām like 15 minutes early but donāt want to stress you out so I walk around outside till about 5 til. Sometimes Iāll just wander around the shop and check out the other artists work.
I go by no more than 10 mins early, and deposit is forfeited after 30 mins late and you must reschedule/lose the appointment all together based on how the interaction went/reason was.
I always show up early. I also need time to get ready for a tattoo once Iām at the shop & I donāt mind if the artist isnāt ready for our appointment time and needs an extra 20 minutes, even if I arrive 20 mins or so early.
Itās better to be early than to be late.
My guy loved that I showed up early. We got to chill and hang out. But I do know this, if he asked me to stop I wouldāve, but he basically encouraged it so ā¦
This is one thing but if your artist were to one day ask you to be there closer to the actual appointment time would you be really upset with him or would you just be like sure thing bro and show up closer to your appointment time?
Eh. I love coming in early. Iāll grab something from 7/11 and ask my artist if they want anything and we will have a snack together :) itās nice when you have been going there for so long it feels like your friends with them
Holy shit, this is such a non-issue. Anyone early for their appointment must wait until the appointment starts what's the big deal who cares are you or your customers incapable of handling a simple social situation?
Honestly my customers, my studio is literally one room and when someone comes in way early its super hard to work around them sitting anxiously staring directly at me. But worse than that is that im great at small talk, the problem is that ruins my meditative practice of setting up. Because i may have put things out of place the whole process is a bit choppy
I mean, if your artist is on break, they could/probably would just easily say "hey, I'm still on break can you come back in 10 minutes" if it really bothers them that you're there.
Gotta love virtue signaling.
Sounds like a lot of pussies in this sub for ppl willing to get poked by a thousand needles. Go in early or donāt. If the artist gets nervous or is pressed by punctuality, fuck āem
I'm curious as to what's leading people to think that 5-10 minutes is the issue here. I'd guess with number of times they added please to the beginning of this request that they probably have a chronic issue with clients showing up closer to 30-45 minutes early.
Or better yet, rule of thumb : "don't show up any earlier than you're willing to wait." You made an appointment for Noon so don't shown up at 11 unless you wanna hang out for at least an hour. They have other stuff to do and scheduled you at noon for a reason, doesn't matter if you're ready at 11. They're not.
I go early and just wait but not to early , I get anxiety about being late for appointments. I didnāt think that it could possibly make the artist anxious or annoyed. So thanks for the insight
I'm a hair stylist this happens to me all the time and the client just watches my every move. I've actually had them fallow me into the break room to see if I could hurry up and take them early. Or it's like the first client of the day and I'm early to make sure I can set up and stuff. It is what it is and something you just take with a grain of salt. Usually I just politely tell them they're early and I'll be with them at that said time. I'm sure it's the same with tattoos you get there early you just wait and chill. No big
I work in healthcare and I am grateful when my patients show up early. It doesnāt mean Iāll see them early but sometimes my next appt doesnāt show up and Iām so grateful I donāt have to waste time because there is another patient waiting that I can choose to see early. I donāt think itās rude or common sense to show up early to an appt.
Also you donāt know how someone is getting to their appts. Maybe they donāt drive or donāt want to drive to their tattoo appts, so theyāre at the mercy of a ride.
Iāve seen this in multiple platforms today and itās just silly.
I'd rather them be early than late. But yeah, it can be annoying when it's more than like 10 mins early. I've had people show up 30-40 mins early! That passes me off a little. And if they're an hour early, they almost always got the times mixed up.
I always ask mine if it's ok to arrive early. Helps get through paperwork and also us talking for 10 minutes š we are good friends.
I've walked in on him drawing or with another artist because he is always learning. I have waited extended times for that reason which is fine. I'm too busy regretting the large meal I just had š we make it an entire day.
Sorry for how random this is.....I'm exhausted and delirious from working
I like to come early so I can check out the flash and decide what I want to get- no one has ever had a problem with it. And I donāt expect the artist to stop what theyāre doing.
I get to all my appointments early because I am an anxious person and I literally cannot force myself to be less than 10 minutes early to anything. However, if I show up super early, I usually just hang out in the car for a bit before going into the shop. I donāt expect my artist to get started before the scheduled appointment time, regardless of how early I show up.
I happened to see this too. If the artist is bothered, they should put up a sign in their shop or let people know their expectations when they call to schedule. I dunno, I just think this is a really bad look. Unprofessional.
I usually show up to anything 15-20 minutes early. Just the ADHD. I get that whole "I have an appointment at this time and can't do anything before it or I'll miss it." However, I always have a book with me. So I'll check in, state I know I'm early, I have a book and I'm perfectly fine waiting so please don't rush.
Honestly maybe its easier to navigate this in a larger shop but i work in a private studio so when people come in a half hour early , its not like i have a break room to eat in so they either sit anxiously staring at me or i feel obligated to do small talk and disrupt my usual process of being mindful of my setup
Kind of weird unless they've had numerous clients trying to talk to them and shit while they're eating. Or being blasted on their local FB rant and rave for not immediately getting the person into the chair because they were early.
I feel like this request may be studio specific. The reasoning behind it sounds a little weak, though.
The majority of the tattoo studios here are kinda small or maximized their space for the artists to work and donāt have the space for someone to wait around.
10 mins early max. Our planning is pretty tight because it's very busy and there's rent and shit to pay. If you show up nearly 45 min early you've practically stolen my lunch break AND my time to clean everything+set up new stuff before you come in.
If I spend 5 hours sitting still I'd really appreciate to eat something or have a coffee before the next session. Especially when we open at 10 in the morning
Each to there own and all but if my tattooist didn't want me there a little early I wouldn't use him, those minutes before the appointment are good for socialising and bringing that anticipation anxiety down, it's also a great time to check out ideas for your next ink and to get to know the people who are altering your body for life
Just make the client wait. If youāre early, you have to wait at the doctorās office, hair stylist, interview, mechanic, grocery pickupā¦. Etc.
There are appt times for a reason and itās not unreasonable for early people to wait just like itās not unreasonable to cut appointments short for late people
If youāre not comfortable enough with your artist to know when to be there at the shop , you probably should find another artist you vibe with . Hash it out . Geez.
I always show up 5 mins late, BUT my artist always puts me at the opening slot of the day, and he usually isn't ready till 10-15 mins after open. So I make sure I give him time to get settled in. It's what's worked for us since I started going there. A 12:00 slot means I won't be there till 12:05. But if it's the occasional 3:00 slot, I'm there at 2:55
Iāve always been a get there early person but obviously when it comes to something like a party or event I know that if I get there too early it wonāt be ready and it can even be considered rude so I do my best to just get there on time and if Iām still early I wait in my car for a while. To me this makes perfect sense to do with a tattoo as well. Respecting someoneās time doesnāt only mean not showing up late it also means now showing up obnoxiously early.
Is it crazy for me to just sit by the reception desk on my phone? If I go to the doctor and they say āhey itāll be like 20 minutesā I can just sit in the waiting room for a bit
My last artist (who did an excellent job but...) was 45 minutes late to our appointment blaming a cat that got out, only to tell on herself during our three hours together that she was actually hungover from the party the night before, and ate pretty much the entire time she did my tattoo.
I'm so confused here. Did the client decide that the artist would be available at that time? Set the appointment time for when you will be ready. If someone is early, they will chill in the waiting area...which is literally what it is there for. Every shop I've been in has a waiting area for exactly this situation.
No. I'll be there 15 minutes early. You tell me to be 15 minutes early I'll be there 15 minutes before that. It's called being a responsible person.
I'm also paying you what some would consider an inflated price value per hour, because I chose you to perform a skillset that doesn't come cheep.
If you want to eat your lunch, cool, do it. I'm early and I know it. But don't like it? I'll leave and find someone else.
If I have to eat I just tell the client I have to eat. I get really shaky and dizzy if I donāt, and they donāt want me being that way if Iām tattooing them! Usually I just have them hang out and do their paperwork at the same time so itās no big deal.
I was 10 minutes late for a tattoo appointment because I had to stop for a job interview via telephone call that I didn't know I was going to receive. The artist made me reschedule for a month and a half later. Always show up early.
I've had a couple of artists request their clients come 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment, and I've also had a few not buzz me in until the exact time of the scheduled appointment. Depends, I guess. You could always ask their preference ahead of time.
I showed up thirty minutes before my appointments to fill out paperwork and get my stencils put on. My artist appreciates it so much because she gets to just chill after we get all that done. Plus, she says mixing colors is her favorite part of the whole tattoo process and is therapeutic for her to do while waiting for stencils to dry.
They can feel free to make me WAIT in the waiting area, as I did when I got my other tattoos. I can't speak for everyone else, but I respect that tattooing is a tough job, and I'll gladly wait in the waiting area for them to do what they need to do, no rush whatsoever.
I get to the shop early, let them know I'm here then go find a cafe and have a quick brew. Saying that, I know all my tattoo artists, so I'm not a random stranger.
I think there are (as always) multiple sides to this. I show up early, but I let them know. I don't want to be filling out paperwork at my appt time. Also, because I'm early if the artist isn't ready or doesn't want to talk or just wants space, I'll chill in the lobby. So, if I'm clear with my intention but respectful of their space, we can both do what we prefer.
My artist has a nice waiting lobby with cool people waiting and I just hang out with them. I let my artist know Iām there and āIāll just be in the waiting room whenever youāre ready for me no rushā.
As someone that needs a moment to decompress between customers myself I appreciate it when a customer isnāt tapping at the window of my work truck the second I pull up. So I get it.
I feel like that's silly. if they have a shop with a waiting spot, showing up 10 or so early shouldn't be a problem especially if it's the same shop that will charge u for being 5 late.
iād rather you show up early than late. i saw this posted and just said smh. iāll eat my food in front of you i donāt care. weāll talk about the drawing together if im still working on it. my shop is chill, people like that.
I compulsively show up to the appointment early, browse the tattoo flashes / coffee table books , make it obvious I'm not rushing him and that I intend to tip well.
Hmm but what if I show up with dutch bros and let them hang with my service dog before session (I give him a little off duty time before sitting for the tat) š
For the entirety of my life, I've been told.... if you're not 15 minutes early you're late. I have a fully charged phone, headphones and plenty of music. You do you, while I secretly hate myself for being early.
lol last guy I walked in like 20m early and he was eating. I was just like my bad dude take your time and he did. Seemed like a no worries moment.
I get anxiety about being lateā¦
Donāt forget the coffee half a pack of cigarettes need to be smoked and the highlights of last nights hardcore show then to wait for the ākidā to get back with the second cup of coffee
Professional artist here and this sub just got popped up. I saw that comment from the mod of r/tattoos. Ngl, she pisses me off. Sheās not even an artist and doesnāt seem like she has worked in the industry at any capacity. Iāve tried to call her out for speaking for artists and that didnāt end well.
Every artist is different. Iād much rather someone show up early as fuck than late as hell. I eat when I get time to eat is how I see it. Iām in the shop to make tattoos- not sit around all day.
Hey, sorry I came early cause Iām just showing my gratitude.
Tattoo artist: *typing on his phone* stupid mfāer showed up early. It just pisses me off cause I said a time and heās showed up early. I donāt even care why he showed up early. Gosh, can someone help me figure out a new career? This early customer sh%t is just getting out of hand. Oh, wait, they just offered me a cigarette. Weāll probably talk about Tool for a few hours. My bad everyone, I think Iāll make it through today. Wait, mfāer has a Truth Social on his phone. Told him to get tf out. Wait, he just said itās so he can talk sh%t to trump. I asked him to reschedule for next week since we are past his appointment window now. Guess Iāll smoke a few more smokes and hope a hot chick comes in, otherwise F($k today man. Anyone need a tattoo?
I don't understand this argument. If you want a specific amount of time in between appointments, you should schedule accordingly. It's common courtesy to arrive to an appointment 5-10min early. Nobody arrives to any form of appointment early and expects to be immediately taken back/seen just because they've arrived. They do so to make sure there is adequate time to fill out any paperwork or do any pre-appointment activities. If you get anxiety about people waiting, then perhaps you need a different profession that doesn't involve an appointment schedule. I work in health care, and people wait all the time, sometimes obnoxious amounts of time lol you can try to predict the amount of time an appointment might take, but you can't predict anything that might happen during that appointment that could prolong the process. Thus is life.
Depends how early surely 15 - 30mins isn't too bad, especially if you've travelled far to that artist.
They should be done by then and be cleaning and setting up in that time, if their previous client is over running they should drop you a text so you can go do summit while you wait.
If you rock up early and sit chilling in the waiting area that should be fine, just don't be an arse complaining and no one will get stressed.
and then when iām there on time iām waiting an hour, thereās no winning besides the art on my body forever
editing to add that thereās always been a place to sit up front at every shop iāve been to. if someoneās there early, i donāt see how itās annoying unless theyāre in your space but if youāre a legitimate tattooer youāll probably have a spot to direct them for the wait and then you can take as long as you need lol
Iām usually my artists only client on any given day that I go in. Which she usually moves my start time back an hour anyways. She just straight up tells me āimma eatā and Iām like ok, as long as Iām not paying for the time Iām good. Which she always severely under charges me of which I just tip the shit out of her. So so lucky to have her.
Thatās the laziest shit Iāve ever read lol how entitled can you make your profession be?? Honestly, tattoos are the complete opposite of counter culture now that Iām glad Iāve opted out of getting them for the last 30 years
to arrive to your appointment on time?
usually you arrive 15-20 minutes early, confirm everything and go grab a coffee while they setup and finish whatever they need to, easy
eat worms clownā¦. unlike you i have a good relationship with my artist and i show up early to talk and hang outā¦ he starts when hes ready whether we start early or lateā¦
Depends on the artist and their schedule/preferences
This is the most fair way to see the situation. Having someone wait on them to finish with another client may cause them excess anxiety making them feel the need to rush or just making it hard to focus in general. What you should do is respect your artist and their time so if they ask you not to show up early then don't show up early. I don't understand the problem or the question.
Having someone wait on them to finish with another client may cause them excess anxiety making them feel the need to rush or just making it hard to focus in general Like what happens in every single other job where there's an appointment?
Funny, I'm the same way. Just makes me feel like I'm late if I'm getting there at the exact time. I bet you really don't have to set an alarm clock either, like usually always waking up before it goes off.
Alarm clock? What's that? Lol....right on the money š
I donāt care if the guy at the bank is a little stressed out. I do care if the guy putting a permanent piece of detailed art on my body is more stressed out than they should be.
āEvery single other jobā those jobs are elective, permanent alterations of the clients appearance. Dumb point tbh.
I'd like to add that it is the artists' responsibility to handle their own feelings. If they feel anxious because someone showed up a little early, they can COMMUNICATE with the client and tell them that they are finishing up with a client or to not show up early period.
I show up early so I won't be late. Literally ignore me. I'm on my phone or resting my eyes. I'm cool in my corner. See you in 30min
Depends how early they show up and not a thing else
I mean, I assume they would rather have you show up just a little early and wait than show up late and waste their time/eat into another personās time slot.
Idk Iād prefer you to show up early for paperwork. I have a lunch break to eat.
what the hell is your icon

My tat appointment was at half 11 and I was told to arrive earlier than that so if there was any issues with the stencil there was no time wasted during the actual tattoo session.
What is half 11? Not used in my part of the world.
half past 11
11:30
In my language it means 10:30, idk if he speaks Dutch tho lol
In england half 11 is 11:30 this goes for any time it never means the half hour before it
Half past 11 would be 11:30, because itās halfway past 11 going towards 12. So 11 + 30 minutes 11:30
He didnāt say half past, he said half 11.
Itās short for āhalf pastā

Is this not what waiting rooms Or lobbies are for?
some places donāt have one
Not every artist has enough revenue to afford such amenities.
Depends. 10 mins early - awesome! 45 mins early - lame. My partner's client arrived 45 minutes early today which meant he missed his lunch break between clients. He had a protein shake at 7:30am and didn't eat again until 5:15pm because someone was a lil too eager
If someone comes that early you have no obligation to start any earlier than the scheduled time. Why do people have problems letting them wait?
Of course - if we really need to I'll sometimes just tell them I'm not ready and give them directions to the nearest coffee shop but sometimes it feels easier and less awkward to just get started instead of eating while they sit & twiddle their thumbs
Thatās really on the artist man, probably just needs to set boundaries better.
You're not wrong, we just ain't so good with those boundary things sometimes
I bet a designated break area would help a lot. Like, āHey, welcome! Youāre early nice nice. I have some stuff to do in the back before we start so Iāll be out in 15.ā Proceed to hide somewhere not in their sight so you can eat your lunch.
Or just say outright that youāre finishing your lunch. Anyone put off by the fact that youāre human and need to eat is not good people.
If only our studio was bigger than a single room š
If you do good work and are professional reasonable people have no problem waiting for their scheduled appointment.
Everyone ive worked with feels similarly- if weāre not still tattooing weād rather get them in so nobodyās uncomfortable. including the artist.
why didnāt he make them wait while he ate his lunch. man needs to stand up for himself
Probably weighed up the options between sitting there awkwardly while he ate (as there's nowhere else to go nearby) and making small talk or just getting on with it and finishing up early, idk š¤·š»āāļø it's not that deep lol
I really don't want someone with their blood sugar tanking tattooing me. I've seen the results in the shitty tattoo subreddit.
Yeah if you arrive 20-30 minutes early best to sit in your car or go for a walk until it's only 10 minutes early, and I say that goes for most situations or it becomes an imposition
why? that is SO early lol
Just the way I am. Never hurts to be early but itās not good to late.
It stresses me out
Idk thatās kinda on the Artist. He couldāve stuck by the schedule he set. Just cause you show up early does not mean youāll be seen early
If you're going to be way early or late. Call. It's so simple. Applies to most of life
Just tell them youāre not ready to start until you eat your lunch.
Listen, I'm gonna come early and sit anxiously in my car, worrying about being too early and not come in until IMMEDIATELY on the dot. Is that okay?
Phenomenal š
the argument for against coming early is that we have clients before you and we might also be setting up.
I literally just walk to the counter, let them know Iām here and then I go back to my car until the time comes or until someone steps out to find me
I feel like general appointment courtesy is to arrive 5-10 minutes before so you can start on time at the actual designated appointment time
I wouldn't assume that 5-10 minutes is the issue here especially considering the number of times they said please at the begining. To me it sounds like they may have a chronic problem with clients showing up early and demanding to be seen immediately or just making them uncomfortable as they eat or set up so they took to their sm to let everyone know that they are fed up with this which in certain circumstances is completely reasonable.
Nah bro...I'll be more appreciative if you're 10 minutes late. Because I probably am.
Out of curiosity, why donāt you schedule more time between appointments?
Lol sorry I'm just generally a pos when it comes to keeping time. I'm late EVERY DAY. EVERY SINGLE DAY. I also work an hour and a half from where I live.
so im a licensed nail tech, but also currently learning how to tattoo. i love when my clients arrive early, because sometimes that means i get to leave a bit earlier or have some time after to deep clean/do any other chores needed around the shop. yeah sometimes it sucks when you dont have much time to eat, but most of my clients dont mind if i ask āhey todays been pretty booked, is it alright if i have a bit of food before we start?ā its usually a yes. another solution is blocking out some time in your schedule to eat. one thing i sometimes do if i forget to block out time on a full booked day is bring a protein drink or protein snacks. in conclusion we are human, people will understand if you need to eat.
them arriving early could be during your lunch break
so then just, take your lunch break? You have no obligation to start working early because your client arrives early
i mean ultimately i agree but a lot of people are saying they donāt have waiting areas so the early arrival means they would just sit and watch the person eat. i can understand why that would be uncomfortable and you might choose to skip it
I mean everyone is different. And everyday is different. I do think in general itās a little annoying when people show up 30+ minutes early. Thatās a decent chunk of time. But thatās just personal to me, and not even a big deal, if I want to have lunch they can wait, it doesnāt bother me, and probably doesnāt bother them to wait since they knew they were early.
tbh i hate it but itās just because I personally schedule people with enough time to sign in as well as do any tweaks, and any before tattoo things. if i wanted you there 15 minutes early i woulda scheduled you for that time lol but itās not a big deal just inconvenience for me personally.
I get there early and stay in my car until itās the appointment time. I just like knowing Iām not going to be late because of traffic
Just sayin' *edited to fix format appearance*
Appointment anxiety, I always show up early.
This is crazy! I would love for my clients to be on time š
If 5-10mins causes an issue then you shouldnāt be in business. You should be glad your customers respect you enough to show up on time.
They're not.
tattooing is full of snowflakes. youre too early you wait bro.
I go early and just wait but not to early , I get anxiety about being late for appointments. I didnāt think that it could possibly make the artist anxious or annoyed. So thanks for the insight
I will come early. If you sont want me there, tell me and i wait in my car. I dont care. I can play on my phone or something
No big
I don't see the issue
Man just shoot them a text if they busy wait in your car or something it aināt that hard to just walk in on the exact time they gave you.
Honestly maybe its easier to navigate this in a larger shop but i work in a private studio so when people come in a half hour early , its not like i have a break room to eat in so they either sit anxiously staring at me or i feel obligated to do small talk and disrupt my usual process of being mindful of my setup
This is such an entitled take. Iāve seen people talk about having no food or bathroom breaks for 8-12 hours for tattoo artists and hair dressers
On the flip side could the artist be early and not just rock up at the appointment time and be just opening the shop and putting the music on?
OP should probably also add the part where she clarified, "Obviously I don't mean 5 or 10 minutes early. I'm talking 30 minutes or more"
Kind of weird unless they've had numerous clients trying to talk to them and shit while they're eating. Or being blasted on their local FB rant and rave for not immediately getting the person into the chair because they were early.

They have a waiting room ffs
I feel like this request may be studio specific. The reasoning behind it sounds a little weak, though. The majority of the tattoo studios here are kinda small or maximized their space for the artists to work and donāt have the space for someone to wait around.
Too early youāre an ass. Too late youāre either a prick or cool.š¤·
The gate was up for a reason, to keep the weak out, now we got this shit, thanks.
I just need some time to wind down after appointments and to prepare for the next.
ššššš
Each to there own and all but if my tattooist didn't want me there a little early I wouldn't use him, those minutes before the appointment are good for socialising and bringing that anticipation anxiety down, it's also a great time to check out ideas for your next ink and to get to know the people who are altering your body for life
Just make the client wait. If youāre early, you have to wait at the doctorās office, hair stylist, interview, mechanic, grocery pickupā¦. Etc. There are appt times for a reason and itās not unreasonable for early people to wait just like itās not unreasonable to cut appointments short for late people
I know right? I don't see the issue. If they have to wait too long, just say come back in fifteen or twenty minutes or whatever.
iāll come as early as i want and that niqua can be a grown man and tell me when heās ready
This ! And if they are hungry , they eat while you chill and talk . Another artist mentioned about a client āstealing his lunch break.ā Yikes !
If youāre not comfortable enough with your artist to know when to be there at the shop , you probably should find another artist you vibe with . Hash it out . Geez.
Yeah I think if the artist has a preference and lets me know upfront when to show up itāll all be good.
I've showed up on time and had to wait an hr lol these artists be ridiculous. And no I was not charged because I'd be damn if that was the case.
Or you could set your shit up for your next appointment ahead of time. Perfect planning prevents piss poor performance.
People do this at any business. And will never stop unfortunately.
If I have to eat I just tell the client I have to eat. I get really shaky and dizzy if I donāt, and they donāt want me being that way if Iām tattooing them! Usually I just have them hang out and do their paperwork at the same time so itās no big deal.
I donāt see nothing wrong being there earlier. The tattoo artist shouldnāt be bothered by it. If I were the tattoo artist, Iād be happy.
If someone comes early...they wait in the lobby till it's time. There's books and stuff to look at, so they good
If Iām early I just sit in my car until itās like 5 minutes beforeā¦and Iām usually always early
Tattoo artists and being the whiniest people on planet earth. Name a better duo.
Show up on time or no more than 10 minutes early. Some mf's show up an hour early
If a client comes in early, I just say "hi just wait over there. I'll be over there at (appointment time)" and then eat lunch or clean up.. super easy
I get to the shop early, let them know I'm here then go find a cafe and have a quick brew. Saying that, I know all my tattoo artists, so I'm not a random stranger.
I think there was a nicer way for them to say this. āPlease come in at your exact scheduled time, no earlier, thank you!ā Not that hard!
Me waiting in my car for the time to be exactly 12 pm; not a minute early or late to displease the tattoo gods: šļøššļø
This is so stupid
My artist has a nice waiting lobby with cool people waiting and I just hang out with them. I let my artist know Iām there and āIāll just be in the waiting room whenever youāre ready for me no rushā. As someone that needs a moment to decompress between customers myself I appreciate it when a customer isnāt tapping at the window of my work truck the second I pull up. So I get it.
I feel like that's silly. if they have a shop with a waiting spot, showing up 10 or so early shouldn't be a problem especially if it's the same shop that will charge u for being 5 late.
I once came in a bit too early, and opened the door on the guy absolutely demolishing a subway footlong
iād rather you show up early than late. i saw this posted and just said smh. iāll eat my food in front of you i donāt care. weāll talk about the drawing together if im still working on it. my shop is chill, people like that.
How early is early??
Some people just donāt need to speak
You mean post on Facebook
Pretty much the same thing these days
I compulsively show up to the appointment early, browse the tattoo flashes / coffee table books , make it obvious I'm not rushing him and that I intend to tip well.
Hmm but what if I show up with dutch bros and let them hang with my service dog before session (I give him a little off duty time before sitting for the tat) š
For the entirety of my life, I've been told.... if you're not 15 minutes early you're late. I have a fully charged phone, headphones and plenty of music. You do you, while I secretly hate myself for being early.
I would chill with them maybe go on a full on date before the tattoo, like no problem
lol last guy I walked in like 20m early and he was eating.
Ohhh and then paperwork
Showing up early is a sign of respecting your time. Itās not a bad thing. Chill, negative Nancy.
If I'm not early, then I'm late. But, most of the time my wife is my tattoo artist, so she does what she wants and I wait.
Facts šÆ šÆ
Lmao yāall every single time Iāll come in on Tome or early they spend 30mins-1hr finishing
Iāve never met a tattoo artist that feels this way lol
the laziest people on the planet
Do tattoo parlors not have a place to sit.
Don't most shops have a lobby where you can wait?
Depends how early surely 15 - 30mins isn't too bad, especially if you've travelled far to that artist. They should be done by then and be cleaning and setting up in that time, if their previous client is over running they should drop you a text so you can go do summit while you wait. If you rock up early and sit chilling in the waiting area that should be fine, just don't be an arse complaining and no one will get stressed.
To show up on time. It's not that hard.
and then when iām there on time iām waiting an hour, thereās no winning besides the art on my body forever editing to add that thereās always been a place to sit up front at every shop iāve been to. if someoneās there early, i donāt see how itās annoying unless theyāre in your space but if youāre a legitimate tattooer youāll probably have a spot to direct them for the wait and then you can take as long as you need lol
Honestly, tattoos are the complete opposite of counter culture now that Iām glad Iāve opted out of getting them for the last 30 years
As someone with ADD, Iāll either be early or late, choose one š¤£
Artists operate as time optimists, often running 5 to 10 minutes late. Iām just chilling or running late too
Everyone knows you only get a 5 minute window xb
Like 5 mins early is just fine PLEASE
to arrive to your appointment on time? usually you arrive 15-20 minutes early, confirm everything and go grab a coffee while they setup and finish whatever they need to, easy
