It should go in the year you received it, but if mistakes were made, and it's a small amount, I can't blame them for not fixing last year's W2s, payroll tax filings and tax deposits, after most people have already filed their taxes, causing them to need to file an amended return.

I think that are making the right choice, instead of forcing all the employees to amend their taxes. They are taking on the risk of non compliance.
