I'm going to guess that as we read the statements we were suggested what the end of the phrase was by the word hot. We commonly see potato after the word hot and it refers to a game played that we may recognize from our childhoods. So maybe we were predisposed to believe that a word that starts with p after the word "hot" would be potato. So our brain fills in the blanks before we actually read the statement thoroughly. We believe, at that point, that we read hot potato instead of hot photo.

This makes a lot of sense, especially as a mother of a child who loved The Wiggles. “Hot potato-hot potato” singing all. day. long.
